World English Bible Classic
[1] “Behold, my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights:
I have put my Spirit on him.
He will bring justice to the nations.
[2] He will not shout,
nor raise his voice,
nor cause it to be heard in the street.
[3] He won’t break a bruised reed.
He won’t quench a dimly burning wick.
He will faithfully bring justice.
[4] He will not fail nor be discouraged,
until he has set justice in the earth,
and the islands wait for his law.”
[5] God Yahweh,
he who created the heavens and stretched them out,
he who spread out the earth and that which comes out of it,
he who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk in it, says:
[6] “I, Yahweh, have called you in righteousness.
I will hold your hand.
I will keep you,
and make you a covenant for the people,
as a light for the nations,
[7] to open the blind eyes,
to bring the prisoners out of the dungeon,
and those who sit in darkness out of the prison.
[8] “I am Yahweh.
That is my name.
I will not give my glory to another,
nor my praise to engraved images.
[9] Behold, the former things have happened
and I declare new things.
I tell you about them before they come up.”
[10] Sing to Yahweh a new song,
and his praise from the end of the earth,
you who go down to the sea,
and all that is therein,
the islands and their inhabitants.
[11] Let the wilderness and its cities raise their voices,
with the villages that Kedar inhabits.
Let the inhabitants of Sela sing.
Let them shout from the top of the mountains!
[12] Let them give glory to Yahweh,
and declare his praise in the islands.
[13] Yahweh will go out like a mighty man.
He will stir up zeal like a man of war.
He will raise a war cry.
Yes, he will shout aloud.
He will triumph over his enemies.
[14] “I have been silent a long time.
I have been quiet and restrained myself.
Now I will cry out like a travailing woman. I will both gasp and pant.
[15] I will destroy mountains and hills,
and dry up all their herbs.
I will make the rivers islands,
and will dry up the pools.
[16] I will bring the blind by a way that they don’t know.
I will lead them in paths that they don’t know.
I will make darkness light before them,
and crooked places straight.
I will do these things,
and I will not forsake them.
[17] “Those who trust in engraved images,
who tell molten images,
‘You are our gods,’
will be turned back.
They will be utterly disappointed.
[18] “Hear, you deaf,
and look, you blind,
that you may see.
[19] Who is blind, but my servant?
Or who is as deaf as my messenger whom I send?
Who is as blind as he who is at peace,
and as blind as Yahweh’s servant?
[20] You see many things, but don’t observe.
His ears are open, but he doesn’t listen.
[21] It pleased Yahweh, for his righteousness’ sake, to magnify the law
and make it honorable.
[22] But this is a robbed and plundered people.
All of them are snared in holes,
and they are hidden in prisons.
They have become captives, and no one delivers,
and a plunder, and no one says, ‘Restore them!’
[23] Who is there among you who will give ear to this?
Who will listen and hear for the time to come?
[24] Who gave Jacob as plunder,
and Israel to the robbers?
Didn’t Yahweh, he against whom we have sinned?
For they would not walk in his ways,
and they disobeyed his law.
[25] Therefore he poured the fierceness of his anger on him,
and the strength of battle.
It set him on fire all around, but he didn’t know.
It burned him, but he didn’t take it to heart.”
King James Version
[1] Behold my servant,H5650 whom I uphold;H8551(QalImpf) mine elect,H972 [in whom] my soulH5315 delighteth;H7521(QalPerf) I have putH5414(QalPerf) my spiritH7307 upon him: he shall bring forthH3318(HiphImpf) judgmentH4941 to the Gentiles.H1471 [2] He shall not cry,H6817(QalImpf) nor lift up,H5375(QalImpf) nor cause his voiceH6963 to be heardH8085(HiphImpf) in the street.H2351 [3] A bruisedH7533(QalPasPtc) reedH7070 shall he not break,H7665(QalImpf) and the smokingH3544 flaxH6594 shall he not quench:H3518(PielImpf) he shall bring forthH3318(HiphImpf) judgmentH4941 unto truth.H571 [4] He shall not failH3543(QalImpf) nor be discouraged,H7533(QalImpf) till he have setH7760(QalImpf) judgmentH4941 in the earth:H776 and the islesH339 shall waitH3176(PielImpf) for his law.H8451 [5] Thus saithH559(QalPerf) GodH410 the Lord,H3068 he that createdH1254(QalActPtc) the heavens,H8064 and stretched them out;H5186(QalActPtc) he that spread forthH7554(QalActPtc) the earth,H776 and that which cometh outH6631 of it; he that givethH5414(QalActPtc) breathH5397 unto the peopleH5971 upon it, and spiritH7307 to them that walkH1980(QalActPtc) therein: [6] I the LordH3068 have calledH7121(QalPerf) thee in righteousness,H6664 and will holdH2388(HiphImpf) thine hand,H3027 and will keepH5341(QalImpf) thee, and giveH5414(QalImpf) thee for a covenantH1285 of the people,H5971 for a lightH216 of the Gentiles;H1471 [7] To openH6491(QalInf) the blindH5787 eyes,H5869 to bring outH3318(HiphInf) the prisonersH616 from the prison,H4525 [and] them that sitH3427(QalActPtc) in darknessH2822 out of the prisonH3608 house.H1004 [8] I [am] the Lord:H3068 that [is] my name:H8034 and my gloryH3519 will I not giveH5414(QalImpf) to another,H312 neither my praiseH8416 to graven images.H6456 [9] Behold, the former thingsH7223 are come to pass,H935(QalPerf) and new thingsH2319 do I declare:H5046(HiphPtc) before they spring forthH6779(QalImpf) I tellH8085(HiphImpf) you of them. [10] SingH7891(QalImpv) unto the LordH3068 a newH2319 song,H7892 [and] his praiseH8416 from the endH7097 of the earth,H776 ye that go downH3381(QalActPtc) to the sea,H3220 and all that is therein;H4393 the isles,H339 and the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) thereof. [11] Let the wildernessH4057 and the citiesH5892 thereof lift upH5375(QalImpf) [their voice], the villagesH2691 [that] KedarH6938 doth inhabit:H3427(QalImpf) let the inhabitantsH3427(QalActPtc) of the rockH5553 sing,H7442(QalImpf) let them shoutH6681(QalImpf) from the topH7218 of the mountains.H2022 [12] Let them giveH7760(QalImpf) gloryH3519 unto the Lord,H3068 and declareH5046(HiphImpf) his praiseH8416 in the islands.H339 [13] The LordH3068 shall go forthH3318(QalImpf) as a mighty man,H1368 he shall stir upH5782(HiphImpf) jealousyH7068 like a manH376 of war:H4421 he shall cry,H7321(HiphImpf) yea, roar;H6873(HiphImpf) he shall prevailH1396(HithImpf) against his enemies.H341(QalActPtc) [14] I have long timeH5769 holden my peace;H2814(HiphPerf) I have been still,H2790(HiphImpf) [and] refrainedH662(HithImpf) myself: [now] will I cryH6463(QalImpf) like a travailing woman;H3205(QalActPtc) I will destroyH5395(QalImpf/Ketiv) and devourH7602(QalImpf) at once.H3162 [15] I will make wasteH2717(HiphImpf) mountainsH2022 and hills,H1389 and dry upH3001(HiphImpf) all their herbs;H6212 and I will makeH7760(QalPerf) the riversH5104 islands,H339 and I will dry upH3001(HiphImpf) the pools.H98 [16] And I will bringH3212(HiphPerf) the blindH5787 by a wayH1870 [that] they knewH3045(QalPerf) not; I will leadH1869(HiphImpf) them in pathsH5410 [that] they have not known:H3045(QalPerf) I will makeH7760(QalImpf) darknessH4285 lightH216 beforeH6440 them, and crooked thingsH4625 straight.H4334 These thingsH1697 will I doH6213(QalPerf) unto them, and not forsakeH5800(QalPerf) them. [17] They shall be turnedH5472(NiphPerf) back,H268 they shall be greatlyH1322 ashamed,H954(QalImpf) that trustH982(QalActPtc) in graven images,H6459 that sayH559(QalActPtc) to the molten images,H4541 Ye [are] our gods.H430 [18] Hear,H8085(QalImpv) ye deaf;H2795 and look,H5027(HiphImpv) ye blind,H5787 that ye may see.H7200(QalInf) [19] Who [is] blind,H5787 but my servant?H5650 or deaf,H2795 as my messengerH4397 [that] I sent?H7971(QalImpf) who [is] blindH5787 as [he that is] perfect,H7999(PualPtc) and blindH5787 as the Lord’sH3068 servant?H5650 [20] SeeingH7200(QalInf/Qere) many things,H7227 but thou observestH8104(QalImpf) not; openingH6491(QalInf) the ears,H241 but he hearethH8085(QalImpf) not. [21] The LordH3068 is well pleasedH2654(QalPerf) for his righteousness’H6664 sake; he will magnifyH1431(HiphImpf) the law,H8451 and make [it] honourable.H142(HiphImpf) [22] But this [is] a peopleH5971 robbedH962(QalPasPtc) and spoiled;H8154(QalPasPtc) [they are] all of them snaredH6351(HiphInf) in holes,H2352(Ketiv) and they are hidH2244(HophPerf) in prisonH3608 houses:H1004 they are for a prey,H957 and none delivereth;H5337(HiphPtc) for a spoil,H4933 and none saith,H559(QalActPtc) Restore.H7725(HiphImpv) [23] Who among you will give earH238(HiphImpf) to this? [who] will hearkenH7181(HiphImpf) and hearH8085(QalImpf) for the time to come?H268 [24] Who gaveH5414(QalPerf) JacobH3290 for a spoil,H4933(Qere) and IsraelH3478 to the robbers?H962(QalActPtc) did not the Lord,H3068 he against whomH2098 we have sinned?H2398(QalPerf) for they wouldH14(QalPerf) not walkH1980(QalInf) in his ways,H1870 neither were they obedientH8085(QalPerf) unto his law.H8451 [25] Therefore he hath pouredH8210(QalImpf) upon him the furyH2534 of his anger,H639 and the strengthH5807 of battle:H4421 and it hath set him on fireH3857(PielImpf) round about,H5439 yet he knewH3045(QalPerf) not; and it burnedH1197(QalImpf) him, yet he laidH7760(QalImpf) [it] not to heart.H3820
