[1] Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned as king instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. [2] But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, listened to Yahweh’s words, which he spoke by the prophet Jeremiah. [3] Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “Pray now to Yahweh our God for us.” [4] Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people, for they had not put him into prison. [5] Pharaoh’s army had come out of Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they withdrew from Jerusalem. [6] Then Yahweh’s word came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, [7] “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘You shall tell the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me: “Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come out to help you, will return to Egypt into their own land. [8] The Chaldeans will come again, and fight against this city. They will take it and burn it with fire.” ’ [9] “Yahweh says, ‘Don’t deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us;” for they will not depart. [10] For though you had struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and only wounded men remained among them, they would each rise up in his tent and burn this city with fire.’ ” [11] When the army of the Chaldeans had withdrawn from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army, [12] then Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to receive his portion there, in the middle of the people. [13] When he was in Benjamin’s gate, a captain of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!” [14] Then Jeremiah said, “That is false! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.”But he didn’t listen to him; so Irijah seized Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. [15] The princes were angry with Jeremiah, and struck him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison. [16] When Jeremiah had come into the dungeon house and into the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days, [17] then Zedekiah the king sent and had him brought out. The king asked him secretly in his house, “Is there any word from Yahweh?”Jeremiah said, “There is.” He also said, “You will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.” [18] Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? [19] Now where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you, nor against this land’? [20] Now please hear, my lord the king: please let my supplication be presented before you, that you not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.” [21] Then Zedekiah the king commanded, and they committed Jeremiah into the court of the guard. They gave him daily a loaf of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

[1] And kingH4428 ZedekiahH6667 the sonH1121 of JosiahH2977 reignedH4427(QalImpf) instead of ConiahH3659 the sonH1121 of Jehoiakim,H3079 whom NebuchadrezzarH5019 kingH4428 of BabylonH894 made kingH4427(HiphPerf) in the landH776 of Judah.H3063 [2] But neither he, nor his servants,H5650 nor the peopleH5971 of the land,H776 did hearkenH8085(QalPerf) unto the wordsH1697 of the Lord,H3068 which he spakeH1696(PielPerf) byH3027 the prophetH5030 Jeremiah.H3414 [3] And ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 sentH7971(QalImpf) JehucalH3081 the sonH1121 of ShelemiahH8018 and ZephaniahH6846 the sonH1121 of MaaseiahH4641 the priestH3548 to the prophetH5030 Jeremiah,H3414 saying,H559(QalInf) PrayH6419(HithImpv) now unto the LordH3068 our GodH430 for us. [4] Now JeremiahH3414 came inH935(QalPerf) and went outH3318(QalActPtc) amongH8432 the people:H5971 for they had not putH5414(QalPerf) him into prison.H1004 [5] Then Pharaoh’sH6547 armyH2428 was come forthH3318(QalPerf) out of Egypt:H4714 and when the ChaldeansH3778 that besiegedH6696(QalActPtc) JerusalemH3389 heardH8085(QalImpf) tidingsH8088 of them, they departedH5927(NiphImpf) from Jerusalem.H3389 [6] Then came the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 unto the prophetH5030 Jeremiah,H3414 saying,H559(QalInf) [7] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord,H3068 the GodH430 of Israel;H3478 Thus shall ye sayH559(QalImpf) to the kingH4428 of Judah,H3063 that sentH7971(QalActPtc) you unto me to enquireH1875(QalInf) of me; Behold, Pharaoh’sH6547 army,H2428 which is come forthH3318(QalActPtc) to helpH5833 you, shall returnH7725(QalPerf) to EgyptH4714 into their own land.H776 [8] And the ChaldeansH3778 shall come again,H7725(QalPerf) and fightH3898(NiphPerf) against this city,H5892 and takeH3920(QalPerf) it, and burnH8313(QalPerf) it with fire.H784 [9] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the Lord;H3068 DeceiveH5377(HiphImpf) not yourselves,H5315 saying,H559(QalInf) The ChaldeansH3778 shall surelyH1980(QalInf) departH3212(QalImpf) from us: for they shall not depart.H3212(QalImpf) [10] For though ye had smittenH5221(HiphPerf) the whole armyH2428 of the ChaldeansH3778 that fightH3898(NiphPtc) against you, and there remainedH7604(NiphPerf) [but] woundedH1856(PualPtc) menH582 among them, [yet] should they rise upH6965(QalImpf) every manH376 in his tent,H168 and burnH8313(QalPerf) this cityH5892 with fire.H784 [11] And it came to pass, that when the armyH2428 of the ChaldeansH3778 was broken upH5927(NiphInf) from JerusalemH3389 for fearH6440 of Pharaoh’sH6547 army,H2428 [12] Then JeremiahH3414 went forthH3318(QalImpf) out of JerusalemH3389 to goH3212(QalInf) into the landH776 of Benjamin,H1144 to separateH2505(HiphInf) himself thence in the midstH8432 of the people.H5971 [13] And when he was in the gateH8179 of Benjamin,H1144 a captainH1167 of the wardH6488 [was] there, whose nameH8034 [was] Irijah,H3376 the sonH1121 of Shelemiah,H8018 the sonH1121 of Hananiah;H2608 and he tookH8610(QalImpf) JeremiahH3414 the prophet,H5030 saying,H559(QalInf) Thou fallest awayH5307(QalActPtc) to the Chaldeans.H3778 [14] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Jeremiah,H3414 [It is] false;H8267 I fall not awayH5307(QalActPtc) to the Chaldeans.H3778 But he hearkenedH8085(QalPerf) not to him: so IrijahH3376 tookH8610(QalImpf) Jeremiah,H3414 and broughtH935(HiphImpf) him to the princes.H8269 [15] Wherefore the princesH8269 were wrothH7107(QalImpf) with Jeremiah,H3414 and smoteH5221(HiphPerf) him, and putH5414(QalPerf) him in prisonH612 in the houseH1004 of JonathanH3083 the scribe:H5608(QalActPtc) for they had madeH6213(QalPerf) that the prison.H3608 [16] When JeremiahH3414 was enteredH935(QalPerf) into the dungeon,H1004 and into the cabins,H2588 and JeremiahH3414 had remainedH3427(QalImpf) there manyH7227 days;H3117 [17] Then ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 sent,H7971(QalImpf) and took him out:H3947(QalImpf) and the kingH4428 askedH7592(QalImpf) him secretlyH5643 in his house,H1004 and said,H559(QalImpf) Is there [any] wordH1697 from the Lord?H3068 And JeremiahH3414 said,H559(QalImpf) There is:H3426 for, saidH559(QalImpf) he, thou shalt be deliveredH5414(NiphImpf) into the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of Babylon.H894 [18] Moreover JeremiahH3414 saidH559(QalImpf) unto kingH4428 Zedekiah,H6667 What have I offendedH2398(QalPerf) against thee, or against thy servants,H5650 or against this people,H5971 that ye have putH5414(QalPerf) me in prison?H1004 [19] Where [are] nowH346 your prophetsH5030 which prophesiedH5012(NiphPerf) unto you, saying,H559(QalInf) The kingH4428 of BabylonH894 shall not comeH935(QalImpf) against you, nor against this land?H776 [20] Therefore hearH8085(QalImpv) now, I pray thee, O my lordH113 the king:H4428 let my supplication,H8467 I pray thee, be acceptedH5307(QalImpf) beforeH6440 thee; that thou cause me not to returnH7725(HiphImpf) to the houseH1004 of JonathanH3083 the scribe,H5608(QalActPtc) lest I dieH4191(QalImpf) there. [21] Then ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 commandedH6680(PielImpf) that they should commitH6485(HiphImpf) JeremiahH3414 into the courtH2691 of the prison,H4307 and that they should giveH5414(QalInf) him dailyH3117 a pieceH3603 of breadH3899 out of the bakers’H644(QalActPtc) street,H2351 until all the breadH3899 in the cityH5892 were spent.H8552(QalInf) Thus JeremiahH3414 remainedH3427(QalImpf) in the courtH2691 of the prison.H4307
