[1] Then Solomon said, “Yahweh has said that he would dwell in the thick darkness. [2] But I have built you a house and home, a place for you to dwell in forever.” [3] The king turned his face, and blessed all the assembly of Israel; and all the assembly of Israel stood. [4] He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who spoke with his mouth to David my father, and has with his hands fulfilled it, saying, [5] ‘Since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house in, that my name might be there, and I chose no man to be prince over my people Israel; [6] but now I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.’ [7] Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. [8] But Yahweh said to David my father, ‘Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart; [9] nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son who will come out of your body, he shall build the house for my name.’ [10] “Yahweh has performed his word that he spoke; for I have risen up in the place of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as Yahweh promised, and have built the house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. [11] There I have set the ark, in which is Yahweh’s covenant, which he made with the children of Israel.” [12] He stood before Yahweh’s altar in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands [13] (for Solomon had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the middle of the court; and he stood on it, and knelt down on his knees before all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven). [14] Then he said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth—you who keep covenant and loving kindness with your servants who walk before you with all their heart; [15] who have kept with your servant David my father that which you promised him. Yes, you spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is today. [16] “Now therefore, Yahweh, the God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father that which you have promised him, saying, ‘There shall not fail you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children take heed to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.’ [17] Now therefore, Yahweh, the God of Israel, let your word be verified, which you spoke to your servant David. [18] “But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house which I have built! [19] Yet have respect for the prayer of your servant and to his supplication, Yahweh my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which your servant prays before you; [20] that your eyes may be open toward this house day and night, even toward the place where you have said that you would put your name, to listen to the prayer which your servant will pray toward this place. [21] Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Yes, hear from your dwelling place, even from heaven; and when you hear, forgive. [22] “If a man sins against his neighbor, and an oath is laid on him to cause him to swear, and he comes and swears before your altar in this house, [23] then hear from heaven, act, and judge your servants, bringing retribution to the wicked, to bring his way on his own head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness. [24] “If your people Israel are struck down before the enemy because they have sinned against you, and they turn again and confess your name, and pray and make supplication before you in this house, [25] then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land which you gave to them and to their fathers. [26] “When the sky is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and confess your name, and turn from their sin when you afflict them, [27] then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk, and send rain on your land, which you have given to your people for an inheritance. [28] “If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, locust or caterpillar; if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is— [29] whatever prayer and supplication is made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who will each know his own plague and his own sorrow, and shall spread out his hands toward this house, [30] then hear from heaven your dwelling place and forgive, and render to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know (for you, even you only, know the hearts of the children of men), [31] that they may fear you, to walk in your ways as long as they live in the land which you gave to our fathers. [32] “Moreover, concerning the foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, when he comes from a far country for your great name’s sake and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm, when they come and pray toward this house, [33] then hear from heaven, even from your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you for; that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by your name. [34] “If your people go out to battle against their enemies, by whatever way you send them, and they pray to you toward this city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name; [35] then hear from heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause. [36] “If they sin against you (for there is no man who doesn’t sin), and you are angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to a land far off or near; [37] yet if they come to their senses in the land where they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication to you in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have sinned, we have done perversely, and have dealt wickedly;’ [38] if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, where they have been taken captive, and pray toward their land which you gave to their fathers, and the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name; [39] then hear from heaven, even from your dwelling place, their prayer and their petitions, and maintain their cause, and forgive your people who have sinned against you. [40] “Now, my God, let, I beg you, your eyes be open, and let your ears be attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. [41] “Now therefore arise, Yahweh God, into your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength. Let your priests, Yahweh God, be clothed with salvation, and let your saints rejoice in goodness. [42] “Yahweh God, don’t turn away the face of your anointed. Remember your loving kindnesses to David your servant.”

[17] Now then, O LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 let thy wordH1697 be verified,H539(NiphImpf) which thou hast spokenH1696(PielPerf) unto thy servantH5650 David.H1732 [18] But will GodH430 in very deedH552 dwellH3427(QalImpf) with menH120 on the earth?H776 behold, heavenH8064 and the heavenH8064 of heavensH8064 cannot containH3557(PilpImpf) thee; how much less this houseH1004 which I have built!H1129(QalPerf) [19] Have respectH6437(QalPerf) therefore to the prayerH8605 of thy servant,H5650 and to his supplication,H8467 O LordH3068 my God,H430 to hearkenH8085(QalInf) unto the cryH7440 and the prayerH8605 which thy servantH5650 prayethH6419(HithPtc) beforeH6440 thee: [20] That thine eyesH5869 may be openH6605(QalPasPtc) upon this houseH1004 dayH3119 and night,H3915 upon the placeH4725 whereof thou hast saidH559(QalPerf) that thou wouldest putH7760(QalInf) thy nameH8034 there; to hearkenH8085(QalInf) unto the prayerH8605 which thy servantH5650 prayethH6419(HithImpf) toward this place.H4725 [21] HearkenH8085(QalPerf) therefore unto the supplicationsH8469 of thy servant,H5650 and of thy peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 which they shall makeH6419(HithImpf) toward this place:H4725 hearH8085(QalImpf) thou from thy dwellingH3427(QalInf) place,H4725 [even] from heaven;H8064 and when thou hearest,H8085(QalPerf) forgive.H5545(QalPerf) [22] If a manH376 sinH2398(QalImpf) against his neighbour,H7453 and an oathH423 be laidH5375(QalPerf) upon him to make him swear,H422(HiphInf) and the oathH423 comeH935(QalPerf) beforeH6440 thine altarH4196 in this house;H1004 [23] Then hearH8085(QalImpf) thou from heaven,H8064 and do,H6213(QalPerf) and judgeH8199(QalPerf) thy servants,H5650 by requitingH7725(HiphInf) the wicked,H7563 by recompensingH5414(QalInf) his wayH1870 upon his own head;H7218 and by justifyingH6663(HiphInf) the righteous,H6662 by givingH5414(QalInf) him according to his righteousness.H6666 [24] And if thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478 be put to the worseH5062(NiphImpf) beforeH6440 the enemy,H341(QalActPtc) because they have sinnedH2398(QalImpf) against thee; and shall returnH7725(QalPerf) and confessH3034(HiphPerf) thy name,H8034 and prayH6419(HithPerf) and make supplicationH2603(HithPerf) beforeH6440 thee in this house;H1004 [25] Then hearH8085(QalImpf) thou from the heavens,H8064 and forgiveH5545(QalPerf) the sinH2403 of thy peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 and bring them againH7725(HiphPerf) unto the landH127 which thou gavestH5414(QalPerf) to them and to their fathers.H1 [26] When the heavenH8064 is shut up,H6113(NiphInf) and there is no rain,H4306 because they have sinnedH2398(QalImpf) against thee; [yet] if they prayH6419(HithPerf) toward this place,H4725 and confessH3034(HiphPerf) thy name,H8034 and turnH7725(QalImpf) from their sin,H2403 when thou dost afflictH6031(HiphImpf) them; [27] Then hearH8085(QalImpf) thou from heaven,H8064 and forgiveH5545(QalPerf) the sinH2403 of thy servants,H5650 and of thy peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 when thou hast taughtH3384(HiphImpf) them the goodH2896 way,H1870 wherein they should walk;H3212(QalImpf) and sendH5414(QalPerf) rainH4306 upon thy land,H776 which thou hast givenH5414(QalPerf) unto thy peopleH5971 for an inheritance.H5159 [28] If there be dearthH7458 in the land,H776 if there be pestilence,H1698 if there be blasting,H7711 or mildew,H3420 locusts,H697 or caterpillers;H2625 if their enemiesH341(QalActPtc) besiegeH6887(HiphImpf) them in the citiesH8179 of their land;H776 whatsoever soreH5061 or whatsoever sicknessH4245 [there be]: [29] [Then] what prayerH8605 [or] what supplicationH8467 soever shall be made of any man,H120 or of all thy peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 when every oneH376 shall knowH3045(QalImpf) his own soreH5061 and his own grief,H4341 and shall spread forthH6566(QalPerf) his handsH3709 in this house:H1004 [30] Then hearH8085(QalImpf) thou from heavenH8064 thy dwellingH3427(QalInf) place,H4349 and forgive,H5545(QalPerf) and renderH5414(QalPerf) unto every manH376 according unto all his ways,H1870 whose heartH3824 thou knowest;H3045(QalImpf) (for thou only knowestH3045(QalPerf) the heartsH3824 of the childrenH1121 of men:H120) [31] That they may fearH3372(QalImpf) thee, to walkH3212(QalInf) in thy ways,H1870 so long asH3117 they liveH2416 in the landH127 which thou gavestH5414(QalPerf) unto our fathers.H1 [32] Moreover concerning the stranger,H5237 which is not of thy peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 but is comeH935(QalPerf) from a farH7350 countryH776 for thy greatH1419 name’sH8034 sake, and thy mightyH2389 hand,H3027 and thy stretched outH5186(QalPasPtc) arm;H2220 if they comeH935(QalPerf) and prayH6419(HithPerf) in this house;H1004 [33] Then hearH8085(QalImpf) thou from the heavens,H8064 [even] from thy dwellingH3427(QalInf) place,H4349 and doH6213(QalPerf) according to all that the strangerH5237 callethH7121(QalImpf) to thee for; that all peopleH5971 of the earthH776 may knowH3045(QalImpf) thy name,H8034 and fearH3372(QalInf) thee, as [doth] thy peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 and may knowH3045(QalInf) that this houseH1004 which I have builtH1129(QalPerf) is calledH7121(NiphPerf) by thy name.H8034 [34] If thy peopleH5971 go outH3318(QalImpf) to warH4421 against their enemiesH341(QalActPtc) by the wayH1870 that thou shalt sendH7971(QalImpf) them, and they prayH6419(HithPerf) unto thee towardH1870 this cityH5892 which thou hast chosen,H977(QalPerf) and the houseH1004 which I have builtH1129(QalPerf) for thy name;H8034 [35] Then hearH8085(QalPerf) thou from the heavensH8064 their prayerH8605 and their supplication,H8467 and maintainH6213(QalPerf) their cause.H4941 [36] If they sinH2398(QalImpf) against thee, (for [there is] no manH120 which sinnethH2398(QalImpf) not,) and thou be angryH599(QalPerf) with them, and deliverH5414(QalPerf) them over beforeH6440 [their] enemies,H341(QalActPtc) and they carry them awayH7617(QalPerf) captivesH7617(QalActPtc) unto a landH776 far offH7350 or near;H7138 [37] Yet [if] they bethinkH7725(HiphPerf) themselves in the landH776 whither they are carried captive,H7617(NiphPerf) and turnH7725(QalPerf) and prayH2603(HithPerf) unto thee in the landH776 of their captivity,H7628 saying,H559(QalInf) We have sinned,H2398(QalPerf) we have done amiss,H5753(HiphPerf) and have dealt wickedly;H7561(QalPerf) [38] If they returnH7725(QalPerf) to thee with all their heartH3820 and with all their soulH5315 in the landH776 of their captivity,H7628 whither they have carried them captives,H7617(QalPerf) and prayH6419(HithPerf) towardH1870 their land,H776 which thou gavestH5414(QalPerf) unto their fathers,H1 and [toward] the cityH5892 which thou hast chosen,H977(QalPerf) and toward the houseH1004 which I have builtH1129(QalPerf) for thy name:H8034 [39] Then hearH8085(QalPerf) thou from the heavens,H8064 [even] from thy dwellingH3427(QalInf) place,H4349 their prayerH8605 and their supplications,H8467 and maintainH6213(QalPerf) their cause,H4941 and forgiveH5545(QalPerf) thy peopleH5971 which have sinnedH2398(QalPerf) against thee. [40] Now, my God,H430 let, I beseech thee, thine eyesH5869 be open,H6605(QalPasPtc) and [let] thine earsH241 [be] attentH7183 unto the prayerH8605 [that is made] in this place.H4725 [41] Now therefore arise,H6965(QalImpv) O LordH3068 God,H430 into thy restingH5118 place, thou, and the arkH727 of thy strength:H5797 let thy priests,H3548 O LordH3068 God,H430 be clothedH3847(QalImpf) with salvation,H8668 and let thy saintsH2623 rejoiceH8055(QalImpf) in goodness.H2896 [42] O LordH3068 God,H430 turn not awayH7725(HiphImpf) the faceH6440 of thine anointed:H4899 rememberH2142(QalImpv) the merciesH2617 of DavidH1732 thy servant.H5650
