[1] When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band. [2] Embarking in a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to places on the coast of Asia, we put to sea, Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica being with us. [3] The next day, we touched at Sidon. Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him permission to go to his friends and refresh himself. [4] Putting to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. [5] When we had sailed across the sea which is off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia. [6] There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us on board. [7] When we had sailed slowly many days, and had come with difficulty opposite Cnidus, the wind not allowing us further, we sailed under the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone. [8] With difficulty sailing along it we came to a certain place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea. [9] When much time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous because the Fast had now already gone by, Paul admonished them [10] and said to them, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” [11] But the centurion gave more heed to the master and to the owner of the ship than to those things which were spoken by Paul. [12] Because the haven was not suitable to winter in, the majority advised going to sea from there, if by any means they could reach Phoenix and winter there, which is a port of Crete, looking southwest and northwest. [13] When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to shore. [14] But before long, a stormy wind beat down from shore, which is called Euroclydon.§ [15] When the ship was caught and couldn’t face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along. [16] Running under the lee of a small island called Clauda, we were able, with difficulty, to secure the boat. [17] After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along. [18] As we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw things overboard. [19] On the third day, they threw out the ship’s tackle with their own hands. [20] When neither sun nor stars shone on us for many days, and no small storm pressed on us, all hope that we would be saved was now taken away. [21] When they had been long without food, Paul stood up in the middle of them and said, “Sirs, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete and have gotten this injury and loss. [22] Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. [23] For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the God whose I am and whom I serve, [24] saying, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ [25] Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe God, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me. [26] But we must run aground on a certain island.” [27] But when the fourteenth night had come, as we were driven back and forth in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors surmised that they were drawing near to some land. [28] They took soundings and found twenty fathoms. After a little while, they took soundings again, and found fifteen fathoms. [29] Fearing that we would run aground on rocky ground, they let go four anchors from the stern, and wished for daylight. [30] As the sailors were trying to flee out of the ship and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they would lay out anchors from the bow, [31] Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these stay in the ship, you can’t be saved.” [32] Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the boat and let it fall off. [33] While the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you wait and continue fasting, having taken nothing. [34] Therefore I beg you to take some food, for this is for your safety; for not a hair will perish from any of your heads.” [35] When he had said this and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all; then he broke it and began to eat. [36] Then they all cheered up, and they also took food. [37] In all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship. [38] When they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea. [39] When it was day, they didn’t recognize the land, but they noticed a certain bay with a beach, and they decided to try to drive the ship onto it. [40] Casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time untying the rudder ropes. Hoisting up the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach. [41] But coming to a place where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground. The bow struck and remained immovable, but the stern began to break up by the violence of the waves. [42] The soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim out and escape. [43] But the centurion, desiring to save Paul, stopped them from their purpose, and commanded that those who could swim should throw themselves overboard first to go toward the land; [44] and the rest should follow, some on planks and some on other things from the ship. So they all escaped safely to the land.

AndG5037 the nextG2087 [day] we touchedG2609(Aor2PasDepSubj) atG1519 Sidon.G4605 AndG5037 JuliusG2457 courteouslyG5364 entreatedG5530(AorMidDepPtc) Paul,G3972 and gave [him] libertyG2010(AorActInd) to goG4198(AorPasDepPtc) untoG4314 his friendsG5384 to refresh himself.G5177(Aor2ActInf) [4] AndG2547 when we had launchedG321(AorPasPtc) from thence,G2547 we sailed underG5284(AorActInd) Cyprus,G2954 becauseG1223 the windsG417 wereG1511(PresInf) contrary.G1727 [5] AndG5037 when we had sailed overG1277(AorActPtc) the seaG3989 ofG2596 CiliciaG2791 andG2532 Pamphylia,G3828 we cameG2718(Aor2ActInd) toG1519 Myra,G3460 [a city] of Lycia.G3073 [6] And thereG2546 the centurionG1543 foundG2147(Aor2ActPtc) a shipG4143 of AlexandriaG222 sailingG4126(PresActPtc) intoG1519 Italy;G2482 and he putG1688(AorActInd) usG2248 therein.G1519 [7] AndG1161 when we had sailed slowlyG1020(PresActPtc) manyG2425 days,G2250 andG2532 scarceG3433 were comeG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) over againstG2596 Cnidus,G2834 the windG417 notG3361 sufferingG4330(PresActPtc) us,G2248 we sailed underG5284(AorActInd) Crete,G2914 over againstG2596 Salmone;G4534 [8] And,G5037 hardlyG3433 passingG3881(PresMidPasDepPtc) it,G846 cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) untoG1519 aG5100 placeG5117 which is calledG2564(PresPasPtc) The fairG2570 havens;G2568 nighG1451 whereuntoG3739 wasG2258(ImpfInd) the cityG4172 [of] Lasea.G2996 [9] NowG1161 when muchG2425 timeG5550 was spent,G1230(Aor2MidDepPtc) andG2532 when sailingG4144 wasG5607(PresPtc) nowG2235 dangerous,G2000 becauseG1223 the fastG3521 wasG3928 nowG2532 alreadyG2235 past,G3928(Perf2ActInf) PaulG3972 admonishedG3867(ImpfActInd) [them], [10] And saidG3004(PresActPtc) unto them,G846 Sirs,G435 I perceiveG2334(PresActInd) thatG3754 this voyageG4144 will beG3195(PresActInf) withG3326 hurtG5196 andG2532 muchG4183 damage,G2209 notG3756 onlyG3440 of the ladingG5414 andG2532 ship,G4143 butG235 alsoG2532 of ourG2257 lives.G5590 [11] NeverthelessG1161 the centurionG1543 believedG3982(ImpfPasInd) the masterG2942 andG2532 the owner of the ship,G3490 moreG3123 thanG2228 those things which were spokenG3004(PresPasPtc) byG5259 Paul.G3972 [12] AndG1161 becauseG5225 the havenG3040 wasG5225(PresActPtc) not commodiousG428 toG4314 winter in,G3915 the more partG4119 advisedG1012 to departG321(AorPasInf) thence also,G2547 ifG1513 by any meansG4458 they mightG1410(PresMidPasDepOpt) attainG2658(AorActPtc) toG1519 Phenice,G5405 [and there] to winter;G3914(AorActInf) [which is] an havenG3040 of Crete,G2914 and liethG991(PresActPtc) towardG2596 the south westG3047 andG2532 north west.G5566 [13] AndG1161 when the south windG3558 blew softly,G5285(AorActPtc) supposingG1380(AorActPtc) that they had obtainedG2902(PerfActInf) [their] purpose,G4286 loosingG142(AorActPtc) [thence], they sailedG3881(ImpfMidPasDepInd) close byG788 Crete.G2914 [14] ButG1161 notG3756 longG4183 afterG3326 there aroseG906(Aor2ActInd) againstG2596 itG846 a tempestuousG5189 wind,G417 calledG2564(PresPasPtc) Euroclydon.G2148 [15] AndG1161 when the shipG4143 was caught,G4884(AorPasPtc) andG2532 couldG1410(PresMidPasDepPtc) notG3361 bear up intoG503(PresActInf) the wind,G417 we let [her] drive.G1929(Aor2ActPtc) [16] AndG1161 running underG5295(Aor2ActPtc) a certainG5100 islandG3519 which is calledG2564(PresPasPtc) Clauda,G2802 we hadG2480 muchG3433 workG2480(AorActInd) to come byG4031 the boat:G4627 [17] WhichG3739 when they had taken up,G142(AorActPtc) they usedG5530(ImpfMidPasDepInd) helps,G996 undergirdingG5269(PresActPtc) the ship;G4143 and,G5037 fearingG5399(PresMidPasDepPtc) lestG3361 they should fallG1601(Aor2ActSubj) intoG1519 the quicksands,G4950 strakeG5465(AorActPtc) sail,G4632 and soG3779 were driven.G5342(ImpfPasInd) [18] AndG1161 weG2257 being exceedinglyG4971 tossed with a tempest,G5492(PresPasPtc) the nextG1836 [day] they lightened the ship;G1546 [19] AndG2532 the thirdG5154 [day] we cast outG4496(AorActInd) with our own handsG849 the tacklingG4631 of the ship.G4143 [20] AndG1161 when neitherG3383 sunG2246 norG3383 starsG798 inG1909 manyG4119 daysG2250 appeared,G2014(PresActPtc) andG5037 noG3756 smallG3641 tempestG5494 lay onG1945(PresMidPasDepPtc) [us], allG3956 hopeG1680 that weG2248 should be savedG4982(PresPasInf) wasG4014 thenG3063 taken away.G4014(ImpfPasInd) [21] ButG1161 afterG5225(PresActPtc) longG4183 abstinenceG776 PaulG3972 stood forthG2476(AorPasPtc) inG1722 the midstG3319 of them,G846 and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Sirs,G5599 ye shouldG1163(ImpfInd) have hearkenedG3980(AorActPtc) unto me,G3427 and notG3361 have loosedG321(PresPasInf) fromG575 Crete,G2914 andG5037 to have gainedG2770(AorActInf) thisG5026 harmG5196 andG2532 loss.G2209 [22] AndG2532 nowG3569 I exhortG3867(PresActInd) youG5209 to be of good cheer:G2114(PresActInf) forG1063 there shall beG2071(FutInd) noG3762 lossG580 of [any man’s] lifeG5590 amongG1537 you,G5216 butG4133 of the ship.G4143 [23] ForG1063 there stood byG3936(Aor2ActInd) meG3427 thisG5026 nightG3571 the angelG32 of God,G2316 whoseG3739 I am,G1510(PresInd) andG2532 whomG3739 I serve,G3000(PresActInd) [24] Saying,G3004(PresActPtc) FearG5399(PresMidPasDepImpr) not,G3361 Paul;G3972 thouG4571 mustG1163(PresInd) be brought beforeG3936(Aor2ActInf) Caesar:G2541 and,G2532 lo,G2400(Aor2ActImpr) GodG2316 hath givenG5483(PerfMidPasDepInd) theeG4671 allG3956 them that sailG4126(PresActPtc) withG3326 thee.G4675 [25] Wherefore,G1352 sirs,G435 be of good cheer:G2114(PresActImpr) forG1063 I believeG4100(PresActInd) God,G2316 thatG3754 itG3779 shall beG2071(FutInd) evenG2596 asG5158 it was toldG2980(PerfPasInd) me.G3427 [26] HowbeitG1161 weG2248 mustG1163(PresInd) be castG1601(Aor2ActInf) uponG1519 a certainG5100 island.G3520 [27] ButG1161 whenG5613 the fourteenthG5065 nightG3571 was come,G1096(Aor2MidDepInd) as weG2257 were driven up and downG1308(PresPasPtc) inG1722 Adria,G99 aboutG2596 midnightG3319 the shipmenG3492 deemedG5282(ImpfActInd) that theyG846 drew nearG4317(PresActInf) to someG5100 country;G5561 [28] AndG2532 sounded,G1001(AorActPtc) and foundG2147(Aor2ActInd) [it] twentyG1501 fathoms:G3712 andG1161 when they had goneG1339(AorActPtc) a little further,G1024 they soundedG1001(AorActPtc) again,G3825 andG2532 foundG2147(Aor2ActInd) [it] fifteenG1178 fathoms.G3712 [29] ThenG5037 fearingG5399(PresMidPasDepPtc) lestG3381 we should have fallenG1601(Aor2ActSubj) uponG1519 rocks,G5117 they castG4496(AorActPtc) fourG5064 anchorsG45 out ofG1537 the stern,G4403 and wishedG2172(ImpfMidPasDepInd) for the day.G2250 [30] AndG1161 as the shipmenG3492 were aboutG2212(PresActPtc) to fleeG5343(Aor2ActInf) out ofG1537 the ship,G4143 whenG2532 they had let downG5465(AorActPtc) the boatG4627 intoG1519 the sea,G2281 under colourG4392 as thoughG5613 they wouldG3195(PresActPtc) have castG1614(PresActInf) anchorsG45 out ofG1537 the foreship,G4408 [31] PaulG3972 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) to the centurionG1543 andG2532 to the soldiers,G4757 ExceptG3362 theseG3778 abideG3306(AorActSubj) inG1722 the ship,G4143 yeG5210 cannotG3756 be saved.G4982(AorPasInf) [32] ThenG5119 the soldiersG4757 cut offG609(AorActInd) the ropesG4979 of the boat,G4627 andG2532 letG1439(AorActInd) herG846 fall off.G1601(Aor2ActInf) [33] AndG1161 whileG891 the dayG2250 was comingG1096(PresMidPasDepInf) on,G3195(ImpfActInd) PaulG3972 besoughtG3870(ImpfActInd) [them] allG537 to takeG3335(Aor2ActInf) meat,G5160 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) This dayG4594 is the fourteenthG5065 dayG2250 that ye have tarriedG4328(PresActPtc) and continuedG1300(PresActInd) fasting,G777 having takenG4355(Aor2MidPtc) nothing.G3367 [34] WhereforeG1352 I prayG3870(PresActInd) youG5209 to takeG4355(Aor2ActInf) [some] meat:G5160 forG1063 thisG5124 isG5225(PresActInd) forG4314 yourG5212 health:G4991 forG1063 there shallG4098 notG3762 an hairG2359 fallG4098(FutMidDepInd) fromG1537 the headG2776 of anyG3762 of you.G5216 [35] AndG1161 when he had thusG5023 spoken,G2036(Aor2ActPtc) he tookG2983(Aor2ActPtc) bread,G740 and gave thanksG2168(AorActInd) to GodG2316 in presenceG1799 of them all:G3956 andG2532 when he had brokenG2806(AorActPtc) [it], he beganG756(AorMidDepInd) to eat.G2068(PresActInf) [36] ThenG1161 wereG1096 theyG846 allG3956 of good cheer,G2115 and theyG4355 alsoG2532 tookG4355(Aor2MidInd) [some] meat.G5160 [37] AndG1161 we wereG2258(ImpfInd) in allG3956 inG1722 the shipG4143 two hundredG1250 threescoreG1440 and sixteenG1803 souls.G5590 [38] AndG1161 when they had eatenG5160 enough,G2880(AorPasPtc) they lightenedG2893(ImpfActInd) the ship,G4143 and cast outG1544(PresMidPtc) the wheatG4621 intoG1519 the sea.G2281 [39] AndG1161 whenG3753 it wasG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) day,G2250 they knewG1921(ImpfActInd) notG3756 the land:G1093 butG1161 they discoveredG2657(ImpfActInd) a certainG5100 creekG2859 withG2192(PresActPtc) a shore,G123 intoG1519 the whichG3739 they were minded,G1011(AorMidDepInd) ifG1487 it were possible,G1410(PresMidPasDepOpt) to thrust inG1856(AorActInf) the ship.G4143 [40] AndG2532 when they had taken upG4014(Aor2ActPtc) the anchors,G45 they committedG1439(ImpfActInd) [themselves] untoG1519 the sea,G2281 andG260 loosedG447(Aor2ActPtc) the rudderG4079 bands,G2202 andG2532 hoised upG1869(AorActPtc) the mainsailG736 to the wind,G4154(PresActPtc) and madeG2722(ImpfActInd) towardG1519 shore.G123 [41] AndG1161 fallingG4045(Aor2ActPtc) intoG1519 a placeG5117 where two seas met,G1337 they ranG2027 the shipG3491 aground;G2027(AorActInd) andG2532 the forepartG4408 stuck fast,G2043(AorActPtc) and remainedG3306(AorActInd) unmoveable,G761 butG1161 the hinder partG4403 was brokenG3089(ImpfPasInd) withG5259 the violenceG970 of the waves.G2949 [42] AndG1161 the soldiers’G4757 counselG1012 wasG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) toG2443 killG615(PresActSubj) the prisoners,G1202 lestG3361 any of themG5100 should swim out,G1579(AorActPtc) and escape.G1309(Aor2ActOpt) [43] ButG1161 the centurion,G1543 willingG1014(PresMidPasDepPtc) to saveG1295(AorActInf) Paul,G3972 keptG2967(AorActInd) themG846 from [their] purpose;G1013 andG5037 commandedG2753(AorActInd) that they which couldG1410(PresMidPasDepPtc) swimG2860(PresActInf) should castG641(AorActPtc) [themselves] firstG4413 [into the sea], and getG1826(PresInf) toG1909 land:G1093 [44] AndG2532 the rest,G3062 someG3739 onG1909 boards,G4548 andG1161 someG3739 onG1909 [broken pieces] ofG575 the ship.G4143 AndG2532 soG3779 it came to pass,G1096(Aor2MidDepInd) that they escapedG1295 allG3956 safeG1295(AorPasInf) toG1909 land.G1093
