[1] Hear, Israel! You are to pass over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to the sky, [2] a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard say, “Who can stand before the sons of Anak?” [3] Know therefore today that Yahweh your God is he who goes over before you as a devouring fire. He will destroy them and he will bring them down before you. So you shall drive them out and make them perish quickly, as Yahweh has spoken to you. [4] Don’t say in your heart, after Yahweh your God has thrust them out from before you, “For my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land;” because Yahweh drives them out before you because of the wickedness of these nations. [5] Not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart do you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. [6] Know therefore that Yahweh your God doesn’t give you this good land to possess for your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people. [7] Remember, and don’t forget, how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. [8] Also in Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was angry with you to destroy you. [9] When I had gone up onto the mountain to receive the stone tablets, even the tablets of the covenant which Yahweh made with you, then I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water. [10] Yahweh delivered to me the two stone tablets written with God’s finger. On them were all the words which Yahweh spoke with you on the mountain out of the middle of the fire in the day of the assembly. [11] It came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights that Yahweh gave me the two stone tablets, even the tablets of the covenant. [12] Yahweh said to me, “Arise, get down quickly from here; for your people whom you have brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. They have quickly turned away from the way which I commanded them. They have made a molten image for themselves!” [13] Furthermore Yahweh spoke to me, saying, “I have seen these people, and behold, they are a stiff-necked people. [14] Leave me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under the sky; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.” [15] So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire. The two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. [16] I looked, and behold, you had sinned against Yahweh your God. You had made yourselves a molded calf. You had quickly turned away from the way which Yahweh had commanded you. [17] I took hold of the two tablets, and threw them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes. [18] I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sin which you sinned, in doing that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, to provoke him to anger. [19] For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which Yahweh was angry against you to destroy you. But Yahweh listened to me that time also. [20] Yahweh was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. [21] I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire, and crushed it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust. I threw its dust into the brook that descended out of the mountain. [22] At Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked Yahweh to wrath. [23] When Yahweh sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, “Go up and possess the land which I have given you,” you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God, and you didn’t believe him or listen to his voice. [24] You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day that I knew you. [25] So I fell down before Yahweh the forty days and forty nights that I fell down, because Yahweh had said he would destroy you. [26] I prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Lord Yahweh, don’t destroy your people and your inheritance that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. [27] Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Don’t look at the stubbornness of this people, nor at their wickedness, nor at their sin, [28] lest the land you brought us out from say, ‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land which he promised to them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.’ [29] Yet they are your people and your inheritance, which you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.”
King James Version
[1] Hear,H8085(QalImpv) O Israel:H3478 Thou [art] to pass overH5674(QalActPtc) JordanH3383 this day,H3117 to go inH935(QalInf) to possessH3423(QalInf) nationsH1471 greaterH1419 and mightierH6099 than thyself, citiesH5892 greatH1419 and fenced upH1219(QalPasPtc) to heaven,H8064 [2] A peopleH5971 greatH1419 and tall,H7311(QalActPtc) the childrenH1121 of the Anakims,H6062 whom thou knowest,H3045(QalPerf) and [of whom] thou hast heardH8085(QalPerf) [say], Who can standH3320(HithImpf) beforeH6440 the childrenH1121 of Anak!H6061 [3] UnderstandH3045(QalPerf) therefore this day,H3117 that the LordH3068 thy GodH430 [is] he which goeth overH5674(QalActPtc) beforeH6440 thee; [as] a consumingH398(QalActPtc) fireH784 he shall destroyH8045(HiphImpf) them, and he shall bring them downH3665(HiphImpf) before thy face:H6440 so shalt thou drive them out,H3423(HiphPerf) and destroyH6(HiphPerf) them quickly,H4118 as the LordH3068 hath saidH1696(PielPerf) unto thee. [4] SpeakH559(QalImpf) not thou in thine heart,H3824 after that the LordH3068 thy GodH430 hath cast them outH1920(QalInf) from beforeH6440 thee, saying,H559(QalInf) For my righteousnessH6666 the LordH3068 hath brought me inH935(HiphPerf) to possessH3423(QalInf) this land:H776 but for the wickednessH7564 of these nationsH1471 the LordH3068 doth drive them outH3423(HiphPtc) from beforeH6440 thee. [5] Not for thy righteousness,H6666 or for the uprightnessH3476 of thine heart,H3824 dost thou goH935(QalActPtc) to possessH3423(QalInf) their land:H776 but for the wickednessH7564 of these nationsH1471 the LordH3068 thy GodH430 doth drive them outH3423(HiphPtc) from beforeH6440 thee, and that he may performH6965(HiphInf) the wordH1697 which the LordH3068 swareH7650(NiphPerf) unto thy fathers,H1 Abraham,H85 Isaac,H3327 and Jacob.H3290 [6] UnderstandH3045(QalPerf) therefore, that the LordH3068 thy GodH430 givethH5414(QalActPtc) thee not this goodH2896 landH776 to possessH3423(QalInf) it for thy righteousness;H6666 for thou [art] a stiffneckedH6203 people.H5971 [7] Remember,H2142(QalImpv) [and] forgetH7911(QalImpf) not, how thou provokedst the LordH3068 thy GodH430 to wrathH7107(HiphPerf) in the wilderness:H4057 fromH4480 the dayH3117 that thou didst depart outH3318(QalPerf) of the landH776 of Egypt,H4714 until ye cameH935(QalInf) unto this place,H4725 ye have been rebelliousH4784(HiphPtc) againstH5973 the Lord.H3068 [8] Also in HorebH2722 ye provokedH7107 the LordH3068 to wrath,H7107(HiphPerf) so that the LordH3068 was angryH599(HithImpf) with you to have destroyedH8045(HiphInf) you. [9] When I was gone upH5927(QalInf) into the mountH2022 to receiveH3947(QalInf) the tablesH3871 of stone,H68 [even] the tablesH3871 of the covenantH1285 which the LordH3068 madeH3772(QalPerf) with you, then I abodeH3427(QalImpf) in the mountH2022 fortyH705 daysH3117 and fortyH705 nights,H3915 I neither did eatH398(QalPerf) breadH3899 nor drinkH8354(QalPerf) water:H4325 [10] And the LordH3068 deliveredH5414(QalImpf) unto me twoH8147 tablesH3871 of stoneH68 writtenH3789(QalPasPtc) with the fingerH676 of God;H430 and on them [was written] according to all the words,H1697 which the LordH3068 spakeH1696(PielPerf) with you in the mountH2022 out of the midstH8432 of the fireH784 in the dayH3117 of the assembly.H6951 [11] And it came to pass at the endH7093 of fortyH705 daysH3117 and fortyH705 nights,H3915 [that] the LordH3068 gaveH5414(QalPerf) me the twoH8147 tablesH3871 of stone,H68 [even] the tablesH3871 of the covenant.H1285 [12] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto me, Arise,H6965(QalImpv) get thee downH3381(QalImpv) quicklyH4118 from hence; for thy peopleH5971 which thou hast brought forthH3318(HiphPerf) out of EgyptH4714 have corruptedH7843(PielPerf) [themselves]; they are quicklyH4118 turned asideH5493(QalPerf) out of the wayH1870 which I commandedH6680(PielPerf) them; they have madeH6213(QalPerf) them a molten image.H4541 [13] Furthermore the LordH3068 spakeH559(QalImpf) unto me, saying,H559(QalInf) I have seenH7200(QalPerf) this people,H5971 and, behold, it [is] a stiffneckedH6203 people:H5971 [14] Let me alone,H7503(HiphImpv) that I may destroyH8045(HiphImpf) them, and blot outH4229(QalImpf) their nameH8034 from under heaven:H8064 and I will makeH6213(QalImpf) ofH854 thee a nationH1471 mightierH6099 and greaterH7227 than they. [15] So I turnedH6437(QalImpf) and came downH3381(QalImpf) from the mount,H2022 and the mountH2022 burnedH1197(QalActPtc) with fire:H784 and the twoH8147 tablesH3871 of the covenantH1285 [were] in my twoH8147 hands.H3027 [16] And I looked,H7200(QalImpf) and, behold, ye had sinnedH2398(QalPerf) against the LordH3068 your God,H430 [and] had madeH6213(QalPerf) you a moltenH4541 calf:H5695 ye had turned asideH5493(QalPerf) quicklyH4118 out of the wayH1870 which the LordH3068 had commandedH6680(PielPerf) you. [17] And I tookH8610(QalImpf) the twoH8147 tables,H3871 and castH7993(HiphImpf) them out ofH5921 my twoH8147 hands,H3027 and brakeH7665(PielImpf) them before your eyes.H5869 [18] And I fell downH5307(HithImpf) beforeH6440 the Lord,H3068 as at the first,H7223 fortyH705 daysH3117 and fortyH705 nights:H3915 I did neither eatH398(QalPerf) bread,H3899 nor drinkH8354(QalPerf) water,H4325 because of all your sinsH2403 which ye sinned,H2398(QalPerf) in doingH6213(QalInf) wickedlyH7451 in the sightH5869 of the Lord,H3068 to provoke him to anger.H3707(HiphInf) [19] For I was afraidH3025(QalPerf) ofH6440 the angerH639 and hot displeasure,H2534 wherewith the LordH3068 was wrothH7107(QalPerf) against you to destroyH8045(HiphInf) you. But the LordH3068 hearkenedH8085(QalImpf) unto me at that timeH6471 also. [20] And the LordH3068 was veryH3966 angryH599(HithPerf) with AaronH175 to have destroyedH8045(HiphInf) him: and I prayedH6419(HithImpf) for AaronH175 also the same time.H6256 [21] And I tookH3947(QalPerf) your sin,H2403 the calfH5695 which ye had made,H6213(QalPerf) and burntH8313(QalImpf) it with fire,H784 and stampedH3807(QalImpf) it, [and] groundH2912(QalInf) [it] very small,H3190(HiphInf) [even] until it was as smallH1854(QalPerf) as dust:H6083 and I castH7993(HiphImpf) the dustH6083 thereof into the brookH5158 that descended outH3381(QalActPtc) of the mount.H2022 [22] And at Taberah,H8404 and at Massah,H4532 and at Kibrothhattaavah,H6914 ye provoked the LordH3068 to wrath.H7107(HiphPtc) [23] Likewise when the LordH3068 sentH7971(QalInf) you from Kadeshbarnea,H6947 saying,H559(QalInf) Go upH5927(QalImpv) and possessH3423(QalImpv) the landH776 which I have givenH5414(QalPerf) you; then ye rebelledH4784(HiphImpf) against the commandmentH6310 of the LordH3068 your God,H430 and ye believedH539(HiphPerf) him not, nor hearkenedH8085(QalPerf) to his voice.H6963 [24] Ye have been rebelliousH4784(HiphPtc) against the LordH3068 from the dayH3117 that I knewH3045(QalInf) you. [25] Thus I fell downH5307(HithImpf) beforeH6440 the LordH3068 fortyH705 daysH3117 and fortyH705 nights,H3915 as I fell downH5307(HithPerf) [at the first]; because the LordH3068 had saidH559(QalPerf) he would destroyH8045(HiphInf) you. [26] I prayedH6419(HithImpf) therefore unto the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) O LordH136 God,H3069 destroyH7843(HiphImpf) not thy peopleH5971 and thine inheritance,H5159 which thou hast redeemedH6299(QalPerf) through thy greatness,H1433 which thou hast brought forthH3318(HiphPerf) out of EgyptH4714 with a mightyH2389 hand.H3027 [27] RememberH2142(QalImpv) thy servants,H5650 Abraham,H85 Isaac,H3327 and Jacob;H3290 lookH6437(QalImpf) not unto the stubbornnessH7190 of this people,H5971 nor to their wickedness,H7562 nor to their sin:H2403 [28] Lest the landH776 whence thou broughtest us outH3318(HiphPerf) say,H559(QalImpf) Because the LordH3068 was not ableH3201(QalInf) to bringH935(HiphInf) them into the landH776 which he promisedH1696(PielPerf) them, and because he hatedH8135 them, he hath brought them outH3318(HiphPerf) to slayH4191(HiphInf) them in the wilderness.H4057 [29] Yet they [are] thy peopleH5971 and thine inheritance,H5159 which thou broughtest outH3318(HiphPerf) by thy mightyH1419 powerH3581 and by thy stretched outH5186(QalPasPtc) arm.H2220
