[1] Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. [2] They bound him, led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor. [3] Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that Jesus was condemned, felt remorse, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, [4] saying, “I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood.”But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.” [5] He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary and departed. Then he went away and hanged himself. [6] The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It’s not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.” [7] They took counsel, and bought the potter’s field with them to bury strangers in. [8] Therefore that field has been called “The Field of Blood” to this day. [9] Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah‡ the prophet was fulfilled, saying,
“They took the thirty pieces of silver,
the price of him upon whom a price had been set,
whom some of the children of Israel priced,
[10] and they gave them for the potter’s field,
as the Lord commanded me.”† [11] Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?”Jesus said to him, “So you say.” [12] When he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. [13] Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how many things they testify against you?” [14] He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly. [15] Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner whom they desired. [16] They had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas. [17] When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” [18] For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up. [19] While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.” [20] Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. [21] But the governor answered them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?”They said, “Barabbas!” [22] Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do to Jesus who is called Christ?”They all said to him, “Let him be crucified!” [23] But the governor said, “Why? What evil has he done?”But they cried out exceedingly, saying, “Let him be crucified!” [24] So when Pilate saw that nothing was being gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person. You see to it.” [25] All the people answered, “May his blood be on us and on our children!” [26] Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified. [27] Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole garrison together against him. [28] They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. [29] They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” [30] They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. [31] When they had mocked him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him. [32] As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross. [33] When they came to a place called “Golgotha”, that is to say, “The place of a skull,” [34] they gave him sour wine§ to drink mixed with gall.ⓘ When he had tasted it, he would not drink. [35] When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots,‡ [36] and they sat and watched him there. [37] They set up over his head the accusation against him written, “THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” [38] Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left. [39] Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads [40] and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” [41] Likewise the chief priests also mocking with the scribes, the Pharisees,‡ and the elders, said, [42] “He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. [43] He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” [44] The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach. [45] Now from the sixth hourⓘ there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.ⓘ [46] About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lima‡ sabachthani?” That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”† [47] Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” [48] Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink. [49] The rest said, “Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.” [50] Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit. [51] Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split. [52] The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; [53] and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many. [54] Now the centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were done, were terrified, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!” [55] Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him. [56] Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. [57] When evening had come, a rich man from Arimathaea named Joseph, who himself was also Jesus’ disciple, came. [58] This man went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up. [59] Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth [60] and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock. Then he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. [61] Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. [62] Now on the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate, [63] saying, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise again.’ [64] Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” [65] Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.” [66] So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.
“They took the thirty pieces of silver,

[5] AndG2532 he cast downG4496(AorActPtc) the pieces of silverG694 inG1722 the temple,G3485 and departed,G402(AorActInd) andG2532 wentG565(Aor2ActPtc) and hanged himself.G519(AorMidInd) [6] AndG1161 the chief priestsG749 tookG2983(Aor2ActPtc) the silver pieces,G694 and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) It isG1832 notG3756 lawfulG1832(PresInd) for to putG906(Aor2ActInf) themG846 intoG1519 the treasury,G2878 becauseG1893 it isG2076(PresInd) the priceG5092 of blood.G129 [7] AndG1161 they tookG2983(Aor2ActPtc) counsel,G4824 and boughtG59(AorActInd) withG1537 themG846 the potter’sG2763 field,G68 toG1519 buryG5027 strangersG3581 in.G5027 [8] WhereforeG1352 thatG1565 fieldG68 was called,G2564(AorPasInd) The fieldG68 of blood,G129 untoG2193 this day.G4594 [9] ThenG5119 was fulfilledG4137(AorPasInd) that whichG3588 was spokenG4483(AorPasPtc) byG1223 JeremyG2408 the prophet,G4396 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) AndG2532 they tookG2983(Aor2ActInd) the thirtyG5144 pieces of silver,G694 the priceG5092 of him that was valued,G5091(PerfPasPtc) whomG3739 they ofG575 the childrenG5207 of IsraelG2474 did value;G5091(AorMidInd) [10] AndG2532 gaveG1325(AorActInd) themG846 forG1519 the potter’sG2763 field,G68 asG2505 the LordG2962 appointedG4929(AorActInd) me.G3427 [11] AndG1161 JesusG2424 stoodG2476(Aor2ActInd) beforeG1715 the governor:G2232 andG2532 the governorG2232 askedG1905(AorActInd) him,G846 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) ArtG1488(PresInd) thouG4771 the KingG935 of the Jews?G2453 AndG1161 JesusG2424 saidG5346(ImpfInd) unto him,G846 ThouG4771 sayest.G3004(PresActInd) [12] AndG2532 whenG1722 heG846 was accusedG2723(PresPasInf) ofG5259 the chief priestsG749 andG2532 elders,G4245 he answeredG611(AorMidDepInd) nothing.G3762 [13] ThenG5119 saidG3004(PresActInd) PilateG4091 unto him,G846 Hearest thouG191(PresActInd) notG3756 how many thingsG4214 they witness againstG2649(PresActInd) thee?G4675 [14] AndG2532 he answeredG3756 himG846 toG4314 neverG3761 aG1520 word;G4487 insomuchG5620 that the governorG2232 marvelledG2296(PresActInf) greatly.G3029 [15] NowG1161 atG2596 [that] feastG1859 the governorG2232 was wontG1486(PlupfActInd) to releaseG630(PresActInf) unto the peopleG3793 aG1520 prisoner,G1198 whomG3739 they would.G2309(ImpfActInd) [16] AndG1161 they hadG2192(ImpfActInd) thenG5119 a notableG1978 prisoner,G1198 calledG3004(PresPasPtc) Barabbas.G912 [17] ThereforeG3767 when theyG846 were gathered together,G4863(PerfPasPtc) PilateG4091 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto them,G846 WhomG5101 will yeG2309(PresActInd) that I releaseG630(AorActSubj) unto you?G5213 Barabbas,G912 orG2228 JesusG2424 whichG3588 is calledG3004(PresPasPtc) Christ?G5547 [18] ForG1063 he knewG1492(PlupfActInd) thatG3754 forG1223 envyG5355 they had deliveredG3860(AorActInd) him.G846 [19] WhenG1161 heG846 was set downG2521(PresMidPasDepPtc) onG1909 the judgment seat,G968 hisG846 wifeG1135 sentG649(AorActInd) untoG4314 him,G846 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Have thouG4671 nothingG3367 to do with thatG1565 just man:G1342 forG1063 I have sufferedG3958(Aor2ActInd) many thingsG4183 this dayG4594 inG2596 a dreamG3677 becauseG1223 of him.G846 [20] ButG1161 the chief priestsG749 andG2532 eldersG4245 persuadedG3982(AorActInd) the multitudeG3793 thatG2443 they should askG154(AorMidSubj) Barabbas,G912 andG1161 destroyG622(AorActSubj) Jesus.G2424 [21] The governorG2232 answeredG611(AorPasDepPtc) andG1161 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto them,G846 WhetherG5101 ofG575 the twainG1417 will yeG2309(PresActInd) that I releaseG630(AorActSubj) unto you?G5213 They said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Barabbas.G912 [22] PilateG4091 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto them,G846 WhatG5101 shall I doG4160(FutActInd) thenG3767 with JesusG2424 whichG3588 is calledG3004(PresPasPtc) Christ?G5547 [They] allG3956 sayG3004(PresActInd) unto him,G846 Let him be crucified.G4717(AorPasImpr) [23] AndG1161 the governorG2232 said,G5346(ImpfInd) Why,G1063 whatG5101 evilG2556 hath he done?G4160(AorActInd) ButG1161 they cried outG2896(ImpfActInd) the more,G4057 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Let him be crucified.G4717(AorPasImpr) [24] WhenG1161 PilateG4091 sawG1492(Aor2ActPtc) thatG3754 he could prevailG5623(PresActInd) nothing,G3762 butG235 [that] ratherG3123 a tumultG2351 was made,G1096(PresMidPasDepInd) he tookG2983(Aor2ActPtc) water,G5204 and washedG633(AorMidInd) [his] handsG5495 beforeG561 the multitude,G3793 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) I amG1510(PresInd) innocentG121 ofG575 the bloodG129 of thisG5127 just person:G1342 seeG3700(FutMidDepInd) yeG5210 [to it]. [25] ThenG2532 answeredG611(AorPasDepPtc) allG3956 the people,G2992 and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) HisG846 bloodG129 [be] onG1909 us,G2248 andG2532 onG1909 ourG2257 children.G5043 [26] ThenG5119 released heG630(AorActInd) BarabbasG912 unto them:G846 andG1161 when he had scourgedG5417(AorActPtc) Jesus,G2424 he deliveredG3860(AorActInd) [him] toG2443 be crucified.G4717(AorPasSubj) [27] ThenG5119 the soldiersG4757 of the governorG2232 tookG3880(Aor2ActPtc) JesusG2424 intoG1519 the common hall,G4232 and gatheredG4863(Aor2ActInd) untoG1909 himG846 the wholeG3650 bandG4686 [of soldiers]. [28] AndG2532 they strippedG1562(AorActPtc) him,G846 and put onG4060(AorActInd) himG846 a scarletG2847 robe.G5511 [29] AndG2532 when they had plattedG4120(AorActPtc) a crownG4735 ofG1537 thorns,G173 they putG2007(AorActInd) [it] uponG1909 hisG846 head,G2776 andG2532 a reedG2563 inG1909 hisG846 right hand:G1188 andG2532 they bowed the kneeG1120(AorActPtc) beforeG1715 him,G846 and mockedG1702(ImpfActInd) him,G846 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Hail,G5463(PresActImpr) KingG935 of the Jews!G2453 [30] AndG2532 they spitG1716(AorActPtc) uponG1519 him,G846 and tookG2983(Aor2ActInd) the reed,G2563 andG2532 smoteG5180(ImpfActInd) himG846 onG1519 the head.G2776 [31] AndG2532 afterG3753 that they had mockedG1702(AorActInd) him,G846 they tookG1562 the robeG5511 offG1562(AorActInd) from him,G846 andG2532 putG1746 his ownG846 raimentG2440 onG1746(AorActInd) him,G846 andG2532 ledG520 himG846 awayG520(Aor2ActInd) toG1519 crucifyG4717(AorActInf) [him]. [32] AndG1161 as they came out,G1831(PresMidPasDepPtc) they foundG2147(Aor2ActInd) a manG444 of Cyrene,G2956 SimonG4613 by name:G3686 himG5126 they compelledG29(AorActInd) toG2443 bearG142(AorActSubj) hisG846 cross.G4716 [33] AndG2532 when they were comeG2064(Aor2ActPtc) untoG1519 a placeG5117 calledG3004(PresPasPtc) Golgotha,G1115 thatG3739 isG2076(PresInd) to say,G3004(PresPasPtc) a placeG5117 of a skull,G2898 [34] They gaveG1325(AorActInd) himG846 vinegarG3690 to drinkG4095(Aor2ActInf) mingledG3396(PerfPasPtc) withG3326 gall:G5521 andG2532 when he had tastedG1089(AorMidDepPtc) [thereof], he thatG2443 it might be fulfilledG4137(AorPasSubj) whichG3588 was spokenG4483(AorPasPtc) byG5259 the prophet,G4396 They partedG1266(AorMidInd) myG3450 garmentsG2440 among them,G1438 andG2532 uponG1909 myG3450 vestureG2441 did they castG906(Aor2ActInd) lots.G2819 [36] AndG2532 sitting downG2521(PresMidPasDepPtc) they watchedG5083(ImpfActInd) himG846 there;G1563 [37] AndG2532 set upG2007(AorActInd) crucifiedG4717(PresPasInd) withG4862 him,G846 oneG1520 onG1537 the right hand,G1188 andG2532 anotherG1520 onG1537 the left.G2176 [39] AndG1161 they that passed byG3899(PresMidPasDepPtc) reviledG987(ImpfActInd) him,G846 waggingG2795(PresActPtc) theirG846 heads,G2776 [40] AndG2532 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Thou that destroyestG2647(PresActPtc) the temple,G3485 andG2532 others;G243 himselfG1438 he cannotG3756 save.G4982(AorActInf) IfG1487 he beG2076(PresInd) the KingG935 of Israel,G2474 let himG2597 nowG3568 come downG2597(Aor2ActImpr) fromG575 the cross,G4716 andG2532 we will believeG4100(FutActInd) him.G846 [43] He trustedG3982(Perf2ActInd) inG1909 God;G2316 let him deliverG4506(AorMidDepImpr) himG846 now,G3568 ifG1487 he will haveG2309(PresActInd) him:G846 forG1063 he said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) I amG1510(PresInd) the SonG5207 of God.G2316 [44] The thievesG3027 also,G2532 whichG3588 were crucifiedG4957(AorPasPtc) with him,G846 castG3679 the sameG846 in hisG846 teeth.G3679(ImpfActInd) [45] NowG1161 fromG575 the sixthG1623 hourG5610 there wasG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) darknessG4655 overG1909 allG3956 the landG1093 untoG2193 the ninthG1766 hour.G5610 [46] AndG1161 aboutG4012 the ninthG1766 hourG5610 JesusG2424 criedG310(AorActInd) with a loudG3173 voice,G5456 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Eli,G2241 Eli,G2241 lamaG2982 sabachthani?G4518 thatG5123(PresInd) is to say, MyG3450 God,G2316 myG3450 God,G2316 whyG2444 hast thou forsakenG1459(Aor2ActInd) me?G3165 [47] Some of themG5100 that stoodG2476(PerfActPtc) there,G1563 when they heardG191(AorActPtc) [that], said,G3004(ImpfActInd) ThisG3778 [man] calleth forG5455(PresActInd) Elias.G2243 [48] AndG2532 straightwayG2112 oneG1520 ofG1537 themG846 ran,G5143(Aor2ActPtc) andG2532 tookG2983(Aor2ActPtc) a spunge,G4699 andG5037 filledG4130(AorActPtc) [it] with vinegar,G3690 andG2532 put [it] onG4060(Aor2ActPtc) a reed,G2563 and gaveG4222 himG846 to drink.G4222(ImpfActInd) [49] TheG1161 restG3062 said,G3004(ImpfActInd) Let be,G863(Aor2ActImpr) let us seeG1492(Aor2ActSubj) whetherG1487 EliasG2243 will comeG2064(PresMidPasDepInd) to saveG4982(FutActPtc) him.G846 [50] Jesus,G2424 when he had criedG2896(AorActPtc) againG3825 with a loudG3173 voice,G5456 yielded upG863(AorActInd) the ghost.G4151 [51] And,G2532 behold,G2400(Aor2ActImpr) the veilG2665 of the templeG3485 was rentG4977(AorPasInd) inG1519 twainG1417 fromG575 the topG509 toG2193 the bottom;G2736 andG2532 the earthG1093 did quake,G4579(AorPasInd) andG2532 the rocksG4073 rent;G4977(AorPasInd) [52] AndG2532 the gravesG3419 were opened;G455(AorPasInd) andG2532 manyG4183 bodiesG4983 of the saintsG40 whichG3588 sleptG2837(PerfPasPtc) arose,G1453(AorPasInd) [53] AndG2532 cameG1831(Aor2ActPtc) out ofG1537 the gravesG3419 afterG3326 hisG846 resurrection,G1454 and wentG1525(Aor2ActInd) intoG1519 the holyG40 city,G4172 andG2532 appearedG1718(AorPasInd) unto many.G4183 [54] NowG1161 when the centurion,G1543 andG2532 they that were withG3326 him,G846 watchingG5083(PresActPtc) Jesus,G2424 sawG1492(Aor2ActPtc) the earthquake,G4578 andG2532 those things that were done,G1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) they fearedG5399(AorPasDepInd) greatly,G4970 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) TrulyG230 thisG3778 wasG2258(ImpfInd) the SonG5207 of God.G2316 [55] AndG1161 manyG4183 womenG1135 wereG2258(ImpfInd) thereG1563 beholdingG2334(PresActPtc) afar off,G575 whichG3748 followedG190(AorActInd) JesusG2424 fromG575 Galilee,G1056 ministeringG1247(PresActPtc) unto him:G846 [56] AmongG1722 whichG3739 wasG2258(ImpfInd) MaryG3137 Magdalene,G3094 andG2532 MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of JamesG2385 andG2532 Joses,G2500 andG2532 the motherG3384 of Zebedee’sG2199 children.G5207 [57] WhenG1161 the evenG3798 was come,G1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) there cameG2064(Aor2ActInd) a richG4145 manG444 ofG575 Arimathaea,G707 namedG5122 Joseph,G2501 whoG3739 alsoG2532 himselfG846 wasG3100 Jesus’G2424 disciple:G3100(AorActInd) [58] HeG3778 wentG4334(Aor2ActPtc) to Pilate,G4091 and beggedG154(AorMidInd) the bodyG4983 of Jesus.G2424 ThenG5119 PilateG4091 commandedG2753(AorActInd) the bodyG4983 to be delivered.G591(AorPasInf) [59] AndG2532 when JosephG2501 had takenG2983(Aor2ActPtc) the body,G4983 he wrappedG1794(AorActInd) itG846 in a cleanG2513 linen cloth,G4616 [60] AndG2532 laidG5087(AorActInd) itG846 inG1722 his ownG846 newG2537 tomb,G3419 whichG3739 he had hewn outG2998(AorActInd) inG1722 the rock:G4073 andG2532 he rolledG4351(AorActPtc) a greatG3173 stoneG3037 to the doorG2374 of the sepulchre,G3419 and departed.G565(Aor2ActInd) [61] AndG1161 thereG1563 wasG2258(ImpfInd) MaryG3137 Magdalene,G3094 andG2532 the otherG243 Mary,G3137 sittingG2521(PresMidPasDepPtc) over againstG561 the sepulchre.G5028 [62] NowG1161 the next day,G1887 thatG3748 followedG2076(PresInd) the day of the preparation,G3904 the chief priestsG749 andG2532 PhariseesG5330 came togetherG4863(AorPasInd) untoG4314 Pilate,G4091 [63] Saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Sir,G2962 we rememberG3415(AorPasInd) thatG3754 thatG1565 deceiverG4108 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) while he was yetG2089 alive,G2198(PresActPtc) AfterG3326 threeG5140 daysG2250 I will rise again.G1453(PresPasInd) [64] CommandG2753(AorActImpr) thereforeG3767 that the sepulchreG5028 be made sureG805(AorPasInf) untilG2193 the thirdG5154 day,G2250 lestG3379 hisG846 disciplesG3101 comeG2064(Aor2ActPtc) by night,G3571 and stealG2813 himG846 away,G2813(AorActSubj) andG2532 sayG2036(Aor2ActSubj) unto the people,G2992 He is risenG1453(AorPasInd) fromG575 the dead:G3498 soG2532 the lastG2078 errorG4106 shall beG2071(FutInd) worse thanG5501 the first.G4413 [65] PilateG4091 saidG5346(ImpfInd) unto them,G846 Ye haveG2192(PresActInd) a watch:G2892 go your way,G5217(PresActImpr) make [it] as sureG805(AorMidDepImpr) asG5613 ye can.G1492(PerfActInd) [66] SoG1161 they went,G4198(AorPasDepPtc) and madeG805 the sepulchreG5028 sure,G805(AorMidDepInd) sealingG4972(AorActPtc) the stone,G3037 and settingG3326 a watch.G2892
