[1] Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in David’s city; and Jehoram his son reigned in his place. [2] He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. [3] Their father gave them great gifts of silver, of gold, and of precious things, with fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn. [4] Now when Jehoram had risen up over the kingdom of his father, and had strengthened himself, he killed all his brothers with the sword, and also some of the princes of Israel. [5] Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. [6] He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did Ahab’s house, for he had Ahab’s daughter as his wife. He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight. [7] However Yahweh would not destroy David’s house, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a lamp to him and to his children always. [8] In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves. [9] Then Jehoram went there with his captains and all his chariots with him. He rose up by night and struck the Edomites who surrounded him, along with the captains of the chariots. [10] So Edom has been in revolt from under the hand of Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time from under his hand, because he had forsaken Yahweh, the God of his fathers. [11] Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and made the inhabitants of Jerusalem play the prostitute, and led Judah astray. [12] A letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, “Yahweh, the God of David your father, says, ‘Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah, [13] but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the prostitute like Ahab’s house did, and also have slain your brothers of your father’s house, who were better than yourself, [14] behold, Yahweh will strike your people with a great plague, including your children, your wives, and all your possessions; [15] and you will have great sickness with a disease of your bowels, until your bowels fall out by reason of the sickness, day by day.’ ” [16] Yahweh stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and of the Arabians who are beside the Ethiopians; [17] and they came up against Judah, broke into it, and carried away all the possessions that were found in the king’s house, including his sons and his wives, so that there was no son left to him except Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons. [18] After all this Yahweh struck him in his bowels with an incurable disease. [19] In process of time, at the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness, and he died of severe diseases. His people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers. [20] He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He departed with no one’s regret. They buried him in David’s city, but not in the tombs of the kings.
King James Version
[1] Now JehoshaphatH3092 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers,H1 and was buriedH6912(NiphImpf) with his fathersH1 in the cityH5892 of David.H1732 And JehoramH3088 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead. [2] And he had brethrenH251 the sonsH1121 of Jehoshaphat,H3092 Azariah,H5838 and Jehiel,H3171 and Zechariah,H2148 and Azariah,H5838 and Michael,H4317 and Shephatiah:H8203 all these [were] the sonsH1121 of JehoshaphatH3092 kingH4428 of Israel.H3478 [3] And their fatherH1 gaveH5414(QalImpf) them greatH7227 giftsH4979 of silver,H3701 and of gold,H2091 and of precious things,H4030 with fencedH4694 citiesH5892 in Judah:H3063 but the kingdomH4467 gaveH5414(QalPerf) he to Jehoram;H3088 because he [was] the firstborn.H1060 [4] Now when JehoramH3088 was risen upH6965(QalImpf) to the kingdomH4467 of his father,H1 he strengthenedH2388(HithImpf) himself, and slewH2026(QalImpf) all his brethrenH251 with the sword,H2719 and [divers] also of the princesH8269 of Israel.H3478 [5] JehoramH3088 [was] thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reign,H4427(QalInf) and he reignedH4427(QalPerf) eightH8083 yearsH8141 in Jerusalem.H3389 [6] And he walkedH3212(QalImpf) in the wayH1870 of the kingsH4428 of Israel,H3478 like as didH6213(QalPerf) the houseH1004 of Ahab:H256 for he had the daughterH1323 of AhabH256 to wife:H802 and he wroughtH6213(QalImpf) [that which was] evilH7451 in the eyesH5869 of the Lord.H3068 [7] Howbeit the LordH3068 wouldH14(QalPerf) not destroyH7843(HiphInf) the houseH1004 of David,H1732 because of the covenantH1285 that he had madeH3772(QalPerf) with David,H1732 and as he promisedH559(QalPerf) to giveH5414(QalInf) a lightH5216 to him and to his sonsH1121 for ever.H3117 [8] In his daysH3117 the EdomitesH123 revoltedH6586(QalPerf) from under the dominionH3027 of Judah,H3063 and madeH4427(HiphImpf) themselves a king.H4428 [9] Then JehoramH3088 went forthH5674(QalImpf) with his princes,H8269 and all his chariotsH7393 with him: and he rose upH6965(QalPerf) by night,H3915 and smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the EdomitesH123 which compassed him in,H5437(QalActPtc) and the captainsH8269 of the chariots.H7393 [10] So the EdomitesH123 revoltedH6586(QalImpf) from under the handH3027 of JudahH3063 unto this day.H3117 The same timeH6256 [also] did LibnahH3841 revoltH6586(QalImpf) from under his hand;H3027 because he had forsakenH5800(QalPerf) the LordH3068 GodH430 of his fathers.H1 [11] Moreover he madeH6213(QalPerf) high placesH1116 in the mountainsH2022 of Judah,H3063 and caused the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of JerusalemH3389 to commit fornication,H2181(HiphImpf) and compelledH5080(HiphImpf) JudahH3063 [thereto]. [12] And there cameH935(QalImpf) a writingH4385 to him from ElijahH452 the prophet,H5030 saying,H559(QalInf) Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 GodH430 of DavidH1732 thy father,H1 Because thou hast not walkedH1980(QalPerf) in the waysH1870 of JehoshaphatH3092 thy father,H1 nor in the waysH1870 of AsaH609 kingH4428 of Judah,H3063 [13] But hast walkedH3212(QalImpf) in the wayH1870 of the kingsH4428 of Israel,H3478 and hast made JudahH3063 and the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of JerusalemH3389 to go a whoring,H2181(HiphImpf) like to the whoredomsH2181(HiphInf) of the houseH1004 of Ahab,H256 and also hast slainH2026(QalPerf) thy brethrenH251 of thy father’sH1 house,H1004 [which were] betterH2896 than thyself: [14] Behold, with a greatH1419 plagueH4046 will the LordH3068 smiteH5062(QalActPtc) thy people,H5971 and thy children,H1121 and thy wives,H802 and all thy goods:H7399 [15] And thou [shalt have] greatH7227 sicknessH2483 by diseaseH4245 of thy bowels,H4578 until thy bowelsH4578 fall outH3318(QalImpf) by reason of the sicknessH2483 dayH3117 by day.H3117 [16] Moreover the LordH3068 stirred upH5782(HiphImpf) against JehoramH3088 the spiritH7307 of the Philistines,H6430 and of the Arabians,H6163 that [were] nearH5921 the Ethiopians:H3569 [17] And they came upH5927(QalImpf) into Judah,H3063 and brakeH1234(QalImpf) into it, and carried awayH7617(QalImpf) all the substanceH7399 that was foundH4672(NiphPtc) in the king’sH4428 house,H1004 and his sonsH1121 also, and his wives;H802 so that there was never a sonH1121 leftH7604(NiphPerf) him, save Jehoahaz,H3059 the youngestH6996 of his sons.H1121 [18] And afterH310 all this the LordH3068 smoteH5062(QalPerf) him in his bowelsH4578 with an incurableH369 disease.H2483 [19] And it came to pass, that in process of time,H3117 afterH3318(QalInf) the endH7093 of twoH8147 years,H3117 his bowelsH4578 fell outH3318(QalPerf) by reasonH5973 of his sickness:H2483 so he diedH4191(QalImpf) of soreH7451 diseases.H8463 And his peopleH5971 madeH6213(QalPerf) no burningH8316 for him, like the burningH8316 of his fathers.H1 [20] ThirtyH7970 and twoH8147 years oldH1121 was he when he began to reign,H4427(QalInf) and he reignedH4427(QalPerf) in JerusalemH3389 eightH8083 years,H8141 and departedH3212(QalImpf) without being desired.H2532 Howbeit they buriedH6912(QalImpf) him in the cityH5892 of David,H1732 but not in the sepulchresH6913 of the kings.H4428
