[1] Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in Yahweh’s house, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. [2] Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in Yahweh’s house. [3] On the next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “Yahweh has not called your name Pashhur, but Magormissabib. [4] For Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon, and will kill them with the sword. [5] Moreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all its gains, and all its precious things, yes, I will give all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies. They will make them captives, take them, and carry them to Babylon. [6] You, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house will go into captivity. You will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.’ ” [7] Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded.
You are stronger than I, and have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all day.
Everyone mocks me.
[8] For as often as I speak, I cry out;
I cry, “Violence and destruction!”
because Yahweh’s word has been made a reproach to me,
and a derision, all day.
[9] If I say that I will not make mention of him,
or speak any more in his name,
then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones.
I am weary with holding it in.
I can’t.
[10] For I have heard the defaming of many:
“Terror on every side!
Denounce, and we will denounce him!”
say all my familiar friends,
those who watch for my fall.
“Perhaps he will be persuaded,
and we will prevail against him,
and we will take our revenge on him.”
[11] But Yahweh is with me as an awesome mighty one.
Therefore my persecutors will stumble,
and they won’t prevail.
They will be utterly disappointed
because they have not dealt wisely,
even with an everlasting dishonor which will never be forgotten.
[12] But Yahweh of Armies, who tests the righteous,
who sees the heart and the mind,
let me see your vengeance on them,
for I have revealed my cause to you.
[13] Sing to Yahweh!
Praise Yahweh,
for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
[14] Cursed is the day in which I was born.
Don’t let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed.
[15] Cursed is the man who brought news to my father, saying,
“A boy is born to you,” making him very glad.
[16] Let that man be as the cities which Yahweh overthrew,
and didn’t repent.
Let him hear a cry in the morning,
and shouting at noontime,
[17] because he didn’t kill me from the womb.
So my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb always great.
[18] Why did I come out of the womb to see labor and sorrow,
that my days should be consumed with shame?

Jeremiah in the Stocks

[1] Now Pashur H6583 the son H1121 of Immer H564 the priest, H3548 who was also chief H6496 governor H5057 in the house H1004 of the Lord, H3068 heard H8085 (QalImpf) that Jeremiah H3414 prophesied H5012 (NiphPerf) these things. H1697
[2] Then Pashur H6583 smote H5221 (HiphImpf) Jeremiah H3414 the prophet, H5030 and put H5414 (QalImpf) him in the stocks H4115 that were in the high H5945 gate H8179 of Benjamin, H1144 which was by the house H1004 of the Lord. H3068 [3] And it came to pass on the morrow, H4283 that Pashur H6583 brought forth H3318 (HiphImpf) Jeremiah H3414 out of the stocks. H4115 Then said H559 (QalImpf) Jeremiah H3414 unto him, The Lord H3068 hath not called H7121 (QalPerf) thy name H8034 Pashur, H6583 but Magor-missabib. H4036 [4] For thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord, H3068 Behold, I will make H5414 (QalActPtc) thee a terror H4032 to thyself, and to all thy friends: H157 (QalActPtc) and they shall fall H5307 (QalPerf) by the sword H2719 of their enemies, H341 (QalActPtc) and thine eyes H5869 shall behold H7200 (QalActPtc) it: and I will give H5414 (QalImpf) all Judah H3063 into the hand H3027 of the king H4428 of Babylon, H894 and he shall carry them captive H1540 (HiphPerf) into Babylon, H894 and shall slay H5221 (HiphPerf) them with the sword. H2719 [5] Moreover I will deliver H5414 (QalPerf) all the strength H2633 of this city, H5892 and all the labours H3018 thereof, and all the precious things H3366 thereof, and all the treasures H214 of the kings H4428 of Judah H3063 will I give H5414 (QalImpf) into the hand H3027 of their enemies, H341 (QalActPtc) which shall spoil H962 (QalPerf) them, and take H3947 (QalPerf) them, and carry H935 (HiphPerf) them to Babylon. H894 [6] And thou, Pashur, H6583 and all that dwell H3427 (QalActPtc) in thine house H1004 shall go H3212 (QalImpf) into captivity: H7628 and thou shalt come H935 (QalImpf) to Babylon, H894 and there thou shalt die, H4191 (QalImpf) and shalt be buried H6912 (NiphImpf) there, thou, and all thy friends, H157 (QalActPtc) to whom thou hast prophesied H5012 (NiphPerf) lies. H8267 [7] O Lord, H3068 thou hast deceived H6601 (PielPerf)§ me, and I was deceived: H6601 (NiphImpf) thou art stronger H2388 (QalPerf) than I, and hast prevailed: H3201 (QalImpf) I am in derision H7814 daily, H3117 every one mocketh H3932 (QalActPtc) me. [8] For since H1767 I spake, H1696 (PielImpf) I cried out, H2199 (QalImpf) I cried H7121 (QalImpf) violence H2555 and spoil; H7701 because the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 was made a reproach H2781 unto me, and a derision, H7047 daily. H3117 [9] Then I said, H559 (QalPerf) I will not make mention H2142 (QalImpf) of him, nor speak H1696 (PielImpf) any more in his name. H8034 But his word was in mine heart H3820 as a burning H1197 (QalActPtc) fire H784 shut up H6113 (QalPasPtc) in my bones, H6106 and I was weary H3811 (NiphPerf) with forbearing, H3557 (PilpInf) and I could H3201 (QalImpf) not stay. [10] For I heard H8085 (QalPerf) the defaming H1681 of many, H7227 fear H4032 on every side. H5439 Report, H5046 (HiphImpv) say they, and we will report H5046 (HiphImpf) it. All my familiars H582§ watched H8104 (QalActPtc) for my halting, H6763 (Ketiv) saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, H6601 (PualImpf) and we shall prevail H3201 (QalImpf) against him, and we shall take H3947 (QalImpf) our revenge H5360 on him. [11] But the Lord H3068 is with me as a mighty H1368 terrible one: H6184 therefore my persecutors H7291 (QalActPtc) shall stumble, H3782 (NiphImpf) and they shall not prevail: H3201 (QalImpf) they shall be greatly H3966 ashamed; H954 (QalPerf) for they shall not prosper: H7919 (HiphPerf) their everlasting H5769 confusion H3639 shall never be forgotten. H7911 (NiphImpf) [12] But, O Lord H3068 of hosts, H6635 that triest H974 (QalActPtc) the righteous, H6662 and seest H7200 (QalActPtc) the reins H3629 and the heart, H3820 let me see H7200 (QalImpf) thy vengeance H5360 on them: for unto thee have I opened H1540 (PielPerf) my cause. H7379 [13] Sing H7891 (QalImpv) unto the Lord, H3068 praise H1984 (PielImpv) ye the Lord: H3068 for he hath delivered H5337 (HiphPerf) the soul H5315 of the poor H34 from the hand H3027 of evildoers. H7489 (HiphPtc) [14] Cursed H779 (QalPasPtc) be the day H3117 wherein I was born: H3205 (PualPerf) let not the day H3117 wherein my mother H517 bare H3205 (QalPerf) me be blessed. H1288 (QalPasPtc) [15] Cursed H779 (QalPasPtc) be the man H376 who brought tidings H1319 (PielPerf) to my father, H1 saying, H559 (QalInf) A man H2145 child H1121 is born H3205 (PualPerf) unto thee; making him very H8055 (PielInf) glad. H8055 (PielPerf) [16] And let that man H376 be as the cities H5892 which the Lord H3068 overthrew, H2015 (QalPerf) and repented H5162 (NiphPerf) not: and let him hear H8085 (QalPerf) the cry H2201 in the morning, H1242 and the shouting H8643 at noontide; H6256 [17] because he slew H4191 (PolePerf) me not from the womb; H7358 or that my mother H517 might have been my grave, H6913 and her womb H7358 to be always H5769 great H2030 with me. [18] Wherefore came I forth H3318 (QalPerf) out of the womb H7358 to see H7200 (QalInf) labour H5999 and sorrow, H3015 that my days H3117 should be consumed H3615 (QalImpf) with shame? H1322
