[1] There was a famine in the land, in addition to the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar. [2] Yahweh appeared to him, and said, “Don’t go down into Egypt. Live in the land I will tell you about. [3] Live in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you. For I will give to you, and to your offspring, all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. [4] I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and will give all these lands to your offspring. In your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed, [5] because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my requirements, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.” [6] Isaac lived in Gerar. [7] The men of the place asked him about his wife. He said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “My wife”, lest, he thought, “the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to look at.” [8] When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was caressing Rebekah, his wife. [9] Abimelech called Isaac, and said, “Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?”Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die because of her.’ ” [10] Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!” [11] Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death.” [12] Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. Yahweh blessed him. [13] The man grew great, and grew more and more until he became very great. [14] He had possessions of flocks, possessions of herds, and a great household. The Philistines envied him. [15] Now all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth. [16] Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.” [17] Isaac departed from there, encamped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there. [18] Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names by which his father had called them. [19] Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of flowing§ water. [20] The herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him. [21] They dug another well, and they argued over that, also. So he called its name Sitnah. [22] He left that place, and dug another well. They didn’t argue over that one. So he called it Rehoboth. He said, “For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.” [23] He went up from there to Beersheba. [24] Yahweh appeared to him the same night, and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham’s sake.” [25] He built an altar there, and called on Yahweh’s name, and pitched his tent there. There Isaac’s servants dug a well. [26] Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his army. [27] Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?” [28] They said, “We saw plainly that Yahweh was with you. We said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between us and you, and let’s make a covenant with you, [29] that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.’ You are now the blessed of Yahweh.” [30] He made them a feast, and they ate and drank. [31] They rose up some time in the morning, and swore an oath to one another. Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. [32] The same day, Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.” [33] He called it “Shibah”. Therefore the name of the city is “Beersheba” to this day. [34] When Esau was forty years old, he took as wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite. [35] They grieved Isaac’s and Rebekah’s spirits.

[10] And AbimelechH40 said,H559(QalImpf) What [is] this thou hast doneH6213(QalPerf) unto us? oneH259 of the peopleH5971 might lightlyH4592 have lienH7901(QalPerf) with thy wife,H802 and thou shouldest have broughtH935(HiphPerf) guiltinessH817 upon us. [11] And AbimelechH40 chargedH6680(PielImpf) all [his] people,H5971 saying,H559(QalInf) He that touchethH5060(QalActPtc) this manH376 or his wifeH802 shall surelyH4191(QalInf) be put to death.H4191(HophImpf) [12] Then IsaacH3327 sowedH2232(QalImpf) in that land,H776 and receivedH4672(QalImpf) in the same yearH8141 an hundredfold:H3967 and the LordH3068 blessedH1288(PielImpf) him. [13] And the manH376 waxed great,H1431(QalImpf) and wentH3212(QalImpf) forward,H1980(QalInf) and grewH1432 until he becameH1431 veryH3966 great:H1431(QalPerf) [14] For he had possessionH4735 of flocks,H6629 and possessionH4735 of herds,H1241 and great storeH7227 of servants:H5657 and the PhilistinesH6430 enviedH7065(PielImpf) him. [15] For all the wellsH875 which his father’sH1 servantsH5650 had diggedH2658(QalPerf) in the daysH3117 of AbrahamH85 his father,H1 the PhilistinesH6430 had stoppedH5640(PielPerf) them, and filledH4390(PielImpf) them with earth.H6083 [16] And AbimelechH40 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Isaac,H3327 GoH3212(QalImpv) from us; for thou art muchH3966 mightierH6105(QalPerf) than we. [17] And IsaacH3327 departedH3212(QalImpf) thence, and pitched his tentH2583(QalImpf) in the valleyH5158 of Gerar,H1642 and dweltH3427(QalImpf) there.H8033 [18] And IsaacH3327 diggedH2658(QalImpf) againH7725(QalImpf) the wellsH875 of water,H4325 which they had diggedH2658(QalPerf) in the daysH3117 of AbrahamH85 his father;H1 for the PhilistinesH6430 had stoppedH5640(PielImpf) them afterH310 the deathH4194 of Abraham:H85 and he calledH7121(QalImpf) their namesH8034 after the namesH8034 by whichH834 his fatherH1 had calledH7121(QalPerf) them. [19] And Isaac’sH3327 servantsH5650 diggedH2658(QalImpf) in the valley,H5158 and foundH4672(QalImpf) there a wellH875 of springingH2416 water.H4325 [20] And the herdmenH7462(QalActPtc) of GerarH1642 did striveH7378(QalImpf) with Isaac’sH3327 herdmen,H7462(QalActPtc) saying,H559(QalInf) The waterH4325 [is] ours: and he calledH7121(QalImpf) the nameH8034 of the wellH875 Esek;H6230 because they stroveH6229(HithPerf) with him. [21] And they diggedH2658(QalImpf) anotherH312 well,H875 and stroveH7378(QalImpf) for that also: and he calledH7121(QalImpf) the name of itH8034 Sitnah.H7856 [22] And he removedH6275(HiphImpf) from thence, and diggedH2658(QalImpf) anotherH312 well;H875 and for that they stroveH7378(QalPerf) not: and he calledH7121(QalImpf) the name of itH8034 Rehoboth;H7344 and he said,H559(QalImpf) For nowH6258 the LordH3068 hath made roomH7337(HiphPerf) for us, and we shall be fruitfulH6509(QalPerf) in the land.H776 [23] And he went upH5927(QalImpf) from thence to Beersheba.H884 [24] And the LordH3068 appearedH7200(NiphImpf) unto him the same night,H3915 and said,H559(QalImpf) I [am] the GodH430 of AbrahamH85 thy father:H1 fearH3372(QalImpf) not, for I [am] withH854 thee, and will blessH1288(PielPerf) thee, and multiplyH7235(HiphPerf) thy seedH2233 for my servantH5650 Abraham’sH85 sake. [25] And he buildedH1129(QalImpf) an altarH4196 there, and calledH7121(QalImpf) upon the nameH8034 of the Lord,H3068 and pitchedH5186(QalImpf) his tentH168 there: and there Isaac’sH3327 servantsH5650 diggedH3738(QalImpf) a well.H875 [26] Then AbimelechH40 wentH1980(QalPerf) to him from Gerar,H1642 and AhuzzathH276 one of his friends,H4828 and PhicholH6369 the chief captainH8269 of his army.H6635 [27] And IsaacH3327 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, WhereforeH4069 comeH935(QalPerf) ye to me, seeing ye hateH8130(QalPerf) me, and have sent me awayH7971(PielImpf) from you? [28] And they said,H559(QalImpf) We sawH7200(QalPerf) certainlyH7200(QalInf) that the LordH3068 was with thee: and we said,H559(QalImpf) Let there be now an oathH423 betwixtH996 us, [even] betwixtH996 us and thee, and let us makeH3772(QalImpf) a covenantH1285 with thee; [29] That thou wilt doH6213(QalImpf) us no hurt,H7451 as we have not touchedH5060(QalPerf) thee, and as we have doneH6213(QalPerf) unto thee nothing butH7535 good,H2896 and have sent thee awayH7971(PielImpf) in peace:H7965 thou [art] nowH6258 the blessedH1288(QalPasPtc) of the Lord.H3068 [30] And he madeH6213(QalImpf) them a feast,H4960 and they did eatH398(QalImpf) and drink.H8354(QalImpf) [31] And they rose up betimesH7925(HiphImpf) in the morning,H1242 and swareH7650(NiphImpf) oneH376 to another:H251 and IsaacH3327 sent them away,H7971(PielImpf) and they departedH3212(QalImpf) from him in peace.H7965 [32] And it came to pass the same day,H3117 that Isaac’sH3327 servantsH5650 came,H935(QalImpf) and toldH5046(HiphImpf) him concerningH182 the wellH875 which they had digged,H2658(QalPerf) and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, We have foundH4672(QalPerf) water.H4325 [33] And he calledH7121(QalImpf) it Shebah:H7656 therefore the nameH8034 of the cityH5892 [is] BeershebaH884 unto this day.H3117 [34] And EsauH6215 was fortyH705 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he tookH3947(QalImpf) to wifeH802 JudithH3067 the daughterH1323 of BeeriH882 the Hittite,H2850 and BashemathH1315 the daughterH1323 of ElonH356 the Hittite:H2850 [35] Which were a griefH4786 of mindH7307 unto IsaacH3327 and to Rebekah.H7259
