[1] Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. [2] Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don’t make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!” [3] When he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. [4] But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree. Then he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” [5] He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!” [6] He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. [7] Yahweh’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” [8] He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, God’s Mountain. [9] He came to a cave there, and camped there; and behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” [10] He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” [11] He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.”Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. [12] After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a still small voice. [13] When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” [14] He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” [15] Yahweh said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. [16] Anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place. [17] He who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. [18] Yet I reserved seven thousand in Israel, all the knees of which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.” [19] So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and put his mantle on him. [20] Elisha left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me please kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.”He said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?” [21] He returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, killed them, and boiled their meat with the oxen’s equipment, and gave to the people; and they ate. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and served him.

On Mount Horeb
[1] And Ahab H256 told H5046 (HiphImpf) Jezebel H348 all that Elijah H452 had done, H6213 (QalPerf) and withal how he had slain H2026 (QalPerf) all the prophets H5030 with the sword. H2719 [2] Then Jezebel H348 sent H7971 (QalImpf) a messenger H4397 unto Elijah, H452 saying, H559 (QalInf) So let the gods H430 do H6213 (QalImpf) to me, and more H3254 (HiphImpf) also, if I make H7760 (QalImpf) not thy life H5315 as the life H5315 of one H259 of them by to morrow H4279 about this time. H6256 [3] And when he saw H7200 (QalImpf) that, he arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) for his life, H5315 and came H935 (QalImpf) to Beer-sheba, H884 which belongeth to Judah, H3063 and left H3240 (HiphImpf) his servant H5288 there. [4] But he himself went H1980 (QalPerf) a day’s H3117 journey H1870 into the wilderness, H4057 and came H935 (QalImpf) and sat down H3427 (QalImpf) under a H259 juniper tree: H7574 and he requested H7592 (QalImpf) for himself H5315§ that he might die; H4191 (QalInf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) It is enough; H7227 now, O Lord, H3068 take away H3947 (QalImpv) my life; H5315 for I am not better H2896 than my fathers. H1 [5] And as he lay H7901 (QalImpf) and slept H3462 (QalImpf) under a H259 juniper tree, H7574 behold, then an angel H4397 touched H5060 (QalActPtc) him, and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Arise H6965 (QalImpv) and eat. H398 (QalImpv) [6] And he looked, H5027 (HiphImpf) and, behold, there was a cake H5692 baken on the coals, H7529 and a cruse H6835 of water H4325 at his head. H4763§ And he did eat H398 (QalImpf) and drink, H8354 (QalImpf) and laid him down H7901 (QalImpf) again. H7725 (QalImpf) [7] And the angel H4397 of the Lord H3068 came again H7725 (QalImpf) the second time, H8145 and touched H5060 (QalImpf) him, and said, H559 (QalImpf) Arise H6965 (QalImpv) and eat; H398 (QalImpv) because the journey H1870 is too great H7227 for thee. [8] And he arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and did eat H398 (QalImpf) and drink, H8354 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) in the strength H3581 of that meat H396 forty H705 days H3117 and forty H705 nights H3915 unto Horeb H2722 the mount H2022 of God. H430 [9] And he came H935 (QalImpf) thither unto a cave, H4631 and lodged H3885 (QalImpf) there; and, behold, the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came to him, and he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? H452 [10] And he said, H559 (QalImpf) I have been very H7065 (PielInf) jealous H7065 (PielPerf) for the Lord H3068 God H430 of hosts: H6635 for the children H1121 of Israel H3478 have forsaken H5800 (QalPerf) thy covenant, H1285 thrown down H2040 (QalPerf) thine altars, H4196 and slain H2026 (QalPerf) thy prophets H5030 with the sword; H2719 and I, even I only, am left; H3498 (NiphImpf) and they seek H1245 (PielImpf) my life, H5315 to take it away. H3947 (QalInf) [11] And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Go forth, H3318 (QalImpv) and stand H5975 (QalPerf) upon the mount H2022 before H6440 the Lord. H3068 And, behold, the Lord H3068 passed by, H5674 (QalActPtc) and a great H1419 and strong H2389 wind H7307 rent H6561 (PielPtc) the mountains, H2022 and brake in pieces H7665 (PielPtc) the rocks H5553 before H6440 the Lord; H3068 but the Lord H3068 was not in the wind: H7307 and after H310 the wind H7307 an earthquake; H7494 but the Lord H3068 was not in the earthquake: H7494 [12] and after H310 the earthquake H7494 a fire; H784 but the Lord H3068 was not in the fire: H784 and after H310 the fire H784 a still H1827 small H1851 voice. H6963 [13] And it was so, when Elijah H452 heard H8085 (QalInf) it, that he wrapped H3874 (HiphImpf) his face H6440 in his mantle, H155 and went out, H3318 (QalImpf) and stood H5975 (QalImpf) in the entering in H6607 of the cave. H4631 And, behold, there came a voice H6963 unto him, and said, H559 (QalImpf) What doest thou here, Elijah? H452 [14] And he said, H559 (QalImpf) I have been very H7065 (PielInf) jealous H7065 (PielPerf) for the Lord H3068 God H430 of hosts: H6635 because the children H1121 of Israel H3478 have forsaken H5800 (QalPerf) thy covenant, H1285 thrown down H2040 (QalPerf) thine altars, H4196 and slain H2026 (QalPerf) thy prophets H5030 with the sword; H2719 and I, even I only, am left; H3498 (NiphImpf) and they seek H1245 (PielImpf) my life, H5315 to take it away. H3947 (QalInf) [15] And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Go, H3212 (QalImpv) return H7725 (QalImpv) on thy way H1870 to the wilderness H4057 of Damascus: H1834 and when thou comest, H935 (QalPerf) anoint H4886 (QalPerf) Hazael H2371 to be king H4428 over Syria: H758 [16] and Jehu H3058 the son H1121 of Nimshi H5250 shalt thou anoint H4886 (QalImpf) to be king H4428 over Israel: H3478 and Elisha H477 the son H1121 of Shaphat H8202 of Abel-meholah H65 shalt thou anoint H4886 (QalImpf) to be prophet H5030 in thy room. [17] And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth H4422 (NiphPtc) the sword H2719 of Hazael H2371 shall Jehu H3058 slay: H4191 (HiphImpf) and him that escapeth H4422 (NiphPtc) from the sword H2719 of Jehu H3058 shall Elisha H477 slay. H4191 (HiphImpf) [18] Yet I have left H7604 (HiphPerf)§ me seven H7651 thousand H505 in Israel, H3478 all the knees H1290 which have not bowed H3766 (QalPerf) unto Baal, H1168 and every mouth H6310 which hath not kissed H5401 (QalPerf) him.The Call of Elisha
[19] So he departed H3212 (QalImpf) thence, and found H4672 (QalImpf) Elisha H477 the son H1121 of Shaphat, H8202 who was plowing H2790 (QalActPtc) with twelve H8147 yoke H6776 of oxen before H6440 him, and he with the twelfth: H8147 and Elijah H452 passed H5674 (QalImpf) by him, and cast H7993 (HiphImpf) his mantle H155 upon him. [20] And he left H5800 (QalImpf) the oxen, H1241 and ran H7323 (QalImpf) after H310 Elijah, H452 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Let me, I pray thee, kiss H5401 (QalImpf) my father H1 and my mother, H517 and then I will follow H3212 (QalImpf) thee. And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Go back H3212 (QalImpv) again: H7725 (QalImpv)§ for what have I done H6213 (QalPerf) to thee? [21] And he returned back H7725 (QalImpf) from him, H310 and took H3947 (QalImpf) a yoke H6776 of oxen, H1241 and slew H2076 (QalImpf) them, and boiled H1310 (PielPerf) their flesh H1320 with the instruments H3627 of the oxen, H1241 and gave H5414 (QalImpf) unto the people, H5971 and they did eat. H398 (QalImpf) Then he arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) after H310 Elijah, H452 and ministered H8334 (PielImpf) unto him.Footnotes
