[1] Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” [2] He said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die.” [3] Joseph’s ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. [4] But Jacob didn’t send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps harm happen to him.” [5] The sons of Israel came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. [6] Joseph was the governor over the land. It was he who sold to all the people of the land. Joseph’s brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the earth. [7] Joseph saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, “Where did you come from?”They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” [8] Joseph recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him. [9] Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land.” [10] They said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. [11] We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men. Your servants are not spies.” [12] He said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land!” [13] They said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is today with our father, and one is no more.” [14] Joseph said to them, “It is like I told you, saying, ‘You are spies!’ [15] By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from here, unless your youngest brother comes here. [16] Send one of you, and let him get your brother, and you shall be bound, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you, or else by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies.” [17] He put them all together into custody for three days. [18] Joseph said to them the third day, “Do this, and live, for I fear God. [19] If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison; but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses. [20] Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.”They did so. [21] They said to one another, “We are certainly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.” [22] Reuben answered them, saying, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘Don’t sin against the child,’ and you wouldn’t listen? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.” [23] They didn’t know that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them. [24] He turned himself away from them, and wept. Then he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes. [25] Then Joseph gave a command to fill their bags with grain, and to restore each man’s money into his sack, and to give them food for the way. So it was done to them. [26] They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there. [27] As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. [28] He said to his brothers, “My money is restored! Behold, it is in my sack!” Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” [29] They came to Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and told him all that had happened to them, saying, [30] “The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country. [31] We said to him, ‘We are honest men. We are no spies. [32] We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is today with our father in the land of Canaan.’ [33] The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way. [34] Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. So I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’ ” [35] As they emptied their sacks, behold, each man’s bundle of money was in his sack. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. [36] Jacob, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me.” [37] Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons, if I don’t bring him to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him to you again.” [38] He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

[2] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, I have heardH8085(QalPerf) that there isH3426 cornH7668 in Egypt:H4714 get you downH3381(QalImpv) thither, and buyH7666(QalImpv) for us from thence; that we may live,H2421(QalImpf) and not die.H4191(QalImpf) [3] And Joseph’sH3130 tenH6235 brethrenH251 went downH3381(QalImpf) to buyH7666(QalInf) cornH1250 in Egypt.H4714 [4] But Benjamin,H1144 Joseph’sH3130 brother,H251 JacobH3290 sentH7971(QalPerf) not with his brethren;H251 for he said,H559(QalPerf) Lest peradventureH6435 mischiefH611 befall him.H7122(QalImpf) [5] And the sonsH1121 of IsraelH3478 cameH935(QalImpf) to buyH7666(QalInf) [corn] amongH8432 those that came:H935(QalActPtc) for the famineH7458 was in the landH776 of Canaan.H3667 [6] And JosephH3130 [was] the governorH7989 over the land,H776 [and] he [it was] that soldH7666(HiphPtc) to all the peopleH5971 of the land:H776 and Joseph’sH3130 brethrenH251 came,H935(QalImpf) and bowed downH7812(HithImpf) themselves before him [with] their facesH639 to the earth.H776 [7] And JosephH3130 sawH7200(QalImpf) his brethren,H251 and he knewH5234(HiphImpf) them, but made himself strangeH5234(HithImpf) unto them, and spakeH1696(PielImpf) roughlyH7186 unto them; and he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, WhenceH370 comeH935(QalPerf) ye? And they said,H559(QalImpf) From the landH776 of CanaanH3667 to buyH7666(QalInf) food.H400 [8] And JosephH3130 knewH5234(HiphImpf) his brethren,H251 but they knewH5234(HiphPerf) not him. [9] And JosephH3130 rememberedH2142(QalImpf) the dreamsH2472 which he dreamedH2492(QalPerf) of them, and saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Ye [are] spies;H7270(PielPtc) to seeH7200(QalInf) the nakednessH6172 of the landH776 ye are come.H935(QalPerf) [10] And they saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Nay, my lord,H113 but to buyH7666(QalInf) foodH400 are thy servantsH5650 come.H935(QalPerf) [11] WeH5168 [are] all oneH259 man’sH376 sons;H1121 we [are] trueH3651 [men], thy servantsH5650 are no spies.H7270(PielPtc) [12] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Nay, but to seeH7200(QalInf) the nakednessH6172 of the landH776 ye are come.H935(QalPerf) [13] And they said,H559(QalImpf) Thy servantsH5650 [are] twelveH8147 brethren,H251 the sonsH1121 of oneH259 manH376 in the landH776 of Canaan;H3667 and, behold, the youngestH6996 [is] this dayH3117 with our father,H1 and oneH259 [is] not. [14] And JosephH3130 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, That [is it] that I spakeH1696(PielPerf) unto you, saying,H559(QalInf) Ye [are] spies:H7270(PielPtc) [15] HerebyH2063 ye shall be proved:H974(NiphImpf) By the lifeH2416 of PharaohH6547 ye shall not go forthH3318(QalImpf) hence, except your youngestH6996 brotherH251 comeH935(QalInf) hither. [16] SendH7971(QalImpv) oneH259 of you, and let him fetchH3947(QalImpf) your brother,H251 and ye shall be kept in prison,H631(NiphImpv) that your wordsH1697 may be proved,H974(NiphImpf) whether [there be any] truthH571 inH854 you: or elseH3808 by the lifeH2416 of PharaohH6547 surely ye [are] spies.H7270(PielPtc) [17] And he put them all togetherH622(QalImpf) into wardH4929 threeH7969 days.H3117 [18] And JosephH3130 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them the thirdH7992 day,H3117 This do,H6213(QalImpv) and live;H2421(QalImpv) [for] I fearH3373 God:H430 [19] If ye [be] trueH3651 [men], let oneH259 of your brethrenH251 be boundH631(NiphImpf) in the houseH1004 of your prison:H4929 goH3212(QalImpv) ye, carryH935(HiphImpv) cornH7668 for the famineH7459 of your houses:H1004 [20] But bringH935(HiphImpf) your youngestH6996 brotherH251 unto me; so shall your wordsH1697 be verified,H539(NiphImpf) and ye shall not die.H4191(QalImpf) And they didH6213(QalImpf) so. [21] And they saidH559(QalImpf) oneH376 to another,H251 We [are] verilyH61 guiltyH818 concerning our brother,H251 in thatH834 we sawH7200(QalPerf) the anguishH6869 of his soul,H5315 when he besoughtH2603(HithInf) us, and we would not hear;H8085(QalPerf) therefore is this distressH6869 comeH935(QalPerf) upon us. [22] And ReubenH7205 answeredH6030(QalImpf) them, saying,H559(QalInf) Spake IH559(QalPerf) not unto you, saying,H559(QalInf) Do not sinH2398(QalImpf) against the child;H3206 and ye would not hear?H8085(QalPerf) therefore, behold, also his bloodH1818 is required.H1875(NiphPerf) [23] And they knewH3045(QalPerf) not that JosephH3130 understoodH8085(QalActPtc) [them]; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.H3887(HiphPtc) [24] And he turned himself aboutH5437(NiphImpf) from them, and wept;H1058(QalImpf) and returned to them again,H7725(QalImpf) and communedH1696(PielImpf) with them, and tookH3947(QalImpf) from them Simeon,H8095 and boundH631(QalImpf) him before their eyes.H5869 [25] Then JosephH3130 commandedH6680(PielImpf) to fillH4390(PielImpf) their sacksH3627 with corn,H1250 and to restoreH7725(HiphInf) every man’sH376 moneyH3701 into his sack,H8242 and to giveH5414(QalInf) them provisionH6720 for the way:H1870 and thusH3651 did heH6213(QalImpf) unto them. [26] And they ladedH5375(QalImpf) their assesH2543 with the corn,H7668 and departedH3212(QalImpf) thence. [27] And as oneH259 of them openedH6605(QalImpf) his sackH8242 to giveH5414(QalInf) his assH2543 provenderH4554 in the inn,H4411 he espiedH7200(QalImpf) his money;H3701 for, behold, it [was] in his sack’sH572 mouth.H6310 [28] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto his brethren,H251 My moneyH3701 is restored;H7725(HophPerf) and, lo,H2009 [it is] even in my sack:H572 and their heartH3820 failedH3318(QalImpf) [them], and they were afraid,H2729(QalImpf) sayingH559(QalInf) oneH376 to another,H251 What [is] this [that] GodH430 hath doneH6213(QalPerf) unto us? [29] And they cameH935(QalImpf) unto JacobH3290 their fatherH1 unto the landH776 of Canaan,H3667 and toldH5046(HiphImpf) him all that befellH7136(QalActPtc) unto them; saying,H559(QalInf) [30] The man,H376 [who is] the lordH113 of the land,H776 spakeH1696(PielPerf) roughlyH7186 to us, and tookH5414(QalImpf) us for spiesH7270(PielPtc) of the country.H776 [31] And we saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, We [are] trueH3651 [men]; we are no spies:H7270(PielPtc) [32] We [be] twelveH6240 brethren,H251 sonsH1121 of our father;H1 oneH259 [is] not, and the youngestH6996 [is] this dayH3117 with our fatherH1 in the landH776 of Canaan.H3667 [33] And the man,H376 the lordH113 of the country,H776 saidH559(QalImpf) unto us, Hereby shall I knowH3045(QalImpf) that ye [are] trueH3651 [men]; leaveH3240(HiphImpv) oneH259 of your brethrenH251 [here] with me, and takeH3947(QalImpv) [food for] the famineH7459 of your households,H1004 and be gone:H3212(QalImpv) [34] And bringH935(HiphImpv) your youngestH6996 brotherH251 unto me: then shall I knowH3045(QalImpf) that ye [are] no spies,H7270(PielPtc) but [that] ye [are] trueH3651 [men: so] will I deliverH5414(QalImpf) you your brother,H251 and ye shall traffickH5503(QalImpf) in the land.H776 [35] And it came to pass as they emptiedH7324(HiphPtc) their sacks,H8242 that, behold, every man’sH376 bundleH6872 of moneyH3701 [was] in his sack:H8242 and when [both] they and their fatherH1 sawH7200(QalImpf) the bundlesH6872 of money,H3701 they were afraid.H3372(QalImpf) [36] And JacobH3290 their fatherH1 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Me have ye bereavedH7921(PielPerf) [of my children]: JosephH3130 [is] not, and SimeonH8095 [is] not, and ye will takeH3947(QalImpf) BenjaminH1144 [away]: all these things are against me. [37] And ReubenH7205 spakeH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 saying,H559(QalInf) SlayH4191(HiphImpf) my twoH8147 sons,H1121 if I bringH935(HiphImpf) him not to thee: deliverH5414(QalImpv) him into my hand,H3027 and I will bring him to thee again.H7725(HiphImpf) [38] And he said,H559(QalImpf) My sonH1121 shall not go downH3381(QalImpf) with you; for his brotherH251 is dead,H4191(QalPerf) and he is leftH7604(NiphPerf) alone: if mischiefH611 befallH7122(QalPerf) him by the wayH1870 in the which ye go,H3212(QalImpf) then shall ye bring downH3381(HiphPerf) my gray hairsH7872 with sorrowH3015 to the grave.H7585
