[1] After these things, someone said to Joseph, “Behold, your father is sick.” He took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. [2] Someone told Jacob, and said, “Behold, your son Joseph comes to you,” and Israel strengthened himself, and sat on the bed. [3] Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, [4] and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’ [5] Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you into Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh, even as Reuben and Simeon, will be mine. [6] Your offspring, whom you become the father of after them, will be yours. They will be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance. [7] As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died beside me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem).” [8] Israel saw Joseph’s sons, and said, “Who are these?” [9] Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.”He said, “Please bring them to me, and I will bless them.” [10] Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he couldn’t see well. Joseph brought them near to him; and he kissed them, and embraced them. [11] Israel said to Joseph, “I didn’t think I would see your face, and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.” [12] Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. [13] Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near to him. [14] Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn. [15] He blessed Joseph, and said,
“The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
the God who has fed me all my life long to this day,
[16] the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads,
and let my name be named on them,
and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac.
Let them grow into a multitude upon the earth.”
[17] When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. He held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. [18] Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head.” [19] His father refused, and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also will become a people, and he also will be great. However, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his offspring will become a multitude of nations.” [20] He blessed them that day, saying, “Israel will bless in you, saying, ‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh’ ” He set Ephraim before Manasseh. [21] Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am dying, but God will be with you, and bring you again to the land of your fathers. [22] Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.”

[6] And thy issue,H4138 which thou begettestH3205(HiphPerf) afterH310 them, shall be thine, [and] shall be calledH7121(NiphImpf) afterH5921 the nameH8034 of their brethrenH251 in their inheritance.H5159 [7] And as for me, when I cameH935(QalInf) from Padan,H6307 RachelH7354 diedH4191(QalPerf) by me in the landH776 of CanaanH3667 in the way,H1870 whenH5750 yet [there was] but a littleH3530 wayH776 to comeH935(QalInf) unto Ephrath:H672 and I buried herH6912(QalImpf) there in the wayH1870 of Ephrath;H672 the same [is] Bethlehem.H1035 [8] And IsraelH3478 beheldH7200(QalImpf) Joseph’sH3130 sons,H1121 and said,H559(QalImpf) Who [are] these? [9] And JosephH3130 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 They [are] my sons,H1121 whom GodH430 hath givenH5414(QalPerf) me in this [place]. And he said,H559(QalImpf) Bring them,H3947(QalImpv) I pray thee, unto me, and I will blessH1288(PielImpf) them. [10] Now the eyesH5869 of IsraelH3478 were dimH3513(QalPerf) for age,H2207 [so that] he couldH3201(QalImpf) not see.H7200(QalInf) And he brought them nearH5066(HiphImpf) unto him; and he kissedH5401(QalImpf) them, and embracedH2263(PielImpf) them. [11] And IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joseph,H3130 I had not thoughtH6419(PielPerf) to seeH7200(QalInf) thy face:H6440 and, lo, GodH430 hath shewedH7200(HiphPerf) me also thy seed.H2233 [12] And JosephH3130 brought them outH3318(HiphImpf) from betweenH5973 his knees,H1290 and he bowedH7812(HithImpf) himself with his faceH639 to the earth.H776 [13] And JosephH3130 tookH3947(QalImpf) them both,H8147 EphraimH669 in his right handH3225 toward Israel’sH3478 left hand,H8040 and ManassehH4519 in his left handH8040 toward Israel’sH3478 right hand,H3225 and brought [them] nearH5066(HiphImpf) unto him. [14] And IsraelH3478 stretched outH7971(QalImpf) his right hand,H3225 and laidH7896(QalImpf) [it] upon Ephraim’sH669 head,H7218 who [was] the younger,H6810 and his left handH8040 upon Manasseh’sH4519 head,H7218 guidingH7919 his handsH3027 wittingly;H7919(PielPerf) for ManassehH4519 [was] the firstborn.H1060 [15] And he blessedH1288(PielImpf) Joseph,H3130 and said,H559(QalImpf) God,H430 beforeH6440 whom my fathersH1 AbrahamH85 and IsaacH3327 did walk,H1980(HithPerf) the GodH430 which fedH7462(QalActPtc) me all my life longH5750 unto this day,H3117 [16] The AngelH4397 which redeemedH1350(QalActPtc) me from all evil,H7451 blessH1288(PielImpf) the lads;H5288 and let my nameH8034 be namedH7121(NiphImpf) on them, and the nameH8034 of my fathersH1 AbrahamH85 and Isaac;H3327 and let them growH1711(QalImpf) into a multitudeH7230 in the midstH7130 of the earth.H776 [17] And when JosephH3130 sawH7200(QalImpf) that his fatherH1 laidH7896(QalImpf) his rightH3225 handH3027 upon the headH7218 of Ephraim,H669 it displeasedH3415(QalImpf) him: and he held upH8551(QalImpf) his father’sH1 hand,H3027 to removeH5493(HiphInf) it from Ephraim’sH669 headH7218 unto Manasseh’sH4519 head.H7218 [18] And JosephH3130 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 Not so, my father:H1 for this [is] the firstborn;H1060 putH7760(QalImpv) thy right handH3225 upon his head.H7218 [19] And his fatherH1 refused,H3985(PielImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) I knowH3045(QalPerf) [it], my son,H1121 I knowH3045(QalPerf) [it]: he also shall become a people,H5971 and he also shall be great:H1431(QalImpf) but trulyH199 his youngerH6996 brotherH251 shall be greaterH1431(QalImpf) than he, and his seedH2233 shall become a multitudeH4393 of nations.H1471 [20] And he blessedH1288(PielImpf) them that day,H3117 saying,H559(QalInf) In thee shall IsraelH3478 bless,H1288(PielImpf) saying,H559(QalInf) GodH430 makeH7760(QalImpf) thee as EphraimH669 and as Manasseh:H4519 and he setH7760(QalImpf) EphraimH669 beforeH6440 Manasseh.H4519 [21] And IsraelH3478 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Joseph,H3130 Behold, I die:H4191(QalPtc) but GodH430 shall be with you, and bring you againH7725(HiphPerf) unto the landH776 of your fathers.H1 [22] Moreover I have givenH5414(QalPerf) to thee oneH259 portionH7926 above thy brethren,H251 which I tookH3947(QalPerf) out of the handH3027 of the AmoriteH567 with my swordH2719 and with my bow.H7198
