[1] Now about that time, King Herod stretched out his hands to oppress some of the assembly. [2] He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword. [3] When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This was during the days of unleavened bread. [4] When he had arrested him, he put him in prison and delivered him to four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. [5] Peter therefore was kept in the prison, but constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him. [6] The same night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains. Guards in front of the door kept the prison. [7] And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up, saying, “Stand up quickly!” His chains fell off his hands. [8] The angel said to him, “Get dressed and put on your sandals.” He did so. He said to him, “Put on your cloak and follow me.” [9] And he went out and followed him. He didn’t know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision. [10] When they were past the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him. [11] When Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I truly know that the Lord has sent out his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting.” [12] Thinking about that, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. [13] When Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. [14] When she recognized Peter’s voice, she didn’t open the gate for joy, but ran in and reported that Peter was standing in front of the gate. [15] They said to her, “You are crazy!” But she insisted that it was so. They said, “It is his angel.” [16] But Peter continued knocking. When they had opened, they saw him and were amazed. [17] But he, beckoning to them with his hand to be silent, declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. He said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place. [18] Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter. [19] When Herod had sought for him and didn’t find him, he examined the guards, then commanded that they should be put to death. He went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there. [20] Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. They came with one accord to him and, having made Blastus, the king’s personal aide, their friend, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. [21] On an appointed day, Herod dressed himself in royal clothing, sat on the throne, and gave a speech to them. [22] The people shouted, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” [23] Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he didn’t give God the glory. Then he was eaten by worms and died. [24] But the word of God grew and multiplied. [25] Barnabas and Saul returned to Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their service, also taking with them John who was called Mark.

thoughtG1380(ImpfActInd) he sawG991(PresActInf) a vision.G3705 [10] WhenG1161 they were pastG1330(Aor2ActPtc) the firstG4413 andG2532 the secondG1208 ward,G5438 they cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) untoG1909 the ironG4603 gateG4439 that leadethG5342(PresActPtc) untoG1519 the city;G4172 whichG3748 openedG455(AorPasInd) to themG846 of his own accord:G844 andG2532 they went out,G1831(Aor2ActPtc) and passed on throughG4281(Aor2ActInd) oneG3391 street;G4505 andG2532 forthwithG2112 the angelG32 departedG868(Aor2ActInd) fromG575 him.G846 [11] AndG2532 when PeterG4074 was comeG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) toG1722 himself,G1438 he said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) NowG3568 I knowG1492(PerfActInd) of a surety,G230 thatG3754 the LordG2962 hath sentG1821(AorActInd) hisG846 angel,G32 andG2532 hath deliveredG1807(Aor2MidInd) meG3165 out ofG1537 the handG5495 of Herod,G2264 andG2532 [from] allG3956 the expectationG4329 of the peopleG2992 of the Jews.G2453 [12] AndG5037 when he had consideredG4894(Aor2ActPtc) [the thing], he cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) toG1909 the houseG3614 of MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of John,G2491 whose surname wasG1941(PresPasPtc) Mark;G3138 whereG3757 manyG2425 wereG2258(ImpfInd) gathered namedG3686 Rhoda.G4498 [14] AndG2532 when she knewG1921(Aor2ActPtc) Peter’sG4074 voice,G5456 she openedG455(AorActInd) notG3756 the gateG4440 forG575 gladness,G5479 butG1161 ran in,G1532(Aor2ActPtc) and told howG518(AorActInd) PeterG4074 stoodG2476(PerfActInf) beforeG4253 the gate.G4440 [15] AndG1161 they saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) untoG4314 her,G846 Thou art mad.G3105(PresMidPasDepInd) ButG1161 she constantly affirmedG1340(ImpfMidPasDepInd) that it wasG2192(PresActInf) even so.G3779 ThenG1161 said they,G3004(ImpfActInd) It isG2076(PresInd) hisG846 angel.G32 [16] ButG1161 PeterG4074 continuedG1961(ImpfActInd) knocking:G2925(PresActPtc) andG1161 when they had openedG455(AorActPtc) [the door], and sawG1492(Aor2ActInd) him,G846 they were astonished.G1839(Aor2ActInd) [17] ButG1161 he, beckoningG2678(AorActPtc) unto themG846 with the handG5495 to hold their peace,G4601(PresActInf) declaredG1334(AorMidDepInd) unto themG846 howG4459 the LordG2962 had broughtG1806(Aor2ActInd) himG846 out ofG1537 the prison.G5438 AndG1161 he said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Go shewG518(AorActImpr) these thingsG5023 unto James,G2385 andG2532 to the brethren.G80 AndG2532 he departed,G1831(Aor2ActPtc) and wentG4198(AorPasDepInd) intoG1519 anotherG2087 place.G5117 [18] NowG1161 as soon as it wasG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) day,G2250 there wasG2258(ImpfInd) noG3756 smallG3641 stirG5017 amongG1722 the soldiers,G4757 whatG5101 was becomeG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) of Peter.G4074 [19] AndG1161 whenG1934 HerodG2264 had sought forG1934(AorActPtc) him,G846 andG2532 found himG2147(Aor2ActPtc) not,G3361 he examinedG350(AorActPtc) the keepers,G5441 and commandedG2753(AorActInd) that [they] should be put to death.G520(AorPasInf) AndG2532 he went downG2718(Aor2ActPtc) fromG575 JudaeaG2449 toG1519 Caesarea,G2542 and [there] abode.G1304(ImpfActInd) [20] AndG1161 HerodG2264 wasG2258(ImpfInd) highly displeasedG2371(PresActPtc) with them of TyreG5183 andG2532 Sidon:G4606 butG1161 they cameG3918(ImpfInd) with one accordG3661 toG4314 him,G846 and,G2532 having madeG3982 BlastusG986 the king’sG935 chamberlainG1909 their friend,G3982(AorActPtc) desiredG154(ImpfMidInd) peace;G1515 becauseG1223 theirG846 countryG5561 was nourishedG5142(PresPasInf) byG575 the king’sG937 [country]. [21] AndG1161 upon a setG5002 dayG2250 Herod,G2264 arrayedG1746(AorMidPtc) in royalG937 apparel,G2066 satG2523(AorActPtc) uponG1909 his throne,G968 andG2532 made an orationG1215(ImpfActInd) untoG4314 them.G846 [22] AndG1161 the peopleG1218 gave a shout,G2019(ImpfActInd) [saying, It is] the voiceG5456 of a god,G2316 andG2532 notG3756 of a man.G444 [23] AndG1161 immediatelyG3916 the angelG32 of the LordG2962 smoteG3960(AorActInd) him,G846 becauseG473 he gaveG1325(AorActInd) notG3756 GodG2316 the glory:G1391 andG2532 he wasG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) eaten of worms,G4662 and gave up the ghost.G1634(AorActInd) [24] ButG1161 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 grewG837(ImpfActInd) andG2532 multiplied.G4129(ImpfPasInd) [25] AndG1161 BarnabasG921 andG2532 SaulG4569 returnedG5290(AorActInd) fromG1537 Jerusalem,G2419 when they had fulfilledG4137(AorActPtc) [their] ministry,G1248 andG2532 took with themG4838(Aor2ActPtc) John,G2491 whose surname wasG1941(AorPasPtc) Mark.G3138
