[1] In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and built Ramah, that he might not allow anyone to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. [2] Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of Yahweh’s house and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben Hadad king of Syria, who lived at Damascus, saying, [3] “Let there be a treaty between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. Behold, I have sent you silver and gold. Go, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.” [4] Ben Hadad listened to King Asa, and sent the captains of his armies against the cities of Israel; and they struck Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim, and all the storage cities of Naphtali. [5] When Baasha heard of it, he stopped building Ramah, and let his work cease. [6] Then Asa the king took all Judah, and they carried away the stones and timber of Ramah, with which Baasha had built; and he built Geba and Mizpah with them. [7] At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said to him, “Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on Yahweh your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped out of your hand. [8] Weren’t the Ethiopians and the Lubim a huge army, with chariots and exceedingly many horsemen? Yet, because you relied on Yahweh, he delivered them into your hand. [9] For Yahweh’s eyes run back and forth throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. You have done foolishly in this; for from now on you will have wars.” [10] Then Asa was angry with the seer, and put him in the prison; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. Asa oppressed some of the people at the same time. [11] Behold, the acts of Asa, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. [12] In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa was diseased in his feet. His disease was exceedingly great; yet in his disease he didn’t seek Yahweh, but just the physicians. [13] Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the forty-first year of his reign. [14] They buried him in his own tomb, which he had dug out for himself in David’s city, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odors and various kinds of spices prepared by the perfumers’ art; and they made a very great fire for him.

[1] In the sixH8337 and thirtiethH7970 yearH8141 of the reignH4438 of AsaH609 BaashaH1201 kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 came upH5927(QalPerf) against Judah,H3063 and builtH1129(QalImpf) Ramah,H7414 to the intent thatH1115 he might letH5414(QalInf) none go outH3318(QalActPtc) or come inH935(QalActPtc) to AsaH609 kingH4428 of Judah.H3063 [2] Then AsaH609 brought outH3318(HiphImpf) silverH3701 and goldH2091 out of the treasuresH214 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 and of the king’sH4428 house,H1004 and sentH7971(QalImpf) to BenhadadH1130 kingH4428 of Syria,H758 that dweltH3427(QalActPtc) at Damascus,H1834 saying,H559(QalInf) [3] [There is] a leagueH1285 between me and thee, as [there was] between my fatherH1 and thy father:H1 behold, I have sentH7971(QalPerf) thee silverH3701 and gold;H2091 go,H3212(QalImpv) breakH6565(HiphImpv) thy leagueH1285 with BaashaH1201 kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 that he may departH5927(QalImpf) from me. [4] And BenhadadH1130 hearkenedH8085(QalImpf) unto kingH4428 Asa,H609 and sentH7971(QalImpf) the captainsH8269 of his armiesH2428 against the citiesH5892 of Israel;H3478 and they smoteH5221(HiphImpf) Ijon,H5859 and Dan,H1835 and Abelmaim,H66 and all the storeH4543 citiesH5892 of Naphtali.H5321 [5] And it came to pass, when BaashaH1201 heardH8085(QalInf) [it], that he left offH2308(QalImpf) buildingH1129(QalInf) of Ramah,H7414 and let his workH4399 cease.H7673(HiphImpf) [6] Then AsaH609 the kingH4428 tookH3947(QalPerf) all Judah;H3063 and they carried awayH5375(QalImpf) the stonesH68 of Ramah,H7414 and the timberH6086 thereof, wherewith BaashaH1201 was building;H1129(QalPerf) and he builtH1129(QalImpf) therewith GebaH1387 and Mizpah.H4709 [7] And at that timeH6256 HananiH2607 the seerH7200(QalActPtc) cameH935(QalPerf) to AsaH609 kingH4428 of Judah,H3063 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Because thou hast reliedH8172(NiphInf) on the kingH4428 of Syria,H758 and not reliedH8172(NiphPerf) on the LordH3068 thy God,H430 therefore is the hostH2428 of the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 escapedH4422(NiphPerf) out of thine hand.H3027 [8] Were not the EthiopiansH3569 and the LubimsH3864 a hugeH7230 host,H2428 with veryH3966 manyH7235(HiphInf) chariotsH7393 and horsemen?H6571 yet, because thou didst relyH8172(NiphInf) on the Lord,H3068 he deliveredH5414(QalPerf) them into thine hand.H3027 [9] For the eyesH5869 of the LordH3068 run to and froH7751(PolePtc) throughout the whole earth,H776 to shew himself strongH2388(HithInf) in the behalf of [them] whose heartH3824 [is] perfectH8003 toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly:H5528(NiphPerf) therefore from henceforthH6258 thou shalt haveH3426 wars.H4421 [10] Then AsaH609 was wrothH3707(QalImpf) with the seer,H7200(QalActPtc) and putH5414(QalImpf) him in a prisonH4115 house;H1004 for [he was] in a rageH2197 with him because of this [thing]. And AsaH609 oppressedH7533(PielImpf) [some] of the peopleH5971 the same time.H6256 [11] And, behold, the actsH1697 of Asa,H609 firstH7223 and last,H314 lo, they [are] writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH5612 of the kingsH4428 of JudahH3063 and Israel.H3478 [12] And AsaH609 in the thirtyH7970 and ninthH8672 yearH8141 of his reignH4438 was diseasedH2456(QalImpf) in his feet,H7272 until his diseaseH2483 [was] exceedingH4605 [great]: yet in his diseaseH2483 he soughtH1875(QalPerf) not to the Lord,H3068 but to the physicians.H7495(QalActPtc) [13] And AsaH609 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers,H1 and diedH4191(QalImpf) in the oneH259 and fortiethH705 yearH8141 of his reign.H4427(QalInf) [14] And they buriedH6912(QalImpf) him in his own sepulchres,H6913 which he had madeH3738(QalPerf) for himself in the cityH5892 of David,H1732 and laidH7901(HiphImpf) him in the bedH4904 which was filledH4390(PielPerf) with sweet odoursH1314 and divers kindsH2177 [of spices] preparedH7543(PualPtc) by the apothecaries’H4842 art:H4639 and they madeH8313(QalImpf) a veryH3966 greatH1419 burningH8316 for him.
