[1] The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, with all his army, all the kingdoms of the earth that were under his dominion, and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem and against all its cities, saying: [2] “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Go, and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Yahweh says, “Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon and he will burn it with fire. [3] You won’t escape out of his hand, but will surely be taken and delivered into his hand. Your eyes will see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he will speak with you mouth to mouth. You will go to Babylon.” ’ [4] “Yet hear Yahweh’s word, O Zedekiah king of Judah. Yahweh says concerning you, ‘You won’t die by the sword. [5] You will die in peace; and with the burnings of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so they will make a burning for you. They will lament you, saying, “Ah Lord!” for I have spoken the word,’ says Yahweh.” [6] Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, [7] when the king of Babylon’s army was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and against Azekah; for these alone remained of the cities of Judah as fortified cities. [8] The word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them, [9] that every man should let his male servant, and every man his female servant, who is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free, that no one should make bondservants of them, of a Jew his brother. [10] All the princes and all the people obeyed who had entered into the covenant, that everyone should let his male servant and everyone his female servant go free, that no one should make bondservants of them any more. They obeyed and let them go, [11] but afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids whom they had let go free to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids. [12] Therefore Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, [13] “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying: [14] At the end of seven years, every man of you shall release his brother who is a Hebrew, who has been sold to you, and has served you six years. You shall let him go free from you. But your fathers didn’t listen to me, and didn’t incline their ear. [15] You had now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in every man proclaiming liberty to his neighbor. You had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name; [16] but you turned and profaned my name, and every man caused his servant and every man his handmaid, whom you had let go free at their pleasure, to return. You brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaids.’ ” [17] Therefore Yahweh says: “You have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim to you a liberty,” says Yahweh, “to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine. I will make you be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth. [18] I will give the men who have transgressed my covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before me when they cut the calf in two and passed between its parts: [19] the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land, who passed between the parts of the calf. [20] I will even give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. Their dead bodies will be food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth. [21] “I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes into the hands of their enemies, into the hands of those who seek their life and into the hands of the king of Babylon’s army, who has gone away from you. [22] Behold, I will command,” says Yahweh, “and cause them to return to this city. They will fight against it, take it, and burn it with fire. I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”
King James Version
[1] The wordH1697 which came unto JeremiahH3414 from the Lord,H3068 when NebuchadnezzarH5019 kingH4428 of Babylon,H894 and all his army,H2428 and all the kingdomsH4467 of the earthH776 of his dominion,H3027 and all the people,H5971 foughtH3898(NiphPtc) against Jerusalem,H3389 and against all the citiesH5892 thereof, saying,H559(QalInf) [2] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 the GodH430 of Israel;H3478 GoH1980(QalInf) and speakH559(QalPerf) to ZedekiahH6667 kingH4428 of Judah,H3063 and tellH559(QalPerf) him, Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord;H3068 Behold, I will giveH5414(QalActPtc) this cityH5892 into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of Babylon,H894 and he shall burnH8313(QalPerf) it with fire:H784 [3] And thou shalt not escape outH4422(NiphImpf) of his hand,H3027 but shalt surelyH8610(QalInf) be taken,H8610(NiphImpf) and deliveredH5414(NiphImpf) into his hand;H3027 and thine eyesH5869 shall beholdH7200(QalImpf) the eyesH5869 of the kingH4428 of Babylon,H894 and he shall speakH1696(PielImpf) with thee mouthH6310 to mouth,H6310 and thou shalt goH935(QalImpf) to Babylon.H894 [4] Yet hearH8085(QalImpv) the wordH1697 of the Lord,H3068 O ZedekiahH6667 kingH4428 of Judah;H3063 Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 of thee, Thou shalt not dieH4191(QalImpf) by the sword:H2719 [5] [But] thou shalt dieH4191(QalImpf) in peace:H7965 and with the burningsH4955 of thy fathers,H1 the formerH7223 kingsH4428 which were beforeH6440 thee, so shall they burnH8313(QalImpf) [odours] for thee; and they will lamentH5594(QalImpf) thee, [saying], AhH1945 lord!H113 for I have pronouncedH1696(PielPerf) the word,H1697 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord.H3068 [6] Then JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 spakeH1696(PielImpf) all these wordsH1697 unto ZedekiahH6667 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 in Jerusalem,H3389 [7] When the kingH4428 of Babylon’sH894 armyH2428 foughtH3898(NiphPtc) against Jerusalem,H3389 and against all the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 that were left,H3498(NiphPtc) against Lachish,H3923 and against Azekah:H5825 for these defencedH4013 citiesH5892 remainedH7604(NiphPerf) of the citiesH5892 of Judah.H3063 [8] [This is] the wordH1697 that came unto JeremiahH3414 from the Lord,H3068 afterH310 that the kingH4428 ZedekiahH6667 had madeH3772(QalInf) a covenantH1285 with all the peopleH5971 which [were] at Jerusalem,H3389 to proclaimH7121(QalInf) libertyH1865 unto them; [9] That every manH376 should let his manservant,H5650 and every manH376 his maidservant,H8198 [being] an HebrewH5680 or an Hebrewess,H5680 goH7971(PielInf) free;H2670 that none should serveH5647(QalInf) himself of them, [to wit], of a JewH3064 his brother.H251 [10] Now when all the princes,H8269 and all the people,H5971 which had enteredH935(QalPerf) into the covenant,H1285 heardH8085(QalImpf) that every oneH376 should let his manservant,H5650 and every oneH376 his maidservant,H8198 goH7971(PielInf) free,H2670 that none should serveH5647(QalInf) themselves of them any more, then they obeyed,H8085(QalImpf) and let [them] go.H7971(PielImpf) [11] But afterwardH310 they turned,H7725(QalImpf) and caused the servantsH5650 and the handmaids,H8198 whom they had let goH7971(PielPerf) free,H2670 to return,H7725(HiphImpf) and brought them into subjectionH3533(QalImpf/Qere) for servantsH5650 and for handmaids.H8198 [12] Therefore the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 came to JeremiahH3414 from the Lord,H3068 saying,H559(QalInf) [13] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 the GodH430 of Israel;H3478 I madeH3772(QalPerf) a covenantH1285 with your fathersH1 in the dayH3117 that I brought them forthH3318(HiphInf) out of the landH776 of Egypt,H4714 out of the houseH1004 of bondmen,H5650 saying,H559(QalInf) [14] At the endH7093 of sevenH7651 yearsH8141 let ye goH7971(PielImpf) every manH376 his brotherH251 an Hebrew,H5680 which hath been soldH4376(NiphImpf) unto thee; and when he hath servedH5647(QalPerf) thee sixH8337 years,H8141 thou shalt let him goH7971(PielPerf) freeH2670 from thee: but your fathersH1 hearkenedH8085(QalPerf) not unto me, neither inclinedH5186(HiphPerf) their ear.H241 [15] And ye were nowH3117 turned,H7725(QalImpf) and had doneH6213(QalImpf) rightH3477 in my sight,H5869 in proclaimingH7121(QalInf) libertyH1865 every manH376 to his neighbour;H7453 and ye had madeH3772(QalImpf) a covenantH1285 beforeH6440 me in the houseH1004 which is calledH7121(NiphPerf) by my name:H8034 [16] But ye turnedH7725(QalImpf) and pollutedH2490(PielImpf) my name,H8034 and caused every manH376 his servant,H5650 and every manH376 his handmaid,H8198 whom ye had setH7971(PielPerf) at libertyH2670 at their pleasure,H5315 to return,H7725(HiphImpf) and brought them into subjection,H3533(QalImpf) to be unto you for servantsH5650 and for handmaids.H8198 [17] Therefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord;H3068 Ye have not hearkenedH8085(QalPerf) unto me, in proclaimingH7121(QalInf) liberty,H1865 every oneH376 to his brother,H251 and every manH376 to his neighbour:H7453 behold, I proclaimH7121(QalActPtc) a libertyH1865 for you, saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord,H3068 to the sword,H2719 to the pestilence,H1698 and to the famine;H7458 and I will makeH5414(QalPerf) you to be removedH2189(Qere) into all the kingdomsH4467 of the earth.H776 [18] And I will giveH5414(QalPerf) the menH582 that have transgressedH5674(QalActPtc) my covenant,H1285 which have not performedH6965(HiphPerf) the wordsH1697 of the covenantH1285 which they had madeH3772(QalPerf) beforeH6440 me, when they cutH3772(QalPerf) the calfH5695 in twain,H8147 and passedH5674(QalImpf) between the partsH1335 thereof, [19] The princesH8269 of Judah,H3063 and the princesH8269 of Jerusalem,H3389 the eunuchs,H5631 and the priests,H3548 and all the peopleH5971 of the land,H776 which passedH5674(QalActPtc) between the partsH1335 of the calf;H5695 [20] I will even giveH5414(QalPerf) them into the handH3027 of their enemies,H341(QalActPtc) and into the handH3027 of them that seekH1245(PielPtc) their life:H5315 and their dead bodiesH5038 shall be for meatH3978 unto the fowlsH5775 of the heaven,H8064 and to the beastsH929 of the earth.H776 [21] And ZedekiahH6667 kingH4428 of JudahH3063 and his princesH8269 will I giveH5414(QalImpf) into the handH3027 of their enemies,H341(QalActPtc) and into the handH3027 of them that seekH1245(PielPtc) their life,H5315 and into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of Babylon’sH894 army,H2428 which are gone upH5927(QalActPtc) from you. [22] Behold, I will command,H6680(PielPtc) saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord,H3068 and cause them to returnH7725(HiphPerf) to this city;H5892 and they shall fightH3898(NiphPerf) against it, and takeH3920(QalPerf) it, and burnH8313(QalPerf) it with fire:H784 and I will makeH5414(QalImpf) the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 a desolationH8077 without an inhabitant.H3427(QalActPtc)
