[1] When Balaam saw that it pleased Yahweh to bless Israel, he didn’t go, as at the other times, to use divination, but he set his face toward the wilderness. [2] Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came on him. [3] He took up his parable, and said,
“Balaam the son of Beor says,
the man whose eyes are open says;
[4] he says, who hears the words of God,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
falling down, and having his eyes open:
[5] How goodly are your tents, Jacob,
and your dwellings, Israel!
[6] As valleys they are spread out,
as gardens by the riverside,
as aloes which Yahweh has planted,
as cedar trees beside the waters.
[7] Water shall flow from his buckets.
His seed shall be in many waters.
His king shall be higher than Agag.
His kingdom shall be exalted.
[8] God brings him out of Egypt.
He has as it were the strength of the wild ox.
He shall consume the nations his adversaries,
shall break their bones in pieces,
and pierce them with his arrows.
[9] He couched, he lay down as a lion,
as a lioness;
who shall rouse him up?
Everyone who blesses you is blessed.
Everyone who curses you is cursed.” [10] Balak’s anger burned against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times. [11] Therefore, flee to your place, now! I thought to promote you to great honor; but, behold, Yahweh has kept you back from honor.” [12] Balaam said to Balak, “Didn’t I also tell your messengers whom you sent to me, saying, [13] ‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can’t go beyond Yahweh’s word, to do either good or bad from my own mind. I will say what Yahweh says’? [14] Now, behold, I go to my people. Come, I will inform you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.” [15] He took up his parable, and said,
“Balaam the son of Beor says,
the man whose eyes are open says;
[16] he says, who hears the words of God,
knows the knowledge of the Most High,
and who sees the vision of the Almighty,
falling down, and having his eyes open:
[17] I see him, but not now.
I see him, but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob.
A scepter will rise out of Israel,
and shall strike through the corners of Moab,
and crush all the sons of Sheth.
[18] Edom shall be a possession.
Seir, his enemy, also shall be a possession,
while Israel does valiantly.
[19] Out of Jacob shall one have dominion,
and shall destroy the remnant from the city.” [20] He looked at Amalek, and took up his parable, and said,
“Amalek was the first of the nations,
but his latter end shall come to destruction.” [21] He looked at the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said,
“Your dwelling place is strong.
Your nest is set in the rock.
[22] Nevertheless Kain shall be wasted,
until Asshur carries you away captive.” [23] He took up his parable, and said,
“Alas, who shall live when God does this?
[24] But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim.
They shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber.
He also shall come to destruction.” [25] Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.

[10] And Balak’sH1111 angerH639 was kindledH2734(QalImpf) against Balaam,H1109 and he smoteH5606 his handsH3709 together:H5606(QalImpf) and BalakH1111 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Balaam,H1109 I calledH7121(QalPerf) thee to curseH6895(QalInf) mine enemies,H341(QalActPtc) and, behold, thou hast altogetherH1288(PielInf) blessedH1288(PielPerf) [them] these threeH7969 times.H6471 [11] Therefore now fleeH1272(QalImpv) thou to thy place:H4725 I thoughtH559(QalPerf) to promoteH3513 thee unto greatH3513(PielInf) honour;H3513(PielImpf) but, lo, the LordH3068 hath kept thee backH4513(QalPerf) from honour.H3519 [12] And BalaamH1109 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Balak,H1111 SpakeH1696(PielPerf) I not also to thy messengersH4397 which thou sentestH7971(QalPerf) unto me, saying,H559(QalInf) [13] If BalakH1111 would giveH5414(QalImpf) me his houseH1004 fullH4393 of silverH3701 and gold,H2091 I cannotH3201(QalImpf) go beyondH5674(QalInf) the commandmentH6310 of the Lord,H3068 to doH6213(QalInf) [either] goodH2896 or badH7451 of mine own mind;H3820 [but] what the LordH3068 saith,H1696(PielImpf) that will I speak?H1696(PielImpf) [14] And now, behold, I goH1980(QalActPtc) unto my people:H5971 comeH3212(QalImpv) [therefore, and] I will advertiseH3289(QalImpf) thee what this peopleH5971 shall doH6213(QalImpf) to thy peopleH5971 in the latterH319 days.H3117 [15] And he took upH5375(QalImpf) his parable,H4912 and said,H559(QalImpf) BalaamH1109 the sonH1121 of BeorH1160 hath said,H5002(QalPasPtc) and the manH1397 whose eyesH5869 are openH8365(QalPasPtc) hath said:H5002(QalPasPtc) [16] He hath said,H5002(QalPasPtc) which heardH8085(QalActPtc) the wordsH561 of God,H410 and knewH3045(QalActPtc) the knowledgeH1847 of the most High,H5945 [which] sawH2372(QalImpf) the visionH4236 of the Almighty,H7706 fallingH5307(QalActPtc) [into a trance], but having his eyesH5869 open:H1540(QalPasPtc) [17] I shall seeH7200(QalImpf) him, but not now: I shall beholdH7789(QalImpf) him, but not nigh:H7138 there shall comeH1869(QalPerf) a StarH3556 out of Jacob,H3290 and a SceptreH7626 shall riseH6965(QalPerf) out of Israel,H3478 and shall smiteH4272(QalPerf) the cornersH6285 of Moab,H4124 and destroyH6979(PilpPerf) all the childrenH1121 of Sheth.H8352(Ketiv) [18] And EdomH123 shall be a possession,H3424 SeirH8165 also shall be a possessionH3424 for his enemies;H341(QalActPtc) and IsraelH3478 shall doH6213(QalActPtc) valiantly.H2428 [19] Out of JacobH3290 shall come he that shall have dominion,H7287(QalImpf) and shall destroyH6(HiphPerf) him that remainethH8300 of the city.H5892 [20] And when he lookedH7200(QalImpf) on Amalek,H6002 he took upH5375(QalImpf) his parable,H4912 and said,H559(QalImpf) AmalekH6002 [was] the firstH7225 of the nations;H1471 but his latterH319 end [shall be] that he perishH8 for ever.H5703 [21] And he lookedH7200(QalImpf) on the Kenites,H7017 and took upH5375(QalImpf) his parable,H4912 and said,H559(QalImpf) StrongH386 is thy dwellingplace,H4186 and thou puttestH7760(QalImpv) thy nestH7064 in a rock.H5553 [22] Nevertheless the KeniteH7014 shallH518 be wasted,H1197(PielInf) until AsshurH804 shall carry thee away captive.H7617(QalImpf) [23] And he took upH5375(QalImpf) his parable,H4912 and said,H559(QalImpf) Alas,H188 who shall liveH2421(QalImpf) when GodH410 doethH7760(QalInf) this!
