[1] They continued three years without war between Syria and Israel. [2] In the third year, Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel. [3] The king of Israel said to his servants, “You know that Ramoth Gilead is ours, and we do nothing, and don’t take it out of the hand of the king of Syria?” [4] He said to Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to battle to Ramoth Gilead?”Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” [5] Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for Yahweh’s word.” [6] Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said to them, “Should I go against Ramoth Gilead to battle, or should I refrain?”They said, “Go up; for the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.” [7] But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there here a prophet of Yahweh, that we may inquire of him?” [8] The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Yahweh, Micaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him, for he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.”Jehoshaphat said, “Don’t let the king say so.” [9] Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, “Quickly get Micaiah the son of Imlah.” [10] Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them. [11] Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made himself horns of iron, and said, “Yahweh says, ‘With these you will push the Syrians, until they are consumed.’ ” [12] All the prophets prophesied so, saying, “Go up to Ramoth Gilead and prosper; for Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king.” [13] The messenger who went to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying, “See now, the prophets declare good to the king with one mouth. Please let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak good.” [14] Micaiah said, “As Yahweh lives, what Yahweh says to me, that I will speak.” [15] When he had come to the king, the king said to him, “Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall we forbear?”He answered him, “Go up and prosper; and Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king.” [16] The king said to him, “How many times do I have to adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in Yahweh’s name?” [17] He said, “I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. Yahweh said, ‘These have no master. Let them each return to his house in peace.’ ” [18] The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?” [19] Micaiah said, “Therefore hear Yahweh’s word. I saw Yahweh sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. [20] Yahweh said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ One said one thing, and another said another. [21] A spirit came out and stood before Yahweh, and said, ‘I will entice him.’ [22] Yahweh said to him, ‘How?’He said, ‘I will go out and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’He said, ‘You will entice him, and will also prevail. Go out and do so.’ [23] Now therefore, behold, Yahweh has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets; and Yahweh has spoken evil concerning you.” [24] Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, “Which way did Yahweh’s Spirit go from me to speak to you?” [25] Micaiah said, “Behold, you will see on that day when you go into an inner room to hide yourself.” [26] The king of Israel said, “Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king’s son. [27] Say, ‘The king says, “Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.” ’ ” [28] Micaiah said, “If you return at all in peace, Yahweh has not spoken by me.” He said, “Listen, all you people!” [29] So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. [30] The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and go into the battle, but you put on your robes.” The king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battle. [31] Now the king of Syria had commanded the thirty-two captains of his chariots, saying, “Don’t fight with small nor great, except only with the king of Israel.” [32] When the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “Surely that is the king of Israel!” and they came over to fight against him. Jehoshaphat cried out. [33] When the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him. [34] A certain man drew his bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of the armor. Therefore he said to the driver of his chariot, “Turn around, and carry me out of the battle, for I am severely wounded.” [35] The battle increased that day. The king was propped up in his chariot facing the Syrians, and died at evening. The blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot. [36] A cry went throughout the army about the going down of the sun, saying, “Every man to his city, and every man to his country!” [37] So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria. [38] They washed the chariot by the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood where the prostitutes washed themselves, according to Yahweh’s word which he spoke. [39] Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he built, and all the cities that he built, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? [40] So Ahab slept with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his place. [41] Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. [42] Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. [43] He walked in all the way of Asa his father. He didn’t turn away from it, doing that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes. However, the high places were not taken away. The people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. [44] Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel. [45] Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he showed, and how he fought, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? [46] The remnant of the sodomites, that remained in the days of his father Asa, he put away out of the land. [47] There was no king in Edom. A deputy ruled. [48] Jehoshaphat made ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold, but they didn’t go, for the ships wrecked at Ezion Geber. [49] Then Ahaziah the son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, “Let my servants go with your servants in the ships.” But Jehoshaphat would not. [50] Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in his father David’s city. Jehoram his son reigned in his place. [51] Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned two years over Israel. [52] He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, in which he made Israel to sin. [53] He served Baal and worshiped him, and provoked Yahweh, the God of Israel, to anger in all the ways that his father had done so.

[1] And they continuedH3427(QalImpf) threeH7969 yearsH8141 without warH4421 between SyriaH758 and Israel.H3478 [2] And it came to pass in the thirdH7992 year,H8141 that JehoshaphatH3092 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 came downH3381(QalImpf) to the kingH4428 of Israel.H3478 [3] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his servants,H5650 KnowH3045(QalPerf) ye that RamothH7433 in GileadH1568 [is] ours, and we [be] still,H2814(HiphPtc) [and] takeH3947(QalInf) it not out of the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of Syria?H758 [4] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto Jehoshaphat,H3092 Wilt thou goH3212(QalImpf) with me to battleH4421 to Ramothgilead?H7433 And JehoshaphatH3092 saidH559(QalImpf) to the kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 I [am] as thouH3644 [art], my peopleH5971 as thy people,H5971 my horsesH5483 as thy horses.H5483 [5] And JehoshaphatH3092 saidH559(QalImpf) unto the kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 Enquire,H1875(QalImpv) I pray thee, at the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 to day.H3117 [6] Then the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 gatheredH6908 the prophetsH5030 together,H6908(QalImpf) about fourH702 hundredH3967 men,H376 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Shall I goH3212(QalImpf) against RamothgileadH7433 to battle,H4421 or shall I forbear?H2308(QalImpf) And they said,H559(QalImpf) Go up;H5927(QalImpv) for the LordH136 shall deliverH5414(QalImpf) [it] into the handH3027 of the king.H4428 [7] And JehoshaphatH3092 said,H559(QalImpf) [Is there] not here a prophetH5030 of the LordH3068 besides,H5750 that we might enquireH1875(QalImpf) of him? [8] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Jehoshaphat,H3092 [There is] yet oneH259 man,H376 MicaiahH4321 the sonH1121 of Imlah,H3229 by whom we may enquireH1875(QalInf) of the Lord:H3068 but I hateH8130(QalPerf) him; for he doth not prophesyH5012(HithImpf) goodH2896 concerning me, but evil.H7451 And JehoshaphatH3092 said,H559(QalImpf) Let not the kingH4428 sayH559(QalImpf) so. [9] Then the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 calledH7121(QalImpf) anH259 officer,H5631 and said,H559(QalImpf) HastenH4116(PielImpv) [hither] MicaiahH4321 the sonH1121 of Imlah.H3229 [10] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 and JehoshaphatH3092 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 satH3427(QalActPtc) eachH376 on his throne,H3678 having put onH3847(PualPtc) their robes,H899 in a void placeH1637 in the entranceH6607 of the gateH8179 of Samaria;H8111 and all the prophetsH5030 prophesiedH5012(HithPtc) beforeH6440 them. [11] And ZedekiahH6667 the sonH1121 of ChenaanahH3668 madeH6213(QalImpf) him hornsH7161 of iron:H1270 and he said,H559(QalImpf) Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 With these shalt thou pushH5055(PielImpf) the Syrians,H758 until thou have consumedH3615(PielInf) them. [12] And all the prophetsH5030 prophesiedH5012(NiphPtc) so, saying,H559(QalInf) Go upH5927(QalImpv) to Ramothgilead,H7433 and prosper:H6743(HiphImpv) for the LordH3068 shall deliverH5414(QalPerf) [it] into the king’sH4428 hand.H3027 [13] And the messengerH4397 that was goneH1980(QalPerf) to callH7121(QalInf) MicaiahH4321 spakeH1696(PielPerf) unto him, saying,H559(QalInf) Behold now, the wordsH1697 of the prophetsH5030 [declare] goodH2896 unto the kingH4428 with oneH259 mouth:H6310 let thy word,H1697 I pray thee, be like the wordH1697 of oneH259 of them, and speakH1696(PielPerf) [that which is] good.H2896 [14] And MicaiahH4321 said,H559(QalImpf) [As] the LordH3068 liveth,H2416 what the LordH3068 saithH559(QalImpf) unto me, that will I speak.H1696(PielImpf) [15] So he cameH935(QalImpf) to the king.H4428 And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Micaiah,H4321 shall we goH3212(QalImpf) against RamothgileadH7433 to battle,H4421 or shall we forbear?H2308(QalImpf) And he answeredH559(QalImpf) him, Go,H5927(QalImpv) and prosper:H6743(HiphImpv) for the LordH3068 shall deliverH5414(QalPerf) [it] into the handH3027 of the king.H4428 [16] And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, How many timesH6471 shall I adjureH7650(HiphPtc) thee that thou tellH1696(PielImpf) me nothing but [that which is] trueH571 in the nameH8034 of the Lord?H3068 [17] And he said,H559(QalImpf) I sawH7200(QalPerf) all IsraelH3478 scatteredH6327(NiphPtc) upon the hills,H2022 as sheepH6629 that have not a shepherd:H7462(QalActPtc) and the LordH3068 said,H559(QalImpf) These have no master:H113 let them returnH7725(QalImpf) every manH376 to his houseH1004 in peace.H7965 [18] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Jehoshaphat,H3092 Did I not tellH559(QalPerf) thee that he would prophesyH5012(HithImpf) no goodH2896 concerning me, but evil?H7451 [19] And he said,H559(QalImpf) HearH8085(QalImpv) thou therefore the wordH1697 of the Lord:H3068 I sawH7200(QalPerf) the LordH3068 sittingH3427(QalActPtc) on his throne,H3678 and all the hostH6635 of heavenH8064 standingH5975(QalActPtc) by him on his right handH3225 and on his left.H8040 [20] And the LordH3068 said,H559(QalImpf) Who shall persuadeH6601(PielImpf) Ahab,H256 that he may go upH5927(QalImpf) and fallH5307(QalImpf) at Ramothgilead?H7433 And one saidH559(QalImpf) on this manner,H3541 and another saidH559(QalActPtc) on that manner.H3541 [21] And there came forthH3318(QalImpf) a spirit,H7307 and stoodH5975(QalImpf) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) I will persuadeH6601(PielImpf) him. [22] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Wherewith? And he said,H559(QalImpf) I will go forth,H3318(QalImpf) and I will be a lyingH8267 spiritH7307 in the mouthH6310 of all his prophets.H5030 And he said,H559(QalImpf) Thou shalt persuadeH6601(PielImpf) [him], and prevailH3201(QalImpf) also: go forth,H3318(QalImpv) and doH6213(QalImpv) so. [23] Now therefore, behold, the LordH3068 hath putH5414(QalPerf) a lyingH8267 spiritH7307 in the mouthH6310 of all these thy prophets,H5030 and the LordH3068 hath spokenH1696(PielPerf) evilH7451 concerning thee. [24] But ZedekiahH6667 the sonH1121 of ChenaanahH3668 went near,H5066(QalImpf) and smoteH5221(HiphImpf) MicaiahH4321 on the cheek,H3895 and said,H559(QalImpf) Which wayH335 wentH5674(QalPerf) the SpiritH7307 of the LordH3068 from me to speakH1696(PielInf) unto thee? [25] And MicaiahH4321 said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, thou shalt seeH7200(QalActPtc) in that day,H3117 when thou shalt goH935(QalImpf) into an innerH2315 chamberH2315 to hideH2247(NiphInf) thyself. [26] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 said,H559(QalImpf) TakeH3947(QalImpv) Micaiah,H4321 and carry him backH7725(HiphImpv) unto AmonH526 the governorH8269 of the city,H5892 and to JoashH3101 the king’sH4428 son;H1121 [27] And say,H559(QalPerf) Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the king,H4428 PutH7760(QalImpv) this [fellow] in the prison,H1004 and feedH398(HiphImpv) him with breadH3899 of afflictionH3906 and with waterH4325 of affliction,H3906 until I comeH935(QalInf) in peace.H7965 [28] And MicaiahH4321 said,H559(QalImpf) If thou returnH7725(QalImpf) at allH7725(QalInf) in peace,H7965 the LordH3068 hath not spokenH1696(PielPerf) by me. And he said,H559(QalImpf) Hearken,H8085(QalImpv) O people,H5971 every one of you. [29] So the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 and JehoshaphatH3092 the kingH4428 of JudahH3063 went upH5927(QalImpf) to Ramothgilead.H7433 [30] And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Jehoshaphat,H3092 I will disguiseH2664(HithInf) myself, and enterH935(QalInf) into the battle;H4421 but put thou onH3847(QalImpv) thy robes.H899 And the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 disguisedH2664(HithImpf) himself, and wentH935(QalImpf) into the battle.H4421 [31] But the kingH4428 of SyriaH758 commandedH6680(PielPerf) his thirtyH7970 and twoH8147 captainsH8269 that had rule over his chariots,H7393 saying,H559(QalInf) FightH3898(NiphImpf) neither with smallH6996 nor great,H1419 save only with the kingH4428 of Israel.H3478 [32] And it came to pass, when the captainsH8269 of the chariotsH7393 sawH7200(QalInf) Jehoshaphat,H3092 that they said,H559(QalPerf) Surely it [is] the kingH4428 of Israel.H3478 And they turned asideH5493(QalImpf) to fightH3898(NiphInf) against him: and JehoshaphatH3092 cried out.H2199(QalImpf) [33] And it came to pass, when the captainsH8269 of the chariotsH7393 perceivedH7200(QalInf) that it [was] not the kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 that they turned backH7725(QalImpf) from pursuingH310 him. [34] And a [certain] manH376 drewH4900(QalPerf) a bowH7198 at a venture,H8537 and smoteH5221(HiphImpf) the kingH4428 of IsraelH3478 between the jointsH1694 of the harness:H8302 wherefore he saidH559(QalImpf) unto the driver of his chariot,H7395 TurnH2015(QalImpv) thine hand,H3027 and carry me outH3318(HiphImpv) of the host;H4264 for I am wounded.H2470(HophPerf) [35] And the battleH4421 increasedH5927(QalImpf) that day:H3117 and the kingH4428 was stayed upH5975(HophPtc) in his chariotH4818 againstH5227 the Syrians,H758 and diedH4191(QalImpf) at even:H6153 and the bloodH1818 ran outH3332(QalImpf) of the woundH4347 into the midstH2436 of the chariot.H7393 [36] And there wentH5674(QalImpf) a proclamationH7440 throughout the hostH4264 about the going downH935(QalInf) of the sun,H8121 saying,H559(QalInf) Every manH376 to his city,H5892 and every manH376 to his own country.H776 [37] So the kingH4428 died,H4191(QalImpf) and was broughtH935(QalImpf) to Samaria;H8111 and they buriedH6912(QalImpf) the kingH4428 in Samaria.H8111 [38] And [one] washedH7857(QalImpf) the chariotH7393 in the poolH1295 of Samaria;H8111 and the dogsH3611 licked upH3952(QalImpf) his blood;H1818 and they washedH7364(QalPerf) his armour;H2185 according unto the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 which he spake.H1696(PielPerf) [39] Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of Ahab,H256 and all that he did,H6213(QalPerf) and the ivoryH8127 houseH1004 which he made,H1129(QalPerf) and all the citiesH5892 that he built,H1129(QalPerf) [are] they not writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697 of the kingsH4428 of Israel?H3478 [40] So AhabH256 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers;H1 and AhaziahH274 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead.
