[1] So Pilate then took Jesus and flogged him. [2] The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment. [3] They kept saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and they kept slapping him. [4] Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” [5] Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the man!” [6] When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, “Crucify! Crucify!”Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him.” [7] The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.” [8] When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid. [9] He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. [10] Pilate therefore said to him, “Aren’t you speaking to me? Don’t you know that I have power to release you and have power to crucify you?” [11] Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.” [12] At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you aren’t Caesar’s friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!” [13] When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement”, but in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.” [14] Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about the sixth hour.ⓘ He said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” [15] They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!”Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!” [16] So then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away. [17] He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”, [18] where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle. [19] Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” [20] Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. [21] The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘he said, “I am King of the Jews.” ’ ” [22] Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” [23] Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout. [24] Then they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says,
“They parted my garments among them.
They cast lots for my clothing.”† [25] But standing by Jesus’ cross were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. [26] Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” [27] Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home. [28] After this, Jesus, seeing‡ that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty!” [29] Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth. [30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. [31] Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies wouldn’t remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. [32] Therefore the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with him; [33] but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. [34] However, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. [35] He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe. [36] For these things happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “A bone of him will not be broken.”† [37] Again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they pierced.”† [38] After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away Jesus’ body. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore and took away his body. [39] Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred Roman pounds.ⓘ [40] So they took Jesus’ body, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. [41] Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb in which no man had ever yet been laid. [42] Then, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day (for the tomb was near at hand), they laid Jesus there.

PilateG4091 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto them,G846 TakeG2983(Aor2ActImpr) yeG5210 him,G846 andG2532 crucifyG4717(AorActImpr) [him]: forG1063 IG1473 findG2147(PresActInd) noG3756 faultG156 inG1722 him.G846 [7] The JewsG2453 answeredG611(AorMidDepInd) him,G846 WeG2249 haveG2192(PresActInd) a law,G3551 andG2532 byG2596 ourG2257 lawG3551 he oughtG3784(PresActInd) to die,G599(Aor2ActInf) becauseG3754 he madeG4160(AorActInd) himselfG1438 the SonG5207 of God.G2316 [8] WhenG3753 PilateG4091 thereforeG3767 heardG191(AorActInd) thatG5126 saying,G3056 he wasG5399 the moreG3123 afraid;G5399(AorPasDepInd) [9] AndG2532 wentG1525(Aor2ActInd) againG3825 intoG1519 the judgment hall,G4232 andG2532 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto Jesus,G2424 WhenceG4159 artG1488(PresInd) thou?G4771 ButG1161 JesusG2424 gaveG1325(AorActInd) himG846 noG3756 answer.G612 [10] ThenG3767 saithG3004(PresActInd) PilateG4091 unto him,G846 Speakest thouG2980(PresActInd) notG3756 unto me?G1698 knowest thouG1492(PerfActInd) notG3756 thatG3754 I haveG2192(PresActInd) powerG1849 to crucifyG4717(AorActInf) thee,G4571 andG2532 haveG2192(PresActInd) powerG1849 to releaseG630(AorActInf) thee?G4571 [11] JesusG2424 answered,G611(AorMidDepInd) Thou couldest haveG2192(ImpfActInd) noG3756 powerG1849 [at all] againstG3762 me,G1700 exceptG1508 it wereG2258(ImpfInd) givenG1325(PerfPasPtc) theeG4671 from above:G509 thereforeG5124 he that deliveredG3860(PresActPtc) meG3165 unto theeG4671 hathG2192(PresActInd) the greaterG3187 sin.G266 [12] And fromG1537 thenceforthG5127 PilateG4091 soughtG2212(ImpfActInd) to releaseG630(AorActInf) him:G846 butG1161 the JewsG2453 cried out,G2896(ImpfActInd) saying,G3004(PresActPtc) IfG1437 thou letG630 this manG5126 go,G630(AorActSubj) thou artG1488(PresInd) notG3756 Caesar’sG2541 friend:G5384 whosoeverG3956 makethG4160(PresActPtc) himselfG846 a kingG935 speaketh againstG483(PresActInd) Caesar.G2541 [13] When PilateG4091 thereforeG3767 heardG191(AorActPtc) thatG5126 saying,G3056 he broughtG71(Aor2ActInd) JesusG2424 forth,G1854 andG2532 sat downG2523(AorActInd) inG1909 the judgment seatG968 inG1519 a placeG5117 that is calledG3004(PresPasPtc) the Pavement,G3038 butG1161 in the Hebrew,G1447 Gabbatha.G1042 [14] AndG1161 it wasG2258(ImpfInd) the preparationG3904 of the passover,G3957 andG1161 aboutG5616 the sixthG1623 hour:G5610 andG2532 he saithG3004(PresActInd) unto the Jews,G2453 BeholdG2396 yourG5216 King!G935 [15] ButG1161 they cried out,G2905(AorActInd) Away withG142(AorActImpr) [him], away withG142(AorActImpr) [him], crucifyG4717(AorActImpr) him.G846 PilateG4091 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto them,G846 Shall I crucifyG4717(FutActInd) yourG5216 King?G935 The chief priestsG749 answered,G611(AorMidDepInd) We haveG2192(PresActInd) noG3756 kingG935 butG1508 Caesar.G2541 [16] ThenG5119 delivered heG3860(AorActInd) himG846 thereforeG3767 unto themG846 toG2443 be crucified.G4717(AorPasSubj) AndG1161 they tookG3880(Aor2ActInd) Jesus,G2424 andG2532 led [him] away.G520(Aor2ActInd) [17] AndG2532 he bearingG941(PresActPtc) hisG846 crossG4716 went forthG1831(Aor2ActInd) intoG1519 a placeG5117 calledG3004(PresPasPtc) [the place] of a skull,G2898 whichG3739 is calledG3004(PresPasInd) in the HebrewG1447 Golgotha:G1115 [18] WhereG3699 they crucifiedG4717(AorActInd) him,G846 andG2532 twoG1417 otherG243 withG3326 him,G846 on either side one,G2532 andG1161 JesusG2424 in the midst.G3319 [19] AndG1161 PilateG4091 wroteG1125(AorActInd) a title,G5102 andG2532 putG5087(AorActInd) [it] onG1909 the cross.G4716 AndG1161 the writingG1125(PerfPasPtc) was,G2258(ImpfInd) JESUSG2424 OF NAZARETHG3480 THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWS.G2453 [20] ThisG5126 titleG5102 thenG3767 readG314(Aor2ActInd) manyG4183 of the Jews:G2453 forG3754 the placeG5117 whereG3699 JesusG2424 was crucifiedG4717(AorPasInd) wasG2258(ImpfInd) nighG1451 to the city:G4172 andG2532 it wasG2258(ImpfInd) writtenG1125(PerfPasPtc) in Hebrew,G1447 [and] Greek,G1676 [and] Latin.G4515 [21] ThenG3767 saidG3004(ImpfActInd) the chief priestsG749 of the JewsG2453 to Pilate,G4091 WriteG1125(PresActImpr) not,G3361 The KingG935 of the Jews;G2453 butG235 thatG3754 heG1565 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) I amG1510(PresInd) KingG935 of the Jews.G2453 [22] PilateG4091 answered,G611(AorMidDepInd) WhatG3739 I have writtenG1125(PerfActInd) I have written.G1125(PerfActInd) [23] ThenG3767 the soldiers,G4757 whenG3753 they had crucifiedG4717(AorActInd) Jesus,G2424 tookG2983(Aor2ActInd) hisG846 garments,G2440 andG2532 madeG4160(AorActInd) fourG5064 parts,G3313 to everyG1538 soldierG4757 a part;G3313 and alsoG2532 [his] coat:G5509 nowG1161 the coatG5509 wasG2258(ImpfInd) without seam,G729 wovenG5307 fromG1537 the topG509 throughout.G1223 [24] They saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) thereforeG3767 amongG4314 themselves,G240 Let usG4977 notG3361 rendG4977(AorActSubj) it,G846 butG235 cast lotsG2975(Aor2ActSubj) forG4012 it,G846 whoseG5101 it shall be:G2071(FutInd) thatG2443 the scriptureG1124 might be fulfilled,G4137(AorPasSubj) whichG3588 saith,G3004(PresActPtc) They partedG1266(AorMidInd) myG3450 raimentG2440 among them,G1438 andG2532 forG1909 myG3450 vestureG2441 they did castG906(Aor2ActInd) lots.G2819 These thingsG5023 thereforeG3767 the soldiersG4757 did.G4160(AorActInd) [25] NowG1161 there stoodG2476(PlupfActInd) byG3844 the crossG4716 of JesusG2424 hisG846 mother,G3384 andG2532 hisG846 mother’sG3384 sister,G79 MaryG3137 the [wife]G3588 of Cleophas,G2832 andG2532 MaryG3137 Magdalene.G3094 [26] When JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 sawG1492(Aor2ActPtc) his mother,G3384 andG2532 the discipleG3101 standing by,G3936(PerfActPtc) whomG3739 he loved,G25(ImpfActInd) he saithG3004(PresActInd) unto hisG846 mother,G3384 Woman,G1135 beholdG2400(Aor2ActImpr) thyG4675 son!G5207 [27] ThenG1534 saith heG3004(PresActInd) to the disciple,G3101 BeholdG2400(Aor2ActImpr) thyG4675 mother!G3384 AndG2532 fromG575 thatG1565 hourG5610 that discipleG3101 tookG2983(Aor2ActInd) herG846 untoG1519 his ownG2398 [28] AfterG3326 this,G5124 JesusG2424 knowingG1492(PerfActPtc) thatG3754 all thingsG3956 wereG5055 nowG2235 accomplished,G5055(PerfPasInd) thatG2443 the scriptureG1124 might be fulfilled,G5048(AorPasSubj) saith,G3004(PresActInd) I thirst.G1372(PresActInd) [29] NowG3767 there was setG2749(ImpfMidPasDepInd) a vesselG4632 fullG3324 of vinegar:G3690 andG1161 they filledG4130(AorActPtc) a spungeG4699 with vinegar,G3690 andG2532 put [it] uponG4060(Aor2ActPtc) hyssop,G5301 and putG4374(AorActInd) [it] to hisG846 mouth.G4750 [30] WhenG3753 JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 had receivedG2983(Aor2ActInd) the vinegar,G3690 he said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) It is finished:G5055(PerfPasInd) andG2532 he bowedG2827(AorActPtc) his head,G2776 and gave upG3860(AorActInd) the ghost.G4151 [31] The JewsG2453 therefore,G3767 becauseG1893 it wasG2258(ImpfInd) the preparation,G3904 thatG3363 the bodiesG4983 shouldG3306 notG3363 remainG3306(AorActSubj) uponG1909 the crossG4716 onG1722 the sabbath day,G4521 (forG1063 thatG1565 sabbath dayG4521 wasG2258(ImpfInd) an highG3173 day,G2250) besoughtG2065(AorActInd) PilateG4091 thatG2443 theirG846 legsG4628 might be broken,G2608(Aor2PasSubj) andG2532 [that] they might be taken away.G142(AorPasSubj) [32] ThenG3767 cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) the soldiers,G4757 andG2532 brakeG2608(AorActInd) the legsG4628 of theG3303 first,G4413 andG2532 of the otherG243 whichG3588 was crucified withG4957(AorPasPtc) him.G846 [33] ButG1161 whenG5613 they cameG2064(Aor2ActPtc) toG1909 Jesus,G2424 and sawG1492(Aor2ActInd) that heG846 was deadG2348(PerfActPtc) already,G2235 they brakeG2608(AorActInd) notG3756 hisG846 legs:G4628 [34] ButG235 oneG1520 of the soldiersG4757 with a spearG3057 piercedG3572(AorActInd) hisG846 side,G4125 andG2532 forthwithG2117 came there outG1831(Aor2ActInd) bloodG129 andG2532 water.G5204 [35] AndG2532 he that sawG3708(PerfActPtc) [it] bare record,G3140(PerfActInd) andG2532 hisG846 recordG3141 isG2076(PresInd) true:G228 and heG2548 knowethG1492(PerfActInd) thatG3754 he saithG3004(PresActInd) true,G227 thatG2443 yeG5210 might believe.G4100(AorActSubj) [36] ForG1063 these thingsG5023 were done,G1096(Aor2MidDepInd) thatG2443 the scriptureG1124 should be fulfilled,G4137(AorPasSubj) A boneG3747 of himG846 shallG4937 notG3756 be broken.G4937(Fut2PasInd) [37] AndG2532 againG3825 anotherG2087 scriptureG1124 saith,G3004(PresActInd) They shall lookG3700(FutMidDepInd) onG1519 him whomG3739 they pierced.G1574(AorActInd) [38] AndG1161 afterG3326 thisG5023 JosephG2501 ofG575 Arimathaea,G707 beingG5607(PresPtc) a discipleG3101 of Jesus,G2424 butG1161 secretlyG2928(PerfPasPtc) forG1223 fearG5401 of the Jews,G2453 besoughtG2065(AorActInd) PilateG4091 thatG2443 he might take awayG142(AorActSubj) the bodyG4983 of Jesus:G2424 andG2532 PilateG4091 gave [him] leave.G2010(AorActInd) He cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) therefore,G3767 andG2532 tookG142(AorActInd) the bodyG4983 of Jesus.G2424 [39] AndG1161 there cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) alsoG2532 Nicodemus,G3530 whichG3588 at the firstG4412 cameG2064(Aor2ActPtc) toG4314 JesusG2424 by night,G3571 and broughtG5342(PresActPtc) a mixtureG3395 of myrrhG4666 andG2532 aloes,G250 aboutG5616 an hundredG1540 poundG3046 [weight]. [40] ThenG3767 took theyG2983(Aor2ActInd) the bodyG4983 of Jesus,G2424 andG2532 woundG1210(AorActInd) itG846 in linen clothesG3608 withG3326 the spices,G759 asG2531 the mannerG1485 of the JewsG2453 isG2076(PresInd) to bury.G1779(PresActInf) [41] NowG1161 inG1722 the placeG5117 whereG3699 he was crucifiedG4717(AorPasInd) there wasG2258(ImpfInd) a garden;G2779 andG2532 inG1722 the gardenG2779 a newG2537 sepulchre,G3419 whereinG1722 wasG5087 neverG3764 manG3762 yetG3764 laid.G5087(AorPasInd) [42] ThereG1563 laid theyG5087(AorActInd) JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 becauseG1223 of the Jews’G2453 preparationG3904 [day]; forG3754 the sepulchreG3419 wasG2258(ImpfInd) nigh at hand.G1451
