[1] When Balaam saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel, he didn’t go, as at the other times, to use divination, but he set his face toward the wilderness. [2] Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came on him. [3] He took up his parable, and said,
“Balaam the son of Beor says,
the man whose eyes are open says;
[4] he says, who hears the words of God,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
falling down, and having his eyes open:
[5] How goodly are your tents, Jacob,
and your dwellings, Israel!
[6] As valleys they are spread out,
as gardens by the riverside,
as aloes which Yahweh has planted,
as cedar trees beside the waters.
[7] Water shall flow from his buckets.
His seed shall be in many waters.
His king shall be higher than Agag.
His kingdom shall be exalted.
[8] God brings him out of Egypt.
He has as it were the strength of the wild ox.
He shall consume the nations his adversaries,
shall break their bones in pieces,
and pierce them with his arrows.
[9] He couched, he lay down as a lion,
as a lioness;
who shall rouse him up?
Everyone who blesses you is blessed.
Everyone who curses you is cursed.”
[10] Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times. [11] Therefore, flee to your place, now! I thought to promote you to great honor; but, behold, Yahweh has kept you back from honor.” [12] Balaam said to Balak, “Didn’t I also tell your messengers whom you sent to me, saying, [13] ‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can’t go beyond Yahweh’s word, to do either good or bad from my own mind. I will say what Yahweh says’? [14] Now, behold, I go to my people. Come, I will inform you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.” [15] He took up his parable, and said,
“Balaam the son of Beor says,
the man whose eyes are open says;
[16] he says, who hears the words of God,
knows the knowledge of the Most High,
and who sees the vision of the Almighty,
falling down, and having his eyes open:
[17] I see him, but not now.
I see him, but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob.
A scepter will rise out of Israel,
and shall strike through the corners of Moab,
and crush all the sons of Sheth.
[18] Edom shall be a possession.
Seir, his enemy, also shall be a possession,
while Israel does valiantly.
[19] Out of Jacob shall one have dominion,
and shall destroy the remnant from the city.”
[20] He looked at Amalek, and took up his parable, and said,
“Amalek was the first of the nations,
but his latter end shall come to destruction.”
[21] He looked at the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said,
“Your dwelling place is strong.
Your nest is set in the rock.
[22] Nevertheless Kain shall be wasted,
until Asshur carries you away captive.”
[23] He took up his parable, and said,
“Alas, who shall live when God does this?
[24] But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim.
They shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber.
He also shall come to destruction.”
[25] Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.
King James Version
[1] And when Balaam H1109 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that it pleased H5869 the Lord H3068 to bless H1288 (PielInf) Israel, H3478 he went H1980 (QalPerf) not, as at other times, H6471 to seek H7125 (QalInf) for enchantments, H5173§ but he set H7896 (QalImpf) his face H6440 toward the wilderness. H4057 [2] And Balaam H1109 lifted up H5375 (QalImpf) his eyes, H5869 and he saw H7200 (QalImpf) Israel H3478 abiding H7931 (QalActPtc) in his tents according to their tribes; H7626 and the spirit H7307 of God H430 came upon him. [3] And he took up H5375 (QalImpf) his parable, H4912 and said, H559 (QalImpf)
Balaam H1109 the son H1121 of Beor H1160 hath said, H5002 (QalPasPtc)
And the man H1397 whose eyes H5869 are open H8365 (QalPasPtc)§ hath said: H5002 (QalPasPtc)
[4] He hath said, H5002 (QalPasPtc) which heard H8085 (QalActPtc) the words H561 of God, H410
Which saw H2372 (QalImpf) the vision H4236 of the Almighty, H7706
Falling H5307 (QalActPtc) into a trance, but having his eyes H5869 open: H1540 (QalPasPtc)
[5] How goodly H2895 (QalPerf) are thy tents, H168 O Jacob, H3290
And thy tabernacles, H4908 O Israel! H3478
[6] As the valleys H5158 are they spread forth, H5186 (NiphPerf)
As gardens H1593 by the river’s side, H5104
As the trees of lign aloes H174 which the Lord H3068 hath planted, H5193 (QalPerf)
And as cedar trees H730 beside the waters. H4325
[7] He shall pour H5140 the water H4325 out H5140 (QalImpf) of his buckets, H1805
And his seed H2233 shall be in many H7227 waters, H4325
And his king H4428 shall be higher H7311 (QalImpf) than Agag, H90
And his kingdom H4438 shall be exalted. H5375 (HithImpf)
[8] God H410 brought him forth H3318 (HiphPtc) out of Egypt; H4714
He hath as it were the strength H8443 of an unicorn: H7214
He shall eat up H398 (QalImpf) the nations H1471 his enemies, H6862
And shall break H1633 (PielImpf) their bones, H6106
And pierce H4272 (QalImpf) them through with his arrows. H2671
[9] He couched, H3766 (QalPerf) he lay down H7901 (QalPerf) as a lion, H738
And as a great lion: H3833 who shall stir him up? H6965 (HiphImpf)
Blessed H1288 (QalPasPtc) is he that blesseth H1288 (PielPtc) thee,
And cursed H779 (QalPasPtc)
is he that curseth H779 (QalActPtc) thee.
[10] And Balak’s H1111 anger H639 was kindled H2734 (QalImpf) against Balaam, H1109 and he smote H5606 his hands H3709 together: H5606 (QalImpf) and Balak H1111 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Balaam, H1109 I called H7121 (QalPerf) thee to curse H6895 (QalInf) mine enemies, H341 (QalActPtc) and, behold, thou hast altogether H1288 (PielInf) blessed H1288 (PielPerf) them these three H7969 times. H6471 [11] Therefore now flee H1272 (QalImpv) thou to thy place: H4725 I thought H559 (QalPerf) to promote H3513 thee unto great H3513 (PielInf) honour; H3513 (PielImpf) but, lo, the Lord H3068 hath kept thee back H4513 (QalPerf) from honour. H3519 [12] And Balaam H1109 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Balak, H1111 Spake H1696 (PielPerf) I not also to thy messengers H4397 which thou sentest H7971 (QalPerf) unto me, saying, H559 (QalInf) [13] If Balak H1111 would give H5414 (QalImpf) me his house H1004 full H4393 of silver H3701 and gold, H2091 I cannot H3201 (QalImpf) go beyond H5674 (QalInf) the commandment H6310 of the Lord, H3068 to do H6213 (QalInf) either good H2896 or bad H7451 of mine own mind; H3820 but what the Lord H3068 saith, H1696 (PielImpf) that will I speak? H1696 (PielImpf) [14] And now, behold, I go H1980 (QalActPtc) unto my people: H5971 come H3212 (QalImpv) therefore, and I will advertise H3289 (QalImpf) thee what this people H5971 shall do H6213 (QalImpf) to thy people H5971 in the latter H319 days. H3117 [15] And he took up H5375 (QalImpf) his parable, H4912 and said, H559 (QalImpf)
Balaam H1109 the son H1121 of Beor H1160 hath said, H5002 (QalPasPtc)
And the man H1397 whose eyes H5869 are open H8365 (QalPasPtc) hath said: H5002 (QalPasPtc)
[16] He hath said, H5002 (QalPasPtc) which heard H8085 (QalActPtc) the words H561 of God, H410
And knew H3045 (QalActPtc) the knowledge H1847 of the Most High, H5945
Which saw H2372 (QalImpf) the vision H4236 of the Almighty, H7706
Falling H5307 (QalActPtc) into a trance, but having his eyes H5869 open: H1540 (QalPasPtc)
[17] I shall see H7200 (QalImpf) him, but not now:
I shall behold H7789 (QalImpf)
him, but not nigh: H7138
There shall come H1869 (QalPerf) a Star H3556 out of Jacob, H3290
And a Sceptre H7626 shall rise H6965 (QalPerf) out of Israel, H3478
And shall smite H4272 (QalPerf) the corners H6285 of Moab, H4124§
And destroy H6979 (PilpPerf) all the children H1121 of Sheth. H8352 (Ketiv)
[18] And Edom H123 shall be a possession, H3424
Seir H8165 also shall be a possession H3424 for his enemies; H341 (QalActPtc)
And Israel H3478 shall do H6213 (QalActPtc) valiantly. H2428
[19] Out of Jacob H3290 shall come he that shall have dominion, H7287 (QalImpf)
And shall destroy H6 (HiphPerf) him that remaineth H8300 of the city. H5892
[20] And when he looked H7200 (QalImpf) on Amalek, H6002 he took up H5375 (QalImpf) his parable, H4912 and said, H559 (QalImpf)
Amalek H6002 was the first H7225 of the nations; H1471
But his latter H319 end shall be that he perish H8 for ever. H5703
[21] And he looked H7200 (QalImpf) on the Kenites, H7017 and took up H5375 (QalImpf) his parable, H4912 and said, H559 (QalImpf)
Strong H386 is thy dwellingplace, H4186
And thou puttest H7760 (QalImpv) thy nest H7064 in a rock. H5553
[22] Nevertheless the Kenite H7014§ shall H518 be wasted, H1197 (PielInf)
Until Asshur H804 shall carry thee away captive. H7617 (QalImpf)
[23] And he took up H5375 (QalImpf) his parable, H4912 and said, H559 (QalImpf)
Alas, H188 who shall live H2421 (QalImpf) when God H410 doeth H7760 (QalInf) this!
[24] And ships H6716 shall come from the coast H3027 of Chittim, H3794
And shall afflict H6031 (PielPerf) Asshur, H804 and shall afflict H6031 (PielPerf) Eber, H5677
And he also shall perish H8 for ever. H5703
[25] And Balaam H1109 rose up, H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) and returned H7725 (QalImpf) to his place: H4725 and Balak H1111 also went H1980 (QalPerf) his way. H1870
