[1] The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, [2] “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words.” [3] Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was making something on the wheels. [4] When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. [5] Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, [6] “House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter?” says Yahweh. “Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel. [7] At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it, [8] if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them. [9] At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, [10] if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them. [11] “Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Yahweh says: “Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a plan against you. Everyone return from his evil way now, and amend your ways and your doings.” ’ [12] But they say, ‘It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’ ” [13] Therefore Yahweh says:
“Ask now among the nations,
‘Who has heard such things?’
The virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.
[14] Will the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field?
Will the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?
[15] For my people have forgotten me.
They have burned incense to false gods.
They have been made to stumble in their ways
in the ancient paths,
to walk in byways, in a way not built up,
[16] to make their land an astonishment,
and a perpetual hissing.
Everyone who passes by it will be astonished,
and shake his head.
[17] I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy.
I will show them the back, and not the face,
in the day of their calamity.
[18] Then they said, “Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words.”
[19] Give heed to me, Yahweh,
and listen to the voice of those who contend with me.
[20] Should evil be recompensed for good?
For they have dug a pit for my soul.
Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them,
to turn away your wrath from them.
[21] Therefore deliver up their children to the famine,
and give them over to the power of the sword.
Let their wives become childless and widows.
Let their men be killed
and their young men struck by the sword in battle.
[22] Let a cry be heard from their houses
when you bring a troop suddenly on them;
for they have dug a pit to take me
and hidden snares for my feet.
[23] Yet, Yahweh, you know all their counsel against me to kill me.
Don’t forgive their iniquity.
Don’t blot out their sin from your sight,
Let them be overthrown before you.
Deal with them in the time of your anger.

[1] The wordH1697 which came to JeremiahH3414 from the Lord,H3068 saying,H559(QalInf) [2] Arise,H6965(QalImpv) and go downH3381(QalPerf) to the potter’sH3335(QalActPtc) house,H1004 and there I will cause thee to hearH8085(HiphImpf) my words.H1697 [3] Then I went downH3381(QalImpf) to the potter’sH3335(QalActPtc) house,H1004 and, behold,H2009 he wroughtH6213(QalActPtc) a workH4399 on the wheels.H70 [4] And the vesselH3627 that he madeH6213(QalActPtc) of clayH2563 was marredH7843(NiphPerf) in the handH3027 of the potter:H3335(QalActPtc) so he madeH6213(QalImpf) it againH7725(QalPerf) anotherH312 vessel,H3627 as seemedH5869 goodH3474(QalPerf) to the potterH3335(QalActPtc) to makeH6213(QalInf) [it]. [5] Then the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 came to me, saying,H559(QalInf) [6] O houseH1004 of Israel,H3478 cannotH3201(QalImpf) I doH6213(QalInf) with you as this potter?H3335(QalActPtc) saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord.H3068 Behold, as the clayH2563 [is] in the potter’sH3335(QalActPtc) hand,H3027 so [are] ye in mine hand,H3027 O houseH1004 of Israel.H3478 [7] [At what] instantH7281 I shall speakH1696(PielImpf) concerning a nation,H1471 and concerning a kingdom,H4467 to pluck up,H5428(QalInf) and to pull down,H5422(QalInf) and to destroyH6(HiphInf) [it]; [8] If that nation,H1471 against whom I have pronounced,H1696(PielPerf) turnH7725(QalPerf) from their evil,H7451 I will repentH5162(NiphPerf) of the evilH7451 that I thoughtH2803(QalPerf) to doH6213(QalInf) unto them. [9] And [at what] instantH7281 I shall speakH1696(PielImpf) concerning a nation,H1471 and concerning a kingdom,H4467 to buildH1129(QalInf) and to plantH5193(QalInf) [it]; [10] If it doH6213(QalPerf) evilH7451 in my sight,H5869 that it obeyH8085(QalInf) not my voice,H6963 then I will repentH5162(NiphPerf) of the good,H2896 wherewith I saidH559(QalPerf) I would benefitH3190(HiphInf) them. [11] Now therefore go to, speakH559(QalImpv) to the menH376 of Judah,H3063 and to the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of Jerusalem,H3389 saying,H559(QalInf) Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord;H3068 Behold, I frameH3335(QalActPtc) evilH7451 against you, and deviseH2803(QalActPtc) a deviceH4284 against you: returnH7725(QalImpv) ye now every oneH376 from his evilH7451 way,H1870 and make your waysH1870 and your doingsH4611 good.H3190(HiphImpv) [12] And they said,H559(QalPerf) There is no hope:H2976(NiphPtc) but we will walkH3212(QalImpf) afterH310 our own devices,H4284 and we will every oneH376 doH6213(QalImpf) the imaginationH8307 of his evilH7451 heart.H3820 [13] Therefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord;H3068 AskH7592(QalImpv) ye now among the heathen,H1471 who hath heardH8085(QalPerf) such things: the virginH1330 of IsraelH3478 hath doneH6213(QalPerf) a veryH3966 horrible thing.H8186 [14] Will [a man] leaveH5800(QalImpf) the snowH7950 of LebanonH3844 [which cometh] from the rockH6697 of the field?H7704 [or] shall the coldH7119 flowingH5140(QalActPtc) watersH4325 that come from another placeH2114(QalPtc) be forsaken?H5428(NiphImpf) [15] Because my peopleH5971 hath forgottenH7911(QalPerf) me, they have burned incenseH6999(PielImpf) to vanity,H7723 and they have caused them to stumbleH3782(HiphImpf) in their waysH1870 [from] the ancientH5769 paths,H7635(Qere) to walkH3212(QalInf) in paths,H5410 [in] a wayH1870 not cast up;H5549(QalPasPtc) [16] To makeH7760(QalInf) their landH776 desolate,H8047 [and] a perpetualH5769 hissing;H8292(Qere) every one that passethH5674(QalActPtc) thereby shall be astonished,H8074(QalImpf) and wagH5110(HiphImpf) his head.H7218 [17] I will scatterH6327(HiphImpf) them as with an eastH6921 windH7307 beforeH6440 the enemy;H341(QalActPtc) I will shewH7200(QalImpf) them the back,H6203 and not the face,H6440 in the dayH3117 of their calamity.H343 [18] Then saidH559(QalImpf) they, Come,H3212(QalImpv) and let us deviseH2803(QalImpf) devicesH4284 against Jeremiah;H3414 for the lawH8451 shall not perishH6(QalImpf) from the priest,H3548 nor counselH6098 from the wise,H2450 nor the wordH1697 from the prophet.H5030 Come,H3212(QalImpv) and let us smiteH5221(HiphImpf) him with the tongue,H3956 and let us not give heedH7181(HiphImpf) to any of his words.H1697 [19] Give heedH7181(HiphImpv) to me, O Lord,H3068 and hearkenH8085(QalImpv) to the voiceH6963 of them that contendH3401 with me. [20] Shall evilH7451 be recompensedH7999(PualImpf) for good?H2896 for they have diggedH3738(QalPerf) a pitH7745 for my soul.H5315 RememberH2142(QalImpv) that I stoodH5975(QalInf) beforeH6440 thee to speakH1696(PielInf) goodH2896 for them, [and] to turn awayH7725(HiphInf) thy wrathH2534 from them. [21] Therefore deliver upH5414(QalImpv) their childrenH1121 to the famine,H7458 and pour outH5064(HiphImpv) their [blood] by the forceH3027 of the sword;H2719 and let their wivesH802 be bereavedH7909 of their children, and [be] widows;H490 and let their menH582 be putH2026(QalPasPtc) to death;H4194 [let] their young menH970 [be] slainH5221(HophPtc) by the swordH2719 in battle.H4421 [22] Let a cryH2201 be heardH8085(NiphImpf) from their houses,H1004 when thou shalt bringH935(HiphImpf) a troopH1416 suddenlyH6597 upon them: for they have diggedH3738(QalPerf) a pitH7745(Qere) to takeH3920(QalInf) me, and hidH2934(QalPerf) snaresH6341 for my feet.H7272 [23] Yet, Lord,H3068 thou knowestH3045(QalPerf) all their counselH6098 against me to slayH4194 [me]: forgiveH3722(PielImpf) not their iniquity,H5771 neither blot outH4229(HiphImpf) their sinH2403 from thy sight,H6440 but let them be overthrownH3782(HophPtc) beforeH6440 thee; dealH6213(QalImpv) [thus] with them in the timeH6256 of thine anger.H639
