[1] While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples. [2] He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” [3] He said, “Into what then were you baptized?”They said, “Into John’s baptism.” [4] Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.”‡ [5] When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [6] When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke with other languages and prophesied. [7] They were about twelve men in all. [8] He entered into the synagogue and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom. [9] But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. [10] This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. [11] God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul, [12] so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out. [13] But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.” [14] There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this. [15] The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?” [16] The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. [17] This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. [18] Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds. [19] Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.ⓘ [20] So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty. [21] Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” [22] Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. [23] About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way. [24] For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen, [25] whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth. [26] You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands. [27] Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.” [28] When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” [29] The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel. [30] When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him. [31] Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater. [32] Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together. [33] They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people. [34] But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” [35] When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus? [36] Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash. [37] For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess. [38] If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another. [39] But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly. [40] For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.” [41] When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

- NU omits Christ.
- The 50,000 pieces of silver here probably referred to 50,000 drachmas. If so, the value of the burned books was equivalent to about 160 man-years of wages for agricultural laborers

[1] AndG1161 it came to pass,G1096(Aor2MidDepInd) that, while ApollosG625 wasG1511(PresInf) atG1722 Corinth,G2882 PaulG3972 having passedG1330(Aor2ActPtc) through the upperG510 coastsG3313 cameG2064(Aor2ActInf) toG1519 Ephesus:G2181 andG2532 findingG2147(Aor2ActPtc) certainG5100 disciples,G3101 [2] He saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) untoG4314 them,G846 Have ye receivedG2983(Aor2ActInd) the HolyG40 GhostG4151 since ye believed?G4100(AorActPtc) AndG1161 they saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) untoG4314 him,G846 We haveG191 not so much asG3761 heardG191(AorActInd) whetherG1487 there be anyG2076(PresInd) HolyG40 Ghost.G4151 [3] AndG5037 he saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) untoG4314 them,G846 UntoG1519 whatG5101 thenG3767 were ye baptized?G907(AorPasInd) AndG1161 they said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) UntoG1519 John’sG2491 baptism.G908 [4] ThenG1161 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) Paul,G3972 JohnG2491 verilyG3303 baptizedG907(AorActInd) with the baptismG908 of repentance,G3341 sayingG3004(PresActPtc) unto the people,G2992 thatG2443 they should believeG4100(AorActSubj) onG1519 him which should comeG2064(PresMidPasDepPtc) afterG3326 him,G846 that is,G5123(PresInd) onG1519 ChristG5547 Jesus.G2424 [5] WhenG1161 they heardG191(AorActPtc) [this], they were baptizedG907(AorPasInd) inG1519 the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 Jesus.G2424 [6] AndG2532 when PaulG3972 had laidG2007 [his] handsG5495 uponG2007(Aor2ActPtc) them,G846 the HolyG40 GhostG4151 cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) onG1909 them;G846 andG5037 they spakeG2980(ImpfActInd) with tongues,G1100 andG2532 prophesied.G4395(ImpfActInd) [7] AndG1161 allG3956 the menG435 wereG2258(ImpfInd) aboutG5616 twelve.G1177 [8] AndG1161 he wentG1525(Aor2ActPtc) intoG1519 the synagogue,G4864 and spake boldlyG3955(ImpfMidPasDepInd) for the spaceG1909 of threeG5140 months,G3376 disputingG1256(PresMidPasDepPtc) andG2532 persuadingG3982(PresActPtc) the things concerningG4012 the kingdomG932 of God.G2316 [9] ButG1161 whenG5613 diversG5100 were hardened,G4645(ImpfPasInd) andG2532 believed not,G544(ImpfActInd) but spake evilG2551(PresActPtc) of that wayG3598 beforeG1799 the multitude,G4128 he departedG868(Aor2ActPtc) fromG575 them,G846 and separatedG873(AorActInd) the disciples,G3101 disputingG1256(PresMidPasDepPtc) dailyG2596 inG1722 the schoolG4981 of oneG5100 Tyrannus.G5181 [10] AndG1161 thisG5124 continuedG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) by the spaceG1909 of twoG1417 years;G2094 soG5620 that allG3956 they which dwelt inG2730(PresActPtc) AsiaG773 heardG191(AorActInf) the wordG3056 of the LordG2962 Jesus,G2424 bothG5037 JewsG2453 andG2532 Greeks.G1672 [11] AndG5037 GodG2316 wroughtG4160(ImpfActInd) specialG3756 miraclesG1411 byG1223 the handsG5495 of Paul:G3972 [12] SoG2532 that fromG575 hisG846 bodyG5559 were broughtG2018(PresPasInf) untoG1909 the sickG770(PresActPtc) handkerchiefsG4676 orG2228 aprons,G4612 andG2532 the diseasesG3554 departedG525(PresPasInf) fromG575 them,G846 andG5037 the evilG4190 spiritsG4151 wentG1831(PresMidPasDepInf) out ofG575 them.G846 [13] ThenG1161 certainG5100 ofG575 the vagabondG4022(PresMidPasDepPtc) Jews,G2453 exorcists,G1845 took upon themG2021(AorActInd) to callG3687(PresActInf) overG1909 them which hadG2192(PresActPtc) evilG4190 spiritsG4151 the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 Jesus,G2424 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) We adjureG3726(PresActInd) youG5209 by JesusG2424 whomG3739 PaulG3972 preacheth.G2784(PresActInd) [14] AndG1161 there wereG2258(ImpfInd) sevenG2033 sonsG5207 of [one] Sceva,G4630 a Jew,G2453 [and] chief of the priests,G749 which didG4160(PresActPtc) so.G5124 [15] AndG1161 the evilG4190 spiritG4151 answeredG611(AorPasDepPtc) and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) JesusG2424 I know,G1097(PresActInd) andG2532 PaulG3972 I know;G1987(PresMidPasDepInd) butG1161 whoG5101 areG2075(PresInd) ye?G5210 [16] AndG2532 the manG444 inG1722 whomG3739 the evilG4190 spiritG4151 wasG2258(ImpfInd) leapedG2177(PresMidPasDepPtc) onG1909 them,G846 andG2532 overcameG2634(AorActPtc) them,G846 and prevailedG2480(AorActInd) againstG2596 them,G846 soG5620 that they fledG1628(Aor2ActInf) out ofG1537 thatG1565 houseG3624 nakedG1131 andG2532 wounded.G5135(PerfPasPtc) [17] AndG1161 thisG5124 wasG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) knownG1110 to allG3956 the JewsG2453 andG5037 GreeksG1672 alsoG2532 dwellingG2730(PresActPtc) at Ephesus;G2181 andG2532 fearG5401 fellG1968(Aor2ActInd) onG1909 themG846 all,G3956 andG2532 the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424 was magnified.G3170(ImpfPasInd) [18] AndG5037 manyG4183 that believedG4100(PerfActPtc) came,G2064(ImpfMidPasDepInd) and confessed,G1843(PresMidPtc) andG2532 shewedG312(PresActPtc) theirG846 deeds.G4234 [19] ManyG2425 of them alsoG1161 which usedG4238(AorActPtc) curious artsG4021 broughtG4851 their booksG976 together,G4851(Aor2ActPtc) and burned themG2618(ImpfActInd) beforeG1799 allG3956 [men]: andG2532 they countedG4860(AorActInd) the priceG5092 of them,G846 andG2532 foundG2147(Aor2ActInd) [it] fiftyG4002 thousandG3461 [pieces] of silver.G694 [20] SoG3779 mightilyG2596 grewG837(ImpfActInd) the wordG3056 of GodG2962 andG2532 prevailed.G2480(ImpfActInd) [21] AfterG1161 these thingsG5023 were ended,G4137(AorPasInd) PaulG3972 purposedG5087(Aor2MidInd) inG1722 the spirit,G4151 when he had passed throughG1330(Aor2ActPtc) MacedoniaG3109 andG2532 Achaia,G882 to goG4198(PresMidPasDepInf) toG1519 Jerusalem,G2419 saying,G2036(Aor2ActPtc) AfterG3754 IG3165 have beenG1096(Aor2MidDepInf) there,G1563 IG3165 mustG1163(PresInd) alsoG2532 seeG1492(Aor2ActInf) Rome.G4516 [22] SoG1161 he sentG649(AorActPtc) intoG1519 MacedoniaG3109 twoG1417 of them that ministeredG1247(PresActPtc) unto him,G846 TimotheusG5095 andG2532 Erastus;G2037 but he himselfG846 stayedG1907(Aor2ActInd) inG1519 AsiaG773 for a season.G5550 [23] AndG1161 the sameG1565 timeG2540 there aroseG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) noG3756 smallG3641 stirG5017 aboutG4012 that way.G3598 [24] ForG1063 a certainG5100 [man] namedG3686 Demetrius,G1216 a silversmith,G695 which madeG4160(PresActPtc) silverG693 shrinesG3485 for Diana,G735 broughtG3930(ImpfMidInd) noG3756 smallG3641 gainG2039 unto the craftsmen;G5079 [25] WhomG3739 he called togetherG4867(AorActPtc) with the workmenG2040 ofG4012 like occupation,G5108 andG2532 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Sirs,G435 ye knowG1987(PresMidPasDepInd) thatG3754 byG1537 thisG5026 craftG2039 we haveG2076(PresInd) ourG2257 wealth.G2142 [26] MoreoverG2532 ye seeG2334(PresActInd) andG2532 hear,G191(PresActInd) thatG3754 notG3756 aloneG3440 at Ephesus,G2181 butG235 almostG4975 throughout allG3956 Asia,G773 thisG3778 PaulG3972 hath persuadedG3982(AorActPtc) and turned awayG3179(AorActInd) muchG2425 people,G3793 sayingG3004(PresActPtc) thatG3754 they beG1526(PresInd) noG3756 gods,G2316 whichG3588 are madeG1096(PresMidPasDepPtc) withG1223 hands:G5495 [27] SoG1161 that notG3756 onlyG3440 thisG5124 ourG2254 craftG3313 is in dangerG2793(PresActInd) to be setG2064(Aor2ActInf) atG1519 nought;G557 butG235 alsoG2532 that the templeG2411 of the greatG3173 goddessG2299 DianaG735 should be despised,G1519 andG1161 herG846 magnificenceG3168 shouldG3195(PresActInf) be destroyed,G2507(PresPasInf) whomG3739 allG3650 AsiaG773 andG2532 the worldG3625 worshippeth.G4576(PresMidPasDepInd) [28] AndG1161 when they heardG191(AorActPtc) [these sayings], they wereG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) fullG4134 of wrath,G2372 andG2532 cried out,G2896(ImpfActInd) saying,G3004(PresActPtc) GreatG3173 [is] DianaG735 of the Ephesians.G2180 [29] AndG2532 the wholeG3650 cityG4172 was filledG4130(AorPasInd) with confusion:G4799 andG5037 having caughtG4884(AorActPtc) GaiusG1050 andG2532 Aristarchus,G708 men of Macedonia,G3110 Paul’sG3972 companions in travel,G4898 they rushedG3729(AorActInd) with one accordG3661 intoG1519 the theatre.G2302 [30] AndG1161 whenG1014 PaulG3972 wouldG1014(PresMidPasDepPtc) have enteredG1525(Aor2ActInf) inG1519 unto the people,G1218 the disciplesG3101 sufferedG1439(ImpfActInd) himG846 not.G3756 [31] AndG1161 certainG5100 of the chief of Asia,G775 which wereG5607(PresPtc) hisG846 friends,G5384 sentG3992(AorActPtc) untoG4314 him,G846 desiringG3870(ImpfActInd) [him] that he wouldG1325 notG3361 adventureG1325(Aor2ActInf) himselfG1438 intoG1519 the theatre.G2302 [32] SomeG243 thereforeG3767 criedG2896(ImpfActInd) one thing,G5100 and some another:G243 forG1063 the assemblyG1577 wasG2258(ImpfInd) confused;G4797(PerfPasPtc) andG2532 the more partG4119 knewG1492(PlupfActInd) notG3756 whereforeG5101 they were come together.G4905(PlupfActInd) [33] AndG1161 they drewG4264(AorActInd) AlexanderG223 out ofG1537 the multitude,G3793 the JewsG2453 puttingG4261 himG846 forward.G4261(AorActPtc) AndG1161 AlexanderG223 beckonedG2678(AorActPtc) with the hand,G5495 and wouldG2309(ImpfActInd) have made his defenceG626(PresMidPasDepInf) unto the people.G1218 [34] ButG1161 when they knewG1921(Aor2ActPtc) thatG3754 he wasG2076(PresInd) a Jew,G2453 allG3956 withG1537 oneG3391 voiceG5456 aboutG5613 the spaceG1909 of twoG1417 hoursG5610 cried out,G2896(PresActPtc) GreatG3173 [is] DianaG735 of the Ephesians.G2180 [35] AndG1161 when the townclerkG1122 had appeasedG2687(AorActPtc) the people,G3793 he said,G5346(PresInd) [Ye] menG435 of Ephesus,G2180 whatG5101 manG444 is thereG2076(PresInd) thatG3739 knowethG1097(PresActInd) notG3756 how that the cityG4172 of the EphesiansG2180 isG5607(PresPtc) a worshipperG3511 of the greatG3173 goddessG2299 Diana,G735 andG2532 of the [image] which fell down from Jupiter?G1356 [36] SeeingG5607(PresPtc) thenG3767 that these thingsG5130 cannot be spoken against,G368 yeG5209 oughtG1163(PresPtc) to beG5225(PresActInf) quiet,G2687(PerfPasPtc) andG2532 to doG4238(PresActInf) nothingG3367 rashly.G4312 [37] ForG1063 ye have brought hitherG71(Aor2ActInd) theseG5128 men,G435 which are neitherG3777 robbers of churches,G2417 nor yetG3777 blasphemersG987(PresActPtc) of yourG5216 goddess.G2299 [38] WhereforeG3303 ifG1487 Demetrius,G1216 andG2532 the craftsmenG5079 which are withG4862 him,G846 haveG2192(PresActInd) a matterG3056 againstG4314 any man,G5100 the lawG60 is open,G71(PresPasInd) andG2532 there areG1526(PresInd) deputies:G446 let them impleadG1458(PresActImpr) one another.G240 [39] ButG1161 ifG1487 ye enquireG1934(PresActInd) any thingG5100 concerningG4012 other matters,G2087 it shall be determinedG1956(FutPasInd) inG1722 a lawfulG1772 assembly.G1577 [40] ForG1063 we are in dangerG2793(PresActInd) to be called in questionG1458(PresPasInf) forG4012 this day’sG4594 uproar,G4714 there beingG5225(PresActPtc) noG3367 causeG158 wherebyG4012 we mayG1410(FutMidDepInd) giveG591(Aor2ActInf) an accountG3056 of thisG5026 concourse.G4963 [41] AndG2532 when he hadG2036 thusG5023 spoken,G2036(Aor2ActPtc) he dismissedG630(AorActInd) the assembly.G1577
