[1] Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites, [2] of the nations concerning which Yahweh said to the children of Israel, “You shall not go among them, neither shall they come among you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon joined to these in love. [3] He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines. His wives turned his heart away. [4] When Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Yahweh his God, as the heart of David his father was. [5] For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. [6] Solomon did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and didn’t go fully after Yahweh, as David his father did. [7] Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the mountain that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon. [8] So he did for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods. [9] Yahweh was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from Yahweh, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, [10] and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods; but he didn’t keep that which Yahweh commanded. [11] Therefore Yahweh said to Solomon, “Because this is done by you, and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant. [12] Nevertheless, I will not do it in your days, for David your father’s sake; but I will tear it out of your son’s hand. [13] However, I will not tear away all the kingdom; but I will give one tribe to your son, for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.” [14] Yahweh raised up an adversary to Solomon: Hadad the Edomite. He was one of the king’s offspring in Edom. [15] For when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the army had gone up to bury the slain, and had struck every male in Edom [16] (for Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom), [17] Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, to go into Egypt, when Hadad was still a little child. [18] They arose out of Midian and came to Paran; and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house, and appointed him food, and gave him land. [19] Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him as wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. [20] The sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh’s house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh’s house among the sons of Pharaoh. [21] When Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me depart, that I may go to my own country.” [22] Then Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me, that behold, you seek to go to your own country?”He answered, “Nothing, however only let me depart.” [23] God raised up an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord, Hadadezer king of Zobah. [24] He gathered men to himself, and became captain over a troop, when David killed them of Zobah. They went to Damascus and lived there, and reigned in Damascus. [25] He was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, in addition to the mischief of Hadad. He abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria. [26] Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, also lifted up his hand against the king. [27] This was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breach of his father David’s city. [28] The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon saw the young man that he was industrious, and he put him in charge of all the labor of the house of Joseph. [29] At that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the way. Now Ahijah had clad himself with a new garment; and the two of them were alone in the field. [30] Ahijah took the new garment that was on him, and tore it in twelve pieces. [31] He said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces; for Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to you [32] (but he shall have one tribe, for my servant David’s sake and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel), [33] because they have forsaken me, and have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon. They have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in my eyes, and to keep my statutes and my ordinances, as David his father did. [34] “ ‘However, I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant’s sake whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes, [35] but I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand and will give it to you, even ten tribes. [36] I will give one tribe to his son, that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for myself to put my name there. [37] I will take you, and you shall reign according to all that your soul desires, and shall be king over Israel. [38] It shall be, if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do that which is right in my eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, that I will be with you, and will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel to you. [39] I will afflict the offspring of David for this, but not forever.’ ” [40] Therefore Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon. [41] Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, aren’t they written in the book of the acts of Solomon? [42] The time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. [43] Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in his father David’s city; and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.
King James Version
[1] But kingH4428 SolomonH8010 lovedH157(QalPerf) manyH7227 strangeH5237 women,H802 together with the daughterH1323 of Pharaoh,H6547 women of the Moabites,H4125 Ammonites,H5984 Edomites,H130 Zidonians,H6722 [and] Hittites;H2850 [2] Of the nationsH1471 [concerning] which the LordH3068 saidH559(QalPerf) unto the childrenH1121 of Israel,H3478 Ye shall not go inH935(QalImpf) to them, neither shall they come inH935(QalImpf) unto you: [for] surelyH403 they will turn awayH5186(HiphImpf) your heartH3824 afterH310 their gods:H430 SolomonH8010 claveH1692(QalPerf) unto these in love.H157(QalInf) [3] And he had sevenH7651 hundredH3967 wives,H802 princesses,H8282 and threeH7969 hundredH3967 concubines:H6370 and his wivesH802 turned awayH5186(HiphImpf) his heart.H3820 [4] For it came to pass, whenH6256 SolomonH8010 was old,H2209 [that] his wivesH802 turned awayH5186(HiphPerf) his heartH3824 afterH310 otherH312 gods:H430 and his heartH3824 was not perfectH8003 with the LordH3068 his God,H430 as [was] the heartH3824 of DavidH1732 his father.H1 [5] For SolomonH8010 wentH3212(QalImpf) afterH310 AshtorethH6253 the goddessH430 of the Zidonians,H6722 and afterH310 MilcomH4445 the abominationH8251 of the Ammonites.H5984 [6] And SolomonH8010 didH6213(QalImpf) evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the Lord,H3068 and went not fullyH4390(PielPerf) afterH310 the Lord,H3068 as [did] DavidH1732 his father.H1 [7] Then did SolomonH8010 buildH1129(QalImpf) an high placeH1116 for Chemosh,H3645 the abominationH8251 of Moab,H4124 in the hillH2022 that [is] beforeH6440 Jerusalem,H3389 and for Molech,H4432 the abominationH8251 of the childrenH1121 of Ammon.H5983 [8] And likewise didH6213(QalPerf) he for all his strangeH5237 wives,H802 which burnt incenseH6999(HiphPtc) and sacrificedH2076(PielPtc) unto their gods.H430 [9] And the LordH3068 was angryH599(HithImpf) with Solomon,H8010 because his heartH3824 was turnedH5186(QalPerf) from the LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 which had appearedH7200(NiphPerf) unto him twice,H6471 [10] And had commandedH6680(PielPerf) him concerning this thing,H1697 that he should not goH3212(QalInf) afterH310 otherH312 gods:H430 but he keptH8104(QalPerf) not that which the LordH3068 commanded.H6680(PielPerf) [11] Wherefore the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Solomon,H8010 Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not keptH8104(QalPerf) my covenantH1285 and my statutes,H2708 which I have commandedH6680(PielPerf) thee, I will surelyH7167(QalInf) rendH7167(QalImpf) the kingdomH4467 from thee, and will giveH5414(QalPerf) it to thy servant.H5650 [12] Notwithstanding in thy daysH3117 I will not doH6213(QalImpf) it for DavidH1732 thy father’sH1 sake: [but] I will rendH7167(QalImpf) it out of the handH3027 of thy son.H1121 [13] HowbeitH7535 I will not rend awayH7167(QalImpf) all the kingdom;H4467 [but] will giveH5414(QalImpf) oneH259 tribeH7626 to thy sonH1121 for DavidH1732 my servant’sH5650 sake, and for Jerusalem’sH3389 sake which I have chosen.H977(QalPerf) [14] And the LordH3068 stirred upH6965(HiphImpf) an adversaryH7854 unto Solomon,H8010 HadadH1908 the Edomite:H130 he [was] of the king’sH4428 seedH2233 in Edom.H123 [15] For it came to pass, when DavidH1732 was in Edom,H123 and JoabH3097 the captainH8269 of the hostH6635 was gone upH5927(QalInf) to buryH6912(PielInf) the slain,H2491 after he had smittenH5221(HiphImpf) every maleH2145 in Edom;H123 [16] (For sixH8337 monthsH2320 did JoabH3097 remainH3427(QalPerf) there with all Israel,H3478 until he had cut offH3772(HiphPerf) every maleH2145 in Edom:H123) [17] That HadadH111 fled,H1272(QalImpf) he and certainH582 EdomitesH130 of his father’sH1 servantsH5650 with him, to goH935(QalInf) into Egypt;H4714 HadadH1908 [being] yet a littleH6996 child.H5288 [18] And they aroseH6965(QalImpf) out of Midian,H4080 and cameH935(QalImpf) to Paran:H6290 and they tookH3947(QalImpf) menH582 with them out of Paran,H6290 and they cameH935(QalImpf) to Egypt,H4714 unto PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of Egypt;H4714 which gaveH5414(QalImpf) him an house,H1004 and appointedH559(QalPerf) him victuals,H3899 and gaveH5414(QalPerf) him land.H776 [19] And HadadH1908 foundH4672(QalImpf) greatH3966 favourH2580 in the sightH5869 of Pharaoh,H6547 so that he gaveH5414(QalImpf) him to wifeH802 the sisterH269 of his own wife,H802 the sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 the queen.H1377 [20] And the sisterH269 of TahpenesH8472 bareH3205(QalImpf) him GenubathH1592 his son,H1121 whom TahpenesH8472 weanedH1580(QalImpf) inH8432 Pharaoh’sH6547 house:H1004 and GenubathH1592 was in Pharaoh’sH6547 householdH1004 amongH8432 the sonsH1121 of Pharaoh.H6547 [21] And when HadadH1908 heardH8085(QalPerf) in EgyptH4714 that DavidH1732 sleptH7901(QalPerf) with his fathers,H1 and that JoabH3097 the captainH8269 of the hostH6635 was dead,H4191(QalPerf) HadadH1908 saidH559(QalImpf) to Pharaoh,H6547 Let me depart,H7971(PielImpv) that I may goH3212(QalImpf) to mine own country.H776 [22] Then PharaohH6547 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, But what hast thou lackedH2638 with me, that, behold, thou seekestH1245(PielPtc) to goH3212(QalInf) to thine own country?H776 And he answered,H559(QalImpf) Nothing: howbeit let me goH7971(PielImpf) in any wise.H7971(PielInf) [23] And GodH430 stirred him upH6965(HiphImpf) [another] adversary,H7854 RezonH7331 the sonH1121 of Eliadah,H450 which fledH1272(QalPerf) from his lordH113 HadadezerH1909 kingH4428 of Zobah:H6678 [24] And he gatheredH6908(QalImpf) menH582 unto him, and became captainH8269 over a band,H1416 when DavidH1732 slewH2026(QalInf) them [of Zobah]: and they wentH3212(QalImpf) to Damascus,H1834 and dweltH3427(QalImpf) therein, and reignedH4427(QalImpf) in Damascus.H1834 [25] And he was an adversaryH7854 to IsraelH3478 all the daysH3117 of Solomon,H8010 beside the mischiefH7451 that HadadH1908 [did]: and he abhorredH6973(QalImpf) Israel,H3478 and reignedH4427(QalImpf) over Syria.H758 [26] And JeroboamH3379 the sonH1121 of Nebat,H5028 an EphrathiteH673 of Zereda,H6868 Solomon’sH8010 servant,H5650 whose mother’sH517 nameH8034 [was] Zeruah,H6871 a widowH490 woman,H802 even he lifted upH7311(HiphImpf) [his] handH3027 against the king.H4428 [27] And this [was] the causeH1697 that he lifted upH7311(HiphPerf) [his] handH3027 against the king:H4428 SolomonH8010 builtH1129(QalPerf) Millo,H4407 [and] repairedH5462(QalPerf) the breachesH6556 of the cityH5892 of DavidH1732 his father.H1 [28] And the manH376 JeroboamH3379 [was] a mighty manH1368 of valour:H2428 and SolomonH8010 seeingH7200(QalImpf) the young manH5288 that he was industrious,H6213(QalActPtc) he made him rulerH6485(HiphImpf) over all the chargeH5447 of the houseH1004 of Joseph.H3130 [29] And it came to pass at that timeH6256 when JeroboamH3379 went outH3318(QalPerf) of Jerusalem,H3389 that the prophetH5030 AhijahH281 the ShiloniteH7888 foundH4672(QalImpf) him in the way;H1870 and he had cladH3680(HithPtc) himself with a newH2319 garment;H8008 and they twoH8147 [were] alone in the field:H7704 [30] And AhijahH281 caughtH8610(QalImpf) the newH2319 garmentH8008 that [was] on him, and rentH7167(QalImpf) it [in] twelveH8147 pieces:H7168 [31] And he saidH559(QalImpf) to Jeroboam,H3379 TakeH3947(QalImpv) thee tenH6235 pieces:H7168 for thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 the GodH430 of Israel,H3478 Behold, I will rendH7167(QalActPtc) the kingdomH4467 out of the handH3027 of Solomon,H8010 and will giveH5414(QalPerf) tenH6235 tribesH7626 to thee: [32] (But he shall have oneH259 tribeH7626 for my servantH5650 David’sH1732 sake, and for Jerusalem’sH3389 sake, the cityH5892 which I have chosenH977(QalPerf) out of all the tribesH7626 of Israel:H3478) [33] Because that they have forsakenH5800(QalPerf) me, and have worshippedH7812(HithImpf) AshtorethH6253 the goddessH430 of the Zidonians,H6722 ChemoshH3645 the godH430 of the Moabites,H4124 and MilcomH4445 the godH430 of the childrenH1121 of Ammon,H5983 and have not walkedH1980(QalPerf) in my ways,H1870 to doH6213(QalInf) [that which is] rightH3477 in mine eyes,H5869 and [to keep] my statutesH2708 and my judgments,H4941 as [did] DavidH1732 his father.H1 [34] Howbeit I will not takeH3947(QalImpf) the whole kingdomH4467 out of his hand:H3027 but I will makeH7896(QalImpf) him princeH5387 all the daysH3117 of his lifeH2416 for DavidH1732 my servant’sH5650 sake, whom I chose,H977(QalPerf) because he keptH8104(QalPerf) my commandmentsH4687 and my statutes:H2708 [35] But I will takeH3947(QalPerf) the kingdomH4410 out of his son’sH1121 hand,H3027 and will giveH5414(QalPerf) it unto thee, [even] tenH6235 tribes.H7626 [36] And unto his sonH1121 will I giveH5414(QalImpf) oneH259 tribe,H7626 that DavidH1732 my servantH5650 may have a lightH5216 alwayH3117 beforeH6440 me in Jerusalem,H3389 the cityH5892 which I have chosenH977(QalPerf) me to putH7760(QalInf) my nameH8034 there. [37] And I will takeH3947(QalImpf) thee, and thou shalt reignH4427(QalPerf) according to all that thy soulH5315 desireth,H183(PielImpf) and shalt be kingH4428 over Israel.H3478 [38] And it shall be, if thou wilt hearkenH8085(QalImpf) unto all that I commandH6680(PielImpf) thee, and wilt walkH1980(QalPerf) in my ways,H1870 and doH6213(QalPerf) [that is] rightH3477 in my sight,H5869 to keepH8104(QalInf) my statutesH2708 and my commandments,H4687 as DavidH1732 my servantH5650 did;H6213(QalPerf) that I will be with thee, and buildH1129(QalPerf) thee a sureH539(NiphPtc) house,H1004 as I builtH1129(QalPerf) for David,H1732 and will giveH5414(QalPerf) IsraelH3478 unto thee. [39] And I will for this afflictH6031(PielImpf) the seedH2233 of David,H1732 but not for ever.H3117 [40] SolomonH8010 soughtH1245(PielImpf) therefore to killH4191(HiphInf) Jeroboam.H3379 And JeroboamH3379 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and fledH1272(QalImpf) into Egypt,H4714 unto ShishakH7895 kingH4428 of Egypt,H4714 and was in EgyptH4714 until the deathH4194 of Solomon.H8010 [41] And the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of Solomon,H8010 and all that he did,H6213(QalPerf) and his wisdom,H2451 [are] they not writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH5612 of the actsH1697 of Solomon?H8010 [42] And the timeH3117 that SolomonH8010 reignedH4427(QalPerf) in JerusalemH3389 over all IsraelH3478 [was] fortyH705 years.H8141 [43] And SolomonH8010 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers,H1 and was buriedH6912(NiphImpf) in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732 his father:H1 and RehoboamH7346 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead.
