[1] The first book I wrote, Theophilus, concerned all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, [2] until the day in which he was received up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. [3] To these he also showed himself alive after he suffered, by many proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about God’s Kingdom. [4] Being assembled together with them, he commanded them, “Don’t depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me. [5] For John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” [6] Therefore, when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you now restoring the kingdom to Israel?” [7] He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority. [8] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.” [9] When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. [10] While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, behold,§ two men stood by them in white clothing, [11] who also said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky, will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.” [12] Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. [13] When they had come in, they went up into the upper room where they were staying, that is Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. [14] All these with one accord continued steadfastly in prayer and supplication, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. [15] In these days, Peter stood up in the middle of the disciples (and the number of names was about one hundred twenty), and said, [16] “Brothers, it was necessary that this Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to those who took Jesus. [17] For he was counted with us, and received his portion in this ministry. [18] Now this man obtained a field with the reward for his wickedness; and falling headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines gushed out. [19] It became known to everyone who lived in Jerusalem that in their language that field was called ‘Akeldama,’ that is, ‘The field of blood.’ [20] For it is written in the book of Psalms,
‘Let his habitation be made desolate.
Let no one dwell in it;’†and,
‘Let another take his office.’† [21] “Of the men therefore who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, [22] beginning from the baptism of John to the day that he was received up from us, of these one must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” [23] They put forward two: Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. [24] They prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two you have chosen [25] to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.” [26] They drew lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was counted with the eleven apostles.

manyG4183 infallible proofs,G5039 being seenG3700(PresMidPasDepPtc) of themG846 fortyG5062 days,G2250 andG2532 speakingG3004(PresActPtc) of the things pertainingG4012 to the kingdomG932 of God:G2316 [4] And,G2532 being assembled togetherG4871(PresMidPasDepPtc) withG846 [them], commandedG3853(AorActInd) themG846 that they shouldG5563 notG3361 departG5563(PresPasInf) fromG575 Jerusalem,G2414 butG235 waitG4037(PresActInf) for the promiseG1860 of the Father,G3962 which,G3739 [saith he], ye have heardG191(AorActInd) of me.G3450 [5] ForG3754 JohnG2491 trulyG3303 baptizedG907(AorActInd) with together,G4905(Aor2ActPtc) they askedG1905(ImpfActInd) of him,G846 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Lord,G2962 wilt thouG600 atG1722 thisG5129 timeG5550 restore againG600(PresActInd) the kingdomG932 to Israel?G2474 [7] AndG1161 he saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) untoG4314 them,G846 It isG2076(PresInd) notG3756 for youG5216 to knowG1097(Aor2ActInf) the timesG5550 orG2228 the seasons,G2540 whichG3739 the FatherG3962 hath putG5087(Aor2MidInd) inG1722 his ownG2398 power.G1849 [8] ButG235 ye shall receiveG2983(FutMidDepInd) power,G1411 after that the HolyG40 GhostG4151 is comeG1904(Aor2ActPtc) uponG1909 you:G5209 andG2532 ye shall beG2071(FutInd) witnessesG3144 unto meG3427 bothG5037 inG1722 Jerusalem,G2419 andG2532 inG1722 allG3956 Judaea,G2449 andG2532 in Samaria,G4540 andG2532 untoG2193 the behold,G2400(Aor2ActImpr) twoG1417 menG435 stood byG3936(PlupfActInd) themG846 inG1722 whiteG3022 apparel;G2066 [11] WhichG3739 alsoG2532 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Ye menG435 of Galilee,G1057 whyG5101 stand yeG2476(PerfActInd) gazing upG1689(PresActPtc) intoG1519 heaven?G3772 this sameG3778 Jesus,G2424 whichG3588 is taken upG353(AorPasPtc) fromG575 youG5216 intoG1519 heaven,G3772 shallG2064 soG3779 comeG2064(FutMidDepInd) in like manner asG3739 ye have seenG2300(AorMidDepInd) himG846 goG4198(PresMidPasDepPtc) intoG1519 heaven.G3772 [12] ThenG5119 returned theyG5290(AorActInd) untoG1519 JerusalemG2419 fromG575 the mountG3735 calledG2564(PresPasPtc) Olivet,G1638 whichG3739 isG2076(PresInd) fromG1451 JerusalemG2419 a sabbathG4521 day’s journey.G2192(PresActPtc) [13] AndG2532 whenG3753 they were come in,G1525(Aor2ActInd) they went upG305(Aor2ActInd) intoG1519 an upper room,G5253 whereG3757 abodeG2258(ImpfInd) bothG5037 Peter,G4074 andG2532 James,G2385 andG2532 John,G2491 andG2532 Andrew,G406 Philip,G5376 andG2532 Thomas,G2381 Bartholomew,G918 andG2532 Matthew,G3156 JamesG2385 [the son] of Alphaeus,G256 andG2532 SimonG4613 Zelotes,G2208 andG2532 JudasG2455 [the brother] of James.G2385 [14] TheseG3778 allG3956 continuedG2258(ImpfInd) with one accordG3661 in prayerG4335 andG2532 supplication,G1162 withG4862 the women,G1135 andG2532 MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of Jesus,G2424 andG2532 withG4862 hisG846 brethren.G80 [15] AndG2532 inG1722 thoseG5025 daysG2250 PeterG4074 stood upG450(Aor2ActPtc) inG1722 the midstG3319 of the disciples,G3101 and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) (the numberG3793 of namesG3686 togetherG1909 wereG2258(ImpfInd) aboutG5613 an hundredG1540 and twenty,G1501) [16] MenG435 [and] brethren,G80 thisG5026 scriptureG1124 mustG1163(ImpfInd) needs have been fulfilled,G4137(AorPasInf) whichG3739 the HolyG40 GhostG4151 byG1223 the mouthG4750 of DavidG1138 spake beforeG4277(Aor2ActInd) concerningG4012 Judas,G2455 whichG3588 wasG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) guideG3595 to them that tookG4815(Aor2ActPtc) Jesus.G2424 [17] ForG3754 he wasG2258(ImpfInd) numberedG2674(PerfPasPtc) withG4862 us,G2254 andG2532 had obtainedG2975(Aor2ActInd) partG2819 of thisG5026 ministry.G1248 [18] NowG3303 this manG3778 purchasedG2932(AorMidDepInd) a fieldG5564 withG1537 the rewardG3408 of iniquity;G93 andG2532 fallingG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) headlong,G4248 he burst asunderG2997(AorActInd) in the midst,G3319 andG2532 allG3956 hisG846 bowelsG4698 gushed out.G1632(AorPasInd) [19] AndG2532 it wasG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) knownG1110 unto allG3956 the dwellersG2730(PresActPtc) at Jerusalem;G2419 insomuch asG5620 thatG1565 fieldG5564 is calledG2564(AorPasInf) in theirG846 properG2398 tongue,G1258 Aceldama,G184 that is to say,G5123(PresInd) The fieldG5564 of blood.G129 [20] ForG1063 it is writtenG1125(PerfPasInd) inG1722 the bookG976 of Psalms,G5568 LetG1096 hisG846 habitationG1886 beG1096(AorPasDepImpr) desolate,G2048 andG2532 letG2077(PresImpr) no manG3361 dwellG2730(PresActPtc) therein:G1722 andG2532 hisG846 bishoprickG1984 letG2983 anotherG2087 take.G2983(Aor2ActOpt) [21] WhereforeG3767 of theseG5130 menG435 which have companiedG4905(Aor2ActPtc) with usG2254 allG3956 the timeG5550 thatG1722 the LordG2962 JesusG2424 wentG1831 inG1525(Aor2ActInd) andG2532 outG1831(Aor2ActInd) amongG1909 us,G2248 [22] BeginningG756(AorMidPtc) fromG575 the baptismG908 of John,G2491 untoG2193 that same dayG2250 thatG3739 he was taken upG353(AorPasInd) fromG575 us,G2257 mustG1163(PresInd) oneG1520 be ordainedG1096(Aor2MidDepInf) to be a witnessG3144 withG4862 usG2254 of hisG846 resurrection.G386 [23] AndG2532 they appointedG2476(Aor2ActInd) two,G1417 JosephG2501 calledG2564(PresPasPtc) Barsabas,G923 whoG3739 was surnamedG1941(AorPasInd) Justus,G2459 andG2532 Matthias.G3159 [24] AndG2532 they prayed,G4336(AorMidDepPtc) and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Thou,G4771 Lord,G2962 which knowest the heartsG2589 of allG3956 [men], shewG322(AorActImpr) whetherG3739 ofG1537 theseG5130 twoG1417 thou hast chosen,G1586(AorMidInd) [25] That he may takeG2983(Aor2ActInf) partG2819 of thisG5026 ministryG1248 andG2532 apostleship,G651 fromG1537 whichG3739 JudasG2455 by transgression fell,G3845(Aor2ActInd) that he might goG4198(AorPasDepInf) toG1519 his ownG2398 place.G5117 [26] AndG2532 they gave forthG1325(AorActInd) theirG846 lots;G2819 andG2532 the lotG2819 fellG4098(Aor2ActInd) uponG1909 Matthias;G3159 andG2532 he was numberedG4785(AorPasInd) withG3326 the elevenG1733 apostles.G652
