‘Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great and difficult things, which you don’t know.’

In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell safely. This is the name by which she will be called: Yahweh our righteousness.”

The word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them,

[This is] the word H1697 that came unto Jeremiah H3414 from the Lord, H3068 after H310 that the king H4428 Zedekiah H6667 had made H3772 (QalInf) a covenant H1285 with all the people H5971 which [were] at Jerusalem, H3389 to proclaim H7121 (QalInf) liberty H1865 unto them;

You had now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor. You had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name;

^[41:15] και επεστρεψαν σημερον ποιησαι το ευθες προ οφθαλμων μου του καλεσαι αφεσιν εκαστον του πλησιον αυτου και συνετελεσαν διαθηκην κατα προσωπον μου εν τω οικω ου επεκληθη το ονομα μου επ αυτω

Therefore Yahweh says: “You have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim to you a liberty,” says Yahweh, “to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine. I will make you be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth.

^[41:17] δια τουτο ουτως ειπεν κυριος υμεις ουκ ηκουσατε μου του καλεσαι αφεσιν εκαστος προς τον πλησιον αυτου ιδου εγω καλω αφεσιν υμιν εις μαχαιραν και εις τον θανατον και εις τον λιμον και δωσω υμας εις διασποραν πασαις ταις βασιλειαις της γης

“Therefore Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will bring on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them, but they have not heard; and I have called to them, but they have not answered.’ ”

Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all Yahweh’s words, which he had spoken to him, on a scroll of a book.

Therefore you go, and read from the scroll which you have written from my mouth, Yahweh’s words, in the ears of the people in Yahweh’s house on the fast day. Also you shall read them in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities.

Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book Yahweh’s words in Yahweh’s house.

Now in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast before Yahweh.

Then Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the book in Yahweh’s house, in the room of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of Yahweh’s house, in the ears of all the people.

^[43:10] και ανεγινωσκε βαρουχ εν τω βιβλιω τους λογους ιερεμιου εν οικω κυριου εν οικω γαμαριου υιου σαφαν του γραμματεως εν τη αυλη τη επανω εν προθυροις πυλης του οικου κυριου της καινης εν ωσι παντος του λαου

Then Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.

^[43:13] και ανηγγειλεν αυτοις μιχαιας παντας τους λογους ους ηκουσεν αναγινωσκοντος του βαρουχ εις τα ωτα του λαου

Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll in which you have read in the ears of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand, and came to them.

^[43:14] και απεστειλαν παντες οι αρχοντες προς βαρουχ υιον νηριου τον ιουδιν υιον ναθανιου υιου σελεμιου υιου χουσι λεγοντες το χαρτιον εν ω συ αναγινωσκεις εν αυτω εν ωσι του λαου λαβε αυτο εις την χειρα σου και ηκε και ελαβεν βαρουχ το χαρτιον και κατεβη προς αυτους

They said to him, “Sit down now, and read it in our hearing.” So Baruch read it in their hearing.

And they said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Sit down H3427 (QalImpv) now, and read H7121 (QalImpv) it in our ears. H241 So Baruch H1263 read H7121 (QalImpf) [it] in their ears. H241

^[43:15] και ειπαν αυτω παλιν αναγνωθι εις τα ωτα ημων και ανεγνω βαρουχ

Then Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.”

Then Baruch H1263 answered H559 (QalImpf) them, He pronounced H7121 (QalImpf) all these words H1697 unto me with his mouth, H6310 and I wrote H3789 (QalActPtc) [them] with ink H1773 in the book. H5612

^[43:18] και ειπεν βαρουχ απο στοματος αυτου ανηγγειλεν μοι ιερεμιας παντας τους λογους τουτους και εγραφον εν βιβλιω

So the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the room of Elishama the scribe. Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king, and in the hearing of all the princes who stood beside the king.

So the king H4428 sent H7971 (QalImpf) Jehudi H3065 to fetch H3947 (QalInf) the roll: H4039 and he took H3947 (QalImpf) it out of Elishama H476 the scribe’s H5608 (QalActPtc) chamber. H3957 And Jehudi H3065 read H7121 (QalImpf) it in the ears H241 of the king, H4428 and in the ears H241 of all the princes H8269 which stood H5975 (QalActPtc) beside H5921 the king. H4428

^[43:21] και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς τον ιουδιν λαβειν το χαρτιον και ελαβεν αυτο εξ οικου ελισαμα και ανεγνω ιουδιν εις τα ωτα του βασιλεως και εις τα ωτα παντων των αρχοντων των εστηκοτων περι τον βασιλεα

When Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.

And it came to pass, [that] when Jehudi H3065 had read H7121 (QalInf) three H7969 or four H702 leaves, H1817 he cut H7167 (QalImpf) it with the penknife, H8593 H5608 (QalActPtc) and cast H7993 (HiphInf) [it] into the fire H784 that [was] on the hearth, H254 until all the roll H4039 was consumed H8552 (QalInf) in the fire H784 that [was] on the hearth. ^[43:23] και εγενηθη αναγινωσκοντος ιουδιν τρεις σελιδας και τεσσαρας απετεμνεν αυτας τω ξυρω του γραμματεως και ερριπτεν εις το πυρ το επι της εσχαρας εως εξελιπεν πας ο χαρτης εις το πυρ το επι της εσχαρας

Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,

“Therefore hear Yahweh’s word, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: ‘Behold, I have sworn by my great name,’ says Yahweh, ‘that my name will no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “As the Lord Yahweh lives.”

They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he has let the appointed time pass by.’

Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words,

^[28:61] και ειπεν ιερεμιας προς σαραιαν οταν ελθης εις βαβυλωνα και οψη και αναγνωση παντας τους λογους τουτους

It will be, when you have finished reading this book, that you shall bind a stone to it, and cast it into the middle of the Euphrates.

^[28:63] και εσται οταν παυση του αναγινωσκειν το βιβλιον τουτο και επιδησεις επ αυτο λιθον και ριψεις αυτο εις μεσον του ευφρατου

“The Lord has set at nothing all my mighty men within me. He has called a solemn assembly against me to crush my young men. The Lord has trodden the virgin daughter of Judah as in a wine press.

εξηρεν παντας τους ισχυρους μου ο κυριος εκ μεσου μου εκαλεσεν επ εμε καιρον του συντριψαι εκλεκτους μου ληνον επατησεν κυριος παρθενω θυγατρι ιουδα επι τουτοις εγω κλαιω

“I called for my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders gave up the spirit in the city, while they sought food for themselves to refresh their souls.

εκαλεσα τους εραστας μου αυτοι δε παρελογισαντο με οι ιερεις μου και οι πρεσβυτεροι μου εν τη πολει εξελιπον οτι εζητησαν βρωσιν αυτοις ινα επιστρεψωσιν ψυχας αυτων και ουχ ευρον

“They have heard that I sigh. There is no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble. They are glad that you have done it. You will bring the day that you have proclaimed, and they will be like me.

ακουσατε δη οτι στεναζω εγω ουκ εστιν ο παρακαλων με παντες οι εχθροι μου ηκουσαν τα κακα μου και εχαρησαν οτι συ εποιησας επηγαγες ημεραν εκαλεσας καιρον και εγενοντο ομοιοι εμοι

“You have called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, my terrors on every side. There was no one that escaped or remained in the day of Yahweh’s anger. My enemy has consumed those whom I have cared for and brought up.

Thou hast called H7121 (QalImpf) as in a solemn H4150 day H3117 my terrors H4032 round about, H5439 so that in the day H3117 of the Lord’s H3068 anger H639 none escaped H6412 nor remained: H8300 those that I have swaddled H2946 (PielPerf) and brought up H7235 (PielPerf) hath mine enemy H341 (QalActPtc) consumed. I called on your name, Yahweh, out of the lowest dungeon.

You came near in the day that I called on you. You said, “Don’t be afraid.”

εις την βοηθειαν μου ηγγισας εν η σε ημερα επεκαλεσαμην ειπας μοι μη φοβου

“Go away!” they cried to them. “Unclean! Go away! Go away! Don’t touch! When they fled away and wandered, men said among the nations, “They can’t live here any more.”

Therefore I will also deal in wrath. My eye won’t spare, neither will I have pity. Though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.”

και εγω ποιησω αυτοις μετα θυμου ου φεισεται ο οφθαλμος μου ουδε μη ελεησω

Then he cried in my ears with a loud voice, saying, “Cause those who are in charge of the city to draw near, each man with his destroying weapon in his hand.”

The glory of the God of Israel went up from the cherub, whereupon it was, to the threshold of the house; and he called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn by his side.
