[1] Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, [2] “Son of man, tell a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel; [3] and say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers which had various colors, came to Lebanon and took the top of the cedar. [4] He cropped off the topmost of its young twigs, and carried it to a land of traffic. He planted it in a city of merchants. [5] “ ‘ “He also took some of the seed of the land and planted it in fruitful soil. He placed it beside many waters. He set it as a willow tree. [6] It grew and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and its roots were under him. So it became a vine, produced branches, and shot out sprigs. [7] “ ‘ “There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers. Behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, and shot out its branches toward him, from the ground where it was planted, that he might water it. [8] It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might produce branches and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a good vine.” ’ [9] “Say, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “Will it prosper? Won’t he pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, that it may wither, that all its fresh springing leaves may wither? It can’t be raised from its roots by a strong arm or many people. [10] Yes, behold, being planted, will it prosper? Won’t it utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the ground where it grew.” ’ ” [11] Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, [12] “Say now to the rebellious house, ‘Don’t you know what these things mean?’ Tell them, ‘Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took its king, and its princes, and brought them to him to Babylon. [13] He took one of the royal offspring,§ and made a covenant with him. He also brought him under an oath, and took away the mighty of the land, [14] that the kingdom might be brought low, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand. [15] But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Will he prosper? Will he who does such things escape? Will he break the covenant, and still escape? [16] “ ‘As I live,’ says the Lord Yahweh, ‘surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he broke, even with him in the middle of Babylon he will die. [17] Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company won’t help him in the war, when they cast up mounds and build forts to cut off many persons. [18] For he has despised the oath by breaking the covenant; and behold, he had given his hand, and yet has done all these things. He won’t escape. [19] “Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: ‘As I live, I will surely bring on his own head my oath that he has despised and my covenant that he has broken. [20] I will spread my net on him, and he will be taken in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, and will enter into judgment with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against me. [21] All his fugitives in all his bands will fall by the sword, and those who remain will be scattered toward every wind. Then you will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken it.’ [22] “The Lord Yahweh says: ‘I will also take some of the lofty top of the cedar, and will plant it. I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. [23] I will plant it in the mountain of the height of Israel; and it will produce boughs, and bear fruit, and be a good cedar. Birds of every kind will dwell in the shade of its branches. [24] All the trees of the field will know that I, Yahweh, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree flourish.“ ‘I, Yahweh, have spoken and have done it.’ ”

[1] And the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 came unto me, saying,H559(QalInf) [2] SonH1121 of man,H120 put forthH2330(QalImpv) a riddle,H2420 and speakH4911(QalImpv) a parableH4912 unto the houseH1004 of Israel;H3478 [3] And say,H559(QalPerf) Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH136 God;H3069 A greatH1419 eagleH5404 with greatH1419 wings,H3671 longwinged,H83 fullH4392 of feathers,H5133 which had divers colours,H7553 cameH935(QalPerf) unto Lebanon,H3844 and tookH3947(QalImpf) the highest branchH6788 of the cedar:H730 [4] He cropped offH6998(QalPerf) the topH7218 of his young twigs,H3242 and carriedH935(HiphImpf) it into a landH776 of traffick;H3667 he setH7760(QalPerf) it in a cityH5892 of merchants.H7402(QalActPtc) [5] He tookH3947(QalImpf) also of the seedH2233 of the land,H776 and plantedH5414(QalImpf) it in a fruitfulH2233 field;H7704 he placedH3947(QalPerf) [it] by greatH7227 waters,H4325 [and] setH7760(QalPerf) it [as] a willow tree.H6851 [6] And it grew,H6779(QalImpf) and became a spreadingH5628(QalActPtc) vineH1612 of lowH8217 stature,H6967 whose branchesH1808 turnedH6437(QalInf) toward him, and the rootsH8328 thereof were under him: so it became a vine,H1612 and brought forthH6213(QalImpf) branches,H905 and shotH7971(PielImpf) forth sprigs.H6288 [7] There was also anotherH259 greatH1419 eagleH5404 with greatH1419 wingsH3671 and manyH7227 feathers:H5133 and, behold, this vineH1612 did bendH3719(QalPerf) her rootsH8328 toward him, and shot forthH7971(PielPerf) her branchesH1808 toward him, that he might waterH8248(HiphInf) it by the furrowsH6170 of her plantation.H4302 [8] It was plantedH8362(QalPasPtc) in a goodH2896 soilH7704 by greatH7227 waters,H4325 that it might bring forthH6213(QalInf) branches,H6057 and that it might bearH5375(QalInf) fruit,H6529 that it might be a goodlyH155 vine.H1612 [9] SayH559(QalImpv) thou, Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH136 God;H3069 Shall it prosper?H6743(QalImpf) shall he not pull upH5423(PielImpf) the rootsH8328 thereof, and cut offH7082(PoelImpf) the fruitH6529 thereof, that it wither?H3001(QalPerf) it shall witherH3001(QalImpf) in all the leavesH2964 of her spring,H6780 even without greatH1419 powerH2220 or manyH7227 peopleH5971 to pluck it upH5375(QalInf) by the rootsH8328 thereof. [10] Yea, behold, [being] planted,H8362(QalPasPtc) shall it prosper?H6743(QalImpf) shall it not utterlyH3001(QalInf) wither,H3001(QalImpf) when the eastH6921 windH7307 touchethH5060(QalInf) it? it shall witherH3001(QalImpf) in the furrowsH6170 where it grew.H6780 [11] Moreover the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 came unto me, saying,H559(QalInf) [12] SayH559(QalImpv) now to the rebelliousH4805 house,H1004 KnowH3045(QalPerf) ye not what these [things mean]? tellH559(QalImpv) [them], Behold, the kingH4428 of BabylonH894 is comeH935(QalActPtc) to Jerusalem,H3389 and hath takenH3947(QalImpf) the kingH4428 thereof, and the princesH8269 thereof, and ledH935(HiphImpf) them with him to Babylon;H894 [13] And hath takenH3947(QalImpf) of the king’sH4410 seed,H2233 and madeH3772(QalImpf) a covenantH1285 with him, and hath takenH935(HiphImpf) an oathH423 of him: he hath also takenH3947(QalPerf) the mightyH352 of the land:H776 [14] That the kingdomH4467 might be base,H8217 that it might not lift itself up,H5375(HithInf) [but] that by keepingH8104(QalInf) of his covenantH1285 it might stand.H5975(QalInf) [15] But he rebelledH4775(QalImpf) against him in sendingH7971(QalInf) his ambassadorsH4397 into Egypt,H4714 that they might giveH5414(QalInf) him horsesH5483 and muchH7227 people.H5971 Shall he prosper?H6743(QalImpf) shall he escapeH4422(NiphImpf) that doethH6213(QalActPtc) such [things]? or shall he breakH6565(HiphPerf) the covenant,H1285 and be delivered?H4422(NiphPerf) [16] [As] I live,H2416 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the LordH136 God,H3069 surely in the placeH4725 [where] the kingH4428 [dwelleth] that made him king,H4427(HiphPtc) whose oathH423 he despised,H959(QalPerf) and whose covenantH1285 he brake,H6565(HiphPerf) [even] with him in the midstH8432 of BabylonH894 he shall die.H4191(QalImpf) [17] Neither shall PharaohH6547 with [his] mightyH1419 armyH2428 and greatH7227 companyH6951 makeH6213(QalImpf) for him in the war,H4421 by casting upH8210(QalInf) mounts,H5550 and buildingH1129(QalInf) forts,H1785 to cut offH3772(HiphInf) manyH7227 persons:H5315 [18] Seeing he despisedH959(QalPerf) the oathH423 by breakingH6565(HiphInf) the covenant,H1285 when, lo, he had givenH5414(QalPerf) his hand,H3027 and hath doneH6213(QalPerf) all these [things], he shall not escape.H4422(NiphImpf) [19] Therefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH136 God;H3069 [As] I live,H2416 surely mine oathH423 that he hath despised,H959(QalPerf) and my covenantH1285 that he hath broken,H6331(HiphPerf) even it will I recompenseH5414(QalPerf) upon his own head.H7218 [20] And I will spreadH6566(QalPerf) my netH7568 upon him, and he shall be takenH8610(NiphPerf) in my snare,H4686 and I will bringH935(HiphPerf) him to Babylon,H894 and will pleadH8199(NiphPerf) with him there for his trespassH4603(QalPerf) that he hath trespassedH4604 against me. [21] And all his fugitivesH4015 with all his bandsH102 shall fallH5307(QalImpf) by the sword,H2719 and they that remainH7604(NiphPtc) shall be scatteredH6566(NiphImpf) toward all winds:H7307 and ye shall knowH3045(QalPerf) that I the LordH3068 have spokenH1696(PielPerf) [it]. [22] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH136 God;H3069 I will also takeH3947(QalPerf) of the highest branchH6788 of the highH7311(QalActPtc) cedar,H730 and will setH5414(QalPerf) [it]; I will crop offH6998(QalImpf) from the topH7218 of his young twigsH3127 a tender one,H7390 and will plantH8362(QalPerf) [it] upon an highH1364 mountainH2022 and eminent:H8524(QalPasPtc) [23] In the mountainH2022 of the heightH4791 of IsraelH3478 will I plantH8362(QalImpf) it: and it shall bring forthH5375(QalPerf) boughs,H6057 and bearH6213(QalPerf) fruit,H6529 and be a goodlyH117 cedar:H730 and under it shall dwellH7931(QalPerf) all fowlH6833 of every wing;H3671 in the shadowH6738 of the branchesH1808 thereof shall they dwell.H7931(QalImpf) [24] And all the treesH6086 of the fieldH7704 shall knowH3045(QalPerf) that I the LordH3068 have brought downH8213(HiphPerf) the highH1364 tree,H6086 have exaltedH1361(HiphPerf) the lowH8217 tree,H6086 have driedH3001(HiphPerf) up the greenH3892 tree,H6086 and have made the dryH3002 treeH6086 to flourish:H6524(HiphPerf) I the LordH3068 have spokenH1696(PielPerf) and have doneH6213(QalPerf) [it].
