[1] Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. [2] Paul, as was his custom, went in to them; and for three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures, [3] explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.” [4] Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas: of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women. [5] But the unpersuaded Jews took along some wicked men from the marketplace and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people. [6] When they didn’t find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers§ before the rulers of the city, crying, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here also, [7] whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!” [8] The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things. [9] When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go. [10] The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue. [11] Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. [12] Many of them therefore believed; also of the prominent Greek women, and not a few men. [13] But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there likewise, agitating the multitudes. [14] Then the brothers immediately sent out Paul to go as far as to the sea, and Silas and Timothy still stayed there. [15] But those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens. Receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him very quickly, they departed. [16] Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols. [17] So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him. [18] Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also were conversing with him. Some said, “What does this babbler want to say?”Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign deities,” because he preached Jesus and the resurrection. [19] They took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is, which you are speaking about? [20] For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean.” [21] Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing. [22] Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said, “You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things. [23] For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription: ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ What therefore you worship in ignorance, I announce to you. [24] The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands. [25] He isn’t served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath and all things. [26] He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons and the boundaries of their dwellings, [27] that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. [28] ‘For in him we live, move, and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’ [29] Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and design of man. [30] The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all people everywhere should repent, [31] because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.” [32] Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, “We want to hear you again concerning this.” [33] Thus Paul went out from among them. [34] But certain men joined with him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

comingG3854(Aor2MidDepPtc) [thither] wentG549(ImpfInd) intoG1519 the synagogueG4864 of the Jews.G2453 [11] TheseG3778 wereG2258(ImpfInd) more nobleG2104 than those inG1722 Thessalonica,G2332 in that awayG1821(AorActInd) PaulG3972 to goG4198(PresMidPasDepInf) as it wereG5613 toG1909 the sea:G2281 butG1161 SilasG4609 andG2532 TimotheusG5095 abodeG5278 thereG1563 still.G5278(ImpfActInd) [15] AndG1161 they that conductedG2525(PresActPtc) PaulG3972 broughtG71(Aor2ActInd) himG846 untoG2193 Athens:G116 andG2532 receivingG2983(Aor2ActPtc) a commandmentG1785 untoG4314 SilasG4609 andG2532 Athens,G116 hisG846 spiritG4151 was stirredG3947(ImpfPasInd) inG1722 him,G846 when he sawG2334(PresActPtc) the cityG4172 wholly givenG5607(PresPtc) to idolatry.G2712 [17] ThereforeG3767 disputed heG1256(ImpfMidPasDepInd) inG1722 the synagogueG4864 with the Jews,G2453 andG2532 with the devout persons,G4576(PresMidPasDepPtc) andG2532 inG1722 the marketG58 dailyG2596 withG4314 them that met with him.G3909(PresActPtc) [18] ThenG1161 certainG5100 philosophersG5386 of the Epicureans,G1946 andG2532 of the Stoicks,G4770 encounteredG4820(ImpfActInd) him.G846 AndG2532 someG5100 said,G3004(ImpfActInd) WhatG5101 willG302 thisG3778 babblerG4691 say?G3004(PresActInf) other some, He seemethG1380(PresActInd) to beG1511(PresInf) a setter forthG2604 of strangeG3581 gods:G1140 becauseG3754 he preachedG2097(ImpfMidInd) unto themG846 Jesus,G2424 andG2532 the resurrection.G386 [19] AndG5037 they tookG1949(Aor2MidDepPtc) him,G846 and brought himG71(Aor2ActInd) untoG1909 Areopagus,G697 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) MayG1410(PresMidPasDepInd) we knowG1097(Aor2ActInf) whatG5101 thisG3778 newG2537 doctrine,G1322 whereofG5259 thouG4675 speakest,G2980(PresPasPtc) [is]? [20] ForG1063 thou bringestG1533(PresActInd) certainG5100 strange thingsG3579(PresActPtc) toG1519 ourG2257 ears:G189 we wouldG1014(PresMidPasDepInd) knowG1097(Aor2ActInf) thereforeG3767 whatG5101 these thingsG5023 mean.G302 [21] (ForG1161 allG3956 the AtheniansG117 andG2532 strangersG3581 whichG3588 were thereG1927(PresActPtc) spent their timeG2119(ImpfActInd) inG1519 nothingG3762 else,G2087 but eitherG2228 to tell,G3004(PresActInf) orG2532 to hearG191(PresActInf) someG5100 new thing.G2537) [22] ThenG1161 PaulG3972 stoodG2476(AorPasPtc) inG1722 the midstG3319 of Mars’ hill,G697 and said,G5346(ImpfInd) [Ye] menG435 of Athens,G117 I perceiveG2334(PresActInd) thatG5613 inG2596 all thingsG3956 yeG5209 are too superstitious.G1174 [23] ForG1063 as I passed by,G1330(PresMidPasDepPtc) andG2532 beheldG333(PresActPtc) yourG5216 devotions,G4574 I foundG2147(Aor2ActInd) an altarG1041 with thisG1722 inscription,G1924(PlupfPasInd) TO THE UNKNOWNG57 GOD.G2316 WhomG3739 thereforeG3767 ye ignorantlyG50(PresActPtc) worship,G2151(PresActInd) himG5126 declareG2605(PresActInd) IG1473 unto you.G5213 [24] GodG2316 that madeG4160(AorActPtc) the worldG2889 andG2532 all thingsG3956 therein,G1722 seeing that heG3778 isG5225(PresActPtc) LordG2962 of heavenG3772 andG2532 earth,G1093 dwellethG2730(PresActInd) notG3756 inG1722 templesG3485 made with hands;G5499 [25] NeitherG3761 is worshippedG2323(PresPasInd) withG5259 men’sG444 hands,G5495 as though he neededG4326(PresMidPasDepPtc) any thing,G5100 seeing heG846 givethG1325(PresActPtc) to allG3956 life,G2222 andG2532 breath,G4157 andG2596 all things;G3956 [26] AndG5037 hath madeG4160(AorActInd) ofG1537 oneG1520 bloodG129 allG3956 nationsG1484 of menG444 for to dwellG2730(PresActInf) onG1909 allG3956 the faceG4383 of the earth,G1093 and hath determinedG3724(AorActPtc) the timesG2540 before appointed,G4384(PerfPasPtc) andG2532 the boundsG3734 of theirG846 habitation;G2733 [27] That they should seekG2212(PresActInf) the Lord,G2962 ifG1487 haplyG686 they might feelG5584(AorActOpt) after him,G846 andG2532 find him,G2147(Aor2ActOpt) thoughG2544 he beG5225(PresActPtc) notG3756 farG3112 fromG575 everyG1538 oneG1520 of us:G2257 [28] ForG1063 inG1722 himG846 we live,G2198(PresActInd) andG2532 move,G2795(PresPasInd) andG2532 have our being;G2070(PresInd) asG5613 certainG5100 alsoG2532 of yourG5209 ownG2596 poetsG4163 have said,G2046(PerfActInd) ForG1063 we areG2070(PresInd) alsoG2532 hisG5120 offspring.G1085 [29] Forasmuch thenG3767 as we areG5225(PresActPtc) the offspringG1085 of God,G2316 we oughtG3784(PresActInd) notG3756 to thinkG3543(PresActInf) that the GodheadG2304 isG1511(PresInf) likeG3664 unto gold,G5557 orG2228 silver,G696 orG2228 stone,G3037 gravenG5480 by artG5078 andG2532 man’sG444 device.G1761 [30] AndG3303 the timesG5550 of this ignoranceG52 GodG2316 winked at;G5237(AorActPtc) but nowG3569 commandethG3853(PresActInd) allG3956 menG444 every whereG3837 to repent:G3340(PresActInf) [31] BecauseG1360 he hath appointedG2476(AorActInd) a day,G2250 inG1722 the whichG3739 he willG3195(PresActInd) judgeG2919(PresActInf) the worldG3625 inG1722 righteousnessG1343 byG1722 [that] manG435 whomG3739 he hath ordained;G3724(AorActInd) [whereof] he hath givenG3930(Aor2ActPtc) assuranceG4102 unto allG3956 [men], in that he hath raisedG450(AorActPtc) himG846 fromG1537 the dead.G3498 [32] AndG1161 when they heardG191(AorActPtc) of the resurrectionG386 of the dead,G3498 someG3303 mocked:G5512(ImpfActInd) andG1161 others said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) We will hearG191(FutMidDepInd) theeG4675 againG3825 ofG4012 thisG5127 [matter].
