[1] Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He took Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her into David’s city until he had finished building his own house, Yahweh’s house, and the wall around Jerusalem. [2] However, the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was not yet a house built for Yahweh’s name. [3] Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father, except that he sacrificed and burned incense in the high places. [4] The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. [5] In Gibeon, Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask for what I should give you.” [6] Solomon said, “You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, because he walked before you in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you. You have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today. [7] Now, Yahweh my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father. I am just a little child. I don’t know how to go out or come in. [8] Your servant is among your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can’t be numbered or counted for multitude. [9] Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this great people of yours?” [10] This request pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. [11] God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, nor have you asked for riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, [12] behold, I have done according to your word. Behold, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, and after you none will arise like you. [13] I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you for all your days. [14] If you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.” [15] Solomon awoke; and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, and offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants. [16] Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king, and stood before him. [17] The one woman said, “Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house. I delivered a child with her in the house. [18] The third day after I delivered, this woman delivered also. We were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, just us two in the house. [19] This woman’s child died in the night, because she lay on it. [20] She arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me while your servant slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. [21] When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead; but when I had looked at him in the morning, behold, it was not my son whom I bore.” [22] The other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.”The first one said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.” They argued like this before the king. [23] Then the king said, “One says, ‘This is my son who lives, and your son is the dead;’ and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’ ” [24] The king said, “Get me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. [25] The king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.” [26] Then the woman whose the living child was spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no way kill him!”But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide him.” [27] Then the king answered, “Give the first woman the living child, and definitely do not kill him. She is his mother.” [28] All Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice.
King James Version
[1] And SolomonH8010 made affinityH2859(HithImpf) with PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of Egypt,H4714 and tookH3947(QalImpf) Pharaoh’sH6547 daughter,H1323 and broughtH935(HiphImpf) her into the cityH5892 of David,H1732 until he had made an endH3615(PielInf) of buildingH1129(QalInf) his own house,H1004 and the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 and the wallH2346 of JerusalemH3389 round about.H5439 [2] Only the peopleH5971 sacrificedH2076(PielPtc) in high places,H1116 because there was no houseH1004 builtH1129(NiphPerf) unto the nameH8034 of the Lord,H3068 until those days.H3117 [3] And SolomonH8010 lovedH157(QalImpf) the Lord,H3068 walkingH3212(QalInf) in the statutesH2708 of DavidH1732 his father:H1 only he sacrificedH2076(PielPtc) and burnt incenseH6999(HiphPtc) in high places.H1116 [4] And the kingH4428 wentH3212(QalImpf) to GibeonH1391 to sacrificeH2076(QalInf) there; for thatH1931 [was] the greatH1419 high place:H1116 a thousandH505 burnt offeringsH5930 did SolomonH8010 offerH5927(HiphImpf) upon that altar.H4196 [5] In GibeonH1391 the LordH3068 appearedH7200(NiphPerf) to SolomonH8010 in a dreamH2472 by night:H3915 and GodH430 said,H559(QalImpf) AskH7592(QalImpv) what I shall giveH5414(QalImpf) thee. [6] And SolomonH8010 said,H559(QalImpf) Thou hast shewedH6213(QalPerf) unto thy servantH5650 DavidH1732 my fatherH1 greatH1419 mercy,H2617 according as he walkedH1980(QalPerf) beforeH6440 thee in truth,H571 and in righteousness,H6666 and in uprightnessH3483 of heartH3824 with thee; and thou hast keptH8104(QalImpf) for him this greatH1419 kindness,H2617 that thou hast givenH5414(QalImpf) him a sonH1121 to sitH3427(QalActPtc) on his throne,H3678 as [it is] this day.H3117 [7] And now, O LordH3068 my God,H430 thou hast made thy servantH5650 kingH4427(HiphPerf) instead of DavidH1732 my father:H1 and I [am but] a littleH6996 child:H5288 I knowH3045(QalImpf) not [how] to go outH3318(QalInf) or come in.H935(QalInf) [8] And thy servantH5650 [is] in the midstH8432 of thy peopleH5971 which thou hast chosen,H977(QalPerf) a greatH7227 people,H5971 that cannot be numberedH4487(NiphImpf) nor countedH5608(NiphImpf) for multitude.H7230 [9] GiveH5414(QalPerf) therefore thy servantH5650 an understandingH8085(QalActPtc) heartH3820 to judgeH8199(QalInf) thy people,H5971 that I may discernH995(HiphInf) between goodH2896 and bad:H7451 for who is ableH3201(QalImpf) to judgeH8199(QalInf) this thy so greatH3515 a people?H5971 [10] And the speechH1697 pleasedH3190(QalImpf) the Lord,H136 that SolomonH8010 had askedH7592(QalPerf) this thing.H1697 [11] And GodH430 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Because thou hast askedH7592(QalPerf) this thing,H1697 and hast not askedH7592(QalPerf) for thyself longH7227 life;H3117 neither hast askedH7592(QalPerf) richesH6239 for thyself, nor hast askedH7592(QalPerf) the lifeH5315 of thine enemies;H341(QalActPtc) but hast askedH7592(QalPerf) for thyself understandingH995(HiphInf) to discernH8085(QalInf) judgment;H4941 [12] Behold, I have doneH6213(QalPerf) according to thy words:H1697 lo, I have givenH5414(QalPerf) thee a wiseH2450 and an understandingH995(NiphPtc) heart;H3820 so that there was none like thee beforeH6440 thee, neither afterH310 thee shall any ariseH6965(QalImpf) like unto thee. [13] And I have also givenH5414(QalPerf) thee that which thou hast not asked,H7592(QalPerf) both riches,H6239 and honour:H3519 so that there shall not be anyH376 among the kingsH4428 like unto thee all thy days.H3117 [14] And if thou wilt walkH3212(QalImpf) in my ways,H1870 to keepH8104(QalInf) my statutesH2706 and my commandments,H4687 as thy fatherH1 DavidH1732 did walk,H1980(QalPerf) then I will lengthenH748(HiphPerf) thy days.H3117 [15] And SolomonH8010 awoke;H3364(QalImpf) and, behold, [it was] a dream.H2472 And he cameH935(QalImpf) to Jerusalem,H3389 and stoodH5975(QalImpf) beforeH6440 the arkH727 of the covenantH1285 of the Lord,H3068 and offered upH5927(HiphImpf) burnt offerings,H5930 and offeredH6213(QalImpf) peace offerings,H8002 and madeH6213(QalImpf) a feastH4960 to all his servants.H5650 [16] Then cameH935(QalImpf) there twoH8147 women,H802 [that were] harlots,H2181(QalActPtc) unto the king,H4428 and stoodH5975(QalImpf) beforeH6440 him. [17] And the oneH259 womanH802 said,H559(QalImpf) OH994 my lord,H113 I and this womanH802 dwellH3427(QalActPtc) in oneH259 house;H1004 and I was delivered of a childH3205(QalImpf) with her in the house.H1004 [18] And it came to pass the thirdH7992 dayH3117 after that I was delivered,H3205(QalInf) that this womanH802 was deliveredH3205(QalImpf) also: and we [were] together;H3162 [there was] no strangerH2114(QalPtc) with us in the house,H1004 saveH2108 we twoH8147 in the house.H1004 [19] And this woman’sH802 childH1121 diedH4191(QalImpf) in the night;H3915 because she overlaidH7901(QalPerf) it. [20] And she aroseH6965(QalImpf) at midnight,H8432 and tookH3947(QalImpf) my sonH1121 from besideH681 me, while thine handmaidH519 slept,H3463 and laidH7901(HiphImpf) it in her bosom,H2436 and laidH7901(HiphPerf) her deadH4191(QalPtc) childH1121 in my bosom.H2436 [21] And when I roseH6965(QalImpf) in the morningH1242 to give my childH1121 suck,H3243(HiphInf) behold, it was dead:H4191(QalPerf) but when I had consideredH995(HiplImpf) it in the morning,H1242 behold, it was not my son,H1121 which I did bear.H3205(QalPerf) [22] And the otherH312 womanH802 said,H559(QalImpf) Nay; but the livingH2416 [is] my son,H1121 and the deadH4191(QalPtc) [is] thy son.H1121 And this said,H559(QalActPtc) No; but the deadH4191(QalPtc) [is] thy son,H1121 and the livingH2416 [is] my son.H1121 Thus they spakeH1696(PielImpf) beforeH6440 the king.H4428 [23] Then saidH559(QalImpf) the king,H4428 The oneH2063 saith,H559(QalActPtc) This [is] my sonH1121 that liveth,H2416 and thy sonH1121 [is] the dead:H4191(QalPtc) and the otherH2063 saith,H559(QalActPtc) Nay; but thy sonH1121 [is] the dead,H4191(QalPtc) and my sonH1121 [is] the living.H2416 [24] And the kingH4428 said,H559(QalImpf) BringH3947(QalImpv) me a sword.H2719 And they broughtH935(HiphImpf) a swordH2719 beforeH6440 the king.H4428 [25] And the kingH4428 said,H559(QalImpf) DivideH1504(QalImpv) the livingH2416 childH3206 in two,H8147 and giveH5414(QalImpv) halfH2677 to the one,H259 and halfH2677 to the other.H259 [26] Then spakeH559(QalImpf) the womanH802 whose the livingH2416 childH1121 [was] unto the king,H4428 for her bowelsH7356 yearnedH3648(NiphPerf) upon her son,H1121 and she said,H559(QalImpf) OH994 my lord,H113 giveH5414(QalImpv) her the livingH2416 child,H3205(QalPasPtc) and in no wiseH4191(HiphInf) slayH4191(HiphImpf) it. But the other said,H559(QalActPtc) Let it be neither mine nor thine, [but] divideH1504(QalImpv) [it]. [27] Then the kingH4428 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) GiveH5414(QalImpv) her the livingH2416 child,H3205(QalPasPtc) and in no wiseH4191(HiphInf) slayH4191(HiphImpf) it: she [is] the motherH517 thereof. [28] And all IsraelH3478 heardH8085(QalImpf) of the judgmentH4941 which the kingH4428 had judged;H8199(QalPerf) and they fearedH3372(QalImpf) the king:H6440 for they sawH7200(QalPerf) that the wisdomH2451 of GodH430 [was] in him,H7130 to doH6213(QalInf) judgment.H4941
