[1] Jacob lived in the land of his father’s travels, in the land of Canaan. [2] This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father. [3] Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colors. [4] His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldn’t speak peaceably to him. [5] Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more. [6] He said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: [7] for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.” [8] His brothers asked him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words. [9] He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.” [10] He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to the earth before you?” [11] His brothers envied him, but his father kept this saying in mind. [12] His brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. [13] Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.” [14] He said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. [15] A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?” [16] He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.” [17] The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’ ”Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan. [18] They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him. [19] They said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes. [20] Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.” [21] Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.” [22] Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father. [23] When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him; [24] and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it. [25] They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. [26] Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? [27] Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him. [28] Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. The merchants brought Joseph into Egypt. [29] Reuben returned to the pit, and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes. [30] He returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?” [31] They took Joseph’s tunic, and killed a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood. [32] They took the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, and see if it is your son’s tunic or not.” [33] He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s tunic. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.” [34] Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days. [35] All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “For I will go down to Sheolⓘ to my son, mourning.” His father wept for him. [36] The Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.

[1] And JacobH3290 dweltH3427(QalImpf) in the landH776 wherein his fatherH1 was a stranger,H4033 in the landH776 of Canaan.H3667 [2] These [are] the generationsH8435 of Jacob.H3290 Joseph,H3130 [being] seventeenH6240 yearsH8141 old,H1121 was feedingH7462(QalActPtc) the flockH6629 with his brethren;H251 and the ladH5288 [was] with the sonsH1121 of Bilhah,H1090 and with the sonsH1121 of Zilpah,H2153 his father’sH1 wives:H802 and JosephH3130 broughtH935(HiphImpf) unto his fatherH1 their evilH7451 report.H1681 [3] Now IsraelH3478 lovedH157(QalPerf) JosephH3130 more than all his children,H1121 because he [was] the sonH1121 of his old age:H2208 and he madeH6213(QalPerf) him a coatH3801 of [many] colours.H6446 [4] And when his brethrenH251 sawH7200(QalImpf) that their fatherH1 lovedH157(QalPerf) him more than all his brethren,H251 they hatedH8130(QalImpf) him, and couldH3201(QalPerf) not speakH1696(PielInf) peaceablyH7965 unto him. [5] And JosephH3130 dreamedH2492(QalImpf) a dream,H2472 and he toldH5046(HiphImpf) [it] his brethren:H251 and they hatedH8130(QalInf) him yet the more.H3254(HiphImpf) [6] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Hear,H8085(QalImpv) I pray you, this dreamH2472 which I have dreamed:H2492(QalPerf) [7] For, behold, we [were] bindingH481(PielPtc) sheavesH485 in the field,H7704 and, lo, my sheafH485 arose,H6965(QalPerf) and also stood upright;H5324(NiphPerf) and, behold, your sheavesH485 stood round about,H5437(QalImpf) and made obeisanceH7812(HithImpf) to my sheaf.H485 [8] And his brethrenH251 saidH559(QalImpf) to him, Shalt thou indeedH4427(QalInf) reignH4427(QalImpf) over us? or shalt thou indeedH4910(QalInf) have dominionH4910(QalImpf) over us? And they hatedH8130(QalInf) him yet the moreH3254(HiphImpf) for his dreams,H2472 and for his words.H1697 [9] And he dreamedH2492(QalImpf) yet anotherH312 dream,H2472 and toldH5608(PielImpf) it his brethren,H251 and said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, I have dreamedH2492(QalPerf) a dreamH2472 more; and, behold, the sunH8121 and the moonH3394 and the elevenH6240 starsH3556 made obeisanceH7812(HithPtc) to me. [10] And he toldH5608(PielImpf) [it] to his father,H1 and to his brethren:H251 and his fatherH1 rebukedH1605(QalImpf) him, and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, What [is] this dreamH2472 that thou hast dreamed?H2492(QalPerf) Shall I and thy motherH517 and thy brethrenH251 indeedH935(QalInf) comeH935(QalImpf) to bow downH7812(HithInf) ourselves to thee to the earth?H776 [11] And his brethrenH251 enviedH7065(PielImpf) him; but his fatherH1 observedH8104(QalPerf) the saying.H1697 [12] And his brethrenH251 wentH3212(QalImpf) to feedH7462(QalInf) their father’sH1 flockH6629 in Shechem.H7927 [13] And IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joseph,H3130 Do not thy brethrenH251 feedH7462(QalActPtc) [the flock] in Shechem?H7927 come,H3212(QalImpv) and I will send theeH7971(QalImpf) unto them. And he saidH559(QalImpf) to him, Here [am I]. [14] And he saidH559(QalImpf) to him, Go,H3212(QalImpv) I pray thee, seeH7200(QalImpv) whether it be wellH7965 with thy brethren,H251 and wellH7965 with the flocks;H6629 and bringH7725 me wordH1697 again.H7725(HiphImpv) So he sentH7971(QalImpf) him out of the valeH6010 of Hebron,H2275 and he cameH935(QalImpf) to Shechem.H7927 [15] And a certain manH376 found him,H4672(QalImpf) and, behold, [he was] wanderingH8582(QalActPtc) in the field:H7704 and the manH376 asked him,H7592(QalImpf) saying,H559(QalInf) What seekestH1245(PielImpf) thou? [16] And he said,H559(QalImpf) I seekH1245(PielPtc) my brethren:H251 tellH5046(HiphImpv) me, I pray thee, whereH375 they feedH7462(QalActPtc) [their flocks]. [17] And the manH376 said,H559(QalImpf) They are departedH5265(QalPerf) hence;H2088 for I heardH8085(QalPerf) them say,H559(QalActPtc) Let us goH3212(QalImpf) to Dothan.H1886 And JosephH3130 wentH3212(QalImpf) afterH310 his brethren,H251 and foundH4672(QalImpf) them in Dothan.H1886 [18] And when they sawH7200(QalImpf) him afar off,H7350 even before he came nearH7126(QalImpf) unto them, they conspiredH5230(HithImpf) against him to slayH4191(HiphInf) him. [19] And they saidH559(QalImpf) oneH376 to another,H251 Behold, thisH1976 dreamerH1167 cometh.H935(QalActPtc) [20] ComeH3212(QalImpv) now therefore, and let us slayH2026(QalImpf) him, and castH7993(HiphImpf) him into someH259 pit,H953 and we will say,H559(QalPerf) Some evilH7451 beastH2416 hath devouredH398(QalPerf) him: and we shall seeH7200(QalImpf) what will become of his dreams.H2472 [21] And ReubenH7205 heardH8085(QalImpf) [it], and he deliveredH5337(HiphImpf) him out of their hands;H3027 and said,H559(QalImpf) Let us not killH5221(HiphImpf) him. [22] And ReubenH7205 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, ShedH8210(QalImpf) no blood,H1818 [but] castH7993(HiphImpv) him into this pitH953 that [is] in the wilderness,H4057 and layH7971(QalImpf) no handH3027 upon him; that he might ridH5337(HiphInf) him out of their hands,H3027 to deliverH7725 him to his fatherH1 again.H7725(HiphInf) [23] And it came to pass, when JosephH3130 was comeH935(QalPerf) unto his brethren,H251 that they striptH6584(HiphImpf) JosephH3130 out ofH854 his coat,H3801 [his] coatH3801 of [many] coloursH6446 that [was] on him; [24] And they tookH3947(QalImpf) him, and castH7993(HiphImpf) him into a pit:H953 and the pitH953 [was] empty,H7386 [there was] no waterH4325 in it. [25] And they sat downH3427(QalImpf) to eatH398(QalInf) bread:H3899 and they lifted upH5375(QalImpf) their eyesH5869 and looked,H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, a companyH736 of IshmeelitesH3459 cameH935(QalActPtc) from GileadH1568 with their camelsH1581 bearingH5375(QalActPtc) spiceryH5219 and balmH6875 and myrrh,H3910 goingH1980(QalActPtc) to carry [it] downH3381(HiphInf) to Egypt.H4714 [26] And JudahH3063 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his brethren,H251 What profitH1215 [is it] if we slayH2026(QalImpf) our brother,H251 and concealH3680(PielPerf) his blood?H1818 [27] Come,H3212(QalImpv) and let us sellH4376(QalImpf) him to the Ishmeelites,H3459 and let not our handH3027 be upon him; for he [is] our brotherH251 [and] our flesh.H1320 And his brethrenH251 were content.H8085(QalImpf) [28] Then there passedH5674(QalImpf) by MidianitesH4084 merchantmen;H582 and they drewH4900(QalImpf) and lifted upH5927(HiphImpf) JosephH3130 out of the pit,H953 and soldH4376(QalImpf) JosephH3130 to the IshmeelitesH3459 for twentyH6242 [pieces] of silver:H3701 and they broughtH935(HiphImpf) JosephH3130 into Egypt.H4714 [29] And ReubenH7205 returnedH7725(QalImpf) unto the pit;H953 and, behold, JosephH3130 [was] not in the pit;H953 and he rentH7167(QalImpf) his clothes.H899 [30] And he returnedH7725(QalImpf) unto his brethren,H251 and said,H559(QalImpf) The childH3206 [is] not; and I, whitherH575 shall I go?H935(QalActPtc) [31] And they tookH3947(QalImpf) Joseph’sH3130 coat,H3801 and killedH7819(QalImpf) a kidH8163 of the goats,H5795 and dippedH2881(QalImpf) the coatH3801 in the blood;H1818 [32] And they sentH7971(PielImpf) the coatH3801 of [many] colours,H6446 and they broughtH935(HiphImpf) [it] to their father;H1 and said,H559(QalImpf) This have we found:H4672(QalPerf) knowH5234(HiphImpv) now whether it [be] thy son’sH1121 coatH3801 or no. [33] And he knew it,H5234(HiphImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) [It is] my son’sH1121 coat;H3801 an evilH7451 beastH2416 hath devouredH398(QalPerf) him; JosephH3130 is without doubtH2963(QalInf) rent in pieces.H2963(PoalPerf) [34] And JacobH3290 rentH7167(QalImpf) his clothes,H8071 and putH7760(QalImpf) sackclothH8242 upon his loins,H4975 and mournedH56(HithImpf) for his sonH1121 manyH7227 days.H3117 [35] And all his sonsH1121 and all his daughtersH1323 rose upH6965(QalImpf) to comfortH5162(PielInf) him; but he refusedH3985(PielImpf) to be comforted;H5162(HithInf) and he said,H559(QalImpf) For I will go downH3381(QalImpf) into the graveH7585 unto my sonH1121 mourning.H57 Thus his fatherH1 weptH1058(QalImpf) for him. [36] And the MidianitesH4092 soldH4376(QalPerf) him into EgyptH4714 unto Potiphar,H6318 an officerH5631 of Pharaoh’s,H6547 [and] captainH8269 of the guard.H2876
