[1] Oh that you would tear the heavens,
that you would come down,
that the mountains might quake at your presence—
[2] as when fire kindles the brushwood,
and the fire causes the water to boil.
Make your name known to your adversaries,
that the nations may tremble at your presence!
[3] When you did awesome things which we didn’t look for,
you came down, and the mountains quaked at your presence.
[4] For from of old men have not heard,
nor perceived by the ear,
nor has the eye seen a God besides you,
who works for him who waits for him.
[5] You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness,
those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned.
We have been in sin for a long time.
Shall we be saved?
[6] For we have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteousness is like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf;
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
[7] There is no one who calls on your name,
who stirs himself up to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have consumed us by means of our iniquities.
[8] But now, Yahweh, you are our Father.
We are the clay and you our potter.
We all are the work of your hand.
[9] Don’t be furious, Yahweh.
Don’t remember iniquity forever.
Look and see, we beg you,
we are all your people.
[10] Your holy cities have become a wilderness.
Zion has become a wilderness,
Jerusalem a desolation.
[11] Our holy and our beautiful house where our fathers praised you
is burned with fire.
All our pleasant places are laid waste.
[12] Will you hold yourself back for these things, Yahweh?
Will you keep silent and punish us very severely?
King James Version
[1] Oh H3863 that thou wouldest rend H7167 (QalPerf) the heavens, H8064 that thou wouldest come down, H3381 (QalPerf) that the mountains H2022 might flow down H2151 (NiphPerf) at thy presence, H6440 [2] as when the melting H2003 fire H784§ burneth, H6919 (QalInf) the fire H784 causeth the waters H4325 to boil, H1158 (QalImpf) to make thy name H8034 known H3045 (HiphInf) to thine adversaries, H6862 that the nations H1471 may tremble H7264 (QalImpf) at thy presence! H6440 [3] When thou didst H6213 (QalInf) terrible things H3372 (NiphPtc) which we looked H6960 (PielImpf) not for, thou camest down, H3381 (QalPerf) the mountains H2022 flowed down H2151 (NiphPerf) at thy presence. H6440 [4] For since the beginning of the world H5769 men have not heard, H8085 (QalPerf) nor perceived by the ear, H238 (HiphPerf) neither hath the eye H5869 seen, H7200 (QalPerf) O God, H430 beside H2108 thee, what he hath prepared H6213 (QalImpf) for him that waiteth H2442 (PielPtc) for him. [5] Thou meetest H6293 (QalPerf) him that rejoiceth H7797 (QalPtc) and worketh H6213 (QalActPtc) righteousness, H6664 those that remember H2142 (QalImpf) thee in thy ways: H1870 behold, thou art wroth; H7107 (QalPerf) for we have sinned: H2398 (QalImpf) in those is continuance, H5769 and we shall be saved. H3467 (NiphImpf) [6] But we are all as an unclean H2931 thing, and all our righteousnesses H6666 are as filthy H5708 rags; H899 and we all do fade H5034 (QalImpf/Ketiv) as a leaf; H5929 and our iniquities, H5771 like the wind, H7307 have taken us away. H5375 (QalImpf) [7] And there is none that calleth H7121 (QalActPtc) upon thy name, H8034 that stirreth up H5782 (HiplPtc) himself to take hold H2388 (HiphInf) of thee: for thou hast hid H5641 (HiphPerf) thy face H6440 from us, and hast consumed H4127 (QalImpf)§ us, because H3027 of our iniquities. H5771 [8] But now, O Lord, H3068 thou art our father; H1 we are the clay, H2563 and thou our potter; H3335 (QalActPtc) and we all are the work H4639 of thy hand. H3027 [9] Be not wroth H7107 (QalImpf) very sore, H3966 O Lord, H3068 neither remember H2142 (QalImpf) iniquity H5771 for ever: H5703 behold, see, H5027 (HiphImpv) we beseech thee, we are all thy people. H5971 [10] Thy holy H6944 cities H5892 are a wilderness, H4057 Zion H6726 is a wilderness, H4057 Jerusalem H3389 a desolation. H8077 [11] Our holy H6944 and our beautiful H8597 house, H1004 where our fathers H1 praised H1984 (PielPerf) thee, is burned up H8316 with fire: H784 and all our pleasant things H4261 are laid waste. H2723 [12] Wilt thou refrain H662 (HithImpf) thyself for these things, O Lord? H3068 wilt thou hold thy peace, H2814 (QalImpf) and afflict H6031 (PielImpf) us very sore? H3966
