[1] He went out from there. He came into his own country, and his disciples followed him. [2] When the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things?” and, “What is the wisdom that is given to this man, that such mighty works come about by his hands? [3] Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judah, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” So they were offended at him. [4] Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house.” [5] He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. [6] He marveled because of their unbelief. He went around the villages teaching. [7] He called to himself the twelve, and began to send them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits. [8] He commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only: no bread, no wallet, no money in their purse, [9] but to wear sandals, and not put on two tunics. [10] He said to them, “Wherever you enter into a house, stay there until you depart from there. [11] Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. Assuredly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!” [12] They went out and preached that people should repent. [13] They cast out many demons, and anointed many with oil who were sick and healed them. [14] King Herod heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, “John the Baptizer has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.” [15] But others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.” [16] But Herod, when he heard this, said, “This is John, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead.” [17] For Herod himself had sent out and arrested John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her. [18] For John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” [19] Herodias set herself against him and desired to kill him, but she couldn’t, [20] for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly. [21] Then a convenient day came when Herod on his birthday made a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. [22] When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” [23] He swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” [24] She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?”She said, “The head of John the Baptizer.” [25] She came in immediately with haste to the king and requested, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.” [26] The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse her. [27] Immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard and commanded to bring John’s head; and he went and beheaded him in the prison, [28] and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother. [29] When his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb. [30] The apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus, and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught. [31] He said to them, “Come away into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. [32] They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. [33] They saw them going, and many recognized him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to him. [34] Jesus came out, saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. [35] When it was late in the day, his disciples came to him and said, “This place is deserted, and it is late in the day. [36] Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat.” [37] But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.”They asked him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?” [38] He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go see.”When they knew, they said, “Five, and two fish.” [39] He commanded them that everyone should sit down in groups on the green grass. [40] They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties. [41] He took the five loaves and the two fish; and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish among them all. [42] They all ate and were filled. [43] They took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and also of the fish. [44] Those who ate the loaves were five thousand men. [45] Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he himself sent the multitude away. [46] After he had taken leave of them, he went up the mountain to pray. [47] When evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land. [48] Seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them, [49] but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; [50] for they all saw him and were troubled. But he immediately spoke with them and said to them, “Cheer up! It is I!§ Don’t be afraid.” [51] He got into the boat with them; and the wind ceased, and they were very amazed among themselves, and marveled; [52] for they hadn’t understood about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. [53] When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. [54] When they had come out of the boat, immediately the people recognized him, [55] and ran around that whole region, and began to bring those who were sick on their mats to where they heard he was. [56] Wherever he entered—into villages, or into cities, or into the country—they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might just touch the fringe§ of his garment; and as many as touched him were made well.

[6] AndG2532 he marvelledG2296(ImpfActInd) becauseG1223 of theirG846 unbelief.G570 AndG2532 he wentG4013(ImpfActInd) round aboutG2945 the villages,G2968 teaching.G1321(PresActPtc) [7] AndG2532 he calledG4341(PresMidPasDepInd) [unto him] the twelve,G1427 andG2532 beganG756(AorMidDepInd) to sendG649 themG846 forthG649(PresActInf) by twoG1417 and two;G1417 andG2532 gaveG1325(ImpfActInd) themG846 power overG1849 uncleanG169 spirits;G4151 [8] AndG2532 commandedG3853(AorActInd) themG846 thatG2443 they should takeG142(PresActSubj) nothingG3367 forG1519 [their] journey,G3598 saveG1508 a staffG4464 only;G3440 noG3361 scrip,G4082 noG3361 bread,G740 noG3361 moneyG5475 inG1519 [their] purse:G2223 [9] ButG235 [be] shodG5265(PerfPasPtc) with sandals;G4547 andG2532 notG3361 put onG1746(AorMidSubj) twoG1417 coats.G5509 [10] AndG2532 he saidG3004(ImpfActInd) unto them,G846 In what place soeverG3699 ye enterG1525(Aor2ActSubj) intoG1519 an house,G3614 thereG1563 abideG3306(PresActImpr) tillG2193 ye departG1831(Aor2ActSubj) from that place.G1564 [11] AndG2532 whosoeverG3745 shallG1209 notG3361 receiveG1209(AorMidDepSubj) you,G5209 norG3366 hearG191(AorActSubj) you,G5216 when ye departG1607(PresMidPasDepPtc) thence,G1564 shake offG1621(AorActImpr) the dustG5522 underG5270 yourG5216 feetG4228 forG1519 a testimonyG3142 against them.G846 VerilyG281 I sayG3004(PresActInd) unto you,G5213 It shall beG2071(FutInd) more tolerableG414 for SodomG4670 andG2228 GomorrhaG1116 inG1722 the dayG2250 of judgment,G2920 thanG2228 for thatG1565 city.G4172 [12] AndG2532 they went out,G1831(Aor2ActPtc) and preachedG2784(ImpfActInd) thatG2443 men should repent.G3340(AorActSubj) [13] AndG2532 they cast outG1544(ImpfActInd) manyG4183 devils,G1140 andG2532 anointedG218(ImpfActInd) with oilG1637 manyG4183 that were sick,G732 andG2532 healedG2323(ImpfActInd) [them]. [14] AndG2532 kingG935 HerodG2264 heardG191(AorActInd) [of him]; (forG1063 hisG846 nameG3686 wasG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) spread abroad:G5318) andG2532 he said,G3004(ImpfActInd) ThatG3754 JohnG2491 the BaptistG907(PresActPtc) was risenG1453(AorPasInd) fromG1537 the dead,G3498 andG2532 thereforeG1223 mighty worksG1411 do shew forth themselvesG1754(PresActInd) inG1722 him.G846 [15] OthersG243 said,G3004(ImpfActInd) ThatG3754 it isG2076(PresInd) Elias.G2243 AndG1161 othersG243 said,G3004(ImpfActInd) ThatG3754 it isG2076(PresInd) a prophet,G4396 orG2228 asG5613 one ofG1520 the prophets.G4396 [16] ButG1161 when HerodG2264 heardG191(AorActPtc) [thereof], he said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) ItG3778 isG2076(PresInd) John,G2491 whomG3754 IG1473 beheaded:G607(AorActInd) heG846 is risenG1453(AorPasInd) fromG1537 the dead.G3498 [17] ForG1063 HerodG2264 himselfG846 had sent forthG649(AorActPtc) and laid holdG2902(AorActInd) upon John,G2491 andG2532 boundG1210(AorActInd) himG846 inG1722 prisonG5438 forG1223 Herodias’G2266 sake,G1223 hisG846 brotherG80 Philip’sG5376 wife:G1135 forG3754 he had marriedG1060(AorActInd) her.G846 [18] ForG1063 JohnG2491 had saidG3004(ImpfActInd) unto Herod,G2264 It isG1832 notG3756 lawfulG1832(PresInd) for theeG4671 to haveG2192(PresActInf) thyG4675 brother’sG80 wife.G1135 [19] ThereforeG1161 HerodiasG2266 had a quarrelG1758(ImpfActInd) against him,G846 andG2532 wouldG2309(ImpfActInd) have killedG615(AorActInf) him;G846 butG2532 she couldG1410(ImpfMidPasDepInd) not:G3756 [20] ForG1063 HerodG2264 fearedG5399(ImpfMidPasDepInd) John,G2491 knowingG1492(PerfActPtc) that heG846 was a justG1342 manG435 andG2532 an holy,G40 andG2532 observedG4933(ImpfActInd) him;G846 andG2532 when he heardG191(AorActPtc) him,G846 he didG4160(ImpfActInd) many things,G4183 andG2532 heardG191(ImpfActInd) himG846 gladly.G2234 [21] AndG2532 when a convenientG2121 dayG2250 was come,G1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) thatG3753 HerodG2264 on hisG846 birthdayG1077 madeG4160(ImpfActInd) a supperG1173 to hisG846 lords,G3175 high captains,G5506 andG2532 chiefG4413 [estates] of Galilee;G1056 [22] AndG2532 when the daughterG2364 of the saidG846 HerodiasG2266 came in,G1525(Aor2ActPtc) andG2532 danced,G3738(AorMidDepPtc) andG2532 pleasedG700(AorActPtc) HerodG2264 andG2532 them that sat with him,G4873(PresMidPasDepPtc) the kingG935 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto the damsel,G2877 AskG154(AorActImpr) of meG3165 whatsoeverG3739 thou wilt,G2309(PresActSubj) andG2532 I will giveG1325(FutActInd) [it] thee.G4671 [23] AndG2532 he swareG3660(AorActInd) unto her,G846 WhatsoeverG3754 thou shalt askG154(AorActSubj) of me,G3165 I will giveG1325(FutActInd) [it] thee,G4671 untoG2193 the halfG2255 of myG3450 kingdom.G932 [24] AndG1161 she went forth,G1831(Aor2ActPtc) and saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto herG846 mother,G3384 WhatG5101 shall I ask?G154(FutMidInd) AndG1161 she said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) The headG2776 of JohnG2491 the Baptist.G910 [25] AndG2532 she came inG1525(Aor2ActPtc) straightwayG2112 withG3326 hasteG4710 untoG4314 the king,G935 and asked,G154(AorMidInd) saying,G3004(PresActPtc) I willG2309(PresActInd) thatG2443 thou giveG1325(Aor2ActSubj) meG3427 by and byG1824 inG1909 a chargerG4094 the headG2776 of JohnG2491 the Baptist.G910 [26] AndG2532 the kingG935 wasG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) exceeding sorry;G4036 [yet] forG1223 his oath’s sake,G3727 andG2532 for their sakes whichG3588 sat with him,G4873(PresMidPasDepPtc) he wouldG2309(AorActInd) notG3756 rejectG114(AorActInf) her.G846 [27] AndG2532 immediatelyG2112 the kingG935 sentG649(AorActPtc) an executioner,G4688 and commandedG2004(AorActInd) hisG846 headG2776 to be brought:G5342(AorPasInf) andG1161 he wentG565(Aor2ActPtc) and beheadedG607(AorActInd) himG846 inG1722 the prison,G5438 [28] AndG2532 broughtG5342(AorActInd) hisG846 headG2776 inG1909 a charger,G4094 andG2532 gaveG1325(AorActInd) itG846 to the damsel:G2877 andG2532 the damselG2877 gaveG1325(AorActInd) itG846 to herG846 mother.G3384 [29] AndG2532 when hisG846 disciplesG3101 heardG191(AorActPtc) [of it], they cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) andG2532 took upG142(AorActInd) hisG846 corpse,G4430 andG2532 laidG5087(AorActInd) itG846 inG1722 a tomb.G3419 [30] AndG2532 the apostlesG652 gathered themselves togetherG4863(PresPasInd) untoG4314 Jesus,G2424 andG2532 toldG518(AorActInd) himG846 all things,G3956 bothG2532 whatG3745 they had done,G4160(AorActInd) andG2532 whatG3745 they had taught.G1321(AorActInd) [31] AndG2532 he saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto them,G846 ComeG1205(Impr) yeG5210 yourselvesG846 apartG2596 intoG1519 a desertG2048 place,G5117 andG2532 restG373(PresMidImpr) a while:G3641 forG1063 there wereG2258(ImpfInd) manyG4183 comingG2064(PresMidPasDepPtc) andG2532 going,G5217(PresActPtc) andG2532 they had noG3761 leisureG2119(ImpfActInd) so much asG3761 to eat.G5315(Aor2ActInf) [32] AndG2532 they departedG565(Aor2ActInd) intoG1519 a desertG2048 placeG5117 by shipG4143 privately.G2596 [33] AndG2532 the peopleG3793 sawG1492(Aor2ActInd) themG846 departing,G5217(PresActPtc) andG2532 manyG4183 knewG1921(Aor2ActInd) him,G846 andG2532 ranG4936(Aor2ActInd) afootG3979 thitherG1563 out ofG575 allG3956 cities,G4172 andG2532 outwentG4281(Aor2ActInd) them,G846 andG2532 came togetherG4905(Aor2ActInd) untoG4314 him.G846 [34] AndG2532 Jesus,G2424 when he came out,G1831(Aor2ActPtc) sawG1492(Aor2ActInd) muchG4183 people,G3793 andG2532 was moved with compassionG4697(AorPasDepInd) towardG1909 them,G846 becauseG3754 they wereG2258(ImpfInd) asG5613 sheepG4263 notG3361 havingG2192(PresActPtc) a shepherd:G4166 andG2532 he beganG756(AorMidDepInd) to teachG1321(PresActInf) themG846 many things.G4183 [35] AndG2532 when the dayG5610 wasG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) nowG2235 far spent,G4183 hisG846 disciplesG3101 cameG4334(Aor2ActPtc) unto him,G846 and said,G3004(PresActInd) This isG2076(PresInd) a desertG2048 place,G5117 andG2532 nowG2235 the timeG5610 [is] far passed:G4183 [36] SendG630 themG846 away,G630(AorActImpr) thatG2443 they may goG565(Aor2ActPtc) intoG1519 the countryG68 round about,G2945 andG2532 into the villages,G2968 and buyG59(AorActSubj) themselvesG1438 bread:G740 forG1063 they haveG2192(PresActInd) nothingG5101 to eat.G5315(Aor2ActSubj) [37] He answeredG611(AorPasDepPtc) andG1161 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto them,G846 GiveG1325(Aor2ActImpr) yeG5210 themG846 to eat.G5315(Aor2ActInf) AndG2532 they sayG3004(PresActInd) unto him,G846 Shall we goG565(Aor2ActPtc) and buyG59(AorActSubj) two hundredG1250 pennyworthG1220 of bread,G740 andG2532 giveG1325(Aor2ActSubj) themG846 to eat?G5315(Aor2ActInf) [38] He saithG3004(PresActInd) unto them,G846 How manyG4214 loavesG740 have ye?G2192(PresActInd) goG5217(PresActImpr) andG2532 see.G1492(Aor2ActImpr) AndG2532 when they knew,G1097(Aor2ActPtc) they say,G3004(PresActInd) Five,G4002 andG2532 twoG1417 fishes.G2486 [39] AndG2532 he commandedG2004(AorActInd) themG846 to makeG347 allG3956 sit downG347(AorActInf) by companiesG4849 uponG1909 the greenG5515 grass.G5528 [40] AndG2532 they sat downG377(Aor2ActInd) in ranks,G4237 byG303 hundreds,G1540 andG2532 byG303 fifties.G4004 [41] AndG2532 when he had takenG2983(Aor2ActPtc) the fiveG4002 loavesG740 andG2532 the twoG1417 fishes,G2486 he looked upG308(AorActPtc) toG1519 heaven,G3772 and blessed,G2127(AorActInd) andG2532 brakeG2622(AorActInd) the loaves,G740 andG2532 gaveG1325(ImpfActInd) [them] to hisG846 disciplesG3101 toG2443 set beforeG3908(Aor2ActSubj) them;G846 andG2532 the twoG1417 fishesG2486 divided heG3307(AorActInd) among them all.G3956 [42] AndG2532 they didG5315 allG3956 eat,G5315(Aor2ActInd) andG2532 were filled.G5526(AorPasInd) [43] AndG2532 they took upG142(AorActInd) twelveG1427 basketsG2894 fullG4134 of the fragments,G2801 andG2532 ofG575 the fishes.G2486 [44] AndG2532 they that did eatG5315(Aor2ActPtc) of the loavesG740 wereG2258(ImpfInd) aboutG5616 five thousandG4000
