[1] Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob): [2] Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, [3] Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, [4] Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. [5] All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already. [6] Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation. [7] The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them. [8] Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph. [9] He said to his people, “Behold,§ the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. [10] Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.” [11] Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses. [12] But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel. [13] The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve, [14] and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve. [15] The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah, [16] and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” [17] But the midwives feared God,§ and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive. [18] The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?” [19] The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” [20] God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty. [21] Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. [22] Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

[8] Now there arose upH6965(QalImpf) a newH2319 kingH4428 over Egypt,H4714 which knewH3045(QalPerf) not Joseph.H3130 [9] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto his people,H5971 Behold, the peopleH5971 of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 [are] moreH7227 and mightierH6099 than we: [10] Come on,H3051(QalImpv) let us deal wiselyH2449(HithImpf) with them; lest they multiply,H7235(QalImpf) and it come to pass, that, when there falleth outH7122(QalImpf) any war,H4421 theyH1931 joinH3254(NiphPerf) also unto our enemies,H8130(QalActPtc) and fightH3898(NiphPerf) against us, and [so] get them upH5927(QalPerf) out of the land.H776 [11] Therefore they did setH7760(QalImpf) over them taskmastersH4522 to afflictH6031(PielInf) them with their burdens.H5450 And they builtH1129(QalImpf) for PharaohH6547 treasureH4543 cities,H5892 PithomH6619 and Raamses.H7486 [12] But the more they afflictedH6031(PielImpf) them, the moreH3651 they multipliedH7235(QalImpf) and grew.H6555(QalImpf) And they were grievedH6973(QalImpf) becauseH6440 of the childrenH1121 of Israel.H3478 [13] And the EgyptiansH4714 madeH5647 the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478 to serveH5647(HiphImpf) with rigour:H6531 [14] And they madeH4843 their livesH2416 bitterH4843(PielImpf) with hardH7186 bondage,H5656 in morter,H2563 and in brick,H3843 and in all manner of serviceH5656 in the field:H7704 all their service,H5656 wherein they made them serve,H5647(QalPerf) [was] with rigour.H6531 [15] And the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 spakeH559(QalImpf) to the HebrewH5680 midwives,H3205(PielPtc) of which the nameH8034 of the oneH259 [was] Shiphrah,H8236 and the nameH8034 of the otherH8145 Puah:H6326 [16] And he said,H559(QalImpf) When ye do the office of a midwifeH3205(PielInf) to the Hebrew women,H5680 and seeH7200(QalPerf) [them] upon the stools;H70 if it [be] a son,H1121 then ye shall killH4191(HiphPerf) him: but if it [be] a daughter,H1323 then she shall live.H2425(QalPerf) [17] But the midwivesH3205(PielPtc) fearedH3372(QalImpf) God,H430 and didH6213(QalPerf) not as the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 commandedH1696(PielPerf) them, but savedH2421 the men childrenH3206 alive.H2421(PielImpf) [18] And the kingH4428 of EgyptH4714 calledH7121(QalImpf) for the midwives,H3205(PielPtc) and saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, WhyH4069 have ye doneH6213(QalPerf) this thing,H1697 and have savedH2421 the men childrenH3206 alive?H2421(PielImpf) [19] And the midwivesH3205(PielPtc) saidH559(QalImpf) unto Pharaoh,H6547 Because the HebrewH5680 womenH802 [are] not as the Egyptian women;H4713 for they [are] lively,H2422 and are deliveredH3205(QalPerf) ereH2962 the midwivesH3205(PielPtc) come inH935(QalImpf) unto them.
