[1] When the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned Yahweh’s law, and all Israel with him. [2] In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had trespassed against Yahweh, [3] with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen. The people were without number who came with him out of Egypt: the Lubim, the Sukkiim, and the Ethiopians. [4] He took the fortified cities which belonged to Judah, and came to Jerusalem. [5] Now Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Yahweh says, ‘You have forsaken me, therefore I have also left you in the hand of Shishak.’ ” [6] Then the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, “Yahweh is righteous.” [7] When Yahweh saw that they humbled themselves, Yahweh’s word came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath won’t be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. [8] Nevertheless they will be his servants, that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.” [9] So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem and took away the treasures of Yahweh’s house and the treasures of the king’s house. He took it all away. He also took away the shields of gold which Solomon had made. [10] King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king’s house. [11] As often as the king entered into Yahweh’s house, the guard came and bore them, then brought them back into the guard room. [12] When he humbled himself, Yahweh’s wrath turned from him, so as not to destroy him altogether. Moreover, there were good things found in Judah. [13] So King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem and reigned; for Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. [14] He did that which was evil, because he didn’t set his heart to seek Yahweh. [15] Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, aren’t they written in the histories of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer, in the genealogies? There were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. [16] Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in David’s city; and Abijah his son reigned in his place.

[1] And it came to pass, when RehoboamH7346 had establishedH3559(HiphInf) the kingdom,H4438 and had strengthenedH2393 himself, he forsookH5800(QalPerf) the lawH8451 of the Lord,H3068 and all IsraelH3478 with him. [2] And it came to pass, [that] in the fifthH2549 yearH8141 of kingH4428 RehoboamH7346 ShishakH7895 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 came upH5927(QalPerf) against Jerusalem,H3389 because they had transgressedH4603(QalPerf) against the Lord,H3068 [3] With twelve hundredH3967 chariots,H7393 and threescoreH8346 thousandH505 horsemen:H6571 and the peopleH5971 [were] without numberH4557 that cameH935(QalPerf) with him out of Egypt;H4714 the Lubims,H3864 the Sukkiims,H5525 and the Ethiopians.H3569 [4] And he tookH3920(QalImpf) the fencedH4694 citiesH5892 which [pertained] to Judah,H3063 and cameH935(QalImpf) to Jerusalem.H3389 [5] Then cameH935(QalPerf) ShemaiahH8098 the prophetH5030 to Rehoboam,H7346 and [to] the princesH8269 of Judah,H3063 that were gathered togetherH622(NiphPerf) to JerusalemH3389 becauseH6440 of Shishak,H7895 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 Ye have forsakenH5800(QalPerf) me, and therefore have I alsoH637 leftH5800(QalPerf) you in the handH3027 of Shishak.H7895 [6] Whereupon the princesH8269 of IsraelH3478 and the kingH4428 humbledH3665(NiphImpf) themselves; and they said,H559(QalImpf) The LordH3068 [is] righteous.H6662 [7] And when the LordH3068 sawH7200(QalInf) that they humbledH3665(NiphPerf) themselves, the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 came to Shemaiah,H8098 saying,H559(QalInf) They have humbledH3665(NiphPerf) themselves; [therefore] I will not destroyH7843(HiphImpf) them, but I will grantH5414(QalPerf) them someH4592 deliverance;H6413 and my wrathH2534 shall not be poured outH5413(QalImpf) upon JerusalemH3389 by the handH3027 of Shishak.H7895 [8] Nevertheless they shall be his servants;H5650 that they may knowH3045(QalImpf) my service,H5656 and the serviceH5656 of the kingdomsH4467 of the countries.H776 [9] So ShishakH7895 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 came upH5927(QalImpf) against Jerusalem,H3389 and took awayH3947(QalImpf) the treasuresH214 of the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 and the treasuresH214 of the king’sH4428 house;H1004 he tookH3947(QalPerf) all: he carried awayH3947(QalImpf) also the shieldsH4043 of goldH2091 which SolomonH8010 had made.H6213(QalPerf) [10] Instead of which kingH4428 RehoboamH7346 madeH6213(QalImpf) shieldsH4043 of brass,H5178 and committedH6485(HiphPerf) [them] to the handsH3027 of the chiefH8269 of the guard,H7323(QalPtc) that keptH8104(QalActPtc) the entranceH6607 of the king’sH4428 house.H1004 [11] And whenH1767 the kingH4428 enteredH935(QalInf) into the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 the guardH7323(QalPtc) cameH935(QalPerf) and fetchedH5375(QalPerf) them, and brought them againH7725(HiphPerf) into the guardH7323(QalPtc) chamber.H8372 [12] And when he humbledH3665(NiphInf) himself, the wrathH639 of the LordH3068 turnedH7725(QalPerf) from him, that he would not destroyH7843(HiphInf) [him] altogether:H3617 and also in JudahH3063 thingsH1697 went well.H2896 [13] So kingH4428 RehoboamH7346 strengthenedH2388(HithImpf) himself in Jerusalem,H3389 and reigned:H4427(QalImpf) for RehoboamH7346 [was] oneH259 and fortyH705 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reign,H4427(QalInf) and he reignedH4427(QalPerf) seventeenH7651 yearsH8141 in Jerusalem,H3389 the cityH5892 which the LordH3068 had chosenH977(QalPerf) out of all the tribesH7626 of Israel,H3478 to putH7760(QalInf) his nameH8034 there. And his mother’sH517 nameH8034 [was] NaamahH5279 an Ammonitess.H5985 [14] And he didH6213(QalImpf) evil,H7451 because he preparedH3559(HiphPerf) not his heartH3820 to seekH1875(QalInf) the Lord.H3068 [15] Now the actsH1697 of Rehoboam,H7346 firstH7223 and last,H314 [are] they not writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH1697 of ShemaiahH8098 the prophet,H5030 and of IddoH5714 the seerH2374 concerning genealogies?H3187(HithInf) And [there were] warsH4421 between RehoboamH7346 and JeroboamH3379 continually.H3117 [16] And RehoboamH7346 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers,H1 and was buriedH6912(NiphImpf) in the cityH5892 of David:H1732 and AbijahH29 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead.
