[1] Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, house of Israel! [2] Yahweh says,
“Don’t learn the way of the nations,
and don’t be dismayed at the signs of the sky;
for the nations are dismayed at them.
[3] For the customs of the peoples are vanity;
for one cuts a tree out of the forest,
the work of the hands of the workman with the ax.
[4] They deck it with silver and with gold.
They fasten it with nails and with hammers,
so that it can’t move.
[5] They are like a palm tree, of turned work,
and don’t speak.
They must be carried,
because they can’t move.
Don’t be afraid of them;
for they can’t do evil,
neither is it in them to do good.”
[6] There is no one like you, Yahweh.
You are great,
and your name is great in might.
[7] Who shouldn’t fear you,
King of the nations?
For it belongs to you.
Because among all the wise men of the nations,
and in all their royal estate,
there is no one like you.
[8] But they are together brutish and foolish,
instructed by idols!
It is just wood.
[9] There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish,
and gold from Uphaz,
the work of the engraver and of the hands of the goldsmith.
Their clothing is blue and purple.
They are all the work of skillful men.
[10] But Yahweh is the true God.
He is the living God,
and an everlasting King.
At his wrath, the earth trembles.
The nations aren’t able to withstand his indignation. [11] “You shall say this to them: ‘The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.’ ”
[12] God has made the earth by his power.
He has established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens.
[13] When he utters his voice,
the waters in the heavens roar,
and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightnings for the rain,
and brings the wind out of his treasuries.
[14] Every man has become brutish and without knowledge.
Every goldsmith is disappointed by his engraved image;
for his molten image is falsehood,
and there is no breath in them.
[15] They are vanity, a work of delusion.
In the time of their visitation they will perish.
[16] The portion of Jacob is not like these;
for he is the maker of all things;
and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance.
Yahweh of Armies is his name.
[17] Gather up your wares out of the land,
you who live under siege.
[18] For Yahweh says,
“Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time,
and will distress them, that they may feel it.”
[19] Woe is me because of my injury!
My wound is serious;
but I said,
“Truly this is my grief, and I must bear it.”
[20] My tent has been destroyed,
and all my cords are broken.
My children have gone away from me, and they are no more.
There is no one to spread my tent any more,
to set up my curtains.
[21] For the shepherds have become brutish,
and have not inquired of Yahweh.
Therefore they have not prospered,
and all their flocks have scattered.
[22] The voice of news, behold, it comes,
and a great commotion out of the north country,
to make the cities of Judah a desolation,
a dwelling place of jackals.
[23] Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself.
It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
[24] Yahweh, correct me, but gently;
not in your anger,
lest you reduce me to nothing.
[25] Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you,
and on the families that don’t call on your name;
for they have devoured Jacob.
Yes, they have devoured him, consumed him,
and have laid waste his habitation.
“Don’t learn the way of the nations,
and don’t be dismayed at the signs of the sky;
for the nations are dismayed at them.

King James Version
[1] HearH8085(QalImpv) ye the wordH1697 which the LordH3068 speakethH1696(PielPerf) unto you, O houseH1004 of Israel:H3478 [2] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 LearnH3925(QalImpf) not the wayH1870 of the heathen,H1471 and be not dismayedH2865(NiphImpf) at the signsH226 of heaven;H8064 for the heathenH1471 are dismayedH2865(NiphImpf) at them.H1992 [3] For the customsH2708 of the peopleH5971 [are] vain:H1892 for [one] cuttethH3772(QalPerf) a treeH6086 out of the forest,H3293 the workH4639 of the handsH3027 of the workman,H2796 with the axe.H4621 [4] They deckH3302(PielImpf) it with silverH3701 and with gold;H2091 they fastenH2388(PielImpf) it with nailsH4548 and with hammers,H4717 that it moveH6328(HiphImpf) not. [5] They [are] uprightH4749 as the palm tree,H8560 but speakH1696(PielImpf) not: they must needsH5375(QalInf) be borne,H5375(NiphImpf) because they cannot go.H6805(QalImpf) Be not afraidH3372(QalImpf) of them; for they cannot do evil,H7489(HiphImpf) neither also [is it] in them to do good.H3190(HiphInf) [6] Forasmuch as [there is] none like unto thee, O Lord;H3068 thou [art] great,H1419 and thy nameH8034 [is] greatH1419 in might.H1369 [7] Who would not fearH3372(QalImpf) thee, O KingH4428 of nations?H1471 for to thee doth it appertain:H2969(QalPerf) forasmuch as among all the wiseH2450 [men] of the nations,H1471 and in all their kingdoms,H4438 [there is] none like unto thee. [8] But they are altogetherH259 brutishH1197(QalImpf) and foolish:H3688(QalImpf) the stockH6086 [is] a doctrineH4148 of vanities.H1892 [9] SilverH3701 spread into platesH7554(PualPtc) is broughtH935(HophImpf) from Tarshish,H8659 and goldH2091 from Uphaz,H210 the workH4639 of the workman,H2796 and of the handsH3027 of the founder:H6884(QalActPtc) blueH8504 and purpleH713 [is] their clothing:H3830 they [are] all the workH4639 of cunningH2450 [men]. [10] But the LordH3068 [is] the trueH571 God,H430 he [is] the livingH2416 God,H430 and an everlastingH5769 king:H4428 at his wrathH7110 the earthH776 shall tremble,H7493(QalImpf) and the nationsH1471 shall not be able to abideH3557(HiphImpf) his indignation.H2195 [11] ThusH1836 shall ye sayH560(PealImpf) unto them, The godsH426 that have notH3809 madeH5648(PealPerf) the heavensH8065 and the earth,H778 [even] they shall perishH7(PealImpf) from the earth,H772 and from underH8460 theseH429 heavens.H8065 [12] He hath madeH6213(QalActPtc) the earthH776 by his power,H3581 he hath establishedH3559(HiphPtc) the worldH8398 by his wisdom,H2451 and hath stretched outH5186(QalPerf) the heavensH8064 by his discretion.H8394 [13] When he utterethH5414(QalInf) his voice,H6963 [there is] a multitudeH1995 of watersH4325 in the heavens,H8064 and he causeth the vapoursH5387 to ascendH5927(HiphImpf) from the endsH7097 of the earth;H776 he makethH6213(QalPerf) lightningsH1300 with rain,H4306 and bringeth forthH3318(HiphImpf) the windH7307 out of his treasures.H214 [14] Every manH120 is brutishH1197(NiphPerf) in [his] knowledge:H1847 every founderH6884(QalActPtc) is confoundedH3001(HiphPerf) by the graven image:H6459 for his molten imageH5262 [is] falsehood,H8267 and [there is] no breathH7307 in them. [15] They [are] vanity,H1892 [and] the workH4639 of errors:H8595 in the timeH6256 of their visitationH6486 they shall perish.H6(QalImpf) [16] The portionH2506 of JacobH3290 [is] not like them: for he [is] the formerH3335(QalActPtc) of all [things]; and IsraelH3478 [is] the rodH7626 of his inheritance:H5159 The LordH3068 of hostsH6635 [is] his name.H8034 [17] Gather upH622(QalImpv) thy waresH3666 out of the land,H776 O inhabitantH3427(QalActPtc) of the fortress.H4692 [18] For thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 Behold, I will slingH7049(QalActPtc) out the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of the landH776 at this once,H6471 and will distressH6887(HiphPerf) them, that they may findH4672(QalImpf) [it so]. [19] WoeH188 is me for my hurt!H7667 my woundH4347 is grievous:H2470(NiphPtc) but I said,H559(QalPerf) TrulyH389 this [is] a grief,H2483 and I must bearH5375(QalImpf) it. [20] My tabernacleH168 is spoiled,H7703(PualPerf) and all my cordsH4340 are broken:H5423(NiphPerf) my childrenH1121 are gone forthH3318(QalPerf) of me, and they [are] not: [there is] none to stretch forthH5186(QalActPtc) my tentH168 any more, and to set upH6965(HiphPtc) my curtains.H3407 [21] For the pastorsH7462(QalActPtc) are become brutish,H1197(NiphPerf) and have not soughtH1875(QalPerf) the Lord:H3068 therefore they shall not prosper,H7919(HiphPerf) and all their flocksH4830 shall be scattered.H6327(NiphPerf) [22] Behold, the noiseH6963 of the bruitH8052 is come,H935(QalActPtc) and a greatH1419 commotionH7494 out of the northH6828 country,H776 to makeH7760(QalInf) the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063 desolate,H8077 [and] a denH4583 of dragons.H8577 [23] O Lord,H3068 I knowH3045(QalPerf) that the wayH1870 of manH120 [is] not in himself: [it is] not in manH376 that walkethH1980(QalActPtc) to directH3559(HiphInf) his steps.H6806 [24] O Lord,H3068 correctH3256(PielImpv) me, but with judgment;H4941 not in thine anger,H639 lest thou bring me to nothing.H4591(HiphImpf) [25] Pour outH8210(QalImpv) thy furyH2534 upon the heathenH1471 that knowH3045(QalPerf) thee not, and upon the familiesH4940 that callH7121(QalPerf) not on thy name:H8034 for they have eaten upH398(QalPerf) Jacob,H3290 and devouredH398(QalPerf) him, and consumedH3615(PielImpf) him, and have made his habitationH5116 desolate.H8074(HiphPerf)
