[1] Abraham traveled from there toward the land of the South, and lived between Kadesh and Shur. He lived as a foreigner in Gerar. [2] Abraham said about Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. [3] But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man, because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man’s wife.” [4] Now Abimelech had not come near her. He said, “Lord, will you kill even a righteous nation? [5] Didn’t he tell me, ‘She is my sister’? She, even she herself, said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands.” [6] God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also withheld you from sinning against me. Therefore I didn’t allow you to touch her. [7] Now therefore, restore the man’s wife. For he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live. If you don’t restore her, know for sure that you will die, you, and all who are yours.” [8] Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ear. The men were very scared. [9] Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, “What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done!” [10] Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you have done this thing?” [11] Abraham said, “Because I thought, ‘Surely the fear of God is not in this place. They will kill me for my wife’s sake.’ [12] Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. [13] When God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘This is your kindness which you shall show to me. Everywhere that we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ” [14] Abimelech took sheep and cattle, male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah, his wife, to him. [15] Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you. Dwell where it pleases you.” [16] To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is for you a covering of the eyes to all that are with you. In front of all you are vindicated.” [17] Abraham prayed to God. So God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants, and they bore children. [18] For Yahweh had closed up tight all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
King James Version
[1] And AbrahamH85 journeyedH5265(QalImpf) from thence toward the southH5045 country,H776 and dwelledH3427(QalImpf) between KadeshH6946 and Shur,H7793 and sojournedH1481(QalImpf) in Gerar.H1642 [2] And AbrahamH85 saidH559(QalImpf) ofH413 SarahH8283 his wife,H802 She [is] my sister:H269 and AbimelechH40 kingH4428 of GerarH1642 sent,H7971(QalImpf) and tookH3947(QalImpf) Sarah.H8283 [3] But GodH430 cameH935(QalImpf) to AbimelechH40 in a dreamH2472 by night,H3915 and saidH559(QalImpf) to him, Behold, thou [art but] a dead man,H4191(QalPtc) for the womanH802 which thou hast taken;H3947(QalPerf) for she [is] a man’sH1167 wife.H1166(QalPasPtc) [4] But AbimelechH40 had not come nearH7126(QalPerf) her: and he said,H559(QalImpf) Lord,H136 wilt thou slayH2026(QalImpf) also a righteousH6662 nation?H1471 [5] SaidH559(QalPerf) he not unto me, SheH1931 [is] my sister?H269 and she,H1931 evenH1571 sheH1931 herself said,H559(QalPerf) He [is] my brother:H251 in the integrityH8537 of my heartH3824 and innocencyH5356 of my handsH3709 have I doneH6213(QalPerf) this. [6] And GodH430 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him in a dream,H2472 Yea,H1571 I knowH3045(QalPerf) that thou didstH6213(QalPerf) this in the integrityH8537 of thy heart;H3824 for I also withheldH2820(QalImpf) thee from sinningH2398(QalInf) against me: therefore sufferedH5414(QalPerf) I thee not to touchH5060(QalInf) her. [7] Now therefore restoreH7725(HiphImpv) the manH376 [his] wife;H802 for he [is] a prophet,H5030 and he shall prayH6419(HithImpf) for thee,H1157 and thou shalt live:H2421(QalImpv) and if thou restoreH7725(HiphPtc) [her] not, knowH3045(QalImpv) thou that thou shalt surelyH4191(QalInf) die,H4191(QalImpf) thou, and all that [are] thine. [8] Therefore AbimelechH40 rose earlyH7925(HiphImpf) in the morning,H1242 and calledH7121(QalImpf) all his servants,H5650 and toldH1696(PielImpf) all these thingsH1697 in their ears:H241 and the menH582 were soreH3966 afraid.H3372(QalImpf) [9] Then AbimelechH40 calledH7121(QalImpf) Abraham,H85 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, What hast thou doneH6213(QalPerf) unto us? and what have I offendedH2398(QalPerf) thee, that thou hast broughtH935(HiphPerf) on me and on my kingdomH4467 a greatH1419 sin?H2401 thou hast doneH6213(QalPerf) deedsH4639 unto me that ought not to be done.H6213(NiphImpf) [10] And AbimelechH40 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Abraham,H85 WhatH4100 sawest thou,H7200(QalPerf) that thou hast doneH6213(QalPerf) this thing?H1697 [11] And AbrahamH85 said,H559(QalImpf) Because I thought,H559(QalPerf) SurelyH7535 the fearH3374 of GodH430 [is] not in this place;H4725 and they will slay meH2026(QalPerf) for my wife’sH802 sake.H1697 [12] And yet indeedH546 [she is] my sister;H269 she [is] the daughterH1323 of my father,H1 but not the daughterH1323 of my mother;H517 and she became my wife.H802 [13] And it came to pass, when GodH430 caused me to wanderH8582(HiphPerf) from my father’sH1 house,H1004 that I saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, This [is] thy kindnessH2617 which thou shalt shewH6213(QalImpf) unto me; at every placeH4725 whither we shall come,H935(QalImpf) sayH559(QalImpv) of me, He [is] my brother.H251 [14] And AbimelechH40 tookH3947(QalImpf) sheep,H6629 and oxen,H1241 and menservants,H5650 and womenservants,H8198 and gaveH5414(QalImpf) [them] unto Abraham,H85 and restoredH7725(HiphImpf) him SarahH8283 his wife.H802 [15] And AbimelechH40 said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, my landH776 [is] before thee:H6440 dwellH3427(QalImpv) where it pleasethH2896 thee. [16] And unto SarahH8283 he said,H559(QalPerf) Behold, I have givenH5414(QalPerf) thy brotherH251 a thousandH505 [pieces] of silver:H3701 behold, he [is] to thee a coveringH3682 of the eyes,H5869 unto all that [are] with thee, and with all [other]: thus she was reproved.H3198(NiphPtc) [17] So AbrahamH85 prayedH6419(HithImpf) unto God:H430 and GodH430 healedH7495(QalImpf) Abimelech,H40 and his wife,H802 and his maidservants;H519 and they bareH3205(QalImpf) [children]. [18] For the LordH3068 had fastH6113(QalInf) closed upH6113(QalPerf) all the wombsH7358 of the houseH1004 of Abimelech,H40 becauseH1697 of SarahH8283 Abraham’sH85 wife.H802
