The king of Jericho, one; The king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;

all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, even all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the children of Israel. Just allocate it to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.

All the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of the hill country H2022 from Lebanon H3844 unto Misrephothmaim, H4956 [and] all the Sidonians, H6722 them will I drive out H3423 (HiphImpf) from before H6440 the children H1121 of Israel: H3478 only divide thou it by lot H5307 (HiphImpv) unto the Israelites H3478 for an inheritance, H5159 as I have commanded H6680 (PielPerf) thee.

all the inhabitants of the hill-country, from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-Maim, all the Sidonians: I-I dispossess them before the sons of Israel; only, cause it to fall to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward.

These [are the countries] which Moses H4872 did distribute for inheritance H5157 (PielPerf) in the plains H6160 of Moab, H4124 on the other side H5676 Jordan, H3383 by Jericho, H3405 eastward. H4217

These are they whom Moses caused to inherit in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan, by Jericho, eastward;

For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan; but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

for Moses hath given the inheritance of two of the tribes, and of half of the tribe, beyond the Jordan, and to the Levites he hath not given an inheritance in their midst;

Ten parts fell to Manasseh, in addition to the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan;

And ten portions fall to Manasseh, apart from the land of Gilead and Bashan, which are beyond the Jordan;

However, the Levites have no portion among you; for the priesthood of Yahweh is their inheritance. Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance east of the Jordan, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave them.”

But the Levites H3881 have no part H2506 among H7130 you; for the priesthood H3550 of the Lord H3068 [is] their inheritance: H5159 and Gad, H1410 and Reuben, H7205 and half H2677 the tribe H7626 of Manasseh, H4519 have received H3947 (QalPerf) their inheritance H5159 beyond H5676 Jordan H3383 on the east, H4217 which Moses H4872 the servant H5650 of the Lord H3068 gave H5414 (QalPerf) them.

for there is no portion to the Levites in your midst, for the priesthood of Jehovah is their inheritance, and Gad, and Reuben, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh received their inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward, which Moses servant of Jehovah gave to them.’

Out of the part of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon; for the portion of the children of Judah was too much for them. Therefore the children of Simeon had inheritance in the middle of their inheritance.

Out of the portion H2256 of the children H1121 of Judah H3063 [was] the inheritance H5159 of the children H1121 of Simeon: H8095 for the part H2506 of the children H1121 of Judah H3063 was too much H7227 for them: therefore the children H1121 of Simeon H8095 had their inheritance H5157 (QalImpf) within H8432 the inheritance H5159 of them.

out of the portion of the sons of Judah is the inheritance of the sons of Simeon, for the portion of the sons of Judah hath been too much for them, and the sons of Simeon inherit in the midst of their inheritance.

The border of the children of Dan went out beyond them; for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and lived therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their forefather.

And the coast H1366 of the children H1121 of Dan H1835 went out H3318 (QalImpf) [too little] for them: therefore the children H1121 of Dan H1835 went up H5927 (QalImpf) to fight H3898 (NiphImpf) against Leshem, H3959 and took H3920 (QalImpf) it, and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) it with the edge H6310 of the sword, H2719 and possessed H3423 (QalImpf) it, and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) therein, and called H7121 (QalImpf) Leshem, H3959 Dan, H1835 after the name H8034 of Dan H1835 their father. And the border of the sons of Dan goeth out from them, and the sons of Dan go up and fight with Leshem, and capture it, and smite it by the mouth of the sword, and possess it, and dwell in it, and call Leshem, Dan, according to the name of Dan their father.

If the avenger of blood pursues him, then they shall not deliver up the man slayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, and didn’t hate him before.

And if the avenger H1350 (QalActPtc) of blood H1818 pursue H7291 (QalImpf) after H310 him, then they shall not deliver H5462 (HiphImpf) the slayer H7523 (QalActPtc) up into his hand; H3027 because he smote H5221 (HiphPerf) his neighbour H7453 unwittingly, H1097 H1847 and hated H8130 (QalActPtc) him not beforetime. ‘And when the redeemer of blood doth pursue after him, then they do not shut up the man-slayer into his hand, for without knowledge he hath smitten his neighbour, and is not hating him hitherto;

Beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

And on the other side H5676 Jordan H3383 by Jericho H3405 eastward, H4217 they assigned H5414 (QalPerf) Bezer H1221 in the wilderness H4057 upon the plain H4334 out of the tribe H4294 of Reuben, H7205 and Ramoth H7216 in Gilead H1568 out of the tribe H4294 of Gad, H1410 and Golan H1474 in Bashan H1316 out of the tribe H4294 of Manasseh. and beyond the Jordan, at Jericho eastward, they have given Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of Yahweh, in which Yahweh’s tabernacle dwells, and take possession among us; but don’t rebel against Yahweh, nor rebel against us, in building an altar other than Yahweh our God’s altar.

Notwithstanding, H389 if the land H776 of your possession H272 [be] unclean, H2931 [then] pass ye over H5674 (QalImpv) unto the land H776 of the possession H272 of the Lord, H3068 wherein the Lord’s H3068 tabernacle H4908 dwelleth, H7931 (QalPerf) and take possession H270 (NiphImpv) among H8432 us: but rebel H4775 (QalImpf) not against the Lord, H3068 nor H408 rebel H4775 (QalImpf) against us, in building H1129 (QalInf) you an altar H4196 beside H1107 the altar H4196 of the Lord H3068 our God. ‘And surely, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over for you unto the land of the possession of Jehovah, where the tabernacle of Jehovah hath tabernacled, and have possession in our midst; and against Jehovah rebel not, and against us rebel not, by your building for you an altar, besides the altar of Jehovah our God.

“Far be it from us that we should rebel against Yahweh, and turn away today from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides Yahweh our God’s altar that is before his tabernacle!”

God forbid H2486 that we should rebel H4775 (QalInf) against the Lord, H3068 and turn H7725 (QalInf) this day H3117 from following H310 the Lord, H3068 to build H1129 (QalInf) an altar H4196 for burnt offerings, H5930 for meat offerings, H4503 or for sacrifices, H2077 beside the altar H4196 of the Lord H3068 our God H430 that [is] before H6440 his tabernacle. H4908

‘Far be it from us to rebel against Jehovah, and to turn back to-day from after Jehovah, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for present, and for sacrifice, apart from the altar of Jehovah our God, which is before His tabernacle.’

You have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to all these nations because of you; for it is Yahweh your God who has fought for you.

And ye have seen H7200 (QalPerf) all that the Lord H3068 your God H430 hath done H6213 (QalPerf) unto all these nations H1471 because H6440 of you; for the Lord H3068 your God H430 [is] he that hath fought H3898 (NiphPtc) for you.

and ye-ye have seen all that Jehovah your God hath done to all these nations because of you, for Jehovah your God is He who is fighting for you;

I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his offspring,^§ and gave him Isaac.

and I take your father Abraham from beyond the River, and cause him to go through all the land of Canaan, and multiply his seed, and give to him Isaac.

I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with your sword, nor with your bow.

Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.’ ”

And I also have said, I do not cast them out from your presence, and they have been to you for adversaries, and their gods are to you for a snare.’

When Yahweh raised up judges for them, then Yahweh was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it grieved Yahweh because of their groaning by reason of those who oppressed them and troubled them.

And when the Lord H3068 raised H6965 (HiphPerf) them up judges, H8199 (QalActPtc) then the Lord H3068 was with the judge, H8199 (QalActPtc) and delivered H3467 (HiphPerf) them out of the hand H3027 of their enemies H341 (QalActPtc) all the days H3117 of the judge: H8199 (QalActPtc) for it repented H5162 (NiphImpf) the Lord H3068 because H6440 of their groanings H5009 by reason of them that oppressed H3905 (QalPtc) them and vexed H1766 (QalActPtc) them.

And when Jehovah raised up to them judges-then was Jehovah with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repenteth Jehovah, because of their groaning from the presence of their oppressors, and of those thrusting them away.

But when the judge was dead, they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers in following other gods to serve them and to bow down to them. They didn’t cease what they were doing, or give up their stubborn ways.

And it came to pass, when the judge H8199 (QalActPtc) was dead, H4194 [that] they returned, H7725 (QalImpf) and corrupted H7843 (HiphPerf) [themselves] more than their fathers, H1 in following H3212 (QalInf) H310 other H312 gods H430 to serve H5647 (QalInf) them, and to bow down H7812 (HithInf) unto them; they ceased H5307 (HiphPerf) not from their own doings, H4611 nor from their stubborn H7186 way. H1870

And it hath come to pass, at the death of the judge-they turn back and have done corruptly above their fathers, to go after other gods, to serve them, and to bow themselves to them; they have not fallen from their doings, and from their stiff way.

I also will no longer drive out any of the nations that Joshua left when he died from before them;

I also will not henceforth H3254 (HiphImpf) drive out H3423 (HiphInf) any H376 from before H6440 them of the nations H1471 which Joshua H3091 left H5800 (QalPerf) when he died: H4191 (QalImpf)

I also continue not to dispossess any from before them of the nations which Joshua hath left when he dieth,

The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made themselves the dens which are in the mountains, the caves, and the strongholds.

And the hand H3027 of Midian H4080 prevailed H5810 (QalImpf) against Israel: H3478 [and] because H6440 of the Midianites H4080 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 made H6213 (QalPerf) them the dens H4492 which [are] in the mountains, H2022 and caves, H4631 and strong holds. H4679

and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, from the presence of Midian have the sons of Israel made for themselves the flowings which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh.

And Israel H3478 was greatly H3966 impoverished H1809 (NiphImpf) because H6440 of the Midianites; H4080 and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 cried H2199 (QalImpf) unto the Lord. H3068

And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah.

I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land.

And I delivered H5337 (HiphImpf) you out of the hand H3027 of the Egyptians, H4714 and out of the hand H3027 of all that oppressed H3905 (QalPtc) you, and drave them out H1644 (PielImpf) from before H6440 you, and gave H5414 (QalImpf) you their land; H776

and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all your oppressors, and I cast them out from your presence, and I give to you their land,

Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

And Jehovah saith unto Gideon, ‘Too many are the people who are with thee for My giving Midian into their hand, lest Israel beautify itself against Me, saying, My hand hath given salvation to me;

So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of the men of Israel to their own tents, but retained the three hundred men; and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

And the people take the provision in their hand, and their trumpets, and every man of Israel he hath sent away, each to his tents; and on the three hundred men he hath kept hold, and the camp of Midian hath been by him at the lower part of the valley.

He said to them, “What have I now done in comparison with you? Isn’t the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, What have I done H6213 (QalPerf) now in comparison of you? [Is] not the gleaning H5955 of the grapes of Ephraim H669 better H2896 than the vintage H1210 of Abiezer? H44

and he saith unto them, ‘What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer?

God has delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb! What was I able to do in comparison with you?” Then their anger was abated toward him when he had said that.

Into your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?’ Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing.

The weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand and seven hundred shekels° of gold, in addition to the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian, and in addition to the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

Judges 8:26 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.32 Troy ounces, so 1700 shekels is about 17 kilograms or 37.4 pounds.

And the weight H4948 of the golden H2091 earrings H5141 that he requested H7592 (QalPerf) was a thousand H505 and seven H7651 hundred H3967 [shekels] of gold; H2091 beside ornaments, H7720 and collars, H5188 and purple H713 raiment H899 that [was] on the kings H4428 of Midian, H4080 and beside the chains H6060 that [were] about their camels’ H1581 necks. and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which are on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which are on the necks of their camels,

Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer° and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

Judges 9:21 “Beer” is Hebrew for “well”, i.e., a village named for its well.

Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.

Abimelech lived at Arumah; and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

And Abimelech abideth in Arumah, and Zebul casteth out Gaal and his brethren from dwelling in Shechem.

After a while, the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

And it came to pass in process of time, H3117 that the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 made war H3898 (NiphImpf) against Israel. H3478

And it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,

Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

Wilt not thou possess H3423 (QalImpf) that which Chemosh H3645 thy god H430 giveth thee to possess? H3423 (HiphImpf) So whomsoever the Lord H3068 our God H430 shall drive out H3423 (HiphPerf) from before H6440 us, them will we possess. H3423 (QalImpf)

That which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess-dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence,-it we do possess.

Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

And now [art] thou any thing better H2896 than Balak H1111 the son H1121 of Zippor, H6834 king H4428 of Moab? H4124 did he ever H7378 (QalInf) strive H7378 (QalPerf) against Israel, H3478 or did he ever H3898 (NiphInf) fight H3898 (NiphPerf) against them,

‘And now, art thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?

He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

and he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards-a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.

Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

And she saith unto him, ‘My father-thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.’

Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me. Leave me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of Yahweh; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.

And his father and his mother have not known that from Jehovah it is, that a meeting he is seeking of the Philistines; and at that time the Philistines are ruling over Israel.

After a while he returned to take her, and he went over to see the carcass of the lion; and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey.

and he turneth back after some days to take her, and turneth aside to see the carcase of the lion, and lo, a company of bees are in the body of the lion-and honey.

The men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” He said to them, “If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer, you wouldn’t have found out my riddle.”

And the men of the city say to him on the seventh day, before the sun goeth in:- ‘What is sweeter than honey? And what stronger than a lion?’ And he saith to them: ‘Unless ye had ploughed with my heifer, Ye had not found out my riddle.’

But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.” But her father wouldn’t allow him to go in.

But it came to pass within a while after, H3117 in the time H3117 of wheat H2406 harvest, H7105 that Samson H8123 visited H6485 (QalImpf) his wife H802 with a kid; H1423 H5795 and he said, H559 (QalImpf) I will go in H935 (QalImpf) to my wife H802 into the chamber. And it cometh to pass, after some days, in the days of wheat-harvest, that Samson looketh after his wife, with a kid of the goats, and saith, ‘I go in unto my wife, to the inner chamber;’ and her father hath not permitted him to go in,

Her father said, “I most certainly thought that you utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Isn’t her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please, take her instead.”

and her father saith, I certainly said, that thou didst certainly hate her, and I give her to thy companion; is not her sister-the young one-better than she? Let her be, I pray thee, to thee, instead of her.’

Samson said to them, “This time I will be blameless in the case of the Philistines when I harm them.”

And Samson H8123 said H559 (QalImpf) concerning them, Now H6471 shall I be more blameless H5352 (NiphPerf) than the Philistines, H6430 though I do H6213 (QalActPtc) them a displeasure. H7451

And Samson saith of them, ‘I am more innocent this time than the Philistines, though I am doing with them evil.’

When he had set the torches on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the olive groves.

And when he had set H1197 (HiphImpf) the brands H3940 on fire, H784 he let [them] go H7971 (PielImpf) into the standing corn H7054 of the Philistines, H6430 and burnt up H1197 (HiphImpf) both the shocks, H1430 and also the standing corn, H7054 with the vineyards H3754 [and] olives. H2132

and kindleth fire in the torches, and sendeth them out into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burneth it from heap even unto standing corn, even unto vineyard-olive-yard.

He told her all his heart and said to her, “No razor has ever come on my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother’s womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me and I will become weak, and be like any other man.”

that he declareth to her all his heart, and saith to her, ‘A razor hath not gone up on my head, for a Nazarite to God I am from the womb of my mother; if I have been shaven, then hath my power turned aside from me, and I have been weak, and have been as any of the human race.’

Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” He bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than those who he killed in his life.

And Samson H8123 said, H559 (QalImpf) Let me die H4191 (QalImpf) H5315 with the Philistines. H6430 And he bowed H5186 (QalImpf) himself with [all his] might; H3581 and the house H1004 fell H5307 (QalImpf) upon the lords, H5633 and upon all the people H5971 that [were] therein. So the dead H4191 (QalPtc) which he slew H4191 (HiphPerf) at his death H4194 were more H7227 than [they] which he slew H4191 (HiphPerf) in his life. H2416

and Samson saith, ‘Let me die with the Philistines,’ and he inclineth himself powerfully, and the house falleth on the princes, and on all the people who are in it, and the dead whom he hath put to death in his death are more than those whom he put to death in his life.

The children of Dan went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.

And the children H1121 of Dan H1835 went H3212 (QalImpf) their way: H1870 and when Micah H4318 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that they [were] too strong H2389 for him, he turned H6437 (QalImpf) and went back H7725 (QalImpf) unto his house. H1004

and the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah seeth that they are stronger than he, and turneth, and goeth back unto his house.

The children of Benjamin were counted on that day out of the cities twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, in addition to the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were counted seven hundred chosen men.

And the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 were numbered H6485 (HithImpf) at that time H3117 out of the cities H5892 twenty H6242 and six H8337 thousand H505 men H376 that drew H8025 (QalActPtc) sword, H2719 beside the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Gibeah, H1390 which were numbered H6485 (HithPerf) seven H7651 hundred H3967 chosen H977 (QalPasPtc) men. H376

And the sons of Benjamin number themselves on that day; out of the cities are twenty and six thousand men drawing sword, apart from the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered themselves, seven hundred chosen men;

The men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were counted four hundred thousand men who drew sword. All these were men of war.

And the men H376 of Israel, H3478 beside Benjamin, H1144 were numbered H6485 (HithPerf) four H702 hundred H3967 thousand H505 men H376 that drew H8025 (QalActPtc) sword: H2719 all these [were] men H376 of war. H4421

And the men of Israel numbered themselves, apart from Benjamin, four hundred thousand men, drawing sword, each of these a man of war.
