[1] This is Yahweh’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:
[2] “Judah mourns,
and its gates languish.
They sit in black on the ground.
The cry of Jerusalem goes up.
[3] Their nobles send their little ones to the waters.
They come to the cisterns,
and find no water.
They return with their vessels empty.
They are disappointed and confounded,
and cover their heads.
[4] Because of the ground which is cracked,
because no rain has been in the land,
the plowmen are disappointed.
They cover their heads.
[5] Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young,
because there is no grass.
[6] The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights.
They pant for air like jackals.
Their eyes fail,
because there is no vegetation.
[7] Though our iniquities testify against us,
work for your name’s sake, Yahweh;
for our rebellions are many.
We have sinned against you.
[8] You hope of Israel,
its Savior in the time of trouble,
why should you be as a foreigner in the land,
and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?
[9] Why should you be like a scared man,
as a mighty man who can’t save?
Yet you, Yahweh, are in the middle of us,
and we are called by your name.
Don’t leave us.
[10] Yahweh says to this people:
“Even so they have loved to wander.
They have not restrained their feet.
Therefore Yahweh does not accept them.
Now he will remember their iniquity,
and punish them for their sins.”
[11] Yahweh said to me, “Don’t pray for this people for their good. [12] When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.” [13] Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, the prophets tell them, ‘You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’ ” [14] Then Yahweh said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I didn’t send them. I didn’t command them. I didn’t speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart. [15] Therefore Yahweh says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn’t send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine. [16] The people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. They will have no one to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour their wickedness on them. [17] “You shall say this word to them:
“ ‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,
and let them not cease;
for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach,
with a very grievous wound.
[18] If I go out into the field,
then behold, the slain with the sword!
If I enter into the city,
then behold, those who are sick with famine!
For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land,
and have no knowledge.’ ”
[19] Have you utterly rejected Judah?
Has your soul loathed Zion?
Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us?
We looked for peace, but no good came;
and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!
[20] We acknowledge, Yahweh, our wickedness,
and the iniquity of our fathers;
for we have sinned against you.
[21] Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake.
Do not disgrace the throne of your glory.
Remember, and don’t break your covenant with us.
[22] Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain?
Or can the sky give showers?
Aren’t you he, Yahweh our God?
Therefore we will wait for you;
for you have made all these things.
King James Version
[1] The wordH1697 of the LordH3068 that came to JeremiahH3414 concerningH1697 the dearth.H1226 [2] JudahH3063 mourneth,H56(QalPerf) and the gatesH8179 thereof languish;H535(PulaPerf) they are blackH6937(QalPerf) unto the ground;H776 and the cryH6682 of JerusalemH3389 is gone up.H5927(QalPerf) [3] And their noblesH117 have sentH7971(QalPerf) their little onesH6810 to the waters:H4325 they cameH935(QalPerf) to the pits,H1356(Ketiv) [and] foundH4672(QalPerf) no water;H4325 they returnedH7725(QalPerf) with their vesselsH3627 empty;H7387 they were ashamedH954(QalPerf) and confounded,H3637(HophPerf) and coveredH2645(QalPerf) their heads.H7218 [4] Because the groundH127 is chapt,H2865(QalPerf) for there was no rainH1653 in the earth,H776 the plowmenH406 were ashamed,H954(QalPerf) they coveredH2645(QalPerf) their heads.H7218 [5] Yea, the hindH365 also calvedH3205(QalPerf) in the field,H7704 and forsookH5800(QalInf) [it], because there was no grass.H1877 [6] And the wild assesH6501 did standH5975(QalPerf) in the high places,H8205 they snuffed upH7602(QalPerf) the windH7307 like dragons;H8577 their eyesH5869 did fail,H3615(QalPerf) because [there was] no grass.H6212 [7] O Lord,H3068 though our iniquitiesH5771 testifyH6030(QalPerf) against us, doH6213(QalImpv) thou [it] for thy name’sH8034 sake: for our backslidingsH4878 are many;H7231(QalPerf) we have sinnedH2398(QalPerf) against thee. [8] O the hopeH4723 of Israel,H3478 the saviourH3467(HiphPtc) thereof in timeH6256 of trouble,H6869 why shouldest thou be as a strangerH1616 in the land,H776 and as a wayfaring manH732(QalActPtc) [that] turneth asideH5186(QalPerf) to tarry for a night?H3885(QalInf) [9] Why shouldest thou be as a manH376 astonied,H1724(NiphPtc) as a mighty manH1368 [that] cannotH3201(QalImpf) save?H3467(HiphInf) yet thou, O Lord,H3068 [art] in the midstH7130 of us, and we are calledH7121(NiphPerf) by thy name;H8034 leaveH3240(HiphImpf) us not. [10] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 unto this people,H5971 Thus have they lovedH157(QalPerf) to wander,H5128(QalInf) they have not refrainedH2820(QalPerf) their feet,H7272 therefore the LordH3068 doth not acceptH7521(QalPerf) them; he will now rememberH2142(QalImpf) their iniquity,H5771 and visitH6485(QalImpf) their sins.H2403 [11] Then saidH559(QalImpf) the LordH3068 unto me, PrayH6419(HithImpf) not for this peopleH5971 for [their] good.H2896 [12] When they fast,H6684(QalImpf) I will not hearH8085(QalActPtc) their cry;H7440 and when they offerH5927(HiphImpf) burnt offeringH5930 and an oblation,H4503 I will not acceptH7521(QalActPtc) them: but I will consumeH3615(PielPtc) them by the sword,H2719 and by the famine,H7458 and by the pestilence.H1698 [13] Then saidH559(QalImpf) I, Ah,H162 LordH136 God!H3069 behold, the prophetsH5030 sayH559(QalActPtc) unto them, Ye shall not seeH7200(QalImpf) the sword,H2719 neither shall ye have famine;H7458 but I will giveH5414(QalImpf) you assuredH571 peaceH7965 in this place.H4725 [14] Then the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto me, The prophetsH5030 prophesyH5012(NiphPtc) liesH8267 in my name:H8034 I sentH7971(QalPerf) them not, neither have I commandedH6680(PielPerf) them, neither spakeH1696(PielPerf) unto them: they prophesyH5012(HithPtc) unto you a falseH8267 visionH2377 and divination,H7081 and a thing of nought,H457(Qere) and the deceitH8649 of their heart.H3820 [15] Therefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 concerning the prophetsH5030 that prophesyH5012(NiphPtc) in my name,H8034 and I sentH7971(QalPerf) them not, yet they say,H559(QalActPtc) SwordH2719 and famineH7458 shall not be in this land;H776 By swordH2719 and famineH7458 shall those prophetsH5030 be consumed.H8552(NiphImpf) [16] And the peopleH5971 to whom they prophesyH5012(NiphPtc) shall be cast outH7993(HophPtc) in the streetsH2351 of JerusalemH3389 becauseH6440 of the famineH7458 and the sword;H2719 and they shall have none to buryH6912(PielPtc) them,H1992 them, their wives,H802 nor their sons,H1121 nor their daughters:H1323 for I will pourH8210(QalPerf) their wickednessH7451 upon them. [17] Therefore thou shalt sayH559(QalPerf) this wordH1697 unto them; Let mine eyesH5869 run downH3381(QalImpf) with tearsH1832 nightH3915 and day,H3119 and let them not cease:H1820(QalImpf) for the virginH1330 daughterH1323 of my peopleH5971 is brokenH7665(NiphPerf) with a greatH1419 breach,H7667 with a veryH3966 grievousH2470(NiphPtc) blow.H4347 [18] If I go forthH3318(QalPerf) into the field,H7704 then behold the slainH2491 with the sword!H2719 and if I enterH935(QalPerf) into the city,H5892 then behold them that are sickH8463 with famine!H7458 yea, both the prophetH5030 and the priestH3548 go aboutH5503(QalPerf) into a landH776 that they knowH3045(QalPerf) not. [19] Hast thou utterlyH3988(QalInf) rejectedH3988(QalPerf) Judah?H3063 hath thy soulH5315 lothedH1602(QalPerf) Zion?H6726 why hast thou smittenH5221(HiphPerf) us, and [there is] no healingH4832 for us? we lookedH6960(PielInf) for peace,H7965 and [there is] no good;H2896 and for the timeH6256 of healing,H4832 and behold trouble!H1205 [20] We acknowledge,H3045(QalPerf) O Lord,H3068 our wickedness,H7562 [and] the iniquityH5771 of our fathers:H1 for we have sinnedH2398(QalPerf) against thee. [21] Do not abhorH5006(QalImpf) [us], for thy name’sH8034 sake, do not disgraceH5034(PielImpf) the throneH3678 of thy glory:H3519 remember,H2142(QalImpv) breakH6565(HiphImpf) not thy covenantH1285 with us. [22] Are thereH3426 [any] among the vanitiesH1892 of the GentilesH1471 that can cause rain?H1652(HiphPtc) or can the heavensH8064 giveH5414(QalImpf) showers?H7241 [art] not thou he, O LordH3068 our God?H430 therefore we will waitH6960(PielImpf) upon thee: for thou hast madeH6213(QalPerf) all these [things].
