[1] Let me sing for my well beloved a song of my beloved about his vineyard.
My beloved had a vineyard on a very fruitful hill.
[2] He dug it up,
gathered out its stones,
planted it with the choicest vine,
built a tower in the middle of it,
and also cut out a wine press in it.
He looked for it to yield grapes,
but it yielded wild grapes.
[3] “Now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah,
please judge between me and my vineyard.
[4] What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it?
Why, when I looked for it to yield grapes, did it yield wild grapes?
[5] Now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard.
I will take away its hedge, and it will be eaten up.
I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled down.
[6] I will lay it a wasteland.
It won’t be pruned or hoed,
but it will grow briers and thorns.
I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it.”
[7] For the vineyard of Yahweh of Armies is the house of Israel,
and the men of Judah his pleasant plant.
He looked for justice, but behold, oppression,
for righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress.
[8] Woe to those who join house to house,
who lay field to field, until there is no room,
and you are made to dwell alone in the middle of the land!
[9] In my ears, Yahweh of Armies says: “Surely many houses will be desolate,
even great and beautiful, unoccupied.
[10] For ten acres§ of vineyard shall yield one bath,
and a homer of seed shall yield an ephah.”
[11] Woe to those who rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink,
who stay late into the night, until wine inflames them!
[12] The harp, lyre, tambourine, and flute, with wine, are at their feasts;
but they don’t respect the work of Yahweh,
neither have they considered the operation of his hands.
[13] Therefore my people go into captivity for lack of knowledge.
Their honorable men are famished,
and their multitudes are parched with thirst.
[14] Therefore Sheol has enlarged its desire,
and opened its mouth without measure;
and their glory, their multitude, their pomp, and he who rejoices among them, descend into it.
[15] So man is brought low,
mankind is humbled,
and the eyes of the arrogant ones are humbled;
[16] but Yahweh of Armies is exalted in justice,
and God the Holy One is sanctified in righteousness.
[17] Then the lambs will graze as in their pasture,
and strangers will eat the ruins of the rich.
[18] Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood,
and wickedness as with cart rope,
[19] who say, “Let him make haste, let him hasten his work, that we may see it;
let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come,
that we may know it!”
[20] Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
who put darkness for light,
and light for darkness;
who put bitter for sweet,
and sweet for bitter!
[21] Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
and prudent in their own sight!
[22] Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine,
and champions at mixing strong drink;
[23] who acquit the guilty for a bribe,
but deny justice for the innocent!
[24] Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so their root shall be as rottenness,
and their blossom shall go up as dust,
because they have rejected the law of Yahweh of Armies,
and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
[25] Therefore Yahweh’s anger burns against his people,
and he has stretched out his hand against them and has struck them.
The mountains tremble,
and their dead bodies are as refuse in the middle of the streets.
For all this, his anger is not turned away,
but his hand is still stretched out.
[26] He will lift up a banner to the nations from far away,
and he will whistle for them from the end of the earth.
Behold, they will come speedily and swiftly.
[27] No one shall be weary nor stumble among them;
no one shall slumber nor sleep,
neither shall the belt of their waist be untied,
nor the strap of their sandals be broken,
[28] whose arrows are sharp,
and all their bows bent.
Their horses’ hoofs will be like flint,
and their wheels like a whirlwind.
[29] Their roaring will be like a lioness.
They will roar like young lions.
Yes, they shall roar,
and seize their prey and carry it off,
and there will be no one to deliver.
[30] They will roar against them in that day like the roaring of the sea.
If one looks to the land, behold, darkness and distress.
The light is darkened in its clouds.

[7] For the vineyardH3754 of the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 [is] the houseH1004 of Israel,H3478 and the menH376 of JudahH3063 his pleasantH8191 plant:H5194 and he lookedH6960(PielImpf) for judgment,H4941 but behold oppression;H4939 for righteousness,H6666 but behold a cry.H6818 [8] WoeH1945 unto them that joinH5060(HiphPtc) houseH1004 to house,H1004 [that] layH7126(HiphImpf) fieldH7704 to field,H7704 till [there be] noH657 place,H4725 that they may be placedH3427(HophPerf) alone in the midstH7130 of the earth!H776 [9] In mine earsH241 [said] the LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 Of a truthH3808 manyH7227 housesH1004 shall be desolate,H8047 [even] greatH1419 and fair,H2896 without inhabitant.H3427(QalActPtc) [10] Yea,H3588 tenH6235 acresH6776 of vineyardH3754 shall yieldH6213(QalImpf) oneH259 bath,H1324 and the seedH2233 of an homerH2563 shall yieldH6213(QalImpf) an ephah.H374 [11] WoeH1945 unto them that rise up earlyH7925(HiphPtc) in the morning,H1242 [that] they may followH7291(QalImpf) strong drink;H7941 that continueH309(PielPtc) until night,H5399 [till] wineH3196 inflameH1814(HiphImpf) them! [12] And the harp,H3658 and the viol,H5035 the tabret,H8596 and pipe,H2485 and wine,H3196 are in their feasts:H4960 but they regardH5027(HiphImpf) not the workH6467 of the Lord,H3068 neither considerH7200(QalPerf) the operationH4639 of his hands.H3027 [13] Therefore my peopleH5971 are gone into captivity,H1540(QalPerf) because [they have] no knowledge:H1847 and their honourableH3519 menH4962 [are] famished,H7458 and their multitudeH1995 dried upH6704 with thirst.H6772 [14] Therefore hellH7585 hath enlargedH7337(HiphPerf) herself,H5315 and openedH6473(QalPerf) her mouthH6310 without measure:H2706 and their glory,H1926 and their multitude,H1995 and their pomp,H7588 and he that rejoiceth,H5938 shall descendH3381(QalPerf) into it. [15] And the mean manH120 shall be brought down,H7817(NiphImpf) and the mighty manH376 shall be humbled,H8213(QalImpf) and the eyesH5869 of the loftyH1364 shall be humbled:H8213(QalImpf) [16] But the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 shall be exaltedH1361(QalImpf) in judgment,H4941 and GodH410 that is holyH6918 shall be sanctifiedH6942(NiphPerf) in righteousness.H6666 [17] Then shall the lambsH3532 feedH7462(QalPerf) after their manner,H1699 and the waste placesH2723 of the fat onesH4220 shall strangersH1481(QalActPtc) eat.H398(QalImpf) [18] WoeH1945 unto them that drawH4900(QalActPtc) iniquityH5771 with cordsH2256 of vanity,H7723 and sinH2403 as it were with a cartH5699 rope:H5688 [19] That say,H559(QalActPtc) Let him make speed,H4116(PielImpf) [and] hastenH2363(HiphImpf) his work,H4639 that we may seeH7200(QalImpf) [it]: and let the counselH6098 of the Holy OneH6918 of IsraelH3478 draw nighH7126(QalImpf) and come,H935(QalImpf) that we may knowH3045(QalImpf) [it]! [20] WoeH1945 unto them that callH559(QalActPtc) evilH7451 good,H2896 and goodH2896 evil;H7451 that putH7760(QalActPtc) darknessH2822 for light,H216 and lightH216 for darkness;H2822 that putH7760(QalActPtc) bitterH4751 for sweet,H4966 and sweetH4966 for bitter!H4751 [21] WoeH1945 unto [them that are] wiseH2450 in their own eyes,H5869 and prudentH995(NiphPtc) in their own sight!H6440 [22] WoeH1945 unto [them that are] mightyH1368 to drinkH8354(QalInf) wine,H3196 and menH582 of strengthH2428 to mingleH4537(QalInf) strong drink:H7941 [23] Which justifyH6663(HiphPtc) the wickedH7563 forH6118 reward,H7810 and take awayH5493(HiphImpf) the righteousnessH6666 of the righteousH6662 from him! [24] Therefore as the fireH784 devourethH398(QalInf) the stubble,H7179 and the flameH3956 consumethH7503(QalImpf) the chaff,H2842 [so] their rootH8328 shall be as rottenness,H4716 and their blossomH6525 shall go upH5927(QalImpf) as dust:H80 because they have cast awayH3988(QalPerf) the lawH8451 of the LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 and despisedH5006(PielPerf) the wordH565 of the Holy OneH6918 of Israel.H3478 [25] Therefore is the angerH639 of the LordH3068 kindledH2734(QalPerf) against his people,H5971 and he hath stretched forthH5186(QalImpf) his handH3027 against them, and hath smittenH5221(HiphImpf) them: and the hillsH2022 did tremble,H7264(QalImpf) and their carcasesH5038 [were] tornH5478 in the midstH7130 of the streets.H2351 For all this his angerH639 is not turned away,H7725(QalPerf) but his handH3027 [is] stretched outH5186(QalPasPtc) still. [26] And he will lift upH5375(QalPerf) an ensignH5251 to the nationsH1471 from far,H7350 and will hissH8319(QalPerf) unto them from the endH7097 of the earth:H776 and, behold, they shall comeH935(QalImpf) with speedH4120 swiftly:H7031 [27] None shall be wearyH5889 nor stumbleH3782(QalActPtc) among them; none shall slumberH5123(QalImpf) nor sleep;H3462(QalImpf) neither shall the girdleH232 of their loinsH2504 be loosed,H6605(NiphPerf) nor the latchetH8288 of their shoesH5275 be broken:H5423(NiphPerf) [28] Whose arrowsH2671 [are] sharp,H8150(QalActPtc) and all their bowsH7198 bent,H1869(QalPasPtc) their horses’H5483 hoofsH6541 shall be countedH2803(NiphPerf) like flint,H6862 and their wheelsH1534 like a whirlwind:H5492 [29] Their roaringH7581 [shall be] like a lion,H3833 they shall roarH7580(QalImpf/Qere) like young lions:H3715 yea, they shall roar,H5098(QalImpf) and lay holdH270(QalImpf) of the prey,H2964 and shall carry [it] away safe,H6403(HiphImpf) and none shall deliverH5337(HiphPtc) [it]. [30] And in that dayH3117 they shall roarH5098(QalImpf) against them like the roaringH5100 of the sea:H3220 and if [one] lookH5027(PielPerf) unto the land,H776 behold darknessH2822 [and] sorrow,H6862 and the lightH216 is darkenedH2821(QalPerf) in the heavensH6183 thereof.
