[1] Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers who write oppressive decrees [2] to deprive the needy of justice, and to rob the poor among my people of their rights, that widows may be their plunder, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! [3] What will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth? [4] They will only bow down under the prisoners,
and will fall under the slain.
For all this his anger is not turned away,
but his hand is stretched out still.
[5] Alas Assyrian, the rod of my anger, the staff in whose hand is my indignation! [6] I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people who anger me I will give him a command to take the plunder and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. [7] However, he doesn’t mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off not a few nations. [8] For he says, “Aren’t all of my princes kings? [9] Isn’t Calno like Carchemish? Isn’t Hamath like Arpad? Isn’t Samaria like Damascus?” [10] As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose engraved images exceeded those of Jerusalem and of Samaria, [11] shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols? [12] Therefore it will happen that when the Lord has performed his whole work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the willful proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the insolence of his arrogant looks. [13] For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. [14] My hand has found the riches of the peoples like a nest, and like one gathers eggs that are abandoned, I have gathered all the earth. There was no one who moved their wing, or that opened their mouth, or chirped.” [15] Should an ax brag against him who chops with it? Should a saw exalt itself above him who saws with it? As if a rod should lift those who lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up someone who is not wood. [16] Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire. [17] The light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day. [18] He will consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, both soul and body. It will be as when a standard bearer faints. [19] The remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child could write their number. [20] It will come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those who have escaped from the house of Jacob will no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. [21] A remnant will return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. [22] For though your people, Israel, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness. [23] For the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will make a full end, and that determined, throughout all the earth. [24] Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, says, “My people who dwell in Zion, don’t be afraid of the Assyrian, though he strike you with the rod, and lift up his staff against you, as Egypt did. [25] For yet a very little while, and the indignation against you will be accomplished, and my anger will be directed to his destruction.” [26] Yahweh of Armies will stir up a scourge against him, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb. His rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up like he did against Egypt. [27] It will happen in that day that his burden will depart from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing oil. [28] He has come to Aiath. He has passed through Migron. At Michmash he stores his baggage. [29] They have gone over the pass. They have taken up their lodging at Geba. Ramah trembles. Gibeah of Saul has fled. [30] Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of Gallim! Listen, Laishah! You poor Anathoth! [31] Madmenah is a fugitive. The inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. [32] This very day he will halt at Nob. He shakes his hand at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. [33] Behold, the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will lop the boughs with terror. The tall will be cut down, and the lofty will be brought low. [34] He will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

[1] WoeH1945 unto them that decreeH2710(QalActPtc) unrighteousH205 decrees,H2711 and that writeH3789(PielPtc) grievousnessH5999 [which] they have prescribed;H3789(PielPerf) [2] To turn asideH5186(HiphInf) the needyH1800 from judgment,H1779 and to take awayH1497(QalInf) the rightH4941 from the poorH6041 of my people,H5971 that widowsH490 may be their prey,H7998 and [that] they may robH962(QalImpf) the fatherless!H3490 [3] And what will ye doH6213(QalImpf) in the dayH3117 of visitation,H6486 and in the desolationH7722 [which] shall comeH935(QalImpf) from far?H4801 to whom will ye fleeH5127(QalImpf) for help?H5833 and where will ye leaveH5800(QalImpf) your glory?H3519 [4] Without me they shallH1115 bow downH3766(QalPerf) under the prisoners,H616 and they shall fallH5307(QalImpf) under the slain.H2026(QalPasPtc) For all this his angerH639 is not turned away,H7725(QalPerf) but his handH3027 [is] stretched out still.H5186(QalPasPtc) [5] OH1945 Assyrian,H804 the rodH7626 of mine anger,H639 and the staffH4294 in their handH3027 is mine indignation.H2195 [6] I will sendH7971(PielImpf) him against an hypocriticalH2611 nation,H1471 and against the peopleH5971 of my wrathH5678 will I give him a charge,H6680(PielImpf) to takeH7997(QalInf) the spoil,H7998 and to takeH962(QalInf) the prey,H957 and to tread them downH7760(QalInf) like the mireH2563 of the streets.H2351 [7] Howbeit he meanethH1819(PielImpf) not so, neither doth his heartH3824 thinkH2803(QalImpf) so; but [it is] in his heartH3824 to destroyH8045(HiphInf) and cut offH3772(HiphInf) nationsH1471 not a few.H4592 [8] For he saith,H559(QalImpf) [Are] not my princesH8269 altogetherH3162 kings?H4428 [9] [Is] not CalnoH3641 as Carchemish?H3751 [is] not HamathH2574 as Arpad?H774 [is] not SamariaH8111 as Damascus?H1834 [10] As my handH3027 hath foundH4672(QalPerf) the kingdomsH4467 of the idols,H457 and whose graven imagesH6456 did excel them of JerusalemH3389 and of Samaria;H8111 [11] Shall I not, as I have doneH6213(QalPerf) unto SamariaH8111 and her idols,H457 so doH6213(QalImpf) to JerusalemH3389 and her idols?H6091 [12] Wherefore it shall come to pass, [that] when the LordH136 hath performedH1214(PielImpf) his whole workH4639 upon mountH2022 ZionH6726 and on Jerusalem,H3389 I will punishH6485(QalImpf) the fruitH6529 of the stoutH1433 heartH3824 of the kingH4428 of Assyria,H804 and the gloryH8597 of his highH7312 looks.H5869 [13] For he saith,H559(QalPerf) By the strengthH3581 of my handH3027 I have doneH6213(QalPerf) [it], and by my wisdom;H2451 for I am prudent:H995(NiphPerf) and I have removedH5493(HiphImpf) the boundsH1367 of the people,H5971 and have robbedH8154(PoelPerf) their treasures,H6259(Qere) and I have put downH3381(HiphImpf) the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) like a valiantH47 [man]: [14] And my handH3027 hath foundH4672(QalImpf) as a nestH7064 the richesH2428 of the people:H5971 and as one gatherethH622(QalInf) eggsH1000 [that are] left,H5800(QalPasPtc) have I gatheredH622(QalPerf) all the earth;H776 and there was none that movedH5074(QalActPtc) the wing,H3671 or openedH6475(QalActPtc) the mouth,H6310 or peeped.H6850(PilpPtc) [15] Shall the axeH1631 boastH6286(HithImpf) itself against him that hewethH2672(QalActPtc) therewith? [or] shall the sawH4883 magnifyH1431(HithImpf) itself against him that shakethH5130(HiphPtc) it? as if the rodH7626 should shakeH5130(HiphInf) [itself] against them that lift it up,H7311(HiphPtc) [or] as if the staffH4294 should lift upH7311(HiphInf) [itself, as if it were] no wood.H6086 [16] Therefore shall the Lord,H113 the LordH136(Ketiv) of hosts,H6635 sendH7971(PielImpf) among his fat onesH4924 leanness;H7332 and under his gloryH3519 he shall kindleH3344(QalImpf) a burningH3350 like the burning of a fire.H784 [17] And the lightH216 of IsraelH3478 shall be for a fire,H784 and his Holy OneH6918 for a flame:H3852 and it shall burnH1197(QalPerf) and devourH398(QalPerf) his thornsH7898 and his briersH8068 in oneH259 day;H3117 [18] And shall consumeH3615(PielImpf) the gloryH3519 of his forest,H3293 and of his fruitful field,H3759 both soulH5315 and body:H1320 and they shall be as when a standardbearerH5263(QalActPtc) fainteth.H4549(QalInf) [19] And the restH7605 of the treesH6086 of his forestH3293 shall be few,H4557 that a childH5288 may writeH3789(QalImpf) them. [20] And it shall come to pass in that day,H3117 [that] the remnantH7605 of Israel,H3478 and such as are escapedH6413 of the houseH1004 of Jacob,H3290 shall no more againH3254(HiphImpf) stayH8172(NiphInf) upon him that smoteH5221(HiphPtc) them; but shall stayH8172(NiphPerf) upon the Lord,H3068 the Holy OneH6918 of Israel,H3478 in truth.H571 [21] The remnantH7605 shall return,H7725(QalImpf) [even] the remnantH7605 of Jacob,H3290 unto the mightyH1368 God.H410 [22] For though thy peopleH5971 IsraelH3478 be as the sandH2344 of the sea,H3220 [yet] a remnantH7605 of them shall return:H7725(QalImpf) the consumptionH3631 decreedH2782(QalPasPtc) shall overflowH7857(QalActPtc) with righteousness.H6666 [23] For the LordH136 GodH3069 of hostsH6635 shall makeH6213(QalActPtc) a consumption,H3617 even determined,H2782(NiphPtc) in the midstH7130 of all the land.H776 [24] Therefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH136 GodH3069 of hosts,H6635 O my peopleH5971 that dwellestH3427(QalActPtc) in Zion,H6726 be not afraidH3372(QalImpf) of the Assyrian:H804 he shall smiteH5221(HiphImpf) thee with a rod,H7626 and shall lift upH5375(QalImpf) his staffH4294 against thee, after the mannerH1870 of Egypt.H4714 [25] For yet a veryH4213 little while,H4592 and the indignationH2195 shall cease,H3615(QalPerf) and mine angerH639 in their destruction.H8399 [26] And the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 shall stir upH5782(PolePerf) a scourgeH7752 for him according to the slaughterH4347 of MidianH4080 at the rockH6697 of Oreb:H6159 and [as] his rodH4294 [was] upon the sea,H3220 so shall he lift it upH5375(QalPerf) after the mannerH1870 of Egypt.H4714 [27] And it shall come to pass in that day,H3117 [that] his burdenH5448 shall be taken awayH5493(QalImpf) from off thy shoulder,H7926 and his yokeH5923 from off thy neck,H6677 and the yokeH5923 shall be destroyedH2254(PualPerf) becauseH6440 of the anointing.H8081 [28] He is comeH935(QalPerf) to Aiath,H5857 he is passedH5674(QalPerf) to Migron;H4051 at MichmashH4363 he hath laid upH6485(HiphImpf) his carriages:H3627 [29] They are gone overH5674(QalPerf) the passage:H4569 they have taken up their lodgingH4411 at Geba;H1387 RamahH7414 is afraid;H2729(QalPerf) GibeahH1390 of SaulH7586 is fled.H5127(QalPerf) [30] Lift upH6670(PielImpv) thy voice,H6963 O daughterH1323 ofH1530 Gallim:H1554 cause it to be heardH7181(HiphImpv) unto Laish,H3919 O poorH6041 Anathoth.H6068 [31] MadmenahH4088 is removed;H5074(QalPerf) the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of GebimH1374 gather themselves to flee.H5756(HiphPerf) [32] As yet shall he remainH5975(QalInf) at NobH5011 that day:H3117 he shall shakeH5130(PoleImpf) his handH3027 [against] the mountH2022 of the daughterH1323(Qere) of Zion,H6726 the hillH1389 of Jerusalem.H3389 [33] Behold, the Lord,H113 the LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 shall lopH5586(PielPtc) the boughH6288 with terror:H4637 and the high onesH7311(QalActPtc) of statureH6967 [shall be] hewn down,H1438(QalPasPtc) and the haughtyH1364 shall be humbled.H8213(QalImpf) [34] And he shall cut downH5362(PielPerf) the thicketsH5442 of the forestH3293 with iron,H1270 and LebanonH3844 shall fallH5307(QalImpf) by a mighty one.H117
