[1] Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. [2] This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. [3] All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city. [4] Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to David’s city, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, [5] to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant. [6] While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth. [7] She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn. [8] There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. [9] Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. [10] The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. [11] For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Savior, who is Christⓘ the Lord. [12] This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.” [13] Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God and saying,
[14] “Glory to God in the highest,
on earth peace, good will toward men.” [15] When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” [16] They came with haste and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough. [17] When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child. [18] All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds. [19] But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. [20] The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them. [21] When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. [22] When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord [23] (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”),† [24] and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”† [25] Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. [26] It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.ⓘ [27] He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law, [28] then he received him into his arms and blessed God, and said,
[29] “Now you are releasing your servant, Master,
according to your word, in peace;
[30] for my eyes have seen your salvation,
[31] which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;
[32] a light for revelation to the nations,
and the glory of your people Israel.” [33] Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him. [34] Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. [35] Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” [36] There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, [37] and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn’t depart from the temple, worshiping with fastings and petitions night and day. [38] Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem. [39] When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. [40] The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. [41] His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover. [42] When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast; [43] and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it, [44] but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances. [45] When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him. [46] After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. [47] All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. [48] When they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.” [49] He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” [50] They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them. [51] And he went down with them and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. [52] And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

[1] AndG1161 it came to passG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) inG1722 thoseG1565 days,G2250 that there went outG1831(Aor2ActInd) a decreeG1378 fromG3844 CaesarG2541 Augustus,G828 that allG3956 the worldG3625 should be taxed.G583(PresMidPasInf) [2] ([And] thisG3778 taxingG582 wasG1096 firstG4413 madeG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) when CyreniusG2958 was governorG2230(PresActPtc) of Syria.G4947) [3] AndG2532 allG3956 wentG4198(ImpfMidPasDepInd) to be taxed,G583(PresPasInf) every oneG1538 intoG1519 his ownG2398 city.G4172 [4] AndG1161 JosephG2501 alsoG2532 went upG305(Aor2ActInd) fromG575 Galilee,G1056 out ofG1537 the cityG4172 of Nazareth,G3478 intoG1519 Judaea,G2449 untoG1519 the cityG4172 of David,G1138 whichG3748 is calledG2564(PresPasInd) Bethlehem;G965 (becauseG1223 heG846 wasG1511(PresInf) ofG1537 the houseG3624 andG2532 lineageG3965 of David:G1138) [5] To be taxedG583(AorMidInf) withG4862 MaryG3137 hisG846 espousedG3423(PerfPasPtc) wife,G1135 beingG5607(PresPtc) great with child.G1471 [6] AndG1161 so it was,G1096(Aor2MidDepInd) that, whileG1722 theyG846 wereG1511(PresInf) there,G1563 the daysG2250 were accomplishedG4130(AorPasInd) that sheG846 should be delivered.G5088(Aor2ActInf) [7] AndG2532 she brought forthG5088(Aor2ActInd) herG846 firstbornG4416 son,G5207 andG2532 wrappedG4683 himG846 in swaddling clothes,G4683(AorActInd) andG2532 laidG347(AorActInd) himG846 inG1722 a manger;G5336 becauseG1360 there wasG2258(ImpfInd) noG3756 roomG5117 for themG846 inG1722 the inn.G2646 [8] AndG2532 there wereG2258(ImpfInd) inG1722 the sameG846 countryG5561 shepherdsG4166 abiding in the field,G63(PresActPtc) keepingG5442(PresActPtc) watchG5438 overG1909 theirG846 flockG4167 by night.G3571 [9] And,G2532 lo,G2400(Aor2ActImpr) the angelG32 of the LordG2962 came uponG2186(Aor2ActInd) them,G846 andG2532 the gloryG1391 of the LordG2962 shone round aboutG4034(AorActInd) them:G846 andG2532 they were soreG3173 afraid.G5399(AorPasDepInd) [10] AndG2532 the angelG32 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto them,G846 FearG5399(PresMidPasDepImpr) not:G3361 for,G1063 behold,G2400(Aor2ActImpr) I bringG2097 youG5213 good tidingsG2097(PresMidInd) of greatG3173 joy,G5479 whichG3748 shall beG2071(FutInd) to allG3956 people.G2992 [11] ForG3754 unto youG5213 is bornG5088(AorPasInd) this dayG4594 inG1722 the cityG4172 of DavidG1138 a Saviour,G4990 whichG3739 isG2076(PresInd) ChristG5547 the Lord.G2962 [12] AndG2532 thisG5124 [shall be] a signG4592 unto you;G5213 Ye shall findG2147(FutActInd) the babeG1025 wrapped in swaddling clothes,G4683(PerfPasPtc) lyingG2749(PresMidPasDepPtc) inG1722 a manger.G5336 [13] AndG2532 suddenlyG1810 there wasG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) withG4862 the angelG32 a multitudeG4128 of the heavenlyG3770 hostG4756 praisingG134(PresActPtc) God,G2316 andG2532 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) [14] GloryG1391 to GodG2316 inG1722 the highest,G5310 andG2532 onG1909 earthG1093 peace,G1515 good willG2107 towardG1722 men.G444 [15] AndG2532 it came to pass,G1096(Aor2MidDepInd) asG5613 the angelsG32 were gone awayG565(Aor2ActInd) fromG575 themG846 intoG1519 heaven,G3772 the shepherdsG444 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) oneG240 toG4314 another,G240 Let usG1330 nowG1211 goG1330(Aor2ActSubj) even untoG2193 Bethlehem,G965 andG2532 seeG1492(Aor2ActSubj) thisG5124 thingG4487 which is come to pass,G1096(Perf2ActPtc) whichG3739 the LordG2962 hath made knownG1107(AorActInd) unto us.G2254 [16] AndG2532 they cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) with haste,G4692(AorActPtc) andG2532 foundG429(Aor2ActInd) Mary,G3137 andG2532 Joseph,G2501 andG2532 the babeG1025 lyingG2749(PresMidPasDepPtc) inG1722 a manger.G5336 [17] AndG1161 when they had seenG1492(Aor2ActPtc) [it], they made known abroadG1232(AorActInd) the sayingG4012 whichG3588 was toldG2980(AorPasPtc) themG846 concerningG4012 thisG5127 child.G3813 [18] AndG2532 allG3956 they that heardG191(AorActPtc) [it] wonderedG2296(AorActInd) atG4012 those things whichG3588 were toldG2980(AorPasPtc) themG4314 byG5259 the shepherds.G4166 [19] ButG1161 MaryG3137 keptG4933(ImpfActInd) allG3956 these things,G4487 and ponderedG4820(PresActPtc) [them] inG1722 herG846 heart.G2588 [20] AndG2532 the shepherdsG4166 returned,G1994(AorActInd) glorifyingG1392(PresActPtc) andG2532 praisingG134(PresActPtc) GodG2316 forG1909 all the thingsG3956 thatG3739 they had heardG191(AorActInd) andG2532 seen,G1492(Aor2ActInd) asG2531 it was toldG2980(AorPasInd) untoG4314 them.G846 [21] AndG2532 whenG3753 eightG3638 daysG2250 were accomplishedG4130(AorPasInd) for the circumcisingG4059(Aor2ActInf) of the child,G3813 hisG846 nameG3686 was calledG2564(AorPasInd) JESUS,G2424 whichG3588 was so namedG2564(AorPasPtc) ofG5259 the angelG32 beforeG4253 heG846 was conceivedG4815(AorPasInf) inG1722 the womb.G2836 [22] AndG2532 whenG3753 the daysG2250 of herG846 purificationG2512 accordingG2596 to the lawG3551 of MosesG3475 were accomplished,G4130(AorPasInd) they broughtG321(Aor2ActInd) himG846 toG1519 Jerusalem,G2414 to presentG3936(AorActInf) [him] to the Lord;G2962 [23] (AsG2531 it is writtenG1125(PerfPasInd) inG1722 the lawG3551 of the Lord,G2962 EveryG3956 maleG730 that openethG1272(PresActPtc) the wombG3388 shall be calledG2564(FutPasInd) holyG40 to the Lord;G2962) [24] AndG2532 to offerG1325(Aor2ActInf) a sacrificeG2378 accordingG2596 to that which is saidG2046(PerfPasPtc) inG1722 the lawG3551 of the Lord,G2962 A pairG2201 of turtledoves,G5167 orG2228 twoG1417 youngG3502 pigeons.G4058 [25] And,G2532 behold,G2400(Aor2ActImpr) there wasG2258(ImpfInd) a manG444 inG1722 Jerusalem,G2419 whoseG3739 nameG3686 [was] Simeon;G4826 andG2532 the sameG3778 manG444 [was] justG1342 andG2532 devout,G2126 waitingG4327(PresMidPasDepPtc) for the consolationG3874 of Israel:G2474 andG2532 the HolyG40 GhostG4151 wasG2258(ImpfInd) uponG1909 him.G846 [26] AndG2532 it wasG2258(ImpfInd) revealedG5537(PerfPasPtc) unto himG846 byG5259 the HolyG40 Ghost,G4151 that he shouldG1492 notG3361 seeG1492(Aor2ActInf) death,G2288 beforeG4250 he had seenG1492(Aor2ActSubj) the Lord’sG2962 Christ.G5547 [27] AndG2532 he cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) byG1722 the SpiritG4151 intoG1519 the temple:G2411 andG2532 when the parentsG1118 broughtG1521(Aor2ActInf) inG1722 the childG3813 Jesus,G2424 to doG4160(AorActInf) forG4012 himG846 afterG2596 the customG1480(PerfPasPtc) of the law,G3551 [28] ThenG2532 tookG1209 heG846 himG846 upG1209(AorMidDepInd) inG1519 hisG846 arms,G43 andG2532 blessedG2127(AorActInd) God,G2316 andG2532 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) [29] Lord,G1203 nowG3568 lettest thouG630 thyG4675 servantG1401 departG630(PresActInd) inG1722 peace,G1515 accordingG2596 to thyG4675 word:G4487 [30] ForG3754 mineG3450 eyesG3788 have seenG1492(Aor2ActInd) thyG4675 salvation,G4992 [31] WhichG3739 thou hast preparedG2090(AorActInd) beforeG2596 the faceG4383 of allG3956 people;G2992 [32] A lightG5457 toG1519 lightenG602 the Gentiles,G1484 andG2532 the gloryG1391 of thyG4675 peopleG2992 Israel.G2474 [33] AndG2532 JosephG2501 andG2532 hisG846 motherG3384 marvelledG2258(ImpfInd) atG1909 those things which were spokenG2980(PresPasPtc) ofG4012 him.G846 [34] AndG2532 SimeonG4826 blessedG2127(AorActInd) them,G846 andG2532 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) untoG4314 MaryG3137 hisG846 mother,G3384 Behold,G2400(Aor2ActImpr) thisG3778 [child] is setG2749(PresMidPasDepInd) forG1519 the fallG4431 andG2532 rising againG386 of manyG4183 inG1722 Israel;G2474 andG2532 forG1519 a signG4592 which shall be spoken against;G483(PresPasPtc) [35] (Yea,G1161 a swordG4501 shall pierce inG1722 Jerusalem.G2419 [39] AndG2532 whenG5613 they had performedG5055(AorActInd) all thingsG537 accordingG2596 to the lawG3551 of the Lord,G2962 they returnedG5290(AorActInd) intoG1519 Galilee,G1056 toG1519 their ownG846 cityG4172 Nazareth.G3478 [40] AndG1161 the childG3813 grew,G837(ImpfActInd) andG2532 waxed strongG2901(ImpfPasInd) in spirit,G4151 filledG4137(PresPasPtc) with wisdom:G4678 andG2532 the graceG5485 of GodG2316 wasG2258(ImpfInd) uponG1909 him.G846 [41] NowG2532 hisG846 parentsG1118 wentG4198(ImpfMidPasDepInd) toG1519 JerusalemG2419 everyG2596 yearG2094 at the feastG1859 of
