[1] Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the children of the east. [2] He looked, and saw a well in the field, and saw three flocks of sheep lying there by it. For out of that well they watered the flocks. The stone on the well’s mouth was large. [3] There all the flocks were gathered. They rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back on the well’s mouth in its place. [4] Jacob said to them, “My relatives, where are you from?”They said, “We are from Haran.” [5] He said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?”They said, “We know him.” [6] He said to them, “Is it well with him?”They said, “It is well. See, Rachel, his daughter, is coming with the sheep.” [7] He said, “Behold, it is still the middle of the day, not time to gather the livestock together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them.” [8] They said, “We can’t, until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the well’s mouth. Then we will water the sheep.” [9] While he was yet speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she kept them. [10] When Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother. [11] Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept. [12] Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s relative, and that he was Rebekah’s son. She ran and told her father. [13] When Laban heard the news of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet Jacob, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things. [14] Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” Jacob stayed with him for a month. [15] Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what will your wages be?” [16] Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. [17] Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and attractive. [18] Jacob loved Rachel. He said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.” [19] Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.” [20] Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her. [21] Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.” [22] Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast. [23] In the evening, he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to Jacob. He went in to her. [24] Laban gave Zilpah his servant to his daughter Leah for a servant. [25] In the morning, behold, it was Leah! He said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?” [26] Laban said, “It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn. [27] Fulfill the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which you will serve with me for seven more years.” [28] Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week. He gave him Rachel his daughter as wife. [29] Laban gave Bilhah, his servant, to his daughter Rachel to be her servant. [30] He went in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him seven more years. [31] Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. [32] Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she named him Reuben. For she said, “Because Yahweh has looked at my affliction; for now my husband will love me.” [33] She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, “Because Yahweh has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this son also.” She named him Simeon. [34] She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “Now this time my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi. [35] She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, “This time I will praise Yahweh.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.

[1] Then JacobH3290 went onH5375(QalImpf) his journey,H7272 and cameH3212(QalImpf) into the landH776 of the peopleH1121 of the east.H6924 [2] And he looked,H7200(QalImpf) and behold a wellH875 in the field,H7704 and, lo, there [were] threeH7969 flocksH5739 of sheepH6629 lyingH7257(QalActPtc) by it; for out of that wellH875 they wateredH8248(HiphImpf) the flocks:H5739 and a greatH1419 stoneH68 [was] upon the well’sH875 mouth.H6310 [3] And thither were all the flocksH5739 gathered:H622(NiphPerf) and they rolledH1556(QalPerf) the stoneH68 from the well’sH875 mouth,H6310 and wateredH8248(HiphPerf) the sheep,H6629 and putH7725 the stoneH68 againH7725(HiphPerf) upon the well’sH875 mouthH6310 in his place.H4725 [4] And JacobH3290 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, My brethren,H251 whenceH370 [be] ye? And they said,H559(QalImpf) Of HaranH2771 [are] we. [5] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, KnowH3045(QalPerf) ye LabanH3837 the sonH1121 of Nahor?H5152 And they said,H559(QalImpf) We knowH3045(QalPerf) [him]. [6] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, [Is] he well?H7965 And they said,H559(QalImpf) [He is] well:H7965 and, behold, RachelH7354 his daughterH1323 comethH935(QalActPtc) with the sheep.H6629 [7] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Lo,H2005 [it is] yet highH1419 day,H3117 neither [is it] timeH6256 that the cattleH4735 should be gathered together:H622(NiphInf) waterH8248(HiphImpv) ye the sheep,H6629 and goH3212(QalImpv) [and] feedH7462(QalImpv) [them]. [8] And they said,H559(QalImpf) We cannot,H3201(QalImpf) until all the flocksH5739 be gathered together,H622(NiphImpf) and [till] they rollH1556(QalPerf) the stoneH68 from the well’sH875 mouth;H6310 then we waterH8248(HiphPerf) the sheep.H6629 [9] And while he yetH5750 spakeH1696(PielPtc) with them, RachelH7354 cameH935(QalPerf) with her father’sH1 sheep:H6629 for she kept them.H7462(QalActPtc) [10] And it came to pass, when JacobH3290 sawH7200(QalPerf) RachelH7354 the daughterH1323 of LabanH3837 his mother’sH517 brother,H251 and the sheepH6629 of LabanH3837 his mother’sH517 brother,H251 that JacobH3290 went near,H5066(QalImpf) and rolledH1556(HiphImpf) the stoneH68 from the well’sH875 mouth,H6310 and wateredH8248(HiphImpf) the flockH6629 of LabanH3837 his mother’sH517 brother.H251 [11] And JacobH3290 kissedH5401(QalImpf) Rachel,H7354 and lifted upH5375(QalImpf) his voice,H6963 and wept.H1058(QalImpf) [12] And JacobH3290 toldH5046(HiphImpf) RachelH7354 that he [was] her father’sH1 brother,H251 and that he [was] Rebekah’sH7259 son:H1121 and she ranH7323(QalImpf) and toldH5046(HiphImpf) her father.H1 [13] And it came to pass, when LabanH3837 heardH8085(QalInf) the tidingsH8088 of JacobH3290 his sister’sH269 son,H1121 that he ranH7323(QalImpf) to meetH7125(QalInf) him, and embracedH2263(PielImpf) him, and kissedH5401(PielImpf) him, and broughtH935(HiphImpf) him to his house.H1004 And he toldH5608(PielImpf) LabanH3837 all these things.H1697 [14] And LabanH3837 saidH559(QalImpf) to him, SurelyH389 thou [art] my boneH6106 and my flesh.H1320 And he abodeH3427(QalImpf) with him the spaceH3117 of a month.H2320 [15] And LabanH3837 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Jacob,H3290 Because thou [art] my brother,H251 shouldest thou therefore serveH5647(QalPerf) me for nought?H2600 tellH5046(HiphImpv) me, what [shall] thy wagesH4909 [be]? [16] And LabanH3837 had twoH8147 daughters:H1323 the nameH8034 of the elderH1419 [was] Leah,H3812 and the nameH8034 of the youngerH6996 [was] Rachel.H7354 [17] LeahH3812 [was] tenderH7390 eyed;H5869 but RachelH7354 was beautifulH3303 and wellH3303 favoured.H4758 [18] And JacobH3290 lovedH157(QalImpf) Rachel;H7354 and said,H559(QalImpf) I will serveH5647(QalImpf) thee sevenH7651 yearsH8141 for RachelH7354 thy youngerH6996 daughter.H1323 [19] And LabanH3837 said,H559(QalImpf) [It is] betterH2896 that I giveH5414(QalInf) her to thee, than that I should giveH5414(QalInf) her to anotherH312 man:H376 abideH3427(QalImpv) with me. [20] And JacobH3290 servedH5647(QalImpf) sevenH7651 yearsH8141 for Rachel;H7354 and they seemedH5869 unto him [but] a fewH259 days,H3117 for the love he hadH160 to her. [21] And JacobH3290 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Laban,H3837 GiveH3051(QalImpv) [me] my wife,H802 for my daysH3117 are fulfilled,H4390(QalPerf) that I may go inH935(QalImpf) unto her. [22] And LabanH3837 gathered togetherH622(QalImpf) all the menH582 of the place,H4725 and madeH6213(QalImpf) a feast.H4960 [23] And it came to pass in the evening,H6153 that he tookH3947(QalImpf) LeahH3812 his daughter,H1323 and broughtH935(HiphImpf) her to him; and he went inH935(QalImpf) unto her. [24] And LabanH3837 gaveH5414(QalImpf) unto his daughterH1323 LeahH3812 ZilpahH2153 his maidH8198 [for] an handmaid.H8198 [25] And it came to pass, that in the morning,H1242 behold, it [was] Leah:H3812 and he saidH559(QalImpf) to Laban,H3837 What [is] this thou hast doneH6213(QalPerf) unto me? did not I serveH5647(QalPerf) with thee for Rachel?H7354 wherefore then hast thou beguiledH7411(PielPerf) me? [26] And LabanH3837 said,H559(QalImpf) It must not be so doneH6213(NiphImpf) in our country,H4725 to giveH5414(QalInf) the youngerH6810 beforeH6440 the firstborn.H1067 [27] FulfilH4390(PielImpv) herH2063 week,H7620 and we will giveH5414(QalImpf) thee this also for the serviceH5656 which thou shalt serveH5647(QalImpf) with me yet sevenH7651 otherH312 years.H8141 [28] And JacobH3290 didH6213(QalImpf) so, and fulfilledH4390(PielImpf) her week:H7620 and he gaveH5414(QalImpf) him RachelH7354 his daughterH1323 to wifeH802 also. [29] And LabanH3837 gaveH5414(QalImpf) to RachelH7354 his daughterH1323 BilhahH1090 his handmaidH8198 to be her maid.H8198 [30] And he went inH935(QalImpf) also unto Rachel,H7354 and he lovedH157(QalImpf) also RachelH7354 more than Leah,H3812 and servedH5647(QalImpf) with him yet sevenH7651 otherH312 years.H8141 [31] And when the LordH3068 sawH7200(QalImpf) that LeahH3812 [was] hated,H8130(QalPasPtc) he openedH6605(QalImpf) her womb:H7358 but RachelH7354 [was] barren.H6135 [32] And LeahH3812 conceived,H2029(QalImpf) and bareH3205(QalImpf) a son,H1121 and she calledH7121(QalImpf) his nameH8034 Reuben:H7205 forH3588 she said,H559(QalPerf) SurelyH3588 the LordH3068 hath lookedH7200(QalPerf) upon my affliction;H6040 now thereforeH3588 my husbandH376 will loveH157(QalImpf) me. [33] And she conceivedH2029(QalImpf) again, and bareH3205(QalImpf) a son;H1121 and said,H559(QalImpf) Because the LordH3068 hath heardH8085(QalPerf) that I [was] hated,H8130(QalPasPtc) he hath therefore givenH5414(QalImpf) me this [son] also: and she calledH7121(QalImpf) his nameH8034 Simeon.H8095 [34] And she conceived again,H2029(QalImpf) and bareH3205(QalImpf) a son;H1121 and said,H559(QalImpf) Now this timeH6471 will my husbandH376 be joinedH3867(NiphImpf) unto me, because I have bornH3205(QalPerf) him threeH7969 sons:H1121 therefore was his nameH8034 calledH7121(QalPerf) Levi.H3878 [35] And she conceivedH2029(QalImpf) again, and bareH3205(QalImpf) a son:H1121 and she said,H559(QalImpf) NowH6471 will I praiseH3034(HiphImpf) the Lord:H3068 therefore she calledH7121(QalPerf) his nameH8034 Judah;H3063 and leftH5975(QalImpf) bearing.H3205(QalInf)
