Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun than to eat, to drink, and to be joyful: for that will accompany him in his labor all the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

και επηνεσα εγω συν την ευφροσυνην οτι ουκ εστιν αγαθον τω ανθρωπω υπο τον ηλιον οτι ει μη του φαγειν και του πιειν και του ευφρανθηναι και αυτο συμπροσεσται αυτω εν μοχθω αυτου ημερας ζωης αυτου οσας εδωκεν αυτω ο θεος υπο τον ηλιον

then I saw all the work of God, that man can’t find out the work that is done under the sun, because however much a man labors to seek it out, yet he won’t find it. Yes even though a wise man thinks he can comprehend it, he won’t be able to find it.

και ειδον συν παντα τα ποιηματα του θεου οτι ου δυνησεται ανθρωπος του ευρειν συν το ποιημα το πεποιημενον υπο τον ηλιον οσα αν μοχθηση ο ανθρωπος του ζητησαι και ουχ ευρησει και γε οσα αν ειπη ο σοφος του γνωναι ου δυνησεται του ευρειν

For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hatred, man doesn’t know it; all is before them.

οτι συν παν τουτο εδωκα εις καρδιαν μου και καρδια μου συν παν ειδεν τουτο ως οι δικαιοι και οι σοφοι και εργασιαι αυτων εν χειρι του θεου και γε αγαπην και γε μισος ουκ εστιν ειδως ο ανθρωπος τα παντα προ προσωπου αυτων

This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all. Yes also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

τουτο πονηρον εν παντι πεποιημενω υπο τον ηλιον οτι συναντημα εν τοις πασιν και γε καρδια υιων του ανθρωπου επληρωθη πονηρου και περιφερεια εν καρδια αυτων εν ζωη αυτων και οπισω αυτων προς τους νεκρους

For man also doesn’t know his time. As the fish that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly on them.

οτι και γε ουκ εγνω ο ανθρωπος τον καιρον αυτου ως οι ιχθυες οι θηρευομενοι εν αμφιβληστρω κακω και ως ορνεα τα θηρευομενα εν παγιδι ως αυτα παγιδευονται οι υιοι του ανθρωπου εις καιρον πονηρον οταν επιπεση επ αυτους αφνω

Now a poor wise man was found in it, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

A fool also multiplies words. Man doesn’t know what will be; and that which will be after him, who can tell him?

και ο αφρων πληθυνει λογους ουκ εγνω ο ανθρωπος τι το γενομενον και τι το εσομενον οπισω αυτου τις αναγγελει αυτω

Yes, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many. All that comes is vanity.

yes, they shall be afraid of heights, and terrors will be on the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail; because man goes to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about the streets;

This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.

Man is brought low, and mankind is humbled; therefore don’t forgive them.

και εκυψεν ανθρωπος και εταπεινωθη ανηρ και ου μη ανησω αυτους

The lofty looks of man will be brought low, the arrogance of men will be bowed down, and Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day.

The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the arrogance of men shall be brought low; and Yahweh alone shall be exalted in that day.

Stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils; for of what account is he?

So man is brought low, mankind is humbled, and the eyes of the arrogant ones are humbled;

και ταπεινωθησεται ανθρωπος και ατιμασθησεται ανηρ και οι οφθαλμοι οι μετεωροι ταπεινωθησονται

Then I said, “Lord, how long?” He answered, “Until cities are waste without inhabitant, houses without man, the land becomes utterly waste,

and Yahweh has removed men far away, and the forsaken places are many within the land.

και μετα ταυτα μακρυνει ο θεος τους ανθρωπους και οι καταλειφθεντες πληθυνθησονται επι της γης

I will make people more rare than fine gold, even a person than the pure gold of Ophir.

In that day, people will look to their Maker, and their eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel.

Since you have been precious and honored in my sight, and I have loved you, therefore I will give people in your place, and nations instead of your life.

Behold, all his fellows will be disappointed; and the workmen are mere men. Let them all be gathered together. Let them stand up. They will fear. They will be put to shame together.

The carpenter stretches out a line. He marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes. He marks it out with compasses, and shapes it like the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to reside in a house.

τεκτων ξυλον εστησεν αυτο εν μετρω και εν κολλη ερρυθμισεν αυτο εποιησεν αυτο ως μορφην ανδρος και ως ωραιοτητα ανθρωπου στησαι αυτο εν οικω

Then it will be for a man to burn; and he takes some of it and warms himself. Yes, he burns it and bakes bread. Yes, he makes a god and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.

ινα η ανθρωποις εις καυσιν και λαβων απ αυτου εθερμανθη και καυσαντες επεψαν αρτους επ αυτων το δε λοιπον ειργασαντο εις θεους και προσκυνουσιν αυτους

I have made the earth, and created man on it. I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens. I have commanded all their army.

“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you, that you are afraid of man who shall die, and of the son of man who will be made as grass?

εγω ειμι εγω ειμι ο παρακαλων σε γνωθι τινα ευλαβηθεισα εφοβηθης απο ανθρωπου θνητου και απο υιου ανθρωπου οι ωσει χορτος εξηρανθησαν

Just as many were astonished at you— his appearance was marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men—

μακαριος ανηρ ο ποιων ταυτα και ανθρωπος ο αντεχομενος αυτων και φυλασσων τα σαββατα μη βεβηλουν και διατηρων τας χειρας αυτου μη ποιειν αδικημα

Is this the fast that I have chosen? A day for a man to humble his soul? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under himself? Will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?

Is it such a fast H6685 that I have chosen? H977 (QalImpf) a day H3117 for a man H120 to afflict H6031 (PielInf) his soul? ου ταυτην την νηστειαν εξελεξαμην και ημεραν ταπεινουν ανθρωπον την ψυχην αυτου ουδ αν καμψης ως κρικον τον τραχηλον σου και σακκον και σποδον υποστρωση ουδ ουτως καλεσετε νηστειαν δεκτην

They didn’t say, ‘Where is Yahweh who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no one passed through, and where no man lived?’

I saw, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the sky had fled.

Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: “Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, on man, on animal, on the trees of the field, and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and will not be quenched.”

Speak, “Yahweh says, “ ‘The dead bodies of men will fall as dung on the open field, and as the handful after the harvester. No one will gather them.’ ”

Every man has become brutish and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is disappointed by his engraved image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

εμωρανθη πας ανθρωπος απο γνωσεως κατησχυνθη πας χρυσοχοος επι τοις γλυπτοις αυτου οτι ψευδη εχωνευσαν ουκ εστιν πνευμα εν αυτοις

Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

Should a man make to himself gods which yet are no gods?”

Yahweh says: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man, relies on strength of flesh, and whose heart departs from Yahweh.

επικαταρατος ο ανθρωπος ος την ελπιδα εχει επ ανθρωπον και στηρισει σαρκα βραχιονος αυτου επ αυτον και απο κυριου αποστη η καρδια αυτου

I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and animal. They will die of a great pestilence.

‘I have made the earth, the men, and the animals that are on the surface of the earth by my great power and by my outstretched arm. I give it to whom it seems right to me.

But everyone will die for his own iniquity. Every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth will be set on edge.
