[1] Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, [2] “Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy out of their own heart, ‘Hear Yahweh’s word: [3] The Lord Yahweh says, “Woe to the foolish prophets, who follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! [4] Israel, your prophets have been like foxes in the waste places. [5] You have not gone up into the gaps or built up the wall for the house of Israel, to stand in the battle in Yahweh’s day. [6] They have seen falsehood and lying divination, who say, ‘Yahweh says;’ but Yahweh has not sent them. They have made men to hope that the word would be confirmed. [7] Haven’t you seen a false vision, and haven’t you spoken a lying divination, in that you say, ‘Yahweh says;’ but I have not spoken?” [8] “ ‘Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: “Because you have spoken falsehood and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you,” says the Lord Yahweh. [9] “My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who utter lying divinations. They will not be in the council of my people, neither will they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither will they enter into the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh.” [10] “ ‘Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, “Peace;” and there is no peace. When one builds up a wall, behold, they plaster it with whitewash. [11] Tell those who plaster it with whitewash that it will fall. There will be an overflowing shower; and you, great hailstones, will fall. A stormy wind will tear it. [12] Behold, when the wall has fallen, won’t it be said to you, “Where is the plaster with which you have plastered it?” [13] “ ‘Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: “I will even tear it with a stormy wind in my wrath. There will be an overflowing shower in my anger, and great hailstones in wrath to consume it. [14] So I will break down the wall that you have plastered with whitewash, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be uncovered. It will fall, and you will be consumed in the middle of it. Then you will know that I am Yahweh. [15] Thus I will accomplish my wrath on the wall, and on those who have plastered it with whitewash. I will tell you, ‘The wall is no more, nor those who plastered it— [16] to wit, the prophets of Israel who prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace,’ ” says the Lord Yahweh.’ ” [17] You, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy against them, [18] and say, “The Lord Yahweh says: ‘Woe to the women who sew magic bands on all elbows and make veils for the head of persons of every stature to hunt souls! Will you hunt the souls of my people and save souls alive for yourselves? [19] You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to kill the souls who should not die and to save the souls alive who should not live, by your lying to my people who listen to lies.’ [20] “Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I am against your magic bands, with which you hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms. I will let the souls fly free, even the souls whom you ensnare like birds. [21] I will also tear your veils and deliver my people out of your hand; and they will no longer be in your hand to be ensnared. Then you will know that I am Yahweh. [22] Because with lies you have grieved the heart of the righteous, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, and be saved alive. [23] Therefore you shall no more see false visions nor practice divination. I will deliver my people out of your hand. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’ ”

Woe to the False Prophets

[1] And the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came unto me, saying, H559 (QalInf) [2] Son H1121 of man, H120 prophesy H5012 (NiphImpv) against the prophets H5030 of Israel H3478 that prophesy, H5012 (NiphPtc) and say H559 (QalPerf) thou unto them that prophesy H5030 out of their own hearts, H3820 Hear H8085 (QalImpv) ye the word H1697 of the Lord; H3068 [3] Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H136 God; H3069 Woe H1945 unto the foolish H5036 prophets, H5030 that follow H1980 (QalActPtc)§ their own spirit, H7307 and have seen H7200 (QalPerf) nothing!§ [4] O Israel, H3478 thy prophets H5030 are like the foxes H7776 in the deserts. H2723 [5] Ye have not gone up H5927 (QalPerf) into the gaps, H6556§ neither made up H1443 (QalImpf) the hedge H1447§ for the house H1004 of Israel H3478 to stand H5975 (QalInf) in the battle H4421 in the day H3117 of the Lord. [13] Therefore thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H136 God; H3069 I will even rend H1234 (PielPerf) it with a stormy H5591 wind H7307 in my fury; H2534 and there shall be an overflowing H7857 (QalActPtc) shower H1653 in mine anger, H639 and great hailstones H417 in my fury H2534 to consume H3617 it. [14] So will I break down H2040 (QalPerf) the wall H7023 that ye have daubed H2902 (QalPerf) with untempered H8602 morter, and bring H5060 (HiphPerf) it down to the ground, H776 so that the foundation H3247 thereof shall be discovered, H1540 (NiphPerf) and it shall fall, H5307 (QalPerf) and ye shall be consumed H3615 (QalPerf) in the midst H8432 thereof: and ye shall know H3045 (QalPerf) that I am the Lord. H3068 [15] Thus will I accomplish H3615 (PielPerf) my wrath H2534 upon the wall, H7023 and upon them that have daubed H2902 (QalActPtc) it with untempered H8602 morter, and will say H559 (QalImpf) unto you, The wall H7023 is no more, neither they that daubed H2902 (QalActPtc) it; [16] to wit, the prophets H5030 of Israel H3478 which prophesy H5012 (NiphPtc) concerning Jerusalem, H3389 and which see H2374 visions H2377 of peace H7965 for her, and there is no peace, H7965 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord H136 God. H3069 [17] Likewise, thou son H1121 of man, H120 set H7760 (QalImpv) thy face H6440 against the daughters H1323 of thy people, H5971 which prophesy H5012 (HithPtc) out of their own heart; H3820 and prophesy H5012 (NiphImpv) thou against them, [18] and say, H559 (QalPerf) Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H136 God; H3069 Woe H1945 to the women that sew H8609 (PielPtc) pillows H3704 to all armholes, H679§ and make H6213 (QalActPtc) kerchiefs H4555 upon the head H7218 of every stature H6967 to hunt H6679 (PoelInf) souls! H5315 Will ye hunt H6679 (PoelImpf) the souls H5315 of my people, H5971 and will ye save H2421 the souls H5315 alive H2421 (PielImpf) that come unto you? H3577 [20] Wherefore thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H136 God; H3069 Behold, I am against your pillows, H3704 wherewith ye H859 there hunt H6679 (PoelPtc) the souls H5315 to make them fly,§ H6524 (QalActPtc) and I will tear H7167 (QalPerf) them from your arms, H2220 and will let the souls H5315 go, H7971 (PielPerf) even the souls H5315 that ye hunt H6679 (PoelPtc) to make them fly. H6524 (QalActPtc) [21] Your kerchiefs H4555 also will I tear, H7167 (QalPerf) and deliver H5337 (HiphPerf) my people H5971 out of your hand, H3027 and they shall be no more in your hand H3027 to be hunted; H4686 and ye shall know H3045 (QalPerf) that I am the Lord.
