[1] “Run back and forth through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its wide places, if you can find a man, if there is anyone who does justly, who seeks truth, then I will pardon her. [2] Though they say, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ surely they swear falsely.” [3] O Yahweh, don’t your eyes look on truth? You have stricken them, but they were not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return. [4] Then I said, “Surely these are poor. They are foolish; for they don’t know Yahweh’s way, nor the law of their God. [5] I will go to the great men and will speak to them, for they know the way of Yahweh, and the law of their God.” But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. [6] Therefore a lion out of the forest will kill them. A wolf of the evenings will destroy them. A leopard will watch against their cities. Everyone who goes out there will be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many and their backsliding has increased. [7] “How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me, and sworn by what are no gods. When I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the prostitutes’ houses. [8] They were as fed horses roaming at large. Everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife. [9] Shouldn’t I punish them for these things?” says Yahweh. “Shouldn’t my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? [10] “Go up on her walls, and destroy, but don’t make a full end. Take away her branches, for they are not Yahweh’s. [11] For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me,” says Yahweh. [12] They have denied Yahweh, and said, “It is not he. Evil won’t come on us. We won’t see sword or famine. [13] The prophets will become wind, and the word is not in them. Thus it will be done to them.” [14] Therefore Yahweh, the God of Armies says, “Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it will devour them. [15] Behold, I will bring a nation on you from far away, house of Israel,” says Yahweh. “It is a mighty nation. It is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you don’t know and don’t understand what they say. [16] Their quiver is an open tomb. They are all mighty men. [17] They will eat up your harvest and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat. They will eat up your flocks and your herds. They will eat up your vines and your fig trees. They will beat down your fortified cities in which you trust with the sword. [18] “But even in those days,” says Yahweh, “I will not make a full end of you. [19] It will happen when you say, ‘Why has Yahweh our God done all these things to us?’ Then you shall say to them, ‘Just as you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’ [20] “Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, [21] ‘Hear this now, foolish people without understanding, who have eyes, and don’t see, who have ears, and don’t hear: [22] Don’t you fear me?’ says Yahweh; ‘Won’t you tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it can’t pass it? Though its waves toss themselves, yet they can’t prevail. Though they roar, they still can’t pass over it.’ [23] “But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart. They have revolted and gone. [24] They don’t say in their heart, ‘Let’s now fear Yahweh our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season, who preserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.’ [25] “Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good from you. [26] For wicked men are found among my people. They watch, as fowlers lie in wait. They set a trap. They catch men. [27] As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit. Therefore they have become great, and grew rich. [28] They have grown fat. They shine; yes, they excel in deeds of wickedness. They don’t plead the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and they don’t defend the rights of the needy. [29] “Shouldn’t I punish for these things?” says Yahweh. “Shouldn’t my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? [30] “An astonishing and horrible thing has happened in the land. [31] The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will you do in the end of it?
King James Version
[1] Run ye to and froH7751(PoleImpv) through the streetsH2351 of Jerusalem,H3389 and seeH7200(QalImpv) now, and know,H3045(QalImpv) and seekH1245(PielImpv) in the broad placesH7339 thereof, if ye can findH4672(QalImpf) a man,H376 if there beH3426 [any] that executethH6213(QalActPtc) judgment,H4941 that seekethH1245(PielPtc) the truth;H530 and I will pardonH5545(QalImpf) it. [2] And though they say,H559(QalImpf) The LordH3068 liveth;H2416 surely they swearH7650(NiphImpf) falsely.H8267 [3] O Lord,H3068 [are] not thine eyesH5869 upon the truth?H530 thou hast strickenH5221(HiphPerf) them, but they have not grieved;H2342(QalPerf) thou hast consumedH3615(PielPerf) them, [but] they have refusedH3985(PielPerf) to receiveH3947(QalInf) correction:H4148 they have made their facesH6440 harderH2388(PielPerf) than a rock;H5553 they have refusedH3985(PielPerf) to return.H7725(QalInf) [4] Therefore I said,H559(QalPerf) Surely these [are] poor;H1800 they are foolish:H2973(NiphPerf) for they knowH3045(QalPerf) not the wayH1870 of the Lord,H3068 [nor] the judgmentH4941 of their God.H430 [5] I will getH3212(QalImpf) me unto the great men,H1419 and will speakH1696(PielImpf) unto them; for they have knownH3045(QalPerf) the wayH1870 of the Lord,H3068 [and] the judgmentH4941 of their God:H430 but these have altogetherH3162 brokenH7665(QalPerf) the yoke,H5923 [and] burstH5423(PielPerf) the bonds.H4147 [6] Wherefore a lionH738 out of the forestH3293 shall slayH5221(HiphPerf) them, [and] a wolfH2061 of the eveningsH6160 shall spoilH7703(QalImpf) them, a leopardH5246 shall watchH8245(QalActPtc) over their cities:H5892 every one that goeth outH3318(QalActPtc) thence shallH2007 be torn in pieces:H2963(NiphImpf) because their transgressionsH6588 are many,H7231(QalPerf) [and] their backslidingsH4878 are increased.H6105(QalPerf) [7] HowH335 shall I pardonH5545(QalImpf) thee for this?H2063 thy childrenH1121 have forsakenH5800(QalPerf) me, and swornH7650(NiphImpf) by [them that are] noH3808 gods:H430 when I had fed them to the full,H7650(HiphImpf) they then committed adultery,H5003(QalImpf) and assembled themselves by troopsH1413(HipoImpf) in the harlots’H2181(QalActPtc) houses.H1004 [8] They were [as] fedH2109(HophPtc) horsesH5483 in the morning:H7904(HiphPtc) every oneH376 neighedH6670(QalImpf) after his neighbour’sH7453 wife.H802 [9] Shall I not visitH6485(QalImpf) for these [things]? saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord:H3068 and shall not my soulH5315 be avengedH5358(HithImpf) on such a nationH1471 as this? [10] Go ye upH5927(QalImpv) upon her walls,H8284 and destroy;H7843(PielImpv) but makeH6213(QalImpf) not a full end:H3617 take awayH5493(HiphImpv) her battlements;H5189 for they [are] not the Lord’s.H3068 [11] For the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 and the houseH1004 of JudahH3063 have dealt veryH898(QalInf) treacherouslyH898(QalPerf) against me, saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord.H3068 [12] They have beliedH3584(PielPerf) the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) [It is] not he; neither shall evilH7451 comeH935(QalImpf) upon us; neither shall we seeH7200(QalImpf) swordH2719 nor famine:H7458 [13] And the prophetsH5030 shall become wind,H7307 and the wordH1696(PielInf) [is] not in them: thus shall it be doneH6213(NiphImpf) unto them. [14] Wherefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH3068 GodH430 of hosts,H6635 Because ye speakH1696(PielInf) this word,H1697 behold, I will makeH5414(QalActPtc) my wordsH1697 in thy mouthH6310 fire,H784 and this peopleH5971 wood,H6086 and it shall devourH398(QalPerf) them. [15] Lo, I will bringH935(HiphPtc) a nationH1471 upon you from far,H4801 O houseH1004 of Israel,H3478 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord:H3068 it [is] a mightyH386 nation,H1471 it [is] an ancientH5769 nation,H1471 a nationH1471 whose languageH3956 thou knowestH3045(QalImpf) not, neither understandestH8085(QalImpf) what they say.H1696(PielImpf) [16] Their quiverH827 [is] as an openH6605(QalPasPtc) sepulchre,H6913 they [are] all mighty men.H1368 [17] And they shall eat upH398(QalPerf) thine harvest,H7105 and thy bread,H3899 [which] thy sonsH1121 and thy daughtersH1323 should eat:H398(QalImpf) they shall eat upH398(QalImpf) thy flocksH6629 and thine herds:H1241 they shall eat upH398(QalImpf) thy vinesH1612 and thy fig trees:H8384 they shall impoverishH7567(PoelImpf) thy fencedH4013 cities,H5892 wherein thouH2007 trustedst,H982(QalActPtc) with the sword.H2719 [18] Nevertheless in those days,H3117 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord,H3068 I will not makeH6213(QalImpf) a full endH3617 with you. [19] And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say,H559(QalImpf) WhereforeH8478 doethH6213(QalPerf) the LordH3068 our GodH430 all these [things] unto us? then shalt thou answerH559(QalPerf) them, Like as ye have forsakenH5800(QalPerf) me, and servedH5647(QalImpf) strangeH5236 godsH430 in your land,H776 so shall ye serveH5647(QalImpf) strangersH2114(QalPtc) in a landH776 [that is] not yours. [20] DeclareH5046(HiphImpv) this in the houseH1004 of Jacob,H3290 and publishH8085(HiphImpv) it in Judah,H3063 saying,H559(QalInf) [21] HearH8085(QalImpv) now this, O foolishH5530 people,H5971 and without understanding;H3820 which have eyes,H5869 and seeH7200(QalImpf) not; which have ears,H241 and hearH8085(QalImpf) not: [22] FearH3372(QalImpf) ye not me? saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord:H3068 will ye not trembleH2342(QalImpf) at my presence,H6440 which have placedH7760(QalPerf) the sandH2344 [for] the boundH1366 of the seaH3220 by a perpetualH5769 decree,H2706 that it cannot passH5674(QalImpf) it: and though the wavesH1530 thereof tossH1607(HithImpf) themselves, yet can they not prevail;H3201(QalImpf) though they roar,H1993(QalPerf) yet can they not pass overH5674(QalImpf) it? [23] But this peopleH5971 hath a revoltingH5637(QalActPtc) and a rebelliousH4784(QalActPtc) heart;H3820 they are revoltedH5493(QalPerf) and gone.H3212(QalImpf) [24] Neither sayH559(QalPerf) they in their heart,H3824 Let us now fearH3372(QalImpf) the LordH3068 our God,H430 that givethH5414(QalActPtc) rain,H1653 both the formerH3138 and the latter,H4456 in his season:H6256 he reservethH8104(QalImpf) unto us the appointedH2708 weeksH7620 of the harvest.H7105 [25] Your iniquitiesH5771 have turned awayH5186(HiphPerf) these [things], and your sinsH2403 have withholdenH4513(QalPerf) goodH2896 [things] from you. [26] For among my peopleH5971 are foundH4672(NiphPerf) wickedH7563 [men]: they lay wait,H7789(QalImpf) as he that settethH7918(QalInf) snares;H3353 they setH5324(HiphPerf) a trap,H4889 they catchH3920(QalImpf) men.H582 [27] As a cageH3619 is fullH4392 of birds,H5775 so [are] their housesH1004 fullH4392 of deceit:H4820 therefore they are become great,H1431(QalPerf) and waxen rich.H6238(HiphImpf) [28] They are waxen fat,H8080(QalPerf) they shine:H6245(QalPerf) yea, they overpassH5674(QalPerf) the deedsH1697 of the wicked:H7451 they judgeH1777(QalPerf) not the cause,H1779 the cause of the fatherless,H3490 yet they prosper;H6743(HiphImpf) and the rightH4941 of the needyH34 do they not judge.H8199(QalPerf) [29] Shall I not visitH6485(QalImpf) for these [things]? saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord:H3068 shall not my soulH5315 be avengedH5358(HithImpf) on such a nationH1471 as this? [30] A wonderfulH8047 and horrible thingH8186 is committedH1961(NiphPerf) in the land;H776 [31] The prophetsH5030 prophesyH5012(NiphPerf) falsely,H8267 and the priestsH3548 bear ruleH7287(QalImpf) by their means;H3027 and my peopleH5971 loveH157(QalPerf) [to have it] so: and what will ye doH6213(QalImpf) in the endH319 thereof?
