[1] Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah, of Beersheba. [2] Joash did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes all the days of Jehoiada the priest. [3] Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters. [4] After this, Joash intended to restore Yahweh’s house. [5] He gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather money to repair the house of your God from all Israel from year to year. See that you expedite this matter.” However the Levites didn’t do it right away. [6] The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, “Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the Tent of the Testimony?” [7] For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up God’s house; and they also gave all the dedicated things of Yahweh’s house to the Baals. [8] So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of Yahweh’s house. [9] They made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Yahweh the tax that Moses the servant of God laid on Israel in the wilderness. [10] All the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had filled it. [11] Whenever the chest was brought to the king’s officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance. [12] The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of Yahweh’s house. They hired masons and carpenters to restore Yahweh’s house, and also those who worked iron and bronze to repair Yahweh’s house. [13] So the workmen worked, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands. They set up God’s house as it was designed, and strengthened it. [14] When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, from which were made vessels for Yahweh’s house, even vessels with which to minister and to offer, including spoons and vessels of gold and silver. They offered burnt offerings in Yahweh’s house continually all the days of Jehoiada. [15] But Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died. He was one hundred thirty years old when he died. [16] They buried him in David’s city among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house. [17] Now after the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and bowed down to the king. Then the king listened to them. [18] They abandoned the house of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and the idols, so wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness. [19] Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again to Yahweh, and they testified against them; but they would not listen. [20] The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “God says, ‘Why do you disobey Yahweh’s commandments, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken Yahweh, he has also forsaken you.’ ” [21] They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of Yahweh’s house. [22] Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May Yahweh look at it, and repay it.” [23] At the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came up against him. They came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their plunder to the king of Damascus. [24] For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Yahweh delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash. [25] When they had departed from him (for they left him seriously wounded), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died. They buried him in David’s city, but they didn’t bury him in the tombs of the kings. [26] These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess. [27] Now concerning his sons, the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the rebuilding of God’s house, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. Amaziah his son reigned in his place.

[1] JoashH3101 [was] sevenH7651 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reign,H4427(QalInf) and he reignedH4427(QalPerf) fortyH705 yearsH8141 in Jerusalem.H3389 His mother’sH517 nameH8034 also [was] ZibiahH6645 of Beersheba.H884 [2] And JoashH3101 didH6213(QalImpf) [that which was] rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LordH3068 all the daysH3117 of JehoiadaH3077 the priest.H3548 [3] And JehoiadaH3077 tookH5375(QalImpf) for him twoH8147 wives;H802 and he begatH3205(HiphImpf) sonsH1121 and daughters.H1323 [4] And it came to pass afterH310 this, [that] JoashH3101 was mindedH3820 to repairH2318(PielInf) the houseH1004 of the Lord.H3068 [5] And he gathered togetherH6908(QalImpf) the priestsH3548 and the Levites,H3881 and saidH559(QalImpf) to them, Go outH3318(QalImpv) unto the citiesH5892 of Judah,H3063 and gatherH6908(QalImpv) of all IsraelH3478 moneyH3701 to repairH2388(PielInf) the houseH1004 of your GodH430 fromH1767 yearH8141 to year,H8141 and see that ye hastenH4116(PielImpf) the matter.H1697 Howbeit the LevitesH3881 hastenedH4116(PielPerf) [it] not. [6] And the kingH4428 calledH7121(QalImpf) for JehoiadaH3077 the chief,H7218 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Why hast thou not requiredH1875(QalPerf) of the LevitesH3881 to bring inH935(HiphInf) out of JudahH3063 and out of JerusalemH3389 the collection,H4864 [according to the commandment] of MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of the Lord,H3068 and of the congregationH6951 of Israel,H3478 for the tabernacleH168 of witness?H5715 [7] For the sonsH1121 of Athaliah,H6271 that wickedH4849 woman, had broken upH6555(QalPerf) the houseH1004 of God;H430 and also all the dedicated thingsH6944 of the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 did they bestowH6213(QalPerf) upon Baalim.H1168 [8] And at the king’sH4428 commandmentH559(QalImpf) they madeH6213(QalImpf) aH259 chest,H727 and setH5414(QalImpf) it withoutH2351 at the gateH8179 of the houseH1004 of the Lord.H3068 [9] And they madeH5414(QalImpf) a proclamationH6963 through JudahH3063 and Jerusalem,H3389 to bring inH935(HiphInf) to the LordH3068 the collectionH4864 [that] MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of GodH430 [laid] upon IsraelH3478 in the wilderness.H4057 [10] And all the princesH8269 and all the peopleH5971 rejoiced,H8055(QalImpf) and brought in,H935(HiphImpf) and castH7993(HiphImpf) into the chest,H727 until they had made an end.H3615(PielInf) [11] Now it came to pass, that at what timeH6256 the chestH727 was broughtH935(HiphImpf) unto the king’sH4428 officeH6486 by the handH3027 of the Levites,H3881 and when they sawH7200(QalInf) that [there was] muchH7227 money,H3701 the king’sH4428 scribeH5608(QalActPtc) and the highH7218 priest’sH3548 officerH6496 cameH935(QalPerf) and emptiedH6168(PielImpf) the chest,H727 and tookH5375(QalImpf) it, and carriedH7725 it to his placeH4725 again.H7725(HiphImpf) Thus they didH6213(QalPerf) dayH3117 by day,H3117 and gatheredH622(QalImpf) moneyH3701 in abundance.H7230 [12] And the kingH4428 and JehoiadaH3077 gaveH5414(QalImpf) it to such as didH6213(QalActPtc) the workH4399 of the serviceH5656 of the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 and hiredH7936(QalActPtc) masonsH2672(QalActPtc) and carpentersH2796 to repairH2318(PielInf) the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 and also such as wroughtH2796 ironH1270 and brassH5178 to mendH2388(PielInf) the houseH1004 of the Lord.H3068 [13] So the workmenH4399 wrought,H6213(QalImpf) and the workH4399 wasH5927(QalImpf) perfectedH724 by them,H3027 and they setH5975(HiphImpf) the houseH1004 of GodH430 in his state,H4971 and strengthenedH553(PielImpf) it. [14] And when they had finishedH3615(PielInf) [it], they broughtH935(HiphPerf) the restH7605 of the moneyH3701 beforeH6440 the kingH4428 and Jehoiada,H3077 whereof were madeH6213(QalImpf) vesselsH3627 for the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 [even] vesselsH3627 to minister,H8335 and to offerH5927(HiphInf) [withal], and spoons,H3709 and vesselsH3627 of goldH2091 and silver.H3701 And they offeredH5927(HiphPtc) burnt offeringsH5930 in the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 continuallyH8548 all the daysH3117 of Jehoiada.H3077 [15] But JehoiadaH3077 waxed old,H2204(QalImpf) and was fullH7646(QalImpf) of daysH3117 when he died;H4191(QalImpf) an hundredH3967 and thirtyH7970 yearsH8141 oldH1121 [was he] when he died.H4194 [16] And they buriedH6912(QalImpf) him in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732 among the kings,H4428 because he had doneH6213(QalPerf) goodH2896 in Israel,H3478 both toward God,H430 and toward his house.H1004 [17] Now afterH310 the deathH4194 of JehoiadaH3077 cameH935(QalPerf) the princesH8269 of Judah,H3063 and made obeisanceH7812(HithImpf) to the king.H4428 Then the kingH4428 hearkenedH8085(QalPerf) unto them. [18] And they leftH5800(QalImpf) the houseH1004 of the LordH3068 GodH430 of their fathers,H1 and servedH5647(QalImpf) grovesH842 and idols:H6091 and wrathH7110 came upon JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 for this their trespass.H819 [19] Yet he sentH7971(QalImpf) prophetsH5030 to them, to bring them againH7725(HiphInf) unto the Lord;H3068 and they testifiedH5749(HiphImpf) against them: but they would not give ear.H238(HiphPerf) [20] And the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 cameH3847(QalPerf) upon ZechariahH2148 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 the priest,H3548 which stoodH5975(QalImpf) above the people,H5971 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Thus saithH559(QalPerf) God,H430 Why transgressH5674(QalActPtc) ye the commandmentsH4687 of the Lord,H3068 that ye cannot prosper?H6743(HiphImpf) because ye have forsakenH5800(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 he hath also forsakenH5800(QalImpf) you. [21] And they conspiredH7194(QalImpf) against him, and stonedH7275(QalImpf) him with stonesH68 at the commandmentH4687 of the kingH4428 in the courtH2691 of the houseH1004 of the Lord.H3068 [22] Thus JoashH3101 the kingH4428 rememberedH2142(QalPerf) not the kindnessH2617 which JehoiadaH3077 his fatherH1 had doneH6213(QalPerf) to him, but slewH2026(QalImpf) his son.H1121 And when he died,H4194 he said,H559(QalPerf) The LordH3068 lookH7200(QalImpf) upon [it], and requireH1875(QalImpf) [it]. [23] And it came to pass at the endH8622 of the year,H8141 [that] the hostH2428 of SyriaH758 came upH5927(QalPerf) against him: and they cameH935(QalImpf) to JudahH3063 and Jerusalem,H3389 and destroyedH7843(HiphImpf) all the princesH8269 of the peopleH5971 from among the people,H5971 and sentH7971(PielPerf) all the spoilH7998 of them unto the kingH4428 of Damascus.H1834 [24] For the armyH2428 of the SyriansH758 cameH935(QalPerf) with a smallH4705 company of men,H582 and the LordH3068 deliveredH5414(QalPerf) a veryH3966 greatH7230 hostH2428 into their hand,H3027 because they had forsakenH5800(QalPerf) the LordH3068 GodH430 of their fathers.H1 So they executedH6213(QalPerf) judgmentH8201 against Joash.H3101 [25] And when they were departedH3212(QalInf) from him, (for they leftH5800(QalPerf) him in greatH7227 diseases,H4251) his own servantsH5650 conspiredH7194(HithPerf) against him for the bloodH1818 of the sonsH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 the priest,H3548 and slewH2026(QalImpf) him on his bed,H4296 and he died:H4191(QalImpf) and they buriedH6912(QalImpf) him in the cityH5892 of David,H1732 but they buriedH6912(QalPerf) him not in the sepulchresH6913 of the kings.H4428 [26] And these are they that conspiredH7194(HithPtc) against him; ZabadH2066 the sonH1121 of ShimeathH8100 an Ammonitess,H5985 and JehozabadH3075 the sonH1121 of ShimrithH8116 a Moabitess.H4125 [27] Now [concerning] his sons,H1121 and the greatnessH7235(QalImpf/Qere) of the burdensH4853 [laid] upon him, and the repairingH3247 of the houseH1004 of God,H430 behold, they [are] writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the storyH4097 of the bookH5612 of the kings.H4428 And AmaziahH558 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead.
