[1] Now Pashhur, the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in Yahweh’s house, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. [2] Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Benjamin, which was in Yahweh’s house. [3] On the next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “Yahweh has not called your name Pashhur, but Magormissabib. [4] For Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon, and will kill them with the sword. [5] Moreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all its gains, and all its precious things, yes, I will give all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies. They will make them captives, take them, and carry them to Babylon. [6] You, Pashhur, and all who dwell in your house will go into captivity. You will come to Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.’ ” [7] Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded.
You are stronger than I, and have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all day.
Everyone mocks me.
[8] For as often as I speak, I cry out;
I cry, “Violence and destruction!”
because Yahweh’s word has been made a reproach to me,
and a derision, all day.
[9] If I say that I will not make mention of him,
or speak any more in his name,
then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones.
I am weary with holding it in.
I can’t.
[10] For I have heard the defaming of many:
“Terror on every side!
Denounce, and we will denounce him!”
say all my familiar friends,
those who watch for my fall.
“Perhaps he will be persuaded,
and we will prevail against him,
and we will take our revenge on him.”
[11] But Yahweh is with me as an awesome mighty one.
Therefore my persecutors will stumble,
and they won’t prevail.
They will be utterly disappointed
because they have not dealt wisely,
even with an everlasting dishonor which will never be forgotten.
[12] But Yahweh of Armies, who tests the righteous,
who sees the heart and the mind,
let me see your vengeance on them,
for I have revealed my cause to you.
[13] Sing to Yahweh!
Praise Yahweh,
for he has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
[14] Cursed is the day in which I was born.
Don’t let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed.
[15] Cursed is the man who brought news to my father, saying,
“A boy is born to you,” making him very glad.
[16] Let that man be as the cities which Yahweh overthrew,
and didn’t repent.
Let him hear a cry in the morning,
and shouting at noontime,
[17] because he didn’t kill me from the womb.
So my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb always great.
[18] Why did I come out of the womb to see labor and sorrow,
that my days should be consumed with shame?

[8] For sinceH1767 I spake,H1696(PielImpf) I cried out,H2199(QalImpf) I criedH7121(QalImpf) violenceH2555 and spoil;H7701 because the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 was made a reproachH2781 unto me, and a derision,H7047 daily.H3117 [9] Then I said,H559(QalPerf) I will not make mentionH2142(QalImpf) of him, nor speakH1696(PielImpf) any more in his name.H8034 But [his word] was in mine heartH3820 as a burningH1197(QalActPtc) fireH784 shut upH6113(QalPasPtc) in my bones,H6106 and I was wearyH3811(NiphPerf) with forbearing,H3557(PilpInf) and I couldH3201(QalImpf) not [stay]. [10] For I heardH8085(QalPerf) the defamingH1681 of many,H7227 fearH4032 on every side.H5439 Report,H5046(HiphImpv) [say they], and we will reportH5046(HiphImpf) it. All my familiarsH582 watchedH8104(QalActPtc) for my halting,H6763(Ketiv) [saying], Peradventure he will be enticed,H6601(PualImpf) and we shall prevailH3201(QalImpf) against him, and we shall takeH3947(QalImpf) our revengeH5360 on him. [11] But the LordH3068 [is] with me as a mightyH1368 terrible one:H6184 therefore my persecutorsH7291(QalActPtc) shall stumble,H3782(NiphImpf) and they shall not prevail:H3201(QalImpf) they shall be greatlyH3966 ashamed;H954(QalPerf) for they shall not prosper:H7919(HiphPerf) [their] everlastingH5769 confusionH3639 shall never be forgotten.H7911(NiphImpf) [12] But, O LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 that triestH974(QalActPtc) the righteous,H6662 [and] seestH7200(QalActPtc) the reinsH3629 and the heart,H3820 let me seeH7200(QalImpf) thy vengeanceH5360 on them: for unto thee have I openedH1540(PielPerf) my cause.H7379 [13] SingH7891(QalImpv) unto the Lord,H3068 praiseH1984(PielImpv) ye the Lord:H3068 for he hath deliveredH5337(HiphPerf) the soulH5315 of the poorH34 from the handH3027 of evildoers.H7489(HiphPtc) [14] CursedH779(QalPasPtc) [be] the dayH3117 wherein I was born:H3205(PualPerf) let not the dayH3117 wherein my motherH517 bareH3205(QalPerf) me be blessed.H1288(QalPasPtc) [15] CursedH779(QalPasPtc) [be] the manH376 who brought tidingsH1319(PielPerf) to my father,H1 saying,H559(QalInf) A manH2145 childH1121 is bornH3205(PualPerf) unto thee; making him veryH8055(PielInf) glad.H8055(PielPerf) [16] And let that manH376 be as the citiesH5892 which the LordH3068 overthrew,H2015(QalPerf) and repentedH5162(NiphPerf) not: and let him hearH8085(QalPerf) the cryH2201 in the morning,H1242 and the shoutingH8643 at noontide;H6256 [17] Because he slewH4191(PolePerf) me not from the womb;H7358 or that my motherH517 might have been my grave,H6913 and her wombH7358 [to be] alwaysH5769 greatH2030 [with me]. [18] Wherefore came I forthH3318(QalPerf) out of the wombH7358 to seeH7200(QalInf) labourH5999 and sorrow,H3015 that my daysH3117 should be consumedH3615(QalImpf) with shame?H1322
