In every province and in every city, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness, joy, a feast and a holiday. Many from among the peoples of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

κατα πολιν και χωραν ου αν εξετεθη το προσταγμα ου αν εξετεθη το εκθεμα χαρα και ευφροσυνη τοις ιουδαιοις κωθων και ευφροσυνη και πολλοι των εθνων περιετεμοντο και ιουδαιζον δια τον φοβον των ιουδαιων

King Ahasuerus laid a tribute on the land and on the islands of the sea.

εγραψεν δε ο βασιλευς τελη επι την βασιλειαν της τε γης και της θαλασσης

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God,^§ and turned away from evil.

Job 1:1 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

ανθρωπος τις ην εν χωρα τη αυσιτιδι ω ονομα ιωβ και ην ο ανθρωπος εκεινος αληθινος αμεμπτος δικαιος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος πονηρου πραγματος

Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

και ειπεν ο κυριος τω διαβολω ποθεν παραγεγονας και αποκριθεις ο διαβολος τω κυριω ειπεν περιελθων την γην και εμπεριπατησας την υπ ουρανον παρειμι

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”

Job 1:8 Heb. hast thou set thy heart on

και ειπεν αυτω ο κυριος προσεσχες τη διανοια σου κατα του παιδος μου ιωβ οτι ουκ εστιν κατ αυτον των επι της γης ανθρωπος αμεμπτος αληθινος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος πονηρου πραγματος

Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

ου συ περιεφραξας τα εξω αυτου και τα εσω της οικιας αυτου και τα εξω παντων των οντων αυτω κυκλω τα εργα των χειρων αυτου ευλογησας και τα κτηνη αυτου πολλα εποιησας επι της γης

Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou H7760 (QalPerf) considered H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that there is none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? Job 2:3 Heb. to swallow him up

ειπεν δε ο κυριος προς τον διαβολον προσεσχες ουν τω θεραποντι μου ιωβ οτι ουκ εστιν κατ αυτον των επι της γης ανθρωπος ακακος αληθινος αμεμπτος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος κακου ετι δε εχεται ακακιας συ δε ειπας τα υπαρχοντα αυτου δια κενης απολεσαι

So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.

You will laugh at destruction and famine, neither will you be afraid of the animals of the earth.

ποτερον ουχι πειρατηριον εστιν ο βιος ανθρωπου επι της γης και ωσπερ μισθιου αυθημερινου η ζωη αυτου

(For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow.)

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of its judges. If not he, then who is it?
