[1] When Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, “My son?”He said to him, “Here I am.” [2] He said, “See now, I am old. I don’t know the day of my death. [3] Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and get me venison. [4] Make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat, and that my soul may bless you before I die.” [5] Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it. [6] Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Behold, I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, [7] ‘Bring me venison, and make me savory food, that I may eat, and bless you before Yahweh before my death.’ [8] Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command you. [9] Go now to the flock and get me two good young goats from there. I will make them savory food for your father, such as he loves. [10] You shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.” [11] Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. [12] What if my father touches me? I will seem to him as a deceiver, and I would bring a curse on myself, and not a blessing.” [13] His mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son. Only obey my voice, and go get them for me.” [14] He went, and got them, and brought them to his mother. His mother made savory food, such as his father loved. [15] Rebekah took the good clothes of Esau, her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob, her younger son. [16] She put the skins of the young goats on his hands, and on the smooth of his neck. [17] She gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob. [18] He came to his father, and said, “My father?”He said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” [19] Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done what you asked me to do. Please arise, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me.” [20] Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?”He said, “Because Yahweh your God gave me success.” [21] Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” [22] Jacob went near to Isaac his father. He felt him, and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” [23] He didn’t recognize him, because his hands were hairy, like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him. [24] He said, “Are you really my son Esau?”He said, “I am.” [25] He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless you.”He brought it near to him, and he ate. He brought him wine, and he drank. [26] His father Isaac said to him, “Come near now, and kiss me, my son.” [27] He came near, and kissed him. He smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him, and said,
“Behold, the smell of my son
is as the smell of a field which Yahweh has blessed.
[28] God give you of the dew of the sky,
of the fatness of the earth,
and plenty of grain and new wine.
[29] Let peoples serve you,
and nations bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers.
Let your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be everyone who curses you.
Blessed be everyone who blesses you.”
[30] As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had just gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting. [31] He also made savory food, and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that your soul may bless me.” [32] Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?”He said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” [33] Isaac trembled violently, and said, “Who, then, is he who has taken venison, and brought it to me, and I have eaten of all before you came, and have blessed him? Yes, he will be blessed.” [34] When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, my father.” [35] He said, “Your brother came with deceit, and has taken away your blessing.” [36] He said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright. See, now he has taken away my blessing.” He said, “Haven’t you reserved a blessing for me?” [37] Isaac answered Esau, “Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants. I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What then will I do for you, my son?” [38] Esau said to his father, “Do you have just one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, my father.” Esau lifted up his voice, and wept. [39] Isaac his father answered him,
“Behold, your dwelling will be of the fatness of the earth,
and of the dew of the sky from above.
[40] You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother.
It will happen, when you will break loose,
that you will shake his yoke from off your neck.”
[41] Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.” [42] The words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah. She sent and called Jacob, her younger son, and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. [43] Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban, my brother, in Haran. [44] Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away— [45] until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send, and get you from there. Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?” [46] Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good will my life do me?”

[1] And it came to pass,H1961(QalImpf) that when IsaacH3327 was old,H2204(QalPerf) and his eyesH5869 were dim,H3543(QalImpf) so that he could not see,H7200(QalInf) he calledH7121(QalImpf) EsauH6215 his eldestH1419 son,H1121 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, My son:H1121 and he saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Behold, [here am] I. [2] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Behold now, I am old,H2204(QalPerf) I knowH3045(QalPerf) not the dayH3117 of my death:H4194 [3] Now therefore take,H5375(QalImpv) I pray thee, thy weapons,H3627 thy quiverH8522 and thy bow,H7198 and go outH3318(QalImpv) to the field,H7704 and takeH6679(QalImpv) me [some] venison;H6718(Qere) [4] And makeH6213(QalImpv) me savoury meat,H4303 such asH834 I love,H157(QalPerf) and bringH935(HiphImpv) [it] to me, that I may eat;H398(QalImpf) that my soulH5315 may blessH1288(PielImpf) thee beforeH2962 I die.H4191(QalImpf) [5] And RebekahH7259 heardH8085(QalActPtc) when IsaacH3327 spakeH1696(PielInf) to EsauH6215 his son.H1121 And EsauH6215 wentH3212(QalImpf) to the fieldH7704 to huntH6679(QalInf) [for] venison,H6718 [and] to bringH935(HiphInf) [it]. [6] And RebekahH7259 spakeH559(QalPerf) unto JacobH3290 her son,H1121 saying,H559(QalInf) Behold, I heardH8085(QalPerf) thy fatherH1 speakH1696(PielPtc) unto EsauH6215 thy brother,H251 saying,H559(QalInf) [7] BringH935(HiphImpv) me venison,H6718 and makeH6213(QalImpv) me savoury meat,H4303 that I may eat,H398(QalImpf) and blessH1288(PielImpf) thee beforeH6440 the LordH3068 beforeH6440 my death.H4194 [8] Now therefore, my son,H1121 obeyH8085(QalImpv) my voiceH6963 according to that whichH834 I commandH6680(PielPtc) thee. [9] GoH3212(QalImpv) now to the flock,H6629 and fetchH3947(QalImpv) me from thence twoH8147 goodH2896 kidsH1423 of the goats;H5795 and I will makeH6213(QalImpf) them savoury meatH4303 for thy father,H1 such as he loveth:H157(QalPerf) [10] And thou shalt bringH935(HiphPerf) [it] to thy father,H1 that he may eat,H398(QalPerf) and thatH834 he may blessH1288(PielImpf) thee beforeH6440 his death.H4194 [11] And JacobH3290 saidH559(QalImpf) to RebekahH7259 his mother,H517 Behold, EsauH6215 my brotherH251 [is] a hairyH8163 man,H376 and I [am] a smoothH2509 man:H376 [12] My fatherH1 peradventure will feelH4959(QalImpf) me, and I shall seemH5869 to him as a deceiver;H8591(PilpPtc) and I shall bringH935(HiphPerf) a curseH7045 upon me, and not a blessing.H1293 [13] And his motherH517 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Upon me [be] thy curse,H7045 my son:H1121 only obeyH8085(QalImpv) my voice,H6963 and goH3212(QalImpv) fetchH3947(QalImpv) me [them]. [14] And he went,H3212(QalImpf) and fetched,H3947(QalImpf) and broughtH935(HiphImpf) [them] to his mother:H517 and his motherH517 madeH6213(QalImpf) savoury meat,H4303 such as his fatherH1 loved.H157(QalPerf) [15] And RebekahH7259 tookH3947(QalImpf) goodlyH2532 raimentH899 of her eldestH1419 sonH1121 Esau,H6215 which [were] with her in the house,H1004 and put them uponH3847(HiphImpf) JacobH3290 her youngerH6996 son:H1121 [16] And she putH3847(HiphPerf) the skinsH5785 of the kidsH1423 of the goatsH5795 upon his hands,H3027 and upon the smoothH2513 of his neck:H6677 [17] And she gaveH5414(QalImpf) the savoury meatH4303 and the bread,H3899 which she had prepared,H6213(QalPerf) into the handH3027 of her sonH1121 Jacob.H3290 [18] And he cameH935(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 and said,H559(QalImpf) My father:H1 and he said,H559(QalImpf) Here [am] I; who [art] thou, my son?H1121 [19] And JacobH3290 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 I [am] EsauH6215 thy firstborn;H1060 I have doneH6213(QalPerf) according as thou badestH1696(PielPerf) me: arise,H6965(QalImpv) I pray thee, sitH3427(QalImpv) and eatH398(QalImpv) of my venison,H6718 that thy soulH5315 may blessH1288(PielImpf) me. [20] And IsaacH3327 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his son,H1121 How [is it] that thou hast foundH4672(QalInf) [it] so quickly,H4116(PielPerf) my son?H1121 And he said,H559(QalImpf) Because the LordH3068 thy GodH430 broughtH7136(HiphPerf) [it] to me.H6440 [21] And IsaacH3327 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Jacob,H3290 Come near,H5066(QalImpv) I pray thee, that I may feelH4184(QalImpf) thee, my son,H1121 whether thou [be] my veryH2088 sonH1121 EsauH6215 or not. [22] And JacobH3290 went nearH5066(QalImpf) unto IsaacH3327 his father;H1 and he feltH4959(QalImpf) him, and said,H559(QalImpf) The voiceH6963 [is] Jacob’sH3290 voice,H6963 but the handsH3027 [are] the handsH3027 of Esau.H6215 [23] And he discernedH5234(HiphPerf) him not, because his handsH3027 were hairy,H8163 as his brotherH251 Esau’sH6215 hands:H3027 so he blessedH1288(PielImpf) him. [24] And he said,H559(QalImpf) [Art] thou my very sonH1121 Esau?H6215 And he said,H559(QalImpf) I [am]. [25] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Bring [it] nearH5066(HiphImpv) to me, and I will eatH398(QalImpf) of my son’sH1121 venison,H6718 that my soulH5315 may blessH1288(PielImpf) thee. And he brought [it] nearH5066(HiphImpf) to him, and he did eat:H398(QalImpf) and he broughtH935(HiphImpf) him wine,H3196 and he drank.H8354(QalImpf) [26] And his fatherH1 IsaacH3327 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Come nearH5066(QalImpv) now, and kissH5401(QalImpv) me, my son.H1121 [27] And he came near,H5066(QalImpf) and kissedH5401(QalImpf) him: and he smelledH7306(HiphImpf) the smellH7381 of his raiment,H899 and blessedH1288(PielImpf) him, and said,H559(QalImpf) See,H7200(QalImpv) the smellH7381 of my sonH1121 [is] as the smellH7381 of a fieldH7704 which the LordH3068 hath blessed:H1288(PielPerf) [28] Therefore GodH430 giveH5414(QalImpf) thee of the dewH2919 of heaven,H8064 and the fatnessH4924 of the earth,H776 and plentyH7230 of cornH1715 and wine:H8492 [29] Let peopleH5971 serveH5647(QalImpf) thee, and nationsH3816 bow downH7812(HithImpf) to thee: beH1933(QalImpv) lordH1376 over thy brethren,H251 and let thy mother’sH517 sonsH1121 bow downH7812(HithImpf) to thee: cursedH779(QalPasPtc) [be] every one that cursethH779(QalActPtc) thee, and blessedH1288(QalPasPtc) [be] he that blessethH1288(PielPtc) thee. [30] And it came to pass, as soon as IsaacH3327 had made an endH3615(PielPerf) of blessingH1288(PielInf) Jacob,H3290 and JacobH3290 was yetH389 scarceH3318(QalInf) gone outH3318(QalPerf) from the presenceH6440 of IsaacH3327 his father,H1 that EsauH6215 his brotherH251 came inH935(QalPerf) from his hunting.H6718 [31] And he also had madeH6213(QalImpf) savoury meat,H4303 and brought itH935(HiphImpf) unto his father,H1 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 Let my fatherH1 arise,H6965(QalImpf) and eatH398(QalImpf) of his son’sH1121 venison,H6718 that thy soulH5315 may blessH1288(PielImpf) me. [32] And IsaacH3327 his fatherH1 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Who [art] thou? And he said,H559(QalImpf) I [am] thy son,H1121 thy firstbornH1060 Esau.H6215 [33] And IsaacH3327 trembledH2729(QalImpf) veryH1419 exceedingly,H3966 and said,H559(QalImpf) Who? whereH645 [is] he that hath takenH6679(QalPtc) venison,H6718 and broughtH935(HiphImpf) [it] me, and I have eatenH398(QalImpf) of all before thou camest,H935(QalImpf) and have blessedH1288(PielImpf) him? yea, [and] he shall be blessed.H1288(QalPasPtc) [34] And when EsauH6215 heardH8085(QalInf) the wordsH1697 of his father,H1 he criedH6817(QalImpf) with a greatH1419 and exceedingH3966 bitterH4751 cry,H6818 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 BlessH1288(PielImpv) me, [even] me also, O my father.H1 [35] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Thy brotherH251 cameH935(QalPerf) with subtilty,H4820 and hath taken awayH3947(QalImpf) thy blessing.H1293 [36] And he said,H559(QalImpf) Is not he rightlyH3588 namedH7121(QalPerf) Jacob?H3290 for he hath supplanted meH6117(QalImpf) theseH2088 two times:H6471 he took awayH3947(QalPerf) my birthright;H1062 and, behold, now he hath taken awayH3947(QalPerf) my blessing.H1293 And he said,H559(QalImpf) Hast thou not reservedH680(QalPerf) a blessingH1293 for me? [37] And IsaacH3327 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and saidH559(QalImpf) unto Esau,H6215 Behold, I have madeH7760(QalPerf) him thy lord,H1376 and all his brethrenH251 have I givenH5414(QalPerf) to him for servants;H5650 and with cornH1715 and wineH8492 have I sustainedH5564(QalPerf) him: and what shall I doH6213(QalImpf) nowH645 unto thee, my son?H1121 [38] And EsauH6215 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 Hast thou but oneH259 blessing,H1293 my father?H1 blessH1288(PielImpv) me, [even] me also, O my father.H1 And EsauH6215 lifted upH5375(QalImpf) his voice,H6963 and wept.H1058(QalImpf) [39] And IsaacH3327 his fatherH1 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thy dwellingH4186 shall be the fatnessH4924 of the earth,H776 and of the dewH2919 of heavenH8064 from above;H5920 [40] And by thy swordH2719 shalt thou live,H2421(QalImpf) and shalt serveH5647(QalImpf) thy brother;H251 and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion,H7300(HiphImpf) that thou shalt breakH6561(QalPerf) his yokeH5923 from off thy neck.H6677 [41] And EsauH6215 hatedH7852(QalImpf) JacobH3290 becauseH5921 of the blessingH1293 wherewithH834 his fatherH1 blessed him:H1288(PielPerf) and EsauH6215 saidH559(QalImpf) in his heart,H3820 The daysH3117 of mourningH60 for my fatherH1 are at hand;H7126(QalImpf) then will I slayH2026(QalImpf) my brotherH251 Jacob.H3290 [42] And these wordsH1697 of EsauH6215 her elderH1419 sonH1121 were toldH5046(HophImpf) to Rebekah:H7259 and she sentH7971(QalImpf) and calledH7121(QalImpf) JacobH3290 her youngerH6996 son,H1121 and saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thy brotherH251 Esau,H6215 as touching thee, doth comfortH5162(HithPtc) himself, [purposing] to killH2026(QalInf) thee. [43] Now therefore, my son,H1121 obeyH8085(QalImpv) my voice;H6963 and arise,H6965(QalImpv) fleeH1272(QalImpv) thou to LabanH3837 my brotherH251 to Haran;H2771 [44] And tarryH3427(QalPerf) with him a fewH259 days,H3117 untilH834 thy brother’sH251 furyH2534 turn away;H7725(QalImpf) [45] Until thy brother’sH251 angerH639 turn awayH7725(QalInf) from thee, and he forgetH7911(QalPerf) [that] which thou hast doneH6213(QalPerf) to him: then I will send,H7971(QalPerf) and fetchH3947(QalPerf) thee from thence: whyH4100 should I be deprivedH7921(QalImpf) also of you bothH8147 in oneH259 day?H3117 [46] And RebekahH7259 saidH559(QalImpf) to Isaac,H3327 I am wearyH6973(QalPerf) of my lifeH2416 becauseH6440 of the daughtersH1323 of Heth:H2845 if JacobH3290 takeH3947(QalActPtc) a wifeH802 of the daughtersH1323 of Heth,H2845 such as these [which are] of the daughtersH1323 of the land,H776 what goodH4100 shall my lifeH2416 do me?
