[1] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [2] “Speak to Aaron, and tell him, ‘When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lamp stand.’ ” [3] Aaron did so. He lit its lamps to light the area in front of the lamp stand, as Yahweh commanded Moses. [4] This was the workmanship of the lamp stand, beaten work of gold. From its base to its flowers, it was beaten work. He made the lamp stand according to the pattern which Yahweh had shown Moses. [5] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [6] “Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. [7] You shall do this to them to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of cleansing on them, let them shave their whole bodies with a razor, let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves. [8] Then let them take a young bull and its meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and another young bull you shall take for a sin offering. [9] You shall present the Levites before the Tent of Meeting. You shall assemble the whole congregation of the children of Israel. [10] You shall present the Levites before Yahweh. The children of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites, [11] and Aaron shall offer the Levites before Yahweh for a wave offering on the behalf of the children of Israel, that it may be theirs to do the service of Yahweh. [12] “The Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and you shall offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering to Yahweh, to make atonement for the Levites. [13] You shall set the Levites before Aaron and before his sons, and offer them as a wave offering to Yahweh. [14] Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine. [15] “After that, the Levites shall go in to do the service of the Tent of Meeting. You shall cleanse them, and offer them as a wave offering. [16] For they are wholly given to me from among the children of Israel; instead of all who open the womb, even the firstborn of all the children of Israel, I have taken them to me. [17] For all the firstborn among the children of Israel are mine, both man and animal. On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them for myself. [18] I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel. [19] I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the Tent of Meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel, so that there will be no plague among the children of Israel when the children of Israel come near to the sanctuary.” [20] Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel did so to the Levites. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the children of Israel did to them. [21] The Levites purified themselves from sin, and they washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them for a wave offering before Yahweh and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them. [22] After that, the Levites went in to do their service in the Tent of Meeting before Aaron and before his sons: as Yahweh had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them. [23] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, [24] “This is what is assigned to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward they shall go in to wait on the service in the work of the Tent of Meeting; [25] and from the age of fifty years they shall retire from doing the work, and shall serve no more, [26] but shall assist their brothers in the Tent of Meeting, to perform the duty, and shall perform no service. This is how you shall have the Levites do their duties.”

Service of Priests and Levites

The Levites

[5] And the Lord H3068 spake H1696 (PielImpf) unto Moses, H4872 saying, H559 (QalInf) [6] Take H3947 (QalImpv) the Levites H3881 from among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 and cleanse H2891 (PielPerf) them. [7] And thus shalt thou do H6213 (QalImpf) unto them, to cleanse H2891 (PielInf) them: Sprinkle H5137 (HiphImpv) water H4325 of purifying H2403 upon them, and let them shave H8593§ all their flesh, H1320 and let them wash H3526 (PielPerf) their clothes, H899 and so make themselves clean. H2891 (HithPerf) [8] Then let them take H3947 (QalPerf) a young H1121 bullock H6499 with his meat offering, H4503 even fine flour H5560 mingled H1101 (QalPasPtc) with oil, H8081 and another H8145 young H1121 bullock H6499 shalt thou take H3947 (QalImpf) for a sin offering. Their Service

[14] Thus shalt thou separate H914 (HiphPerf) the Levites H3881 from among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel: H3478 and the Levites H3881 shall be mine. [15] And after H310 that shall the Levites H3881 go in H935 (QalImpf) to do the service H5647 (QalInf) of the tabernacle H168 of the congregation: H4150 and thou shalt cleanse H2891 (PielPerf) them, and offer H5130 (HiphPerf) them for an offering. H8573 [16] For they are wholly given H5414 (QalPasPtc) unto me from among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel; H3478 instead of such as open H6363 every womb, H7358 even instead of the firstborn H1060 of all the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 have I taken H3947 (QalPerf) them unto me. [17] For all the firstborn H1060 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 are mine, both man H120 and beast: H929 on the day H3117 that I smote H5221 (HiphInf) every firstborn H1060 in the land H776 of Egypt H4714 I sanctified H6942 (HiphPerf) them for myself. [18] And I have taken H3947 (QalImpf) the Levites H3881 for all the firstborn H1060 of the children H1121 of Israel. H3478 [19] And I have given H5414 (QalImpf) the Levites H3881 as a gift§ H5414 (QalPasPtc) to Aaron H175 and to his sons H1121 from among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 to do H5647 (QalInf) the service H5656 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 in the tabernacle H168 of the congregation, H4150 and to make an atonement H3722 (PielInf) for the children H1121 of Israel: H3478 that there be no plague H5063 among the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 when the children H1121 of Israel H3478 come nigh H5066 (QalInf) unto the sanctuary. Their Consecration

[20] And Moses, H4872 and Aaron, H175 and all the congregation H5712 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 did H6213 (QalImpf) to the Levites H3881 according unto all that the Lord H3068 commanded H6680 (PielPerf) Moses H4872 concerning the Levites, H3881 so did H6213 (QalPerf) the children H1121 of Israel H3478 unto them. [21] And the Levites H3881 were purified, H2398 (HithImpf) and they washed H3526 (PielImpf) their clothes; H899 and Aaron H175 offered H5130 (HiphImpf) them as an offering H8573 before H6440 the Lord; H3068 and Aaron H175 made an atonement H3722 (PielImpf) for them to cleanse H2891 (PielInf) them. [22] And after H310 that went H935 (QalPerf) the Levites H3881 in to do H5647 (QalInf) their service H5656 in the tabernacle H168 of the congregation H4150 before H6440 Aaron, H175 and before H6440 his sons: H1121 as the Lord H3068 had commanded H6680 (PielPerf) Moses H4872 concerning the Levites, H3881 so did H6213 (QalPerf) they unto them.

Period of Service

[23] And the Lord H3068 spake H1696 (PielImpf) unto Moses, H4872 saying, H559 (QalInf) [24] This is it that belongeth unto the Levites: H3881 from twenty H6242 and five H2568 years H8141 old H1121 and upward H4605 they shall go in H935 (QalImpf) to wait H6633 (QalInf) upon the service H5656 of the tabernacle H168 of the congregation: H4150 [25] and from the age H1121 of fifty H2572 years H8141 they shall cease H7725 (QalImpf) waiting H6635 upon the service H5656§ thereof, and shall serve H5647 (QalImpf) no more: [26] but shall minister H8334 (PielPerf) with their brethren H251 in the tabernacle H168 of the congregation, H4150 to keep H8104 (QalInf) the charge, H4931 and shall do H5647 (QalImpf) no service. H5656 Thus shalt thou do H6213 (QalImpf) unto the Levites H3881 touching their charge. H4931
