[1] At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick. [2] Jeroboam said to his wife, “Please get up and disguise yourself, so that you won’t be recognized as Jeroboam’s wife. Go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who said that I would be king over this people. [3] Take with you ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will become of the child.” [4] Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose and went to Shiloh, and came to Ahijah’s house. Now Ahijah could not see, for his eyes were set by reason of his age. [5] Yahweh said to Ahijah, “Behold, Jeroboam’s wife is coming to inquire of you concerning her son, for he is sick. Tell her such and such; for it will be, when she comes in, that she will pretend to be another woman.” [6] So when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in at the door, he said, “Come in, Jeroboam’s wife! Why do you pretend to be another? For I am sent to you with heavy news. [7] Go, tell Jeroboam, ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: “Because I exalted you from among the people, and made you prince over my people Israel, [8] and tore the kingdom away from David’s house, and gave it you; and yet you have not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in my eyes, [9] but have done evil above all who were before you, and have gone and made for yourself other gods, molten images, to provoke me to anger, and have cast me behind your back, [10] therefore, behold, I will bring evil on the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam everyone who urinates on a wall,§ he who is shut up and he who is left at large in Israel, and will utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam, as a man sweeps away dung until it is all gone. [11] The dogs will eat he who belongs to Jeroboam who dies in the city; and the birds of the sky will eat he who dies in the field, for Yahweh has spoken it.” ’ [12] Arise therefore, and go to your house. When your feet enter into the city, the child will die. [13] All Israel will mourn for him and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam will come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward Yahweh, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam. [14] Moreover Yahweh will raise up a king for himself over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam. This is the day! What? Even now. [15] For Yahweh will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and he will root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers, and will scatter them beyond the River, because they have made their Asherah poles, provoking Yahweh to anger. [16] He will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he has sinned, and with which he has made Israel to sin.” [17] Jeroboam’s wife arose and departed, and came to Tirzah. As she came to the threshold of the house, the child died. [18] All Israel buried him and mourned for him, according to Yahweh’s word, which he spoke by his servant Ahijah the prophet. [19] The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he fought and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. [20] The days which Jeroboam reigned were twenty two years; then he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place. [21] Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. [22] Judah did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they committed, above all that their fathers had done. [23] For they also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree. [24] There were also sodomites in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations which Yahweh drove out before the children of Israel. [25] In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem; [26] and he took away the treasures of Yahweh’s house and the treasures of the king’s house. He even took away all of it, including all the gold shields which Solomon had made. [27] King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king’s house. [28] It was so, that as often as the king went into Yahweh’s house, the guard bore them, and brought them back into the guard room. [29] Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? [30] There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. [31] Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in David’s city. His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. Abijam his son reigned in his place.

[6] And it was [so], when AhijahH281 heardH8085(QalInf) the soundH6963 of her feet,H7272 as she came inH935(QalActPtc) at the door,H6607 that he said,H559(QalImpf) Come in,H935(QalImpv) thou wifeH802 of Jeroboam;H3379 why feignest thou thyself [to be] another?H5234(HithPtc) for I [am] sentH7971(QalPasPtc) to thee [with] heavyH7186 [tidings]. [7] Go,H3212(QalImpv) tellH559(QalImpv) Jeroboam,H3379 Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 GodH430 of Israel,H3478 Forasmuch asH3282 I exaltedH7311(HiphPerf) thee from amongH8432 the people,H5971 and madeH5414(QalImpf) thee princeH5057 over my peopleH5971 Israel,H3478 [8] And rentH7167 the kingdomH4467 awayH7167(QalImpf) from the houseH1004 of David,H1732 and gaveH5414(QalImpf) it thee: and [yet] thou hast not been as my servantH5650 David,H1732 who keptH8104(QalPerf) my commandments,H4687 and who followedH1980(QalPerf) me with all his heart,H3824 to doH6213(QalInf) [that] only [which was] rightH3477 in mine eyes;H5869 [9] But hast doneH6213(QalInf) evilH7489(HiphImpf) above all that were beforeH6440 thee: for thou hast goneH3212(QalImpf) and madeH6213(QalImpf) thee otherH312 gods,H430 and molten images,H4541 to provoke me to anger,H3707(HiphInf) and hast castH7993(HiphPerf) me behindH310 thy back:H1458 [10] Therefore, behold, I will bringH935(HiphPtc) evilH7451 upon the houseH1004 of Jeroboam,H3379 and will cut offH3772(HiphPerf) from JeroboamH3379 him that pissethH8366(HiphPtc) against the wall,H7023 [and] him that is shut upH6113(QalPasPtc) and leftH5800(QalPasPtc) in Israel,H3478 and will take awayH1197(PielPerf) the remnantH310 of the houseH1004 of Jeroboam,H3379 as a man taketh awayH1197(PielImpf) dung,H1557 till it be all gone.H8552(QalInf) [11] Him that diethH4191(QalPtc) of JeroboamH3379 in the cityH5892 shall the dogsH3611 eat;H398(QalImpf) and him that diethH4191(QalPtc) in the fieldH7704 shall the fowlsH5775 of the airH8064 eat:H398(QalImpf) for the LordH3068 hath spokenH1696(PielPerf) [it]. [12] AriseH6965(QalImpv) thou therefore, getH3212(QalImpv) thee to thine own house:H1004 [and] when thy feetH7272 enterH935(QalInf) into the city,H5892 the childH3206 shall die.H4191(QalPerf) [13] And all IsraelH3478 shall mournH5594(QalPerf) for him, and buryH6912(QalPerf) him: for he only of JeroboamH3379 shall comeH935(QalImpf) to the grave,H6913 because in him there is foundH4672(NiphPerf) [some] goodH2896 thingH1697 toward the LordH3068 GodH430 of IsraelH3478 in the houseH1004 of Jeroboam.H3379 [14] Moreover the LordH3068 shall raise him upH6965(HiphPerf) a kingH4428 over Israel,H3478 who shall cut offH3772(HiphImpf) the houseH1004 of JeroboamH3379 that day:H3117 but what? even now. [15] For the LordH3068 shall smiteH5221(HiphPerf) Israel,H3478 as a reedH7070 is shakenH5110(QalImpf) in the water,H4325 and he shall root upH5428(QalPerf) IsraelH3478 out of this goodH2896 land,H127 which he gaveH5414(QalPerf) to their fathers,H1 and shall scatterH2219(PielPerf) them beyondH5676 the river,H5104 because they have madeH6213(QalPerf) their groves,H842 provoking the LordH3068 to anger.H3707(HiphPtc) [16] And he shall giveH5414 IsraelH3478 upH5414(QalImpf) becauseH1558 of the sinsH2403 of Jeroboam,H3379 who did sin,H2398(QalPerf) and who made IsraelH3478 to sin.H2398(HiphPerf) [17] And Jeroboam’sH3379 wifeH802 arose,H6965(QalImpf) and departed,H3212(QalImpf) and cameH935(QalImpf) to Tirzah:H8656 [and] when she cameH935(QalActPtc) to the thresholdH5592 of the door,H1004 the childH5288 died;H4191(QalPerf) [18] And they buriedH6912(QalImpf) him; and all IsraelH3478 mournedH5594(QalImpf) for him, according to the wordH1697 of the Lord,H3068 which he spakeH1696(PielPerf) by the handH3027 of his servantH5650 AhijahH281 the prophet.H5030 [19] And the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of Jeroboam,H3379 how he warred,H3898(NiphPerf) and how he reigned,H4427(QalPerf) behold, they [are] writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697 of the kingsH4428 of Israel.H3478 [20] And the daysH3117 which JeroboamH3379 reignedH4427(QalPerf) [were] twoH8147 and twentyH6242 years:H8141 and he sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers,H1 and NadabH5070 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead. [21] And RehoboamH7346 the sonH1121 of SolomonH8010 reignedH4427(QalPerf) in Judah.H3063 RehoboamH7346 [was] fortyH705 and oneH259 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reign,H4427(QalInf) and he reignedH4427(QalPerf) seventeenH7651 yearsH8141 in Jerusalem,H3389 the cityH5892 which the LordH3068 did chooseH977(QalPerf) out of all the tribesH7626 of Israel,H3478 to putH7760(QalInf) his nameH8034 there. And his mother’sH517 nameH8034 [was] NaamahH5279 an Ammonitess.H5985 [22] And JudahH3063 didH6213(QalImpf) evilH7451 in the sightH5869 of the Lord,H3068 and they provoked him to jealousyH7065(PielImpf) with their sinsH2403 which they had committed,H2398(QalPerf) above all that their fathersH1 had done.H6213(QalPerf) [23] For they also builtH1129(QalImpf) them high places,H1116 and images,H4676 and groves,H842 on every highH1364 hill,H1389 and under every greenH7488 tree.H6086 [24] And there were also sodomitesH6945 in the land:H776 [and] they didH6213(QalPerf) according to all the abominationsH8441 of the nationsH1471 which the LordH3068 cast outH3423(HiphPerf) beforeH6440 the childrenH1121 of Israel.H3478 [25] And it came to pass in the fifthH2549 yearH8141 of kingH4428 Rehoboam,H7346 [that] ShishakH7895 kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 came upH5927(QalPerf) against Jerusalem:H3389 [26] And he took awayH3947(QalImpf) the treasuresH214 of the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 and the treasuresH214 of the king’sH4428 house;H1004 he even took awayH3947(QalPerf) all: and he took awayH3947(QalImpf) all the shieldsH4043 of goldH2091 which SolomonH8010 had made.H6213(QalPerf) [27] And kingH4428 RehoboamH7346 madeH6213(QalImpf) in their stead brasenH5178 shields,H4043 and committedH6485(HiphPerf) [them] unto the handsH3027 of the chiefH8269 of the guard,H7323(QalPtc) which keptH8104(QalActPtc) the doorH6607 of the king’sH4428 house.H1004 [28] And it was [so], whenH1767 the kingH4428 wentH935(QalInf) into the houseH1004 of the Lord,H3068 that the guardH7323(QalPtc) bareH5375(QalImpf) them, and brought them backH7725(HiphPerf) into the guardH7323(QalPtc) chamber.H8372 [29] Now the restH3499 of the actsH1697 of Rehoboam,H7346 and all that he did,H6213(QalPerf) [are] they not writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) in the bookH5612 of the chroniclesH1697 of the kingsH4428 of Judah?H3063 [30] And there was warH4421 between RehoboamH7346 and JeroboamH3379 all [their] days.H3117 [31] And RehoboamH7346 sleptH7901(QalImpf) with his fathers,H1 and was buriedH6912(NiphImpf) with his fathersH1 in the cityH5892 of David.H1732 And his mother’sH517 nameH8034 [was] NaamahH5279 an Ammonitess.H5985 And AbijamH38 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(QalImpf) in his stead.
