[1] “Come down and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon.
Sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans.
For you will no longer be called tender and delicate.
[2] Take the millstones and grind flour.
Remove your veil, lift up your skirt, uncover your legs,
and wade through the rivers.
[3] Your nakedness will be uncovered.
Yes, your shame will be seen.
I will take vengeance,
and will spare no one.” [4] Our Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies is his name,
is the Holy One of Israel. [5] “Sit in silence, and go into darkness,
daughter of the Chaldeans.
For you shall no longer be called
the mistress of kingdoms.
[6] I was angry with my people.
I profaned my inheritance
and gave them into your hand.
You showed them no mercy.
You laid a very heavy yoke on the aged.
[7] You said, ‘I will be a princess forever,’
so that you didn’t lay these things to your heart,
nor did you remember the results. [8] “Now therefore hear this, you who are given to pleasures,
who sit securely,
who say in your heart,
‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.
I won’t sit as a widow,
neither will I know the loss of children.’
[9] But these two things will come to you in a moment in one day:
the loss of children and widowhood.
They will come on you in their full measure,
in the multitude of your sorceries,
and the great abundance of your enchantments.
[10] For you have trusted in your wickedness.
You have said, ‘No one sees me.’
Your wisdom and your knowledge has perverted you.
You have said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me.’
[11] Therefore disaster will come on you.
You won’t know when it dawns.
Mischief will fall on you.
You won’t be able to put it away.
Desolation will come on you suddenly,
which you don’t understand. [12] “Stand now with your enchantments
and with the multitude of your sorceries,
in which you have labored from your youth,
as if you might profit,
as if you might prevail.
[13] You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels.
Now let the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from the things that will happen to you.
[14] Behold, they are like stubble.
The fire will burn them.
They won’t deliver themselves from the power of the flame.
It won’t be a coal to warm at
or a fire to sit by.
[15] The things that you labored in will be like this:
those who have trafficked with you from your youth will each wander in his own way.
There will be no one to save you.
Sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans.
For you will no longer be called tender and delicate.

[1] Come down,H3381(QalImpv) and sitH3427(QalImpv) in the dust,H6083 O virginH1330 daughterH1323 of Babylon,H894 sitH3427(QalImpv) on the ground:H776 [there is] no throne,H3678 O daughterH1323 of the Chaldeans:H3778 for thou shalt no moreH3254(HiphImpf) be calledH7121(QalImpf) tenderH7390 and delicate.H6028 [2] TakeH3947(QalImpv) the millstones,H7347 and grindH2912(QalImpv) meal:H7058 uncoverH1540(PielImpv) thy locks,H6777 make bareH2834(QalImpv) the leg,H7640 uncoverH1540(PielImpv) the thigh,H7785 pass overH5674(QalImpv) the rivers.H5104 [3] Thy nakednessH6172 shall be uncovered,H1540(NiphImpf) yea, thy shameH2781 shall be seen:H7200(NiphImpf) I will takeH3947(QalImpf) vengeance,H5359 and I will not meetH6293(QalImpf) [thee as] a man.H120 [4] [As for] our redeemer,H1350(QalActPtc) the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 [is] his name,H8034 the Holy OneH6918 of Israel.H3478 [5] SitH3427(QalImpv) thou silent,H1748 and getH935(QalImpv) thee into darkness,H2822 O daughterH1323 of the Chaldeans:H3778 for thou shalt no moreH3254(HiphImpf) be called,H7121(QalImpf) The ladyH1404 of kingdoms.H4467 [6] I was wrothH7107(QalPerf) with my people,H5971 I have pollutedH2490(PielPerf) mine inheritance,H5159 and givenH5414(QalImpf) them into thine hand:H3027 thou didst shewH7760(QalPerf) them no mercy;H7356 upon the ancientH2205 hast thou veryH3966 heavilyH3513(HiphPerf) laid thy yoke.H5923 [7] And thou saidst,H559(QalImpf) I shall be a ladyH1404 for ever:H5769 [so] that thou didst not layH7760(QalPerf) these [things] to thy heart,H3820 neither didst rememberH2142(QalPerf) the latter endH319 of it. [8] Therefore hearH8085(QalImpv) now this, [thou that art] given to pleasures,H5719 that dwellestH3427(QalActPtc) carelessly,H983 that sayestH559(QalActPtc) in thine heart,H3824 I [am], and none elseH657 beside me; I shall not sitH3427(QalImpf) [as] a widow,H490 neither shall I knowH3045(QalImpf) the loss of children:H7908 [9] But these twoH8147 [things] shall comeH935(QalImpf) to thee in a momentH7281 in oneH259 day,H3117 the loss of children,H7908 and widowhood:H489 they shall comeH935(QalPerf) upon thee in their perfectionH8537 for the multitudeH7230 of thy sorceries,H3785 [and] for the greatH3966 abundanceH6109 of thine enchantments.H2267 [10] For thou hast trustedH982(QalImpf) in thy wickedness:H7451 thou hast said,H559(QalPerf) None seethH7200(QalActPtc) me. Thy wisdomH2451 and thy knowledge,H1847 it hath pervertedH7725(PolePerf) thee; and thou hast saidH559(QalImpf) in thine heart,H3820 I [am], and none elseH657 beside me. [11] Therefore shall evilH7451 comeH935(QalPerf) upon thee; thou shalt not knowH3045(QalImpf) from whence it riseth:H7837 and mischiefH1943 shall fallH5307(QalImpf) upon thee; thou shalt not be ableH3201(QalImpf) to put it off:H3722(PielInf) and desolationH7722 shall comeH935(QalImpf) upon thee suddenly,H6597 [which] thou shalt not know.H3045(QalImpf) [12] StandH5975(QalImpv) now with thine enchantments,H2267 and with the multitudeH7230 of thy sorceries,H3785 whereinH834 thou hast labouredH3021(QalPerf) from thy youth;H5271 if so be thou shalt be ableH3201(QalImpf) to profit,H3276(HiphInf) if so be thou mayest prevail.H6206(QalImpf) [13] Thou art weariedH3811(NiphPerf) in the multitudeH7230 of thy counsels.H6098 Let now the astrologers,H1895(QalActPtc) the stargazers,H2374 the monthlyH2320 prognosticators,H3045(HiphPtc) stand up,H5975(QalImpf) and saveH3467(HiphImpf) thee from [these things] that shall comeH935(QalImpf) upon thee. [14] Behold, they shall be as stubble;H7179 the fireH784 shall burnH8313(QalPerf) them; they shall not deliverH5337(HiphImpf) themselvesH5315 from the powerH3027 of the flame:H3852 [there shall] not [be] a coalH1513 to warmH2552(QalInf) at, [nor] fireH217 to sitH3427(QalInf) before it. [15] Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured,H3021(QalPerf) [even] thy merchants,H5503(QalActPtc) from thy youth:H5271 they shall wanderH8582(QalPerf) every oneH376 to his quarter;H5676 none shall saveH3467(HiphPtc) thee.
