[1] Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, [2] during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. [3] He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins. [4] As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
‘Make ready the way of the Lord.
Make his paths straight.
[5] Every valley will be filled.
Every mountain and hill will be brought low.
The crooked will become straight,
and the rough ways smooth.
[6] All flesh will see God’s salvation.’ ”† [7] He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? [8] Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones! [9] Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” [10] The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?” [11] He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.” [12] Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?” [13] He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.” [14] Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?”He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.” [15] As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ, [16] John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire. [17] His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” [18] Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people, [19] but Herod the tetrarch,ⓘ being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s‡ wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, [20] added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison. [21] Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized and was praying. The sky was opened, [22] and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.” [23] Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years old, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, [24] the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, [25] the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, [26] the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, [27] the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, [28] the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, [29] the son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, [30] the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, [31] the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, [32] the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, [33] the son of Amminadab, the son of Aram,‡ the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, [34] the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, [35] the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, [36] the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, [37] the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, [38] the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

G2048 [3] And G2532 he came G2064 (Aor2ActInd) into G1519 all G3956 the country about G4066 Jordan, G2446 preaching G2784 (PresActPtc) the baptism G908 of repentance G3341 for G1519 the remission G859 of sins; G266 [4] as G5613 it is written G1125 (PerfPasInd) in G1722 the book G976 of the words G3056 of Esaias G2268 the prophet, G4396 saying, G3004 (PresActPtc)The voice G5456 of one crying G994 (PresActPtc) in G1722 the wilderness, G2048

Make G4160 (PresActImpr) his G846 paths G5147 straight. G2117
[5] Every G3956 valley G5327 shall be G2071 (FutInd) filled, G4137 (FutPasInd)
And G2532 every G3956 mountain G3735 and G2532 hill G1015 shall be brought low; G5013 (FutPasInd)
And G2532 the crooked G4646 shall be made G1519 straight, G2117
And G2532 the rough G5138 ways G3598 shall be made G1519 smooth; G3006
[6] And G2532 all G3956 flesh G4561 shall see G3700 (FutMidDepInd) the salvation G4992 of God. G2316
[7] Then G3767 said G3004 (ImpfActInd) he to the multitude G3793 that came forth G1607 (PresMidPasDepPtc) to be baptized G907 (AorPasInf) of G5259 him, G846 O generation G1081 of vipers, G2191 who G5101 hath warned G5263 (AorActInd) you G5213 to flee G5343 (Aor2ActInf) from G575 the wrath G3709 to come? G3195 (PresActPtc) [8] Bring forth G4160 (AorActImpr) therefore G3767 fruits G2590 worthy G514§ of repentance, G3341 and G2532 begin G756 (AorMidSubj) not G3361 to say G3004 (PresActInf) within G1722 yourselves, G1438 We have G2192 (PresActInd) Abraham G11 to our father: G3962 for G1063 I say G3004 (PresActInd) unto you, G5213 That G3754 God G2316 is able G1410 (PresMidPasDepInd) of G1537 these G5130 stones G3037 to raise up G1453 (AorActInf) children G5043 unto Abraham. G11 [9] And G1161 now G2235 also G2532 the axe G513 is laid G2749 (PresMidPasDepInd) unto G4314 the root G4491 of the trees: G1186 every G3956 tree G1186 therefore G3767 which bringeth G4160 not G3361 forth G4160 (PresActPtc) good G2570 fruit G2590 is hewn down, G1581 (PresPasInd) and G2532 cast G906 (PresPasInd) into G1519 the fire. G4442 [10] And G2532 the people G3793 asked G1905 (ImpfActInd) him, G846 saying, G3004 (PresActPtc) What G5101 shall we do G4160 (FutActInd) then? G3767 [11] He answereth G611 (AorPasDepPtc) and G1161 saith G3004 (PresActInd) unto them, G846 He that hath G2192 (PresActPtc) two G1417 coats, G5509 let him impart G3330 (Aor2ActImpr) to him that hath G2192 (PresActPtc) none; G3361 and G2532 he that hath G2192 (PresActPtc) meat, G1033 let him do G4160 (PresActImpr) likewise. G3668 [12] Then G1161 came G2064 (Aor2ActInd) also G2532 publicans G5057 to be baptized, G907 (AorPasInf) and G2532 said G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto G4314 him, G846 Master, G1320 what G5101 shall we do? G4160 (FutActInd) [13] And G1161 he said G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto G4314 them, G846 Exact G4238 (PresActInd) no G3367 more G4119 than G3844 that which is appointed G1299 (PerfPasPtc) you. G5213 [14] And G1161 the soldiers G4754 (PresMidPtc) likewise G2532 demanded G1905 (ImpfActInd) of him, G846 saying, G3004 (PresActPtc) And G2532 what G5101 shall we G2249 do? G4160 (FutActInd) And G2532 he said G2036 (Aor2ActInd) unto G4314 them, G846 Do violence G1286 (AorActSubj) to no man, G3367§ neither G3366 accuse any falsely; G4811 (AorActSubj) and G2532 be content G714 (PresPasImpr) with your G5216 wages. G3800§ [15] And G1161 as the people G2992 were in expectation, G4328 (PresActPtc)§ and G2532 all men G3956 mused G1260 (PresMidPasDepPtc)§ in G1722 their G846 hearts G2588 of G4012 John, G2491 whether G3379 he G846 were G1498 (PresOpt) the Christ, G5547 or not; G3379 [16] John G2491 answered, G611 (AorMidDepInd) saying G3004 (PresActPtc) unto them all, G537 I G1473 indeed G3303 baptize G907 (PresActInd) you G5209 with water; G5204 but G1161 one mightier than G2478 I G3450 cometh, G2064 (PresMidPasDepInd) the latchet G2438 of whose G3739 shoes G5266 I am G1510 (PresInd) not G3756 worthy G2425 to unloose: G3089 (AorActInf) he G846 shall baptize G907 (FutActInd) you G5209 with G1722 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 and G2532 with fire: G4442 [17] whose G3739 fan G4425 is in G1722 his G846 hand, G5495 and G2532 he will throughly purge G1245 (FutActInd) his G846 floor, G257 and G2532 will gather G4863 (FutActInd) the wheat G4621 into G1519 his G846 garner; G596 but G1161 the chaff G892 he will burn G2618 (FutActInd) with fire G4442 unquenchable. G762 [18] And G2532 many G4183 other G2087 things G4183 in his exhortation G3870 (PresActPtc) preached G2097 (ImpfMidInd) he unto the people. G2992 [19] But G1161 Herod G2264 the tetrarch, G5076 being reproved G1651 (PresPasPtc) by G5259 him G846 for G4012 Herodias G2266 his G846 brother G80 Philip’s G5376 wife, G1135 and G2532 for G4012 all G3956 the evils G4190 which G3739 Herod G2264 had done, G4160 (AorActInd) [20] added G4369 (AorActInd) yet G2532 this G5124 above G1909 all, G3956 that G2532 he shut up G2623 (AorActInd) John G2491 in G1722 prison.
