[1] At the end of two full years, Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he stood by the river. [2] Behold, seven cattle came up out of the river. They were sleek and fat, and they fed in the marsh grass. [3] Behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ugly and thin, and stood by the other cattle on the brink of the river. [4] The ugly and thin cattle ate up the seven sleek and fat cattle. So Pharaoh awoke. [5] He slept and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, healthy and good. [6] Behold, seven heads of grain, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. [7] The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy and full ears. Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream. [8] In the morning, his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt’s magicians and wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh. [9] Then the chief cup bearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “I remember my faults today. [10] Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, with the chief baker. [11] We dreamed a dream in one night, he and I. Each man dreamed according to the interpretation of his dream. [12] There was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams. He interpreted to each man according to his dream. [13] As he interpreted to us, so it was. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.” [14] Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came in to Pharaoh. [15] Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” [16] Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It isn’t in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.” [17] Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, “In my dream, behold, I stood on the brink of the river; [18] and behold, seven fat and sleek cattle came up out of the river. They fed in the marsh grass; [19] and behold, seven other cattle came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for ugliness. [20] The thin and ugly cattle ate up the first seven fat cattle; [21] and when they had eaten them up, it couldn’t be known that they had eaten them, but they were still ugly, as at the beginning. So I awoke. [22] I saw in my dream, and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, full and good; [23] and behold, seven heads of grain, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. [24] The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads of grain. I told it to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me.” [25] Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dream of Pharaoh is one. What God is about to do he has declared to Pharaoh. [26] The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good heads of grain are seven years. The dream is one. [27] The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine. [28] That is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. [29] Behold, seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt are coming. [30] Seven years of famine will arise after them, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land, [31] and the plenty will not be known in the land by reason of that famine which follows; for it will be very grievous. [32] The dream was doubled to Pharaoh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. [33] “Now therefore let Pharaoh look for a discreet and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. [34] Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt’s produce in the seven plenteous years. [35] Let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and store grain under the hand of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. [36] The food will be to supply the land against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Egypt; so that the land will not perish through the famine.” [37] The thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants. [38] Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?” [39] Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Because God has shown you all of this, there is no one so discreet and wise as you. [40] You shall be over my house. All my people will be ruled according to your word. Only in the throne I will be greater than you.” [41] Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” [42] Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck. [43] He made him ride in the second chariot which he had. They cried before him, “Bow the knee!” He set him over all the land of Egypt. [44] Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh. Without you, no man shall lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.” [45] Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-Paneah. He gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. Joseph went out over the land of Egypt. [46] Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. [47] In the seven plenteous years the earth produced abundantly. [48] He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities. He stored food in each city from the fields around that city. [49] Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number. [50] To Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him. [51] Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, “For”, he said, “God has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.” [52] The name of the second, he called Ephraim: “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.” [53] The seven years of plenty, that were in the land of Egypt, came to an end. [54] The seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. [55] When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do.” [56] The famine was over all the surface of the earth. Joseph opened all the store houses, and sold to the Egyptians. The famine was severe in the land of Egypt. [57] All countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth.

[16] And JosephH3130 answeredH6030(QalImpf) Pharaoh,H6547 saying,H559(QalInf) [It is] not in me:H1107 GodH430 shall giveH6030 PharaohH6547 an answerH6030(QalImpf) of peace.H7965 [17] And PharaohH6547 saidH1696(PielImpf) unto Joseph,H3130 In my dream,H2472 behold, I stoodH5975(QalActPtc) upon the bankH8193 of the river:H2975 [18] And, behold, there came upH5927(QalActPtc) out of the riverH2975 sevenH7651 kine,H6510 fatfleshedH1277 and wellH3303 favoured;H8389 and they fedH7462(QalImpf) in a meadow:H260 [19] And, behold, sevenH7651 otherH312 kineH6510 came upH5927(QalActPtc) after them,H310 poorH1803 and veryH3966 illH7451 favouredH8389 and leanfleshed,H7534 suchH2007 as I neverH3808 sawH7200(QalPerf) in all the landH776 of EgyptH4714 for badness:H7455 [20] And the leanH7534 and the ill favouredH7451 kineH6510 did eat upH398(QalImpf) the firstH7223 sevenH7651 fatH1277 kine:H6510 [21] And when they had eaten them up,H935(QalImpf) it could not be knownH3045(NiphPerf) that they had eaten them;H935(QalPerf) but they [were] stillH4758 ill favoured,H7451 as at the beginning.H8462 So I awoke.H3364(QalImpf) [22] And I sawH7200(QalImpf) in my dream,H2472 and, behold, sevenH7651 earsH7641 came upH5927(QalActPtc) in oneH259 stalk,H7070 fullH4392 and good:H2896 [23] And, behold, sevenH7651 ears,H7641 withered,H6798(QalPasPtc) thin,H1851 [and] blastedH7710(QalPasPtc) with the east wind,H6921 sprung upH6779(QalActPtc) after them:H310 [24] And the thinH1851 earsH7641 devouredH1104(QalImpf) the sevenH7651 goodH2896 ears:H7641 and I toldH559(QalImpf) [this] unto the magicians;H2748 but [there was] none that could declareH5046(HiphPtc) [it] to me. [25] And JosephH3130 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Pharaoh,H6547 The dreamH2472 of PharaohH6547 [is] one:H259 GodH430 hath shewedH5046(HiphPerf) PharaohH6547 what he [is] about to do.H6213(QalActPtc) [26] The sevenH7651 goodH2896 kineH6510 [are] sevenH7651 years;H8141 and the sevenH7651 goodH2896 earsH7641 [are] sevenH7651 years:H8141 the dreamH2472 [is] one.H259 [27] And the sevenH7651 thinH7534 and ill favouredH7451 kineH6510 that came upH5927(QalActPtc) after themH310 [are] sevenH7651 years;H8141 and the sevenH7651 emptyH7386 earsH7641 blastedH7710(QalPasPtc) with the east windH6921 shall be sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of famine.H7458 [28] This [is] the thingH1697 which I have spokenH1696(PielPerf) unto Pharaoh:H6547 What GodH430 [is] about to doH6213(QalActPtc) he shewethH7200(HiphPerf) unto Pharaoh.H6547 [29] Behold, there comeH935(QalActPtc) sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of greatH1419 plentyH7647 throughout all the landH776 of Egypt:H4714 [30] And there shall ariseH6965(QalPerf) after themH310 sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of famine;H7458 and all the plentyH7647 shall be forgottenH7911(NiphPerf) in the landH776 of Egypt;H4714 and the famineH7458 shall consumeH3615(PielPerf) the land;H776 [31] And the plentyH7647 shall not be knownH3045(NiphImpf) in the landH776 by reasonH6440 of that famineH7458 following;H310 for it [shall be] veryH3966 grievous.H3515 [32] And for that the dreamH2472 was doubledH8138(NiphInf) unto PharaohH6547 twice;H6471 [it is] because the thingH1697 [is] establishedH3559(NiphPtc) byH5973 God,H430 and GodH430 will shortlyH4116(PielPtc) bring it to pass.H6213(QalInf) [33] Now therefore let PharaohH6547 look outH7200(QalImpf) a manH376 discreetH995(NiphPtc) and wise,H2450 and setH7896(QalImpf) him over the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [34] Let PharaohH6547 doH6213(QalImpf) [this], and let him appointH6485(HiphImpf) officersH6496 over the land,H776 and take up the fifth partH2567(PielPerf) of the landH776 of EgyptH4714 in the sevenH7651 plenteousH7647 years.H8141 [35] And let them gatherH6908(QalImpf) all the foodH400 of those goodH2896 yearsH8141 that come,H935(QalActPtc) and lay upH6651(QalImpf) cornH1250 under the handH3027 of Pharaoh,H6547 and let them keepH8104(QalPerf) foodH400 in the cities.H5892 [36] And that foodH400 shall be for storeH6487 to the landH776 against the sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of famine,H7458 which shall be in the landH776 of Egypt;H4714 that the landH776 perishH3772(NiphImpf) not through the famine.H7458 [37] And the thingH1697 was goodH3190(QalImpf) in the eyesH5869 of Pharaoh,H6547 and in the eyesH5869 of all his servants.H5650 [38] And PharaohH6547 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his servants,H5650 Can we findH4672(QalImpf) [such a one] as thisH2088 [is], a manH376 in whomH834 the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 [is]? [39] And PharaohH6547 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joseph,H3130 ForasmuchH310 as GodH430 hath shewedH3045(HiphInf) thee all this, [there is] none so discreetH995(NiphPtc) and wiseH2450 as thou [art]: [40] Thou shalt beH1961(QalImpf) over my house,H1004 and according unto thy wordH6310 shall all my peopleH5971 be ruled:H5401(QalImpf) only in the throneH3678 will I be greaterH1431(QalImpf) than thou. [41] And PharaohH6547 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joseph,H3130 See,H7200(QalImpv) I have setH5414(QalPerf) thee over all the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [42] And PharaohH6547 took offH5493(HiphImpf) his ringH2885 from his hand,H3027 and putH5414(QalImpf) it upon Joseph’sH3130 hand,H3027 and arrayedH3847(HiphImpf) him in vesturesH899 of fine linen,H8336 and putH7760(QalImpf) a goldH2091 chainH7242 about his neck;H6677 [43] And he made him to rideH7392(HiphImpf) in the secondH4932 chariotH4818 which he had; and they criedH7121(QalImpf) before him,H6440 Bow the knee:H86 and he madeH5414(QalInf) him [ruler] over all the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [44] And PharaohH6547 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joseph,H3130 I [am] Pharaoh,H6547 and withoutH1107 thee shall no manH376 lift upH7311(HiphImpf) his handH3027 or footH7272 in all the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [45] And PharaohH6547 calledH7121(QalImpf) Joseph’sH3130 nameH8034 Zaphnathpaaneah;H6847 and he gaveH5414(QalImpf) him to wifeH802 AsenathH621 the daughterH1323 of PotipherahH6319 priestH3548 of On.H204 And JosephH3130 went outH3318(QalImpf) over [all] the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [46] And JosephH3130 [was] thirtyH7970 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he stoodH5975(QalInf) beforeH6440 PharaohH6547 kingH4428 of Egypt.H4714 And JosephH3130 went outH3318(QalImpf) from the presenceH6440 of Pharaoh,H6547 and went throughoutH5674(QalImpf) all the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [47] And in the sevenH7651 plenteousH7647 yearsH8141 the earthH776 brought forthH6213(QalImpf) by handfuls.H7062 [48] And he gathered upH6908(QalImpf) all the foodH400 of the sevenH7651 years,H8141 which were in the landH776 of Egypt,H4714 and laid upH5414(QalImpf) the foodH400 in the cities:H5892 the foodH400 of the field,H7704 which [was] round aboutH5439 every city,H5892 laid he upH5414(QalPerf) in the same.H8432 [49] And JosephH3130 gatheredH6651(QalImpf) cornH1250 as the sandH2344 of the sea,H3220 veryH3966 much,H7235(HiphInf) until he leftH2308(QalPerf) numbering;H5608(QalInf) for [it was] withoutH369 number.H4557 [50] And unto JosephH3130 were bornH3205(PualPerf) twoH8147 sonsH1121 before the yearsH8141 of famineH7458 came,H935(QalImpf) which AsenathH621 the daughterH1323 of PotipherahH6319 priestH3548 of OnH204 bareH3205(QalPerf) unto him. [51] And JosephH3130 calledH7121(QalImpf) the nameH8034 of the firstbornH1060 Manasseh:H4519 For God,H430 [said he], hath made me forgetH5382(PielPerf) all my toil,H5999 and all my father’sH1 house.H1004 [52] And the nameH8034 of the secondH8145 calledH7121(QalPerf) he Ephraim:H669 For GodH430 hath caused me to be fruitfulH6509(HiphPerf) in the landH776 of my affliction.H6040 [53] And the sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of plenteousness,H7647 that was in the landH776 of Egypt,H4714 were ended.H3615(QalImpf) [54] And the sevenH7651 yearsH8141 of dearthH7458 beganH2490(HiphImpf) to come,H935(QalInf) according as JosephH3130 had said:H559(QalPerf) and the dearthH7458 was in all lands;H776 but in all the landH776 of EgyptH4714 there was bread.H3899 [55] And when all the landH776 of EgyptH4714 was famished,H7456(QalImpf) the peopleH5971 criedH6817(QalImpf) to PharaohH6547 for bread:H3899 and PharaohH6547 saidH559(QalImpf) unto all the Egyptians,H4714 GoH3212(QalImpv) unto Joseph;H3130 what he saithH559(QalImpf) to you, do.H6213(QalImpf) [56] And the famineH7458 was over all the faceH6440 of the earth:H776 And JosephH3130 openedH6605(QalImpf) all the storehouses, and soldH7666(QalImpf) unto the Egyptians;H4714 and the famineH7458 waxed soreH2388(QalImpf) in the landH776 of Egypt.H4714 [57] And all countriesH776 cameH935(QalPerf) into EgyptH4714 to JosephH3130 for to buyH7666(QalInf) [corn]; because that the famineH7458 was [so] soreH2388(QalPerf) in all lands.H776
